Fresh 6:30AM donuts. I was a hit at home !

4 1/2 out of 5. Forgot how great this place is. Their signature offering is their Champagne Cake, a moist, melt in your mouth offering that ranks as one of my wife's favorite cakes. I tried their Blueberry Scones and was overcome with pastry bliss. These things are going to be a must have on future Great Falls visits. The donut and cookie selection is extensive if you get there early. Wait until 9 or so and you may be out of luck.

I'll let the picture of the chocolate donuts speak for themselves! Not a nice presentation for guests!

I found Hempl's online looking for a special cake to send my boyfriend for his bday while he is working out of town. When I called they were so sweet and helpful- they even put me in contact with a local courier, Debbie to help get the cake delivered. Hempl's is known for their Champagne Cakes- so that's what I went for. My boyfriend and his coworkers devoured the cake. The locals he was working with were super excited to see a classic Hempl's Champagne cake. Would highly recommend! read more

This place is a gold mine. Not a typical bakery person but had window painted that said Meat Pasties. Forced me to stop. Meat Pasties are a staple in the UP of Michigan. When I stopped they had run out but reserved 3 for me the next morning. They were as good as you will find anywhere. read more

Their food is OUTSTANDING!!! Packed full of big flavor. You know you're eating maple. They do not hold back. You can let their donuts sit for a day and they are still fresh although they usually don't last longer than an hour in my house. Their champagne cakes are so moist and melt in your mouth. Definitely recommend for food and flavor quality. In all fairness this next part was awhile ago. I knocked them back for in person customer service. The two times I went in person, they come across as dismissive or that I'm bugging them. Not rude just meh. I plan to go back to see if that is still the case. I'm a people person and I love when businesses welcome you with a friendly "welcome to ______ how can I assist you today"....then if necessary assist you in selecting items and even recommend their personal faves. Engage the customer to determine the level assistance they need. When I went, she came from the back greeted me and then stood quietly. I made comments like ooo those look amazing and nothing but crickets. I get being busy and getting annoyed when you are pulled from working on a project but you tuck that away when customers come in. I'm guessing they are used to customers coming in grabbing what they want and leaving. I had no idea what I wanted and this was my first time going. I'll update this review when I head back in everyone has off days. read more

This review is for today only. We're here from out of town but years ago we lived here and loved going to Hemples. Not today, we were there to buy a birthday cake which they had two of. However, we had a couple of questions but I guess they were too much for the woman helping us. After her heavy sighing, rolling her eyes, shaking her head, and rude responses, we decided to go somewhere else and find a cake. It was not the experience I remember from long ago. Maybe she was having a bad morning, I hope that's the case and she treats other customers differently. I don't usually write reviews like this but I felt that this one was needed. read more

Very good, priced nicely. The only reason for 4 stars was the lack of options, but it WAS 9:30 in the morning. I'm sure they sell the bulk quickly. My FAVORITE thing was the Apricot Pastry. Just, wow. We were traveling through so not something I'll be able to just stop by and get again, but I'm definitely inspired to make an apricot pie sometime. Just wow, wow, wow. If you like fruit and you like pie, give it a try. =) read more

Hempl's is a window into the past that I am very glad is still open! We had the best danishes ( cheese and Bavarian cream filled), jelly donuts and some incredible Strawberry lemon bread. I'm told that their Champagne cake is the stuff of legend. Give them a try! read more

I remember Hempl's when in the 50's they were called Super Maid and were part of the Super Save Markets, and then Paul Matteucci sold to Paul Rasmnson(?) who at that time was the head baker. I now live in San Diego, but people still send me, now and then, a care package of Rugulah which I just received yesterday. Sill the best. read more

Great tasting, from scratch items but a horrible woman working there! She ruined the experience while I was in Great Falls for a family visit. Maybe if your customers are over weight you shouldn't talk so loud to the other employees about them! My daughter heard YOU!!! Dismiss that rude woman!! read more

While we were looking at the pastries, we were told that drink orders needed to be placed at a different register on the other side, which was perfectly fine. We placed our drink order there and then moved back to the pastry counter to order our pastries. That's when the process seemed to slow down. It took a while to get everything ordered, and the flow of service felt confusing and unorganized. They also forgot to put the herb biscuit in the bag until it was pointed out. We later realized it hadn't been warmed up either. If I had been taking it somewhere without access to a microwave, I would have been extremely disappointed. On a cold day, a cold bacon and egg biscuit just doesn't work for me. I'd like to think it was simply an off day for a couple of the employees because the person who took our order was genuinely pleasant, and that kind of friendliness makes a big difference. As for the food, it was very good. The almond-filled scone was delicious, the macarons were excellent, and the herb egg and bacon biscuit was great once it was warmed up.

Take a trip over to the SW side of town. This Bakery is worth it. You should try to get there early because the most popular items sell out. You must try the Maple Bars and if your lucky they will still have some Fruit Pizza available. read more
