We had a particular vision for the re-landscaping of our front yard, but it posed some engineering challenges. We had a designer develop a conceptual plan, but it did not fully address the engineering issues. When we met John Arney at Helix Landscape Construction, we knew we'd found the right person and the right company for the job. Sloping below street level, our front yard posed an interesting challenge to keep rain runoff out of our sump system as much as possible. The design incorporated the concept of a rocky swale to collect runoff, but John engineered all the details to including french drains to direct runoff into the landscape to re-charge the local water table for the signature bonsai tree and other plants envisioned in the plan. Throughout the project, John took the time to understand our aesthetic for the yard, and provided advice on so many details as it took shape. He traveled with us to rock yards and specialty nurseries to help find the perfect elements. John brought both great design ideas and the technical know-how we needed to make our vision a reality. Over the course of the two weeks he spent with us, I felt he truly became our partner in the project, which made it a pleasure to work with him and his team. As for execution, John's team was efficient, conscientious and respectful of us and our neighbors. The project was completed on time, despite discovery of a massive root system left behind from a previous tree removal, and many other tweaks to the effort made along the way. I'm definitely the outlier here on yelp, but Helix did an extremely shameful installation for my residential project. Nothing was done correctly. 1. irrigation: John explained he was an irrigation specialist and he declined the irrigation plan saying he would take care of the irrigation and that the price was included. He spent the first two weeks working on the irrigation, and in the end, half the grass did not survive and many of the shrubs also dried up. I ended up having to hire another contractor to re-do my irrigation who installed a completely new system tailored to the design (with new pipes, drip for shrubs, and rotor heads for the grass) in two days for less than what john charged me for one new station (that I never even authorized). 2. Lawn: new ground cover did not come in and the old grass and shrubs are popping up all over the place, despite me paying for demo of the original lawn and landscaping. I was also there when he instructed his team to spray round-up on the yard AFTER seeding and planting, so those shrubs died and the lawn either didn't grow in or died. John tried to attribute the dead shrubs to the heavy rain. 4. Very poor shrub quality: he accepted poor/dying plant material, and also let it sit for two weeks before installing, and he actually installed dead plant material, then made me walk around and make a map or install flags where replacements were needed. 5. Shrub installation: shrubs weren't placed per the design, and he also made me go around and map out the mistakes. 6. Hardscape installation - he installed stepping stones 2 inches above grade and planting boxes very unlevel/lop sided. I did get other quotes, but took this one based on recommendations. We ultimately went with Helix because they were professional and knowledgeable right from the get-go. Their designer was reasonably priced and took our feedback/input about the overall aesthetic into consideration at every step. They also made the design portion quick and easy. Once we had the plans, John and his team got to work. They were very professional, arrived on time, worked diligently throughout the day and finished at a reasonable hour each day to not disturb the neighbors. John was frequently on-site along with the foreman who was there everyday. They were attentive in case I had any concerns, responded quickly to issues, and even asked questions where we weren't clear in our plans. Most importantly, when issues came up (as they always do with big projects), John was quick to jump in and resolve the problem. I never felt like we were out of the loop or unaware. John worked from a design - but since I wanted to add a Strawberry tree he took me to the nursery to pick it out. While there he showed me all the other plants in the design which gave me a chance to switch out some of them. Now there's even better diversity of color, texture and size. Throughout the process everyone answered my questions, made adjustments as plants were going in and had some fantastic suggestions. They educated me about the ongoing maintenance. They were quick (took about 6 days from start to finish), respectful of the property and just delightful to work with. In fact - my neighbor was so pleased, they started working on his front yard today. Their bid was VERY competitive even with a few add ons. During the summer of last year we decided to finally replace our front lawn with a drought tolerant landscape and take advantage of the water district's turf replacement rebate. My first random call was to Helix Landscape after which I knew John Arney was the right guy for the job. He was totally tapped into the rebate application process and willing to come over and take a look at our property right away. We wanted lots of color and pollinating plants surrounding a meadow-like walkable ground cover area. John produced a landscape plan and used it to get the rebate application underway while we reviewed and finalized the plan and contract estimate. He and crew performed the work during a week of extreme summer heat. When a few of the plants did not make it through the heat, John came back and spent a day installing replacements as part of his plant warranty guarantee. It's now the first spring after completion and our front landscape is beautiful and exactly what we were going for. They installed a deck, sod, irrigation for the lawn and drip irrigation for my plants, and a pretty gravel border. John also installed an wifi driven controller for my irrigation. I love it! I can now easily adjust my irrigation settings right from my phone. The system is also hooked up to a local weather station and if it rains it will skip the water cycle. read more

I love Helix Landscape. John Arney, the owner, worked with my wife and I to come up with a design we love. John was always receptive to tirelessly making changes and tweaks as the project evolved and we are ecstatic at the final results. His workers, usually Dallas and Chris were courteous, showed up on time and did an excellent and meticulous job even re-doing some of their work as they went along when they judged they could do something to improve on the design. My wife and I are loving enjoying the new look of the hardscape as well as the diversity of the plants John reccommended to compliment the hardscape. We are on a walkstreet and as I sit outside enjoying our reworked landscaping we have received many compliments by passerbys telling us how much they like what "we" have done. They did a terrific job changing out all of our sprinkler systems and landscaping with draught tolerant plants. As our systems are connected to our neighbors via a shared planter between driveways, they even helped our neighbors fix their system at very little expense. I recently remodeling the exterior of my home, which left my front yard needing attention. I wanted landscaping that was drought tolerant, but still looked pretty and complimented the colors of my house. John and his crew removed all of my plants and grass and brought in dirt to create levels and an island on my once flat yard. I was able to choose the colors and types of plants I wanted and John created a design that took everything into consideration. He is very knowledgeable about plants and has great design ideas. He also added boulders, decomposed granite pathways, an irrigation system and a lighting system to show off the yard in the evenings. The work was done in a very timely manner and the crew was polite, hard working and always cleaned up at the end of every day.
