I always have loved this store even before moving iff the island. They gave really neat knickknacks and tchotchkes for literally all ages. Much like what the Peanut Butter Warehouse was like in its heyday pre Ike, minus the random bakery. The lady working there was very nice. Two friends and I visited Hendley Market today. As usual we went in different directions to locate our preference of merchandise. The three women behind the counter were having a very opinionated discussion about a current news story (lost submarine). Not only was the conversation loud, it was insensitive and hateful. Supper cute store. I haves lived in Hitchcock for 6 years and my husband and frequent the Strand a lot! Because this little gem of a store sits of to the far end of the street we have never walked far enough to even notice it. I walk into the place and I was so quint and quirky. Even came with a very large dog just lounging by the register. There were wonderful little soaps to buy and try. Knickknacks of sorts of things. Little silver spoons, knit dolls Geo stones and other rocks. I was glad we finally kept waking! I will be back some time very soon. The owner was very sweet. Proudly deserves the title of "best and most unique shop on the Strand". Unlike most of the other shops, this place has decent prices for the Strand which usually caters to tourists because of the location to the beach and Pleasure Pier. You can find some outlandish and unusual trinkets, home decor and even Galveston memorabilia here. This is a shop full of oddities but has a World Market feel as well. The whole store has a Gothic vibe with creepy old photographs of random people, necklaces and rings with human teeth in them, old newspaper print outs of crazy attractions and events, funky books, antique jewelry, maps, vintage prank items such as plastic rats and even an entire section dedicated to the day of the dead. Fascinating place for those of us who like a little bit of "weird" in our lives. I know that they set up a booth at local attractions and we were able to score some homemade soaps for stocking stuffers. Make this a stop on your Strand tour, for sure! read more

I stopped by Hendley Market during an antiquing day trip to Galveston. Admittedly, I would not call this an antique shop. While there are some antique items for sale, they are an afterthought at best, designated to the lowest and uppermost shelves for a bit of interesting decor. So if antiques are what you're after, this is not the best option in town. That being said, I still enjoyed Hendley Market for what it is--a quirky shop offering a wide range of items--art, gifts, coffee table books, children's items, imports, etc. The layout reminded me of the book and home goods section of an Urban Outfitters. I left with some neat finds and will be sure to explore again the next time I'm in town. read more

In a sea of touristy gift shops, Hendley Market stands out. It is on Strand Street, but it's on the periphery. Both physically and mentally. You'll find the standard fragrant soaps and candles in harder to find scents. If you've been to Jubilee in the Houston Heights, then you've seen the same cubed candles. They also sell cutesy printed recyclable, reusable shopping bags (again, the same ones are actually cheaper at the Bishop's Palace gift shop). Eccentric, gift quality books, stuck in nooks and arranged on central tables, can be found at fairly reasonable prices. They have some pretty quirky, yet subdued jewelry made by local artists, and items "imported" from foreign lands - Guatamala. The thing that really caught MY attention, was a wooden wrapping paper rack full of reprints of turn of the century diagrams for $4. As an example, I got a diagram of the different "emotional" sections of the brain. It's called The Picture of Good Health - Diagram 1. Just so you know, if you get hit in the back of the head, you may lose self esteem, continuity, or cautiousness. (I know so many who must have fallen and hit their heads or been hit over the back of the head with a baseball bat!) It's a little bit antique-y, a little bit quirky. LIke the Donnie and Marie song, only vastly different. I'd go back again, or recommend others to head here, but if you like antique shops, or want a truly unique souvenier, head to the Antique Warehouse over on 25th...well, after you've been here. read more

This is one of my favorite shops on the Strand. Note: Not your typical tourist shop. It's something you'd expect to see in Austin on South Congress. It's like Galveston charm meets Urban Outfitters. Awesome things you will find here: vintage photographs, anatomy posters, handmade soaps, original artwork from local artists (as well as non local), cookbooks, rugs, quirky salt & pepper shakers, antique books, and more. Definitely a must see shop if you're in the area. Prices range from very low to very high, so there's something for everyone. This is my favorite store on the strand. It's full of neat boutique/eclectic things. My favorite part of the whole store would be the nativities from around the world that are all fair trade. We have bought several nativities here as gifts for friends and family. Very unique and love that the countries use local resources to make the sets. Another favorite that I pick up as gifts every fall would be their deer or beetle cider. It's this delicious concoction all packed tightly into a dried out orange peel that you either put in apple cider or red wine. It's the perfect holiday drink and seriously always a hit. They are also great gifts for coworkers or friends! Plus, they are a very own Hendley Market product. Love supporting local and Galveston is me and my husband's second home (almost) so this place is a must always! read more

This place is amazing. I'm kicking myself for coming to Galveston so often and never stopping by. Usually, my Strand-walk ended at 21st street before turning around, but I've found that going that extra block reveals a beautiful store chunk full of quirky and unique things from the old to the new. The prices are all across the board and you can find just about anything within your budget- be it a necklace under $15 or vintage medical charts for $70-100. Their antiques are of the odd and interesting variety, which is good on an island that already has a bunch of antique marketplace-type stores. This is definitely a place to go if you're interested in really unique ephemera. The decor is beautiful. Take a look at the sideshow posters when you go in. They really add to the ambience of the place. read more

Summer time on the Strand used to remind me of miserable shopping trips with my mom when I was too young too understand what it's like to find a gem of a gift store, and also too anxious to get my butt to the candy store (see review for La King's Confectionary for further explanation). Now, at my old, wise age of twenty-five, I have grown to fully appreciate the good taste my mom handed down to me. Good taste like that can get you in a lot of trouble at a store so unique as Hendley Market. I've been known to call these lovely ladies and make sure they're still open before I head to the Strand, because if they aren't open, there's really no point in going shopping at all. To attempt to describe everything they sell would be futile. Each time I visit there is something more special and unique. Some things I've found that I love include papel picado-esque placements, handmade postcards and letters, perfume, handmade jewelery, and really funny/quirky books. I could shop here for hours, and often consider going solo so I can do just that. At Hendley Market you will find things you might never see again, so get it while you can. read more

This little gem is my favorite place to find cool knick knacks and actual historical items from the 1900's from the era of the Galveston Hurricane. It is pricey but there are books and souvenirs from all over the world there. I don't want to give too much away, as I just tell friends visiting that you have to see it for yourself, but every time I come to Galveston, I visit Hendley's. My only complaint are the hours/days of operation. I wish they'd be open for more days so make sure you find out a head of time if you're going to the Strand, that this place is open on that day because it really is a joy to visit. read more

Hendley Market's claim to fame is offering Nativities for sale from all over the world. They're Latin American folk art looking for the most part. This store offers lots of original art/one of a kind but affordable gift items for girls. European postcards. Chinese silk coin purses. Scarves. I got 2 jade bead bracelets for $8 each. I miss you, Hendley Market, and I'm so glad you came back after Ike. Hendley Market has more character than most other stores in Galveston. It's definitely not geared towards being a souvenir shop, but if you are visiting the island, you still just might find something you need to take home with you. I didn't check this place out for the first few years that I passed by it in the Strand area. Maybe I thought that it'd be too hippie-ish or was actually a "market" (grocery?). After high school I finally figured out that it was a cool quirky place to shop for various things (um, examples: jewelry, books toys, purses, old coins, stickers, ornaments, magnets, stationery, etc.), so I've been going for 10 years or so at this point. If you are familiar with shopping destinations in Austin, then this comparison will work: select items from Tesoros, Toy Joy, and Uncommon Objects, all together in one store! I guess all that that description leaves out is that this place also usually has nice soap/perfume/lip balms. Some of the items here seem somewhat overpriced, but others seem underpriced, so I think it all evens out pretty well. I hope that they continue to expand to their original size (or bigger of course) as Ike recovery continues (the last time I visited was Thanksgiving '09). read more

If you don't have a necklace made from silk cocoons, stop now and get to Hendley Market, they come in all the cool colors. Sadly they are only opened Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Was not leaving the island until I had made a stop in here. Birthday gifts for two hard to buy for women, checked that off my lengthy list, found them instantly. A book on non-harmful pranks, can't wait to try them on soon to be victims. Will require some whip cream, and you can't find that here. As a collector of pop-up books, they had the best pop-up book on ships. Night lights in the shape of baby hedgehogs, got to have it. Children's toys for those of us who refuse to grow up, bountiful, antiques, not many but some small items, paper goods, if you are craving a slice of Florence they do have some beautiful Italian papers. Just finished decorating your bedroom in a nice French flair, perfect hand towels to compliment the ooh la la. Renovations are beginning, that is awesome for the Strand for a $1.25 in the parking meter, you can do serious retail therapy here. read more

Along the street, numerous shops selling clothes, glasses, jewelry, etc populate this area. Clean (to an extent), packed with items, gives you the Tourist feel. Products: (??) Each to their own. I wnjoyed looking at the multitude of things. They got exotic soap, hand made jewelry from many countries, fine jewelry, gags such as water squirting camera and fake hand pranks, etc. Price looked right. Not too expensive but also not too cheap. Alas, I didn't find anything I wanted on a whim. I did not review and revise to save time. read more

I happily browsed this treasure trove to the tune of Bon Iver and Radiohead. The older women behind the cash register were friendly and helpful. Out of all the shops on Strand, this is the only one really worth spending time in. You'll find one of a kind souvenirs here. My wife and I stumbled upon this place while taking in The Strand Historical District...my wife fell in love with Hendley Market. The only way to describe it is if you have been to a coastal town or mountain town and run across a store that's eclectic and cool and fun to browse around. Give yourself some time to go through all their stuff. They have lots of different things like jewelry, etc. that seem to resonate on the female level but doesn't translate to my male brain...even so, my wife loves the place, I bought her a bunch of things and she still talks about it...so it gets 5 stars in my book. Lovely quirky store on The Strand down a couple of blocks from the main hubbub. I instantly went into a zone upon entering and forgot about my husband and child...too many cool things to see. Think worldy little treasures meets hip children's stuff meets retro toys, old books and steampunk skeleton shadow boxes. I bought some odds and ends, husband purchased a set of mathematic encyclopedias from the 1950's and was so freakin excited. Great place to see. read more

This would be a great store except that in the middle of their children's books display they sell copies of "The Story of Little Black Sambo," a notoriously racist picture book. When I asked the woman working in the store why they sold it, she simply replied that they always had, and kids like it. The fact that your store has traditionally peddled racist books does not justify continuing to do so. This isn't a harmless item - the visual and textual stereotypes are teaching kids many lessons, none of which I want to perpetuate. It's shameful that this store doesn't care about the message it's sending. I refused to purchase the items I was planning to buy because I won't invest in a business that actively chooses to profit off of such explicit racism. read more

Is this place ever open? Between my vacation to Galveston last year and just this past Monday-Wednesday, the hubs and I tried to go here everyday and it was never open! There was always a sign on the door that stated, 'Closed. Hours 11-5. Maybe they're only opened on weekends? Maybe the store is closed forever (even though you can clearly see merchandise through the window)?! I hope someone else has better luck. read more
