I need to preface this review by saying when my friend and I made reservations to eat here a few weeks ago, we had been on the road, wine tasting for many days. By the time we sat down to our meal--served either with or without wine pairings--we were, to put it bluntly, all boozed out. My good Melbournian mate, whose powers of drink are formidable, summed it up to the waitress: "I would never have thought to hear myself say this, but I simply can't drink anymore!" We had, instead, complimentary sparkling water all night. So this review lacks what is a key part of this (or any) fine meal. Hentley Farms is in an extremely lovely setting: the Barossa Valley at its finest. The wine tasting room is a bit too self-consciously rustic, but the restaurant across a short lawn is a wonderfully modern, understated place--elegant and unpretentiously Australian. The tables are well-spaced apart and the waitstaff are plentiful and attentive. There's a great deal of personal care and a sense of privacy for such a public eating space. It was a seven course degustation, as is common in finer restaurants these days, along with a number of bouche amusées. In general, each was attractively presented, along with an often exhaustive description of each course (also increasingly common these days). In the case of Hentley Farms, however, a sous chef instead of waitstaff is dispatched to explain each dish, which allowed me to ask several questions. The head chef came out at the end and spoke with us warmly. I thought this was a reasonable twist on what is a necessary, if occasionally annoying intrusion. The dishes themselves were, of course, beautiful to look at, and often to taste. The fresh oysters in passionfruit juice with the essence of rosemary steaming underneath them in dry ice was an especially memorable (and flavorful) dish. The egg custard palate cleanser between the main dishes and desserts was also spectacular, served charmingly in an eggshell. But like so many fine restaurants, Hentley suffered slightly from less than memorable main courses. The meal started well and finished well, with excellent appetizers (if you can really call any course that in a degustation menu) and sweets after. The two "main" courses, however, a vegetable dish and a selection of two meats, while well-prepared, were sadly largely forgettable. The desserts were fairly good, especially the "pops" and candies that were not part of the seven course offerings. I am not sure the dinner ranked as one of my finest culinary experiences, but overall I had a very pleasant and pleasurable experience. And for service, I can only compare Hentley Farms to Chez Panisse. It is an extremely well-run restaurant, with an eye for detail and the needs of the patron. That in itself can make all the difference between a good meal and refined dining. read more

Probably our favorite cellar door experience in Barossa. The grounds, atmosphere, and overall vibe are excellent: a fusion of high-brow and low-key, a sort of rustic luxury fusion. The service was friendly and, most importantly, the wines are quite good, and they have a nice variety to try many different styles and varietals -- from a bubbly blanc de noirs (including not only pinot but also grenache), some good shiraz, and a cabernet that was our favorite so far that we have tried in Australia (and quite reasonably priced, as well.) read more

We discovered Hentley Farm Winery on our cellar stocking trip last year and were greatly delighted with the whole experience. The tasting rooms are set in a 100 year old sheep farm hut which has been renovated perfectly to give it refined elegance. I won't go into Hentley Farm's range of wines in detail, but ill strongly recommend you try a bottle of their Beauty Shiraz, which is an absolutely refined and delicious drop. Its not the top of their line, but is my personal favourite. In the last year, Hentley Farm has opened a Cellar Door Restaurant, which has been set up in another of the old Farm's old buildings - the stables. It offers two set menu options, using local seasonal produce with the wines that are matched to each. We indulged in the 'Discovery' menu, which the restaurant describes as - "a personal journey of discovery through different flavors, concepts, ingredients and pairings". This is a perfect description, as all of the 10 courses, were beautifully prepared, and unusually delightful in the flavors, textures and presentation. I would describe our dishes, but they will no doubt change regularly. It is truly a 2012 restaurant that is a true experience rather than a meal. I was most impressed with the Hentley Farm Cellar Door. Having visited 4 other Barossa wineries in the day & a half preceding our arrival, there was a bit to compare it to. Hesitant at first about the blackboard sign noting a $10 tasting fee* I continued past the obligatory winery dog into a most beautiful stone building. To the right, a tasting bar with a number of bar stools pulled up to it, to the left a dining table and multitude of chairs to accommodate larger groups. Continuing through, one walks into a room every person whose ever dreamt of having a house with 'character' will love. Two single seater leather chesterfield-style couches set near to a small window looking out upon the grounds with a mantelpiece framing a fireplace on the otherwise. The coffee table provides a perfect rest for the delicious glass of red you're already imagining you're holding! Step through to the furthest room for an even larger group tasting room that encompasses all these elements. Back at the front, perched upon the bar stools, we finally got to the 'sipping on delicious wine' part and were completely impressed. One white, one rose, and five reds later we were enthralled with the variety and hooked on the taste. The Hentley Farm vines that surround the property and the soil in which they're grown yield amazing results. Additionally, the cellar door staff are that fantastic combination of friendly and knowledgeable and what was intended to be a quick stop-off at the behest of I, became a lazy hour and a bit and we're already keen to return again. *It comes across that the $10 tasting fee is to ward off receiving busloads of boozed hens parties which detract from the relaxed-yet-refined atmosphere of the cellar door. Plus, it's pretty much impossible to not love at least one of their range so much so that you don't walk away with at least one bottle of something (against which the $10 fee would be applied - if it was charged in the first place) read more

Delightful! We came and did tastings and then bought delicious wine! The ladies doing the tastings were friendly and funny. We walked away with "the beauty" ($54.99), and "the beast" ($84.99), both beautifully wrapped with an army tag around the bottle neck. We had a lovely visit! read more

We toured thirteen Barossa Valley wineries over two and a half days. None served bad wine. I rated them on the quality of the wines, the breadth of selection, the setting of the winery (outside views and/or inside decor), and service. Note that sometimes service can be a function of how busy they were. This winery rated 4th of the 13. On a five point scale, they were: Wine Quality - 4 Wine Selection - 4 Setting - 5 Service - 5 They have a good variety of wines. Their cellar is an old homestead house, with neat historical elements to walk through. Nice view outside. And their restaurant served us the best meal I've ever had in Australia (separate review for the restaurant). read more

Rocking food for my husband's 50th birthday. So many good things to say. The only downside was the small serving of kangaroo (but fairly, I didn't warn them of my preferences, so my bad). Husband loved the 'roo' and I tasted it even though not a fan. The dish was extremely tasty but I just couldn't come at the idea. No drama, there are plenty of other things to devour. An amazing experience that went on and on. Lots of beautiful wine, fabulous food (OMG the oysters) and delightful personal service. Subtle lighting and exquisite venue. Pricey, but one of the best experiences we've ever had. Definitely worth the money and a go-to place for any festive event. read more

An absolutely wonderful experience, . 5 course menu with matching wines was amazing, and seemed to have a few extra courses thrown in. Staff go out of their way to make it a personal experience, with chefs appearing on several occasions to serve and explain our dishes. Food was out of this world good. No longer fine dining at its best! Not the perfect experience it used to be, they are resting on their laurels - shame! Have been to this restaurant several times now, with family and friends and have always thought it was the best experience. Twice now have had a disappointing experience and will probably not go back for a very long time! We had the degustation Menu with the wine pairing. The food has stood still and the wine pairing has gone down hill! Food up to a point is still theatre on a plate, but has lost the flavours, there were not the bursts of flavour at every bite and twice now we have had tough Kangaroo, this time we told the waitress and all she could say was "Oh you didn't like the Kangaroo" No we do like kangaroo but only if we can eat it! Each time we have taken new people and twice now the other people have not been impressed (we thought maybe it was us being used to the same menu) As for the wine pairing, well, the wine server/waitress/sommelier had no idea what she was serving, and it is all very well having Hentley labels but serving Red Wine with dessert, (presumably because they have run out of Hentley sparkling or a desert wine) was an absolute disaster! The staff used to be friendly and nice, now they are just aloof and really couldn't care about the customer! They used to be No.1 in the Barossa now I would put them far behind Appellation and Orana in Adelaide! read more

This is a review of the restaurant. Excellent experience top to bottom, from the cozy old farmhouse with leather chairs and a warm hearth where you can sample wines before dinner, to the simple yet stylish dining room in an old stable, to the well prepared food, to the unstuffy service. This restaurant is a model for what modern fine dining should be, providing a welcoming semi-formal atmosphere grounded in agrarian charm, thoughtful preparation and presentation of local ingredients without sacrificing flavour or trying too hard, and portions that leave you just satisfyingly full by the end of the meal. Like any good degustation, it was just as much an experience as it was a meal. The best food experience I have had to date. Beautiful fresh local produce made into exceptionally fine gourmet meals. The service is great, helpful and informative. There is plenty of space at the tables and the decor is lovely rustic/modern wood and stone. I recommend booking in a wine tasting while you're there to experience as many of Hentley Farm's quality wines as possible. The wines are amazing but the food was the highlight for me. read more

Amazing restaurant. If you enjoy fine dining at its best, and aren't afraid to pay for it, Hentley Farm is well worth visiting. The dishes were superb. We had the four course Du Jour, but it was actually six courses. All the staff were wonderful, and even the head chef walked us in (we were the first people to arrive for lunch).
