Herbert Hoover Middle School is one of the best middle schools I've attended. Some of the counselors, teachers and students were very nice. I had the confidence and support I need to help me succeed in my classes. Can't believe it has already been 9 years since I've graduated from Hoover. Mrs. Thomas and Mr. Lauderback were one of the best teachers I've known. They gave students assignments in a way that made learning an easy and interesting experience. Mr. Koppes is the best music teacher I've had, he really knows his stuff when it came to music. Mr. Austin taught a science class and a computer class, I was in his 7th period computer class in the 6th grade. Mr. Kujawa and Ms. Mannion were one of the best history teachers. I was in Mr. Kujawa's social studies class for summer session 2000 and 2001. Mr. Cunningham and Mr. Lee were also one of the best teachers. To most students, they thought of Mr. Cunningham as a strict teacher. He is strict in a sense that he wants to make it possible for his students to do well in their science classes in high school. Thank you Mr. Cunningham for the motivation that helped me learn and understand science. I really learned a lot while I was at Hoover even though my grades never averaged a 4.00. My hardworking efforts in working hard pass every class and be listed on the "B" Honor Roll really paid off! Mr. Stannard and Mr. Domer are no longer there. I wonder if Mr. Koppes, Mr. Austin, Mr. Kujawa, Ms. Mannion, Ms. Kelley, Mr. Lee, Mr. Cunningham, Mr. Lauderback, Mr. Comito, Ms. Lee and Mr. Jue are still there. Even as an alumni of Herbert Hoover Middle School (Hawks), one thing I'll always have with me are the good times I've had while attending middle school at Hoover. This is certainly one of the best 3 years of my life. Walking down Taraval St was practically an after school ritual everyday. I walk down Taraval St to catch L line or to 19th Ave to catch the 28! I am thankful to be able to attend Hoover because it's also a very good school here in San Francisco. read more

I'm a student in college, and I went to this middle school around 2013. Unfortunately I'm writing this review because I still have ptsd from my experiences with this school (i wish i was joking). There was one teacher who scarred me for life due to how he teaches. I was terrible at mathematics and I'd constantly get yelled at. I remember getting to the point where I'd try faking being sick so I wouldn't have to go to school to face this teacher, not only that, but I'd try GETTING sick just so i don't have to deal with that teacher. I cried to my parents about this incident yet the staff did not let me transfer out to a different class. My anxiety had gotten so bad that the rest of that year with him was absolutely terrible and I'd go in for counseling. Unfortunately they did nothing (shocker, isn't it?). A 7th grader should not have to deal with TRAUMA from any adult! I also recall a bullying incident that happened in 8th grade where a kid hit another kid with a baseball bat and there was little to no consequence. Not sure how things are now, but seeing the recent reviews.. it seems its just gotten worse. I highly advise you to not take your child here for education, unless you want their anxiety to skyrocket, get PTSD, and have them solely focus on ways to ditch school rather than look forward to going to school. As a former student, I had a few good years only due to the students and the underpaid staff in the back corner locked away. This school enables bullies! They try to downplay incidents when bullying is reported and do little to nothing to stop it. They are more concerned with the school and administration looking bad than the children's safety. A child was jumped and one of the kids slashed the boys leg with a knife. Parents outside of this incident were never notified and I doubt police were ever called. Things are covered up and swept under the rug by the principal and vice principals. Kids have no respect for the teachers and staff. Kids were texting and calling their parents when things would happen at the school so the administration implemented a no cellphone policy to try to avoid parents finding things out before they're able to do any damage control. Theft at this school is also not being taken seriously. The kids can't use the school lockers and are forced to carry their belongings around all day and when they want to put their things down, their stuff is stolen. As a parent I deeply regret enrolling my child here. Avoid this school and the whole school district if possible. read more

This school is over-rated. If you went to Hoover and liked this school, then you're lucky! I found it unfortunate that teachers and counselors are not capable of handing any situations properly, since there are just too many students. This is what's happening at Hoover; Many violent incidents take place, some are serious. Students are smoking just outside of the gate. Personal belongings could be broken or stolen constantly. Teachers don't treat students equally. Counselors are there to punish students, not to help them. Teachers never returned the submitted homework. If you want to gamble your kid's life, then send them to HOOVER! Otherwise, STAY AWAY! I know this sounds a bit harsh, but honestly, this is my personal experience at Hoover. read more

The year was pretty okay. Some of teachers were good but there this one teacher in math who just called home on me for a bad reason. The reason was because I didn't complete my homework on a day that it was suppose to be due But I still have a lot of time to complete it. So what was the point of calling home? I do this a lot and this the first time he has called home. Also when calling home, specify how the Aleks and school system works because my parents are scolding me because they didn't get the Aleks system. Good times! I met my best friend while attending Hoover from 2000-2003. It was a big change for me because I never knew how much bigger Hoover would be compared to Jefferson Elementary. Though my grades were not the greatest, I learned a lot of valuable things that I cherish to this day. I learned from a lot of mistakes a lot of kids make in middle school, and I'm glad it happened then rather than in high school or now. I enjoyed majority of the teachers. If you remember Mr. Madden, the BEST band teacher EVER; Ms. Mannion, the BEST history teacher; Mr. Contini, the BEST science teacher; Ms. Mudge was a good band teacher after taking over for Mr. Madden following my first year at Hoover. I really enjoyed doing all the concerts and competitions in Symphonic Band. We also played the National Anthem at a Giants game in 2003. 8th grade was one of the most memorable years and it still is. I'm sure things have changed, but I'll always remember those few teachers that got me interested in what they were teaching. read more

My child is a 6th grader at Hoover, and my impression of the school is positive. Communication with faculty and staff is prompt and pleasant. The teachers are committed and gifted. The facilities are clean. From what I've heard and seen, the students are pleasant (most of the time), precocious (as one would hope) and orderly (believe it or not). Having attended for about a year(late 2010-early 2011), i can say without a doubt that this was genuinely the worst, most soul crushing school i've even been misfortunate to have gone to. Though most of the teachers i met were a bit polite(albeit most not really helpful..), the school was horrible. This school had a large scale of bullies(i was even harassed by one of them, he kept grabbing at my breast, after three times i hit him, and he shoved me to a wall. A teacher was there, but she told me that i shouldn't hit. And the person who harrased me wasn't punished at all, and still kept bullying me afterwards. Since then I never told any of the staff because i felt they all wouldn't care.), it was really dirty(cafeteria food, paper, cigarettes, and around the gym/locker rooms you could find used condoms.), the food was of very poor quality, i honestly wouldn't be surprised if it was all expired(was the case with certain items.), and as i said, most teachers and staff were not at all helpful. While nice, there was really only one good teacher(her last name was Miller.). If you really care about your child, do not take them to Herbert Hoover, trust me. read more

What people don't talk about 1. Bullying, it is very bad here, mostly covered up by administration 2. Teaching, my youngest child's education level has dropped from above proficient to below 3. Some of the teachers and staff are bullies 4. I have been lied to by the administration on several occasions when I brought a problem up 5. My daughter defended herself against a boy who threw things at her and friends, she was labeled the assaulting the boy (by tossing water at him) and the boy became the victim even though the call confirmed he started the whole incident. OH, the vice principle was already chasing him down the hall 6. Lack of supervision, see item 1 and 5. I've also see kids beat up on each other with a teacher feet away, as a parent I had to stop the fight 7. Theft, its a big issue here 8. Ditching 9. This school doesn't prepare you child to move on to a high academic high school 10. Very little information is sent home 11. PTA SUCKS. I am a PTA member, misspent money in the thousands, no leadership, many actives have stopped Think twice and take a good look and ask friends who already have kids in this school before you enroll your child. 5 years at this school and it is sad to see what it is like now. Ever since I had graduated Hoover, major changes had taken place. First of all (and most importantly), one day a week, students get out an hour early, totaling 29 hours of school a week (rather than thirty when I attended). I know one hour doesn't seem like much, but one extra hour off could get you shopping/to the park/to the beach and you'd get home before sundown. Secondly, a new principal/assistant principal/and counselers were added. From what I hear, the counselers aren't as racist anymore (thankfully!) Of course there are some new teachers and it seems that the quality of teachers might have gone up, but the quality of the people that attend? Such has declined. read more

My son is currently a student at this school and I really wish I would of done more research before enrolling him. The majority of the teachers do not care no communication from any staff. I found out my son failed a class when his report card came in. I went to his school counselor and that was a joke not sure if she is overwhelmed or just in the wrong job. She didn't seem to concerned and told me that my son would be moving on to the next grade because the kids just get pushed through. And as far as teachers using school loop to parents in the loop its a tool most teachers do not use currently only two of my sons teachers actually post assignments and grades. read more

As a parent of three boys, one going into his third year at Hoover, let me tell you this: This school cares nothing for your child. That is a plain and simple fact. Unless you are prepared to stand and fight the good fight on every single front to get your child a fair break at this institution, look elsewhere. Our son had his lock cut and personal items stolen. No response from the school... It took weeks for staff members to look into it and then only because of our constant vigilance. Our honors student was placed in basic classes even though he's been a high achiever and GATE rated student since 2nd grade. When his basic teachers saw his work they immediately contacted us to let us know he had been misaligned. It took weeks to get him into his new classes and his teachers graded him down for the missing days. He had 4 ! English teachers last year and failed the class ! Never got lower. Than a B in his 8 years of schooling. An F. No call from the teacher. No notes home. Our son is trying to get into the best possible high school and now he does not even have a fair grade point. i loved hoover, NATHAN. maybe you didn't but i sure did. even if the school was divided. We were divided because of racical judgment. Social life at hoover wasn't blunt, it's the realest. you meet your realest or the fakest. Thats what's not what life's intention are, but they are the truth. You hang out with your group because they make you who you are. They are like you. I'm still proud of hoover. I had very fond memories here. When i started there no problem. But as the years went by, my satisfaction went down. In 8th grade the administrators made new rules i hated. Good events were canceled. The locker policy was unfair, the secretaries of the school are not friendly sometimes. I would like to see more field trips and more schoolwide events. Better faculty. The Special Day Class at Hoover for students with special needs & behavioral issues/disabilities is not paid ANY attention to by the administration at this school (principal, vice principal, "case managers", dean). A school that has over 1,000 students should be equipped & staffed to handle Special Needs programs/students if these students are placed at this school. This program lacks so many services, supervision & staffing that these students need & should be getting. My son had an AMAZING special needs teacher (Ms. Joo) but the administration at this school does not take this program seriously & is failing the special need students & the teachers of these classes. The principal is very quick to down play serious problems & basically waits for life threatening situations to happen to "make changes" that never even really take place. My son was basically set up to fail at this school. My sons teacher & I had so many great & positive plans for my son for his 7th grade year at Hoover. He came home the first week of school excited to be a school helper & we both could tell it was something he felt really good about. It was a positive opportunity & experience for him but that was taken away from him the 2nd week of school. Due to the lack of supervision at the school bus stop, my son was assaulted by another student. The vice principal sent the student home on the school bus with other students after he just assaulted my son. He could have assaulted other students on the school bus which obviously is a safety issue. With over 1,000 kids getting out of school all at the same time, they don't feel the need to have supervision or extra support for the students that REQUIRE additional supervision & support!? I didn't really get any type of concern from the principal until I had to request a meeting with her, the vice principal, the dean & my son's teacher. The whole tone of the meeting & lack of having any resolution or plan by the principal caused me to pull my son out of Hoover. They admitted that the entire situation was not handled correctly & was preventable but didn't really have any solution & seemed clueless on what to do or say. This is really a very SMALL piece of what is wrong with this program. There are probably so many other issues & things that have happen to special need students & students in general at Hoover that no one knows about or doesn't speak up about. I feel that parents should know about this experience. I had to quit my job of 5 years to care for my son & home school him. It took over 4 months for my sons black eye to heal but the emotional affects of something that was 100% preventable will take him so much longer to heal from. read more
