Old Skool Sleds on Display at the Surf Film Fest put on by the Southbay Boardriders Club.
    . ..

Last night (04-05-2013) my girlfriend and I attended the Surf Film Festival put on by the South Bay Boardriders Club & the Hermosa Beach Historical Society. This event was to honor the inductees into the Surfing Walk of Fame, to honor surfing, honor the way of life, honor how far surfing has come and for present surfers to remember where we came from and what we are required to do as current surfers to pass along the stoke to other. The money raised last night benefitted the Hermosa Beach Historical Society and the Surfrider Foundation. The Surfrider Foundation had a table set up and of course I found my way over to it and was appalled at the samples they are pulling from the Pacific 1,000 / 2,000 miles away from any shore line. If you are still eating sushi, you are insane!!!!!! The Surfrider Foundation showed pictures of fish caught 1,000 / 2,000 miles away from shore which stomachs were filled with plastic if you think that is safe to eat I have some Ocean front property to sell you in Arizona. The event last night was amazing. It was great to be around fellow surfers and Ocean lovers. The event was catered by Chef Barry's BBQ and live music was provided by Bully's & Matadors. The food was mouthwatering; the music was soulful, peaceful and had a great vibe. If you enjoy alcoholic beverages they had you covered with beer & wine. Local artists were present and displayed their works of art for all to see and admire and if you had the money to purchase=) When you moved downstairs the Hermosa Beach Historical Society had the history of surfing on display. It was great to see how far surfing has come, we are connected by one Ocean and I am glad to be doing my part to Honor the sport of Kings. Items were on display to bid on during a silent auction, my girlfriend and I bid on a few items but we were outbid= ( Before the evening was over everyone attending moved to the Movie Theater / auditorium where the South Bay Boardriders Club honored this year's Surfing Walk of Fame inductees on stage. The South Bay Boardriders Club finished off the night by showing John John Florence (Pro Surfer) movie 'Done.' The movie was good but the evening was MUCH better!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you to the South Bay Boardriders Club, the Surfrider Foundation, the local artists, the Hermosa Beach Historical Society, Chef Barry, Bully's & Matadors and everyone else who attended for being the good. It was an amazing thing to honor a great City, great surfers and a great vibe.

For some reason, it took over 30 years for me to finally check out Lomita Railroad Museum despite…read moregrowing up in South Bay. It's free, it's cute, and it's a fun little venture. It's a railroad museum with a few railroad cars and a small museum displaying vintage items, models, and what not. The curator is very passionate about this museum and locomotives and can give you a detailed explanation or tour about, well, anything railroad. And the best part? It's all free! But still strongly consider donating or supporting via their gift shop, this is a gem within Lomita and we gotta make sure it stays around for a long time. They also allow for venue renting of the grassy space and across the street as well for any events you want so keep that in mind as well! Small parking lot but there's plenty of street parking too!

This was another gem of a museum we found on our latest SoCal drive,…read more It was tucked away in a residential neighborhood and spread out over two plots of land. A replica train station (which housed the museum and bathrooms) and water tower, two cabooses, tanker and steam engine train were the main attractions. It also had its own small parking lot as well as a large lawn area. You had to press a doorbell at the locked gate in front and one of the staff will buzz visitors in and out. Two docents welcomed us and told us to ask them any questions at anytime. The museum was originally founded by Irene Lewis who used the money from her husband's miniature steam engines business. The museum was later given to the city of Lomita who managed it and admission was free (though donations accepted). Outside the train station we learned via a detailed photo spread just how the trains were moved to and installed in their current places. Inside the museum contents were well organized and spanned a variety of subjects including uniforms, model trains, telegraph (where one could actually tap messages in Morse code), food services, historical train lines, and more. Head into the nearest caboose to see a bit of what it was like to live there and peruse the small collection of adult and kids train and railroad books. Overall time well spent if you happen to be in the area Fri to Sun.

For those who may not know, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, is free from 3 to 5 p.m…read more maybe only on weekdays but maybe weekends too. I am not sure, but most of the information is right, if one is compelled they can fact-broaden my statement. I went to take advantage of this offer but it was June 19th and in honor of the holiday everyone got in for free on this day. But apparently it was a last minute decision. So poor reporting seems to be more like offering information as it comes, not in a malicious way, or incompetent way, more in like the town crier gives what he knows in excitement and it is the responsibility of hearers to know what to do with the information, including vetting it responsibly or accepting it as a gift when given by surprise, even though it could have come in handy earlier. So I entered and I made a beeline to the Butterfly Pavillion. I think it was 12 dollars and worth every single cent. And I write that as a full-blown understatement because exaggeration did not seem the way to go. Like saying this place was worth more than 12 dollars, it was worth the weight of a camel's back in gold. The experience was beautiful. And that statement can be easily understood. I mean butterfly garden + momentary visit= beautiful. But more than that it was a type of beautiful that I had not experience before. It was a new facet of nature's beauty that I experienced. Mostly because I had never interacted with butterflies in this way. For instance, there was a butterfly with wings that were a strong bold blue, almost neon, and for sure, vibrant. Like a royal blue not because it was that shade but because amongst blues it would have palatial lineage in its shade. We were warned that butterflies might be on the ground. And on two experiences two were. The first I encountered was not flying. And the younger members of the experience made sure to announce the butterflies presence and its vulnerability. I feel like sometime in this place's history a butterfly did get stepped on. And for no other reason, than the natural happens. In the second occasion, a butterfly was trying to fly or stand still and could not because the winds made it topple. During that moment a butterfly apparently landed on my back. Man people, if not all, wonder if a butterfly will land on them? And what it would mean? I mean, it could be good news. Saying that a butterfly landing on a person is an omen of disaster does quite fit the visual of the insect and what horror brings. A butterfly did land on my wrist and of course one can't help but feel special. Like, the butterfly chose me and its trying to communicate something. Something important that the universe wants me to hear. What exactly that is? I am not sure. I need to reflect on that later or I will know when the butterfly effects comes clearer in time.

First of all, this museum is epic. The exhibits, the layout, the vibe is spot on. Honestly, this is…read morenext level and the caliber of this museum is beyond even what I could imagine- and look, I've got some high expectations!! Second of all, it is in LA- the heart of it (but not fully the "heart") and I had no idea the Coliseum, LAFC stadium and USC are all Nextdoor!! Which, so awesome but wow be prepared for parking, people and events. And woweee did we have "events" happen during our visit....thanks to the museum's super safe safety protocols, we got sheltered in place for hours. I mean HOURS due to populations outside that were unpredictable, which unfortunately is pretty pervasive in LA. Surprisingly? The PA system or announcement method in the museum was not great. My friend and I had to really strain and get under a speaker to even hear we were locked in. That is concerning. What wasn't concerning however, was the response. We mentioned to a museum worker how we had been there since opening and were concerned. He immediately ushered us into a the members/donors spot that had snacks and refreshments, and a spot to collect ourselves. Everyone seemed calm and the whole operation was finally clearly communicated and all was well. The museums response after was admirable as they situated our tickets and charges for special exhibits after the chaos of the day. The customer service is very impressive. Please visit! Just remember: LA Okay thanks bye!
