At the end of the tour you get hot chips right off the machine !!!! Loved it. Absolutely a great way to spend a few hours, was interesting and informative, seeing the inner workings of the brand. After the tour you can buy a variety of things like shirts and every snack chip pretzel cheese puff they make !

Great thing to do on a rainy day. Kid friendly, but if you have kids, try to keep them under control? Won't go into details here, but I felt bad for our tour guide...he had his hands full with some kids that were all over the place. That's said, he did a great job maintaining his composure and shared lots of great information. Anyway, seeing the factory in action is very cool. If you enjoy shows like "how it's made" or any kind of behind the scenes experience, check out the tour. Towards the end, there are samples of hot, freshly made chips right off the production line. Delicious! The store is worth a visit, too. Lots of flavors to choose from and the "oops" section with some discounted product lines. FYI-Herr's is still family owned and operated. Learned a bit about the history of the business during the movie at the beginning and throughout the factory tour. No photos or phones during the tour.

The gift shop- no phones allowed through tour.

Tour was super cool and interesting! The sample chips are so fresh! They come right off the conveyor belt!

This is a review of the gift shop section of Herr's Snack Factory Tours. I was driving from Baltimore to Intercourse on US 1 on a Friday and saw this off the highway. I decided to check it out because I love factory tours of any kind. Unfortunately, they only run the tours from Monday to Wednesday. However, I purchased some of the imperfect snacks at a discount for my mini road trip, and they were a great deal. These imperfect snacks may have under or over seasoning or other imperfections, but the snacks I got were perfectly fine and tasted good. Cheers to that!

We have done this tour for many years. It has changed over the course of time. When we first came it was free and first come, first serve. I liked it much better that way. Now, you have to make a reservation and pay a small fee. We also noticed that the introduction movie was changed and much less informative. We liked the older movie much better. If little kids can't sit through it, then offer a different tour for them. Why does everyone else always have to suffer cause people can't control and/or watch their children? We drive over an hour to get here and would like a tour that is both informative and fun. I have found that the tour is only as good as the questions people ask. So, if your on a small tour with very shy people, you are not going to learn any more then the script your guide follows. However, most of them are very knowledgeable if you ask questions. The hot chips are always the best part of the tour. Usually, your guide will give you a ton of chips and come around a second time. Our guide actually threw away the remaining chips instead of offering them to anyone. I love this tour but this time it was somewhat underwhelming. Bring back the old ways!!!

What a neat experience! Our tour guide, Don was very knowledgeable. He was kind, and polite. He even made us giggle a time or two. This was my first time at the Herr's Snack Factory. It was amazing to see how things happened and how they came up with how they do certain things. Just like many other reviewers said, the hot potato chips melted in my mouth! We loved the opportunity to purchase stuff after the tour. This is definitely something to do if you are a local.

Great place to visit and learn about how potato chips, cheese curls, pretzels are made, seasoned, and packaged. First, make sure you reserve tickets online to guarantee your admission. It's free! Walk ins are welcomed but doesn't guarantee you or your party admission. First, you are to enter a theatre room to watch a 10 minute film about Jim Herr, the founder, and the history of the business. Then, the audience splits into groups and are assigned to a tour guide. We had Kyle as our tour guide and he was great. It was a very informative tour. They even give samples of potato chips right off from the conveyor belt/machine. At the end of the guide, each guest receives 2 small bags of Herr's chip. They also have a gift shop and we were able to purchase certain flavored chips we never knew existed, lol, like jalepenos cheese curls, dill ranch flavored chips, etc.

***If you are a fan of potato chips and find yourself in this area, the Herr's factory tour is a must visit*** I was in Philadelphia and I saw a brochure of this factory tour. I was heading down to Baltimore and the Herr's factory was conveniently located along the way so I decided to make a trip since I grew up on Herr's potato chips (Herr's is a very popular brand in the Mid-Atlantic states). The factory tour is free and it features an incredibly informative and interesting overview of the origins of Herr's as well as how many salty snacks are made and distributed. The factory tour started with a short movie highlighting the humble origins of this potato chip brand. The film was made a while ago so it has a lot of kitsch value (the production values were quite poor). It is an interesting overview covering how the company ran into some issues (such as the factory burning down) as well as the many benefits they extend to their employees (including having a share of the company's profits). The factory mostly runs by itself. The machines are quite elaborate--peeling the potatoes, slicing the potatoes, putting the potatoes in a water bath to remove the starch, frying the potatoes, performing a photo quality check of the potato chips (and removing undesirable chips), applying the dry seasoning for the various flavors, sorting the chips into bags (big chips in bigger bags, smaller chips in the snack bags you would get at a gas station), and then sealing and packing the bags. Herr's features many salty snacks and not just potato chips. They have a popcorn machine as well as a really interesting room that puts out their baked pretzels. This Herr's also has a line of tortilla chips and there is a different deep frying process for the tortilla chips to ensure the chips maintain their crispiness and do not go stale too quickly. The tour also allows you to eat freshly made potato chips that Herr's personnel pull off the line. It is a unique experience given that you get to enjoy hot, crispy and light potato chips (noticeably better than what you would experience with a bag from a grocery store). In addition to seeing the many great machines, it is interesting learning about the process of how potato chips are made. Very little goes to waste as the starch water finds its way to local farms and potato chips that fall on the floor go on to become feed for animals (though I am not sure if animals meant to be later eaten should be feasting on a lot of potato chips). How flavors are selected and come together is interesting too. Herr's has a marketing group that comes up with the flavor concepts and then they send out the ideas to companies like Kraft to develop seasoning to match the concept. The Herr's team does some taste testing to finalize which seasoning best resembles the intended flavor. One of the reasons why the flavor selection is so interesting is due to the many flavors that Herr's showcases. Unlike Lay's or Ruffles, the number of flavors that Herr's features is astounding. There are your standard options like salt and vinegar, sour cream and chives, cheddar, and barbecue, but there are so many other flavors like Old Bay seasoning, dill pickle, cheddar horseradish, baby back ribs, ketchup, Kansas City Prime Steak, hot sauce, red hot, cheddar bacon jalapeno, and buffalo wings. The tour ends with, of course, an exit to the gift shop as well as a complimentary bag of their kettle potato chips. The gift shop is definitely worth exploring. They have so many varieties of potato chips and many of their flavors are in snack bags so that you can get a lot of flavors without spending too much or wasting too much. They also sell their potato chips that do not make their quality standard; these chips come at a reduced price. The tour personnel are very good. Our tour guide was very nice and very knowledgeable on all aspects of the Herr's business (she also had an incredible resemblance, both in appearance and voice, to Melissa McCarthy). Herr's factory tour is a very fun as well as educational experience. The tour is located in a rural area and it is not overly commercial so you get a lot more intimate and inside details than what you would get at a major corporation factory tour. The tour is also free and provides both hot chips off the line as well as a complimentary bag of chips to go. If you find yourself in this area and love potato chips, Herr's is a must visit. This Herr's factory location has a huge parking lot. The parking lot is free and it is easy finding an open space.

It is a nice tour. The guide was great. Sadly my tour had these devil like kids on it. The poor guide had to talk over these kids. I would suggest they offer a kid free tour option that can be booked online. Also not being allowed to take photos get a minus 1 star no.matter what. It is a tour of tourist and tourist like photos.

    Were here.

We had a great tour. I have been visiting for years and this is the first time it wasn't a free tour. I must say I miss some of the parts from the past videos, especially Chipper but nothing stays the same. Still a great tour for all ages and the snacks are top notch. So many flavors now you will be able to find something for everyone.

From my one visit, Nottingham appears to be a very good park overall, with numerous pavilions for groups, and several other amenities. But it's the serpentine barrens (and also the proximity to Herr's and its Christmas light display) that attracted us the other day. Serpentine barrens developed from volcanic activity that accompanied plate tectonic collisions. So these barrens are believed to date from 480 million years ago, when the current Appalachian Mountains were created from one of the tectonic plate collisions. The serpentinite bedrock is not nutrient-friendly and it includes numerous rare metals that also inhibit routine vegetation. But it can and will get overrun by pine trees and other species that can handle the conditions. American Indians contained the barrens as grasslands by burning them off periodically. Then the new growth would attract grazing animals and make for good hunting for the Indians. Colonists did not understand or care about the dynamic and ended up losing much of the specialness that these barrens represent. In Nottingham, about half a mile up one of the marked trails, you first see the savannah-like ecosystem of the barrens. There are some trees, and some shrubs, but you will also soon see the green-tinged serpentine rock. In some areas, it is all the faint green color. Half a billion years old, you might remind yourself. There are also many pure white stones that may have resulted from the same or other process; don't know any more than that. A ranger in the office told us, You will right away see the strangeness and difference of the barrens. Well.... I could see it. My wife thought the strangeness and the green rock were both overhyped and the reality was disappointing. So be forewarned, you will probably not be overwhelmed by the serpentine barrens in this county park -- which has several trails and covers a lot of ground besides the barrens area. But if you are interested, the barrens are there and fun to tour. And if you're not, you're still going to get some good hiking up and down the modest hills of the territory. I will be going back in warmer weather to see what these barrens might look like in spring and summer. There is no charge for entering this county park.
