We decided to take advantage of the 25-minute pretzel bakery tour. At $6, it was a great deal. I love history, I love pretzels, and the bakery tour was a great way to merge my love of both. Our knowledgeable tour guide told us of the history of the building, what drove Julius Sturgis to become a pretzel baker, and the history of pretzel baking in the Sturgis family and how the family has adapted to changing times (they're still making pretzels although not in the original Lititz location). We even got to practice twisting a pretzel of our own (I was far from a natural). Everybody got a little bag of pretzels for our pretzel twisting efforts. The gift shop has plenty of great pretzel treats, pretzel magnets, pretzel ornaments, and such along with very tasty soft pretzels for purchase. The Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery is a great place for a fun little visit.

A tour of the country's first pretzel bakery is offered for those who pay. It's guided and doesn't last too long. You can also just pop in to see the lobby and shop where you can buy their famous hard pretzels. For $2, you can get a warm pretzel. That's what I got. It was warm, but didn't taste very good. It's still worth going if you love history.

They're all certified Kosher, too! When the hubs and I knew we were going to be in the area, we made sure to call ahead to make an appointment to take one of their free tours. Our tour guide was Ms. Vera, and she was super informative and sooo sweet! We got to see the making of the dough, how it was kneaded by the machines, how each pretzels were all made by hand (super impressive!), how they were put in the oven and baked, and then saw how the pretzels were seasoned and packaged in the bag. We also had the chance to try a hot-out-of-the-oven extra dark pretzel - super crunchy, but a little too 'burnt' for me, but it would be super delicious dipped in hot spicy mustard or some type of cheese! The hubs and I bought a bag of extra salted pretzels and the garlic, so can't wait to dig in! Just note that this is a true pretzel factory, very no-nonsense, and even the sign is hard to miss. We are all fairly local folks but we learned so much and ate amazing food. I appreciate the level of service Zachary provided including helping to fit this in my budget. All communication was prompt and easy to understand. The payment process was simple. Instructions for where to meet and questions about food allergies or other issues were appreciated. Even in the rain, this was just so much fun. We started at the Maryland Center for History and Culture. As a museum junkie, I loved that we started with a quick tour through Baltimore history! And we got to pop into the Jim Henson exhibit. They have the Labyrinth Dress!! After that we started walking. Did you know the Ouija board was created in Baltimore?? I did not. We walked into the Enoch Pratt Library and poked our head into the Peabody. And we did a quick tour of the Washington Monument. I did not know you could go inside it for free. The food part was even better! Started at Tio Pepe's which was delicious and such a cool building. After more walking we stopped that Helmund for more food. The area is beautiful with many different eclectic type shops and eateries available. Liz, our tour guide, was fantastic. She knew a lot of the history of the area and some quirky tidbits that made the experience that much better. All of the stops on our particular tour were top-notch.
