Totally with you on the whole "finish one project before starting another", and it's 3PM and lanes are blocked off but workers and any sign of work are seemingly non-existent. It's funny how the same roads get torn up about every year or two, only to leave shoddy workmanship and ugly patchwork scars. At least, if you're going to inconvenience us for weeks and months at a time, have the work ethic and common courtesy to leave the roadway surface in as good (or, preferably better) shape than before you started digging. Please. Oh, and Scottsdale police? I reserve the right to swerve around shoddy, crappy roadwork that the city either ignores or patched up and left worse, and not have it called "negligent driving." We the people cite YOU the city for negligent, mismanaged chaos which not only inconveniences, but in some cases damages vehicle alignments and front-ends as we dodge and amble through this urban miasma of ineptitude. Here's an idea: How about making road surfaces out of materials that don't break down every couple of years? Oh, I forgot - we're spending our trillions on unnecessary warfare and waste. There were also lots of people who were clearly under the influence all over the grounds surrounding the city hall building, sitting on the nearby benches, wandering around on the sidewalk areas, and into the streets. The streets surrounding this area are not equipped to handle the amount of traffic that was here. ADOT had closed down nearby I-10 and everyone who was on the freeway was now driving all over this area and there was nobody directing traffic and no assistance from local police. Being a city hall, you would think they would have organized with ADOT to ensure safety with a massive freeway shutdown. Not impressed by any means of this city hall and area.

I actually like to do jury duty (call me weird). Hey, what is there not to like about it? If your…read moreemployer pays you for the day, you get a day to surf your phone or read a book or just hang out and not think while you are waiting in the jury room to be possibly called. I've done jury duty in San Diego and now in Phoenix. This is the first time I had to report in as opposed to my group number not having to show up and being excused. The worst part for me is driving downtown but my hubby drove me so that was good. On the jury summons they show you where to park and they validate the parking so it is free for you. The jury room where you wait is actually a good size room with somewhat comfortable chairs. Tip - there is a row of chairs on the side of the room that have the outlets for plugging in your electronics. There are other places available to plug in, but these are convenient. Only bad thing is those seats get claimed fast so show up early! The court system really tries to make the experience very favorable and not too much of a hardship. There is a kitchen area where coffee is made and you can make tea. There are vending machines for water and soft drinks plus a fountain you can get purified water from free of cost (no charge for coffee or tea either). There's a microwave and a fridge if you need to heat up something for lunch if you are there. Bathrooms are located in the jury lounge too. You have the freedom to get up and go outside while you are waiting as long as it is limited to 15 minutes and you sign out and then cross your name off when you get back in. All in all not a bad experience! There were only 2 cases the day I had to appear and both cases were settled without going to trial so we were all excused by about 10:15 a.m. They say I won't be called for at least 18 months before having to report again for jury duty, but I wouldn't mind if it was sooner. Staff is very friendly and helpful! Nice touch to have the judge come in and thank us for our service and explain the process to us.

My daily commute takes me from Goodyear to downtown Phoenix…read more The distance is roughly 15-20 miles. With traffic, I can make this trip in about 30 minutes. Without traffic, only 15-20 minutes. I am a transplant from Washington State and have often made the 26 hour drive from up North, through Oregon, California, and back down to Arizona. Comparably speaking, Arizonans who use Interstate 10 (Papago Freeway) have a lot to be thankful for. First, drivers are free to use the carpool lane, except between the hours of 6-9 AM and 4-6 PM. In Washington State, single occupancy vehicles are restricted from using the HOV lane during all hours. I believe this is also the case in Oregon and California. Papago drivers also have more lane options than other states. For instance, Interstate 5 in Washington State only has 3-lanes in many of the areas that experience extremely heavy traffic congestion. In addition, during peak traffic hours on the Papago Freeway, vehicles have the ability to exit the highway and use side streets. Due to the grid-like road system in Arizona/Maricopa County, streets like McDowell and Van Buren run East-West for many miles. When traffic on the Papago Freeway comes to a crawl, I frequently exit and choose Van Buren street for a less congested option. In Washington State, there really are no other options. If traffic on Interstate 5 comes to a halt, then you're usually stuck there for hours. The Papago Freeway and grid system makes getting from point A to point B much less stressful than other major highway systems.

There was so much information available about the state of Arizona. It would be perfect for any child who had to do a school report and needed some brochures or books for their research and poster. I learned a few things I didn't know during my short visit here. One interesting thing I learned was that the state of Arizona is looking for homeowners who are willing to adopt desert tortoises who had to be removed from their natural habitats. That is pretty cool and is definitely something to consider if you live somewhere a tortoise could thrive! I will definitely pay the BLM a visit the next time I need some information on our wonderful state!
