Parking was easily with two lots on each side of the museum as well as the street. Two wooden buildings were part of the museum but only one was open to visitors. There was a nice garden in between and a small water fountain bubbling in the middle. We made our way inside and greeted by the on site docent. He was friendly, outgoing and spent a few minutes briefly relating the history of the city and exhibits inside. A mixture of photos, artifacts, and timelines about the city were in the front room. I thought this room was nice to understand how the city evolved over time. The 2nd room display was about George Freeth who moved from Hawaii and credited with introducing surfing to California. Room 3 was not as interesting to us since it was mostly about local high schools but Room 4 highlighted local companies like the former GTE phone company and previous Olympic Games in LA. We spent less than half an hour here before we made our way back to the PCH. If in the area then it would be a nice stop but not necessary to go out of your way.

This museum is a little hidden gem in the heart of San Pedro Little Italy…read more It is located on a corner of the City Hall Building for Council District # 15 and it is only open on Fridays and Saturdays, but well worth a visit, especially if you have children. I truly enjoyed the tour with the very knowledgeable Chief Gordon (Gordie): he explained in detail the story of the most particular artifacts and you can detect from his words how passionate he is about his job. One of the pieces I loved the most was a poignant painting in which all the faces of the firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11 were depicted. It was such a touching tribute! The Museum also has some historic engines and uniforms, as well as some firetrucks. If you are in the area, please stop for a visit and leave a small donation. It is a small thank you for the volunteers who work hard to preserve the local history.

Went to Fiesta Hermosa yesterday afternoon mainly to catch Pine Mountain Logs and ended up staying…read morefor hours. It really is one of those classic South Bay events that feels like the unofficial kickoff to summer. The entire downtown area of Hermosa Beach turns into a huge street fair with live music, food, drinks, carnival rides, artists, and hundreds of vendors spread throughout the closed streets. There were families everywhere, groups of friends hanging out in the beer garden, people walking around with dogs, and just a really fun community vibe overall. Pine Mountain Logs were great live and the Garden area had a relaxed energy with music going most of the afternoon. The vendor mix was exactly what you would expect from a big festival like this. Some really cool local makers and artists mixed in with a little random street fair chaos, which honestly is part of the charm. You can grab food from local Hermosa spots or festival booths, stop for a drink, wander the Makers Mercado, listen to music at different stages, or just people-watch for a few hours. It is busy, loud, and crowded in the best possible way. Really impressive that this has been going for more than 50 years. Events like this are part of what makes Hermosa feel like Hermosa. 5 stars

The weather was chilly and overcast but did warm up . My LO enjoyed the carnival rides. There are two ticket booths were you can purchase tickets. No cash accepted. Lots of vendors but I didn't really go look for anything in particular. Food - Yes, food is pricey but it's a festival so that's the norm. The food vendors do take cash, credit card, Venmo or Zelle. Parking - you can park at Northrop and take. Shuttle of there are numerous paid parking really close to the festival off of Pier Avenue. $25 to support Hermosa Schools for our parking lot and I felt it was worth it. There was a free succulent potting craft which was so fun There's lots of music and is definitely a fun way to spend a few hours over Memorial weekend.

Of course if you…read moreknow anything about Vincent Price the actor, you also may know that he loved art and for many years encouraged people to get involved with art. He wasn't kidding, either. He and his wife Mary put together a museum that is on the campus of East LA College. This is a very active venue, though hardly overcrowded. On the afternoon I was there, a workshop for younger people to explore art was being held in the same area as one of their current exhibits. (I should have suspected as much as a 10 (?) year old was leaving with a somewhat water-soaked shirt). As the friendly person at the main desk assured me, the workshop would not interfere with my enjoying the art. True! There are three floors at the VPAM. On the first floor were some indigenous artists (some local, some not). Always timely, the voices here brought a nice variety in their work. On the second floor, there were artists with perhaps a more global outlook. You might even say that the art was (respectfully) confrontational. Meaning: I did not feel attacked or anything. Rather, I thought the work invites some real dialogue. There was a film, for instance, from the POV of a salmon trying to reconcile its life and its place in the world since a big dam has since interrupted their lives. There were also some colorful prints questioning the value of mineral mining. These works succeeded IMO by their beauty and skillful presentation that also asked questions that people may not think too much about. On the third floor is the Permanent Collection. Some donated by Vincent Price, but many others contributed, too. 'Form and Function in the Ancient Americas' 'showcases the wide range of Indigenous civilizations'. With many great examples, there is plenty to check out and enjoy without being overwhelmed by 'too much of a good thing'. One of the things I also enjoyed about VPAM is that it wasn't a huge undertaking to explore. Perfect for an hour or two, depending on you. So grateful for the helpful folks who help run the Museum. I look forward to returning sometime in the Spring, when apparently a collab with LACMA will open. There is also very much a connection with the Getty as they have sponsored much here, too. It's all free. Park in the nearby College lot as the regular lot behind the VPAM is under construction.

He has a wealth of knowledge of the Newland House and its history. I highly recommend visiting this HB gem - the oldest standing residence (since 1898) and a wonderful piece of history.
