This is a very nice place, but if you want a better feeling for the Amish life, go to the Amish House. After having been there the last time I came to Lancaster, nothing compares. The price is very reasonable for what you get. You can tour the house, which was given by a very sweet lady. Then you can tour the grounds and they have a few shops. It's very clean and well laid out. We then went on what was supposed to be a 90 minute drive, but it ended up being 75. Our driver did not go out of his way to make the ride anything more than business. I was expecting it to be narration with a little bit of fun mixed in. He was very informative though. We stopped briefly at an Amish market, but I was hoping we would've stopped at someone's house like we did on the Amish House bus tour. On a cheaper budget, this will suffice to get to know about the Amish ways of living. But I highly recommend going to the Amish House by Target instead. read more

Their bus tour drivers are very inconsiderate and act like they are privileged being a tourist trap. They stop and/or pull over without notice and block traffic flow with no consideration for other people on the road. They park in the right away at businesses and make it difficult to navigate and exit the parking lots. I've lived here my whole life and they by far are the worst offenders. I understand pulling to the front to unload passengers but then have the common courtesy to move the bus out of the traffic flow. Perfect example...I was at Crossroads Cafe yesterday the driver unloaded right at the front door and then left the bus parked there and went inside. I had to help direct a lady backing out of an actual parking spot so she could leave. The driver could have easily pulled over to the side lot out of the way but chose to decide he was more important than the other people there. read more

While visiting the area, I wanted to learn more about the Amish community but felt uncomfortable visiting an actual farm/home. (Just feel as though I would be intruding in some way.) This was a nice option for me, as it is a home formerly owned by an Amish family, now a museum. The tour of the home was interesting and I always like a nice little petting zoo. I'm writing this from the perspective of a middle aged person taking the bus tour by myself. I walked in on a weekday afternoon. Only 4 others on the bus, so there was a ton of room. Our tour guide (Gary?) was very friendly and super knowledgeable. The whole trip including a stop at an Amish owned shop took about an hour and thirty minutes. Since there weren't many people on the bus, I was able to pepper our guide with questions. I learned a lot in a small amount of time. The market we stopped at had a lot of food and craft items - all very affordable. I would have bought dinner rolls or a fruit pie if I had a good way of bringing it back. After the tour, I took about 30 minutes to visit the grounds. Not too much to see but worth a quick walk around - restroom stop, some animals, blacksmith area, a few buggies, farm tools, and gift shops. All in all, I really enjoyed the visit and hearing about the Amish community. Would I bring my family? Probably not. I have two younger kids that would not be able to sit through the bus tour. read more

There's Something Amish Privately owned educational tour and farm that focuses on the endless fascination around the local Amish population. They feature three tour options: (A) bus tour ($25-18); (B) self-guided tour that includes a 25min guided presentation ($12-7); and a (C) combo tour of the two above ($32-$18). We chose option B, as sitting in a small enclosed space with a bunch of strangers isn't exactly our jam these days, but you do you, Boo. The Good: *The lady who gave us the 25-minute guided tour was terrific and very knowledgeable. Be sure to have questions ready because she was more than willing to help answer. We even chatted her up well-after the tour was over. *Bring quarters--or get change at the register--to feed the barn animals. *Gift shop is pretty fantastic. Full of lots of great food, trinkets, and souvenirs, with a lot of them being Amish-produced wares. *We felt like it was a good value for $12 to just casually stroll around, pet/feed the animals, and just enjoy a nice relaxing walk around the place. The Meh: *Self-guided portion inside the schoolhouse and such could have more info inside them. The Ugly: *A lot of the animals on-site here are rescues; so they may not look like they're in the best shape, but they all appear to be well-cared for, as all the stalls and barns were fairly emmaculate. Learning about the Amish in person has been on my bucket list for years. We were visiting Philly for the weekend and took the drive out to Lancaster to visit this place. On our drive in we saw a few Amish on the way riding in the horse carriages which was like wow. We took the self-guided tour that included a mini house presentation and a little history and current events of the Amish that was very educational. We toured the farm area, grounds and the model of how an Amish school would look. There were areas where you could feed the rescue animals who looked real sweet but a little sad. Everything was clean and organized. We stopped in the little shop to purchase some snacks and learned some more personal experience about the Amish from the worker, Ms. Mary who was real sweet. I brought some fudge, jelly, banana bread and honey mustard pretzels all handmade by the Amish in the community. Baby, those honey mustard pretzels were gooooddd!!!! We had a wonderful visit to The Amish Village while visiting for a long weekend! While the woman at the front desk selling the tickets was a bit snarky, our tour guide Mike was wonderful! We did the basic $13 tour of the Amish house, which was a great 25min introduction to basic Amish life. The two gift shops on site had a great selection of local products for a fair price. We loved visiting the farm animals! A lot of other reviews mention how the animals look sad, yet there are signs explaining that some animals had certain ailments that were being treated be veterinarians. We were a little confused about the different tickets and when we asked, we were told the $27 ticket included the bus tour and the farm. It sounded like the house was also included but it wouldn't be guided. After we left the building we passed the house and were told that our ticket didn't include the house. It would be $8 more. We ended up walking around the farm which was really cool. They have animals you can feed, buggies you can sit in, a covered bridge and a really neat schoolhouse. A few other buildings have local snacks, crafts and souvenirs you can buy. The bus tour was great! Our guide was very knowledgeable and honest. Our only complaint was it sounded like we were going to get to spend time talking directly to an Amish family and seeing their farm. I was visiting Pennsylvania with my family and my aunt and uncle took us on an Amish Village tour. I believe the bus tour lasts about an hour or so. It was super interesting to learn about the Amish and their lifestyle. I think the tour was my favorite part of my visit to Pennsylvania. It was so informative and it felt like I was on a school field trip. We got to see buggies, one-room schoolhouses, farms, and a few of their businesses. Our tour guide was awesome and provided us with all kinds of interesting facts. They took us to an Amish-owned local business where you can buy their homemade jams, baked goods and some arts and crafts. I got a whoppie pie which I had no idea beforehand was an Amish creation. I went on the premium package tour. It began with a house tour. The tour guide led us through the living room, kitchen, bedroom, and basement area. She showed us the clothing and clothing styles they wore and the reasoning behind their style choices. She showed us their traditional beds and the handmade quilts that were displayed in each of the bedrooms. After the house tour, we went on a tour bus ride showcasing the backroads of Lancaster. The driver showed us the farmlands and schools. The bus made a stop at an Amish-owned store and an Amish-owned creamery farm where we could purchase handmade ice cream and root beer. Really great tourist spot. You get a house tour and viewing of the grounds with very little of Amish living. The only building that was of value was the model building of an amish school that you can walk into. This tour is the most basic but I opted for the full experience which included the bus tour (45 mins). I suggest doing both the basic and bus tour because the bus tour was super informative. The house tour is great and informative but it's fairly short but a really neat experience. The tour guides are very informative and have tons of details memorized and they deliver it with humor; at least our guide did. The bus tour lasts 45 mins, it slows down at various spots while providing tidbits of information about the amish community and culture. The bus stops at a real life amish home/gift shop. Overall a really neat experience. This is a "one & done" type of experience that once you've done it there's really no reason to repeat it. read more

The Amish Village was a nice place to get out and stretch your legs after a long ride from Washington DC with my family (9 of us in total). We did the guided hour and a half bus tour and Al, the bus driver, talked the whole time, giving us a history of the county and Amish life there. The bus was comfortable and air conditioned - a big plus on this VERY hot day. We stopped at an Amish store that had lots to sell. I bought applesauce, bread & butter pickles, pretzels, a package of Parker House rolls and some fresh root beer - all hand made. The Village itself is meh. Self guided tour outside - there is a one room school house to see as well as a blacksmith building, several Amish horse drawn carriages (without horses) for photo ops and assorted livestock (peacocks, ducks, goats, chickens, etc.). We missed the inside lecture which might have made the outdoor tour better. Definitely take the bus tour though especially if it is hot outside. You will see some beautiful landscapes and farmland. read more

I was disappointed in this "tour." I had family visiting from the midwest and wanted them to learn a bit about Amish, for example, why they don't use electricity or cars, which wasn't even mentioned. Our guide, who told us he was Italian, was not knowledgeable about Amish customs or traditions. There wasn't apparently a route, he turned when he felt like it, saying it was impossible to get lost. He pointed out house after house just saying "Amish" or "English " based on whether there were power lines. That was interesting only the first time he pointed it out. BEWARE: If I knew what this was, my family and I would have NEVER fed into this. We thought we were going to be given a tour my the Amish themselves. Silly us right? These are non Amish people teaching about the Amish culture and making a profit on their behalf. To make matters worse.... THE ANIMALS! ALL the animals are enclosed in SMALL spaces and they are ALL SAD. They fight each other for food=they don't feed them enough or properly so people can spend money to feed them. One animals, Sage, her eye was TERRIBLE. it was badly infected. Why isn't this poor thing removed and taken care of? Why are all the animals sad? Why are they in TINY spaces? Loved this place! We were in town for a wedding with my son and had a few free hours. I took my 11 year old son, this was his first experience in learning about the Amish and their way of life. The house tour which was lead by a Mennonite woman who explained life in a typical Amish home was very informative and interesting as we went from room to room. She was extremely gracious and answered everyone's questions. When the tour of the home ended there were some animals you can visit, pet and feed. As you walked through the mock village there were plenty of photo ops with buggies that you can climb in, a school house with desks you can it at, and a barn with the different types of farming equipment. They have two great gift shops with plenty of great items with varied price points, everything from homemade soaps and jarred goods to toys for kids. read more

We went on the Amish bus tour. I wasn't sure what to expect but we caught the 3:45pm and it turned dark by the time we got back so it felt rushed and uncomfortable to yell out questions. Best to grab a seat by the window and close to the front of the bus to follow the tour, but expect to turn left and right like you're watching a tennis match. We had Karen as our indoor tour guide and she was absolutely delightful. The way she explained and taught us was fun and easy to remember. We learned lots of things from her. Our experience here was very positive. The self-guided part was interesting, but probably the least fun for me. You get to see some farm animals, a school house (that was pretty neat), a blacksmith showcase, and a couple places that sell souvenirs and things of the like. The bus tour was great though. Our driver/tour guide, Wayne, did an excellent job explaining things during the drive. We stopped by one area to sample some amish items .... I ended up buying a whoopie pie here, which was delicious but really sweet. There was a lot more stuff, like pies, cookies, fruit, vegetables, wind chimes, lemonade, souvenirs, etc. When the bus tour was complete, we did a tour of the Amish home there, which was informative, and they explained how they dressed, did their daily routines, what was allowed and why, etc. Overall, it was one of the best tours I've taken. I've lived here all my life and decided I finally wanted to go to Lancaster with my family. Took the tour this past weekend. I was surprised to see how well the Amish people live. Hundreds of acres of corn and tobacco! their houses and land are immaculate. I did find them rather greedy, I know, don't get angry. They have all this land, and they grow tobacco. Maybe some don't somke, but they are responsible for people getting sick. Yes we all have a choice to smoke or not to. But these people are suppose to live a simple life, they make a ton of money selling tobacco. They do smoke, but I thought that goes against their religious beliefs? I didn't belive it till we saw a young man smoking and sitting on his outdoor picnic table. The guide did say that some do smoke and drink. Extremely wealthy, yes, they work hard. They pick and chose what affects their religion. Apparently not everyone is on board, that's interesting because the reason why they left Europe in the 1800's was because of religious persecution by the Catholics supposedly, in my opinion the Catholic persecution of them not baptsining their children as infants was an excuse to do as they wish, like they do now. But now they are here, amass all this land and crops that they sell for lots of $, but that's not greedy? And if you want to have a day with them eat, talk, and see how they live life it goes for $65.95 a person no matter the age. Greedy. Driving a buggy and horse and not having electricty, but battery run lighting is just being frugal. It's not religion it's a way of living your life. read more

I REALLY WANTED TO LOVE IT, however this so-called "tour guide" completely screwed up the whole experience for me. Girl, I don't know if you hate your job or you're just plain rude and don't know it, but PLEASE leave that at home. I just couldn't believe the way she was presenting the Amish lifestyle and traditions. She literally mocked every single aspect of their lives, from the way they dressed, to what they do on a daily basis. I went on this village last year and this year. Yup still not impressed. The kids were bored out of their minds (i have young children). The tour of the amish house was ok but brief. This was a tour we did in Lancaster one day when our sister-in-law was visiting from overseas. It was basically a walking tour through a house and farm where the guide gave you historical info about the Amish and how they live and what they do. It cost about 7.00 per person and lasted about an hour or so. our group had about 15 people, mostly adults, some were quebecers, then there was our clique. They take you through a real life Amish house where they explain about heating, electricity, clothing and Bibles and weddings. It also covered history, geneology and languages (they speak 3 languages- church german, regular spoken german and english) also most Amish drop out of school at grade 8 to work on the family farm or in construction, handicrafts or tourism. It was pretty insightful, but they revealed that men grow a beard after they get married. That all their clothing is usually home made, and that they can wear any type of footwear available. When normally all their clothing is plain and basic and doesnt carry any logos. Our tour guide was american, but there were a lot of workers or employees that were Amish here. Next they take you to the farmhouse outback, and show you what typical types of animals are domesticated by the Amish. Horses, sheep, pigs, etc. There was also a covered bridge where you could take some photos, and an old buggy carriage you could get in and take a photo. They have a small store where you call buy all kinds of Amish made products, like butter, jam, bread, jellies, beef jerkey, etc. Birch beer, shoefly pie, sweets & cakes. Quilts, bonnets, aproms, placemats, post cards, pencil sharpeners, all kinds of toys and souvenirs and handicrafts. stuff to decorate your home with, it was both fun and informational. read more

This is very tourist geared and not an actual Amish village - but a wonderful way to get an overview of the Amish, see a wonderful Amish home, also see a schoolhouse, blacksmith area, stores to buy Amish made (and mass made) food and souvenirs and also a lot of animals to see and feed. While many locals would point out this is not a true Amish village and true Amish villages would not be open Sunday - it is not a true Amish village - it is a wonderful replica where you will see how the Amish live. We spent a few hours roaming the little replica village, shopping laughing, looking at interesting animals ... While I have not taken their bus tour, I would recommend the basic house tour first (exploring the village solo) then moving on to a different horse and carriage ride given by actual Amish for thru an actual Amish farm after the village experience and house tour here . That will provide a great overview of the culture followed by a more authentic Amish experience but with more general facts. I went on the premium tour this past weekend with my boyfriend and had such a great time! For $29 a person, we had access to a 90 minute bus tour, half hour house tour, and free roaming of the property. The bus tour was very personal, as it was only us and one other couple! It was a Sunday so our tour guide went the extra mile to try to show us a church service as best she could. I believe our tour guide was named Nancy and she was fantastic! She made some cute jokes and tried to make things interactive, allowing for questions and making sure everyone was comfortable. The property has a few stores with Amish made products and snacks that made great gifts, as well as cute picture spots. There are a few animals for kids to pet and feed which was tons of fun! This was my first time going to the Amish village because my cousin (from Boston) would like to go. We decided to be tourists for the day. I learned a bunch during the bus and house tours of the amish village, but my highlight would be when I got to free explore the makeshift town, and play with all the retro things they had scattered around. Came here about 12 years ago, and entrance was free of charge. This time around they are charging at $10 fee, and rightfully so. The place is very pretty, and you are given a tour. Interesting fact, the reasons that the clothes hang on the walls was because there were taxes on each room and closets were considered rooms. Also, the rooms have bigger openings due to the owners ability claim two rooms being one. Today, Amish individual have houses that look the same as a non-Amish residents. They have a nice side petting zoo on the property, and a school house. There is a story to buy souvenirs. If you ge the hungry, then I can recomend Katie's across the street. This place is a rip off. They use elements of Amish lifestyle in their themes and presentations, but it really is an expensive tourist trap. The 90 minute tour is weak at best and doesn't come close to truly covering the history or culture of the area. Part of the problem is that this attraction is run by the English, not the Amish. Tours are hurried. The tour guides are dry and don't respond to questions well. The information shared is very basic. The attraction itself is not well kept or well interpreted and overly simplistic. "This is a donkey"... no, you don't say! When we were there the animals looked rather rough and unhappy. Didn't see water in some pens. It seems they could do a better job of caring for their animals. This was an OUTRAGEOUS waste of money. There are much better attractions in historic Lancaster County!
