I go way,way back to when this was Trawinski's. It's always convenient to have a full service…read morehardware store nearby. I was thrilled, years ago, when they expanded into a bigger, new location opposite the fairgrounds. Product selection expanded, the store was large, well organized, and brightly lit; parking was easier, and hours of operation extended. Plus they had dogs in the store, which is always a bonus! They also had a full-service paint department so I decided to buy my paint supplies there. Shop local, you know? Unfortunately, their pricing was about 25% higher than I was paying elsewhere. When I mentioned this the owner, Frank, became irritated. I showed him my invoices. He then became angry, not understanding how I was purchasing less for retail than he was paying the franchise, or something along those lines. It was weird. So, I stopped purchasing paints there but did continue buy other supplies. Later, they moved to their present location which continues to have ample parking and easy access, as well as a decent selection of hardware and sundries, to my recall. As a bonus, they carry not only chainsaws, but chainsaw parts and supplies. At the time, the fellow who ran that department, Andy, was great- helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. One day, I needed a couple saw parts which he had in stock; it was his suggestion that I take all that he had, 4 or 5 pieces, and return those I did not need as it would allow his system to automatically re-order. So I did that... Unfortunately, returning the parts was just an awful experience. The cashier at the time, a lady with white/grey hair, could not have been more rude or angry, acting as though I were taking food out of her mouth or committing some sort of fraud by returning the parts as I had been advised to do the previous day. I recall her interrupting a conversation I was having with another customer, an acquaintance of mine, as she began to berate me and demand not only the receipt, which I provided, but also my drivers license to process the return- a purchase of less than $25. I have no idea what makes people think it's acceptable to behave in the manner she did. It truly was a distasteful experience. As a result, I have not entered the store or spent one thin dime there since- though I do purchase thousands of dollars of hardware and supplies, etc. annually. Instead, I chose to patronize another local business which appreciates customers spending their money with them, though it is less convenient for me to do so. Reading through the various reviews here, evidently I am not alone in my experiences.

A Hardware Store on Steroids!…read more Our first visit to Hatchet Hardware of Troy was for some plumbing parts. When we first walked in, my thoughts were, 'they're not going to have plumbing parts...' I was totally wrong. This hardware store has it all - everything you expect in a local hardware store and then some. The entry to the store is filled with unique items for your home, trinkets, and gifts. It's a visual delight. Then you get into the heart of the store and there you'll find housewares and small appliances, landscape supplies, light bulbs...the list goes on. They even offer refills of cleaning supplies for environmentally conscious shoppers. Don't forget about upstairs which houses the plumbing supplies amongst other things. What's even better is the staff is friendly and helpful. If you haven't been yet, check it out!

Still in the 4" pots, these babies had sent out peppers all over the place! I am now home and kinda regretting not buying one... But I did buy 16 tomato plants... all for 1$ a piece and I just finished planting then out in my garden. They are beautiful and I think I might just make a special trip back up to this place .... There were two employees in the store including one that I walked past while he was doing something at the front door. No "Hello" or "Can we help you find something." I wandered down the central aisle looking both ways at every side aisle until I found what I wanted. I took it to the counter and both guys were counting money. Again, no "hello" or "did you find what you were looking for." I don't think they actually said anything to me the whole time. Small hardware stores need excellent customer service to compete with big box stores and the internet. This one experience was disappointing.

And, the employees are typically very friendly, very helpful, and very patient. Well, there is an exception to every rule and I found it at Phillips Hardware. I'd just moved to Delmar and had previously only gone to Lowes frequently as it is more convenient to my house. But, I went to Phillips wanting (and hoping for) good customer service and the ability to ask questions. I didn't get it. I needed some chain cut and some eye hooks for a ceiling rack I was hanging in my kitchen. The woman at the front counter was quite pleasant and called someone to help me -- perhaps the owner. A sullen uncommunicative man appeared and directed me to follow him. He seemed severely irritated to have to serve me and I was as polite as possible, treating him as if he was the customer. After cutting the chain, refusing to make eye contact he thrust the pieces at me. I asked where I might find eye hooks and, acting inconvenienced, he pointed to where they were; when I saw a small selection I asked if there might be others elsewhere and he snapped that that what was there was all that there were to be had. Clearly he doesn't like either serving customers or being asked questions. I immediately decided then I would refrain from further purchases at Phillips and after cashing out drove around Delmar to Glenmont to go to Lowes. There I actually did find very helpful sales personnel, and walked out with many purchases. What a severe disappointment Phillips proved to be; I actually prefer supporting independent businesses and will pay more for items in order to do so. I won't, however, put up with rudeness and bad customer service, which is why I will never return to Phillips. Btw, I found a wide array of eye hooks in Lowes, and they were among my purchases. I should have simply started there.

I called Mark on the recommendation of the regional rep for the company that makes my furnace. I…read morehad tried several other companies, - including my long-time maintenance company, who are regional distributors for my equipment - with poor results. Mark came quickly, knew the product line (although he was not specifically family with my equipment) and was experienced and knowledgeable enough to be able to quickly diagnose and fix my problems, based on what he knew about other equipment from the same manufacturer. He was quick - because of his diagnostic skills and his knowledge of how to repair - and affordable, and his repairs have held up over time. He is old-school, someone who cares about his customers and his job and takes the trouble to do it well. I called him because of a problem (that eventually self-repaired) and he called back the same day, even though he was on vacation in another state, to give me what help and support he could over the phone, and to arrange to come and fix things as soon as he got back. That's the kind of work that gives me confidence and peace of mind. I recommend him most highly.

Gary not only walked me downstairs and took all the time needed to find me one little $0.69 screw, but because it was a specialty screw I needed and this one was a little long, he actually grinded and polished it down to fit my RV door! And didn't charge any extra. I have never experienced this high level of customer service before, he was amazing. So I asked if he would help me with a wrench needed to adjust my Vespa mirror. I'm looking at it he said instead I needed a hex key and got me one that fit! This was the best hardware store I've ever been to, waaaayyyy better than any Home Depot. I only wish they existed in my home town in Irvine CA, I wouldn't go anywhere else. This hardware store is what hardware stores used to be like when I was little, with everything under the sun and friendly knowledgeable people, who are plentiful in this store.
