We enjoyed a two hour leisurely breakfast while making new friends with the other guests. And sure could have downed our breakfast and been out of there in 15 minutes, but this is one of those hunting lodges that just makes you want to kick back and stay a while. The lodge was built by the current owner, who ran a custom home business, and the grand lodge design was really well thought out, the rooms were really spacious, and we loved how the rooms above wrapped around the big open style living room. This retreat is situated above the river in a truly picturesque high desert landscape.

The rooms were straight out of a romantic and cozy place and time, even though newly remodeled this treasure truly felt alive with history. Over breakfast I found myself daydreaming about getting married to my husband all over again and having the wedding in this classic overnight country hotel. The grounds were very well kept, complete with a beautiful pond, historic barn, and a deer grazing in the field out the window as we ate are breakfast at the huge ol' farm table. Or hostess was also super accommodating with a special gluten free, paleo breakfast for me. I look forward to staying here again, and sinking back into that chair on the wrap around porch as the sun gets ready to set, and the wildflowers sway in the mountain breeze.

Debra, the…read moreowner/innkeeper, has expanded her flock of goats and now is mastering the art of goat cheese and milk-making, selling her creative chevre combinations at local farmers' markets and offering advice to would-be artisan farmers (or wannabes) along with her signature ranch house breakfasts (think fresh eggs, hash browns, melon, sausage, and excellent dark rich coffee). She's also a fountain of knowledge and great conversationalist, and her elegant ranch home quickly feels familiar within the first few minutes of arrival (once you open the gate and bounce along the gravel driveway to the barnside parking). This time, I decided to get creative and took a sunrise hike before breakfast to the summit of nearby Council Mountain (8126 ft.) in the Payette National Forest. Admittedly, it was a bit of an adventure, with fallen Ponderosa pines (the good Samaritans have chainsaws in their trucks up here), black bear cubs, a great grey owl, kestrels, and a herd of free-ranging cattle, and I didn't get back until 11:30 am, so my breakfast was an early lunch. But the chance to see the mountains from an exquisitely rugged vantage point made the 12-mile morning trek worth the effort. The food and company that Debra provided after were most welcome. You don't actually need to do a hike like that to have a good stay at the Elkhorn (or bring along French wine to drink on the patio while watching the lightning and rains come in at night). You could just hang out for a while and soak in the hip ranchhouse atmosphere while goats, horses, sheep, mules, chickens, dogs, and other creatures wander about. It's definitely a pioneering sort of place - a 21st century version of a Western American classic, with WiFi and goat cheese included.

The kitchen is open to guests which I found amazing. When I arrived I was hungry but not for a full meal so I toasted a bagel and sat outside on the porch to eat it and listen to the birds. One caveat about the Rooster Room is the shower. You need to get the shower curtain arranged before you take a shower to avoid water on the floor. Otherwise, it was a great stay and the breakfast was wonderful, as well. It's definitely not your ordinary lodging.

Sunny summer days, cold winter nights - all is well at the Cambridge House Bed & Breakfast…read more This is our fourth time staying at the Cambridge House, and so I feel like I can finally write a thorough review. Let me first say, I'm not generally a fan of B&B's. My generalized experience has been that I feel like I'm intruding on all of the stuffed animals that have taken up residence in a bedroom. Being a man, I generally feel out of place and confused about where to sit, and what exactly I'm allowed to touch. In the case of the Cambridge House, I actually feel like I'm at home. The house is beautifully appointed and recently renovated, so it has all of the charm of the 1916 Craftsman that it is, without all of the pains of scalding water and creaking walls that I've come to expect from older homes. There are many cozy nooks in the house and finding a nice place to read a book is a true pleasure. Breakfast is prompt, tasty, and simple and the proprietor, Sheila, is a gem. It has some nice modern conveniences like free WiFi that make it easy for me to get work done while up visiting family. There are five lovely rooms, some pictures of which I have posted here. The rates are ridiculously reasonable. In short, if you're in this part of the world, this is the only place worth staying within 100 miles. We've been coming up here for almost ten years to visit family and we've tried every hotel and B&B within that distance. This is without a doubt the finest accommodation in the area, and is in a beautiful setting with some nice walks in all directions. Highly recommend anyone traveling through, or looking to get away for a quiet weekend. You won't regret it!

Every morning we were greeted with a delicious farm to table breakfast. The views were spectacular with the Wallowa mountains right in front of you and Idaho's seven devils mountains in the distance. The smell in the air of the pine and forest are worth every penny. Each room has a private deck with table and chairs overlooking the forest behind the lodge. Inside the main lodge is beautiful and clean, with a pool table and games upstairs. They also have cabins for rent and an entire house for larger groups. The cost is better than the hotels in town, and for the privacy and quiet, this is the only experience worth paying for. But if you need something, town is only a couple minutes drive. My sweety and I spent our evenings during by the pond, listening to the fountain and looking at the stars. The people here have been incredibly polite, friendly, and as helpful as you could ask for. I understand that ownership has changed hands in recent months, so don't give any heed or negative reviews. These people are not the same. Fantastic place! We HIGHLY recommend staying here. Our room had a view of snow covered mountains, a river and chicken yard below. We could walk anywhere downtown from Belle Pepper's, and felt comfortable to let ourselves in when we wanted to. The breakfast was delicious and just enough. Owners, John and Pepper, chatted with us and John ate with us. It was enjoyable to find out their story and to learn the history of the mansion and of the town of Joseph from John.
