Awful, scam. An Indian man rented me a car and told me that if I returned it early, I would not be charged the entire trip. Turns out, I needed the cancel the trip after 1 day, and this place charged me for all 7 days still even though I returned after 1. Total scam. His awful boss, Mark, watched on the entire time while I tried to get my money back. I am considering legal charges against Mark and the Indian guy and this establishment. Don't go here. Pick and drop off was fine. The issue... we dropped off the car however we could not find our ipad anywhere at home. Called and spoke to someone at the Elgin location and they said they would go out and check (realizing that this is above and beyond). After about 30 minutes, my wife called again and the person said they would go out and check right then. My wife asked if she could make sure to check in between the seats as well as under the seats. Hertz called back about 3 minutes later and said that nothing was found. So my wife made the 60 minute round trip commute just to make sure. The $1400 ipad was clearly visible in-between the console and passenger seat. Why not just say... no, we won't go check, rather than straight up lie. Or maybe she wasn't lying... maybe she checked with her eyes closed. I was going to give this one star but figured that wouldn't be fair due to one or two lazy employees. 100% our fault for leaving it behind, but if you say you are going to check... why not check. read more

Rented a car while mine was being repaired, I asked if I returned it early would I be credited the days of the early return the clerk said yes. That was a lie. They brought me the car and parked it in a handicap spot. When I asked why it was in a handicap spot I'm not handicapped nor was the clerk. She replied we always park here. I asked what if a disabled person needed the spot she replied it's a big spot they would fit. So wrong on so many levels. While the car was clean inside but smelled of cigars, the outside was very dirty. Really gross. When I returned the car I asked if I would be credited the 3 days for the early return. I was told no because when I asked the clerk about the early return she did not ask me the right questions. She didnt ask me? I still had to pay the extra days. They lie and have no respect for the disabled. I do not recommend. read more

The vehicle we rented was the filthiest car I have ever been in. A previous renter had smoked in the car, and so much deodorizer was used that it was difficult to breathe. We had to have the windows cracked all the way from Chicago to Memphis both ways because it smelled too bad to even turn on the fan or vent system in the car, which made it very cold in the car because it is winter and freezing outside. There was crud, crumbs, hair, etc. in the center console, and stains on the seats. We had to clean the inside of the car just to be able to sit in it. The interior windows were so filmy and dirty that we had to pull over and completely clean them all just so my husband could see out of them. The outside was also very dirty. As we were leaving Chicago we noticed a big red warning that one of the tires was low on air so we had to get air. I am absolutely dumbfounded how they could have rented us this car - the red tire pressure warning comes on as soon as you start the car. We had to get air again in Memphis - the tire obviously had a slow leak. There was also a strange knocking sound coming from under the hood that was very unnerving. I asked the salesperson at the Hertz to please give us a different vehicle but he said he had NOTHING left to rent. He gave us no options, just apologized. We had to get on the road to make our appointment in Memphis so we did the best we could with the car. Also our return time was 7:30am on Monday, 1/2. We arrived to return it at 7:30am and there was a sign on the door that said they weren't open until 9am because of the holiday. We arranged our entire morning and got up early to be there at 7:30am - why wouldn't they tell us that when we rented it on Friday???!? When we returned it, my husband explained all the issues, and again was just given an apology. I will never in my life ever rent from Hertz again and have never been so disgusted or disappointed by a car rental. read more

I have been very disappointed the last 2 times I have used this Elgin location. The first experience was at the end of August, I made a reservation online and asked to be picked up at 3 pm. At 3:10, I called and asked where my ride was and was told I didn't schedule it myself (well then, your website is not that great if it doesn't tell you that you need to schedule it yourself IN ADDITION TO requesting it in your reservation) and that the agent would schedule it now through Uber. Well, an hour later I called back and asked where my ride was, the agent lied and said it had been called for and should be there shortly. I know he was lying because while on the phone with him I got a text from Uber saying that a ride had just been ordered. I called the agent out on it and he didn't say a word. I was subsequently 2 + hours late for my departure and that ended up altering every single plan I had in place while I had the rental. I was SO disappointed at the bad service and the lying. Then, my second experience was this past weekend: I had booked a reservation online for a 7 passenger SUV (this time I skipped asking for a ride because I couldn't be late again). When I showed up to pick up my vehicle, the woman at the counter said she couldn't find my reservation and just stood there, as if I had spoken a foreign language. She wouldn't help track it down or tell me what I needed to do. SO after standing there waiting for her to help I realized she wasn't going to do a thing, I called customer service and they helped straighten things out. I gave her my reservation number and told me what vehicle I was being provided - I said "does it seat 7?" She replied no, only 5. I said "I rented a 7 passenger vehicle because I have 7 passengers. How is a 5 passenger vehicle going to help me?" She said they don't have any 7 passenger vehicles anywhere to be rented. So beware Yelpers: Customer service at this location is absolutely TERRIBLE, and it's the only one close to my home. I have been a gold member for years and am very disappointed with how I've been treated the last 2 times I was at this location. IF there were no vehicles for my needs, why did no one attempt to contact me? I needed a 7 passenger vehicle for 7 people, not 5. And I wasted 45 minutes of my time trying to sort things out with ZERO help from the local agent just to find out that they had no vehicles. This is not how a company should run its business, especially for loyal members. read more

I was given a rental with the seat belts in the back not working and no passenger wiper blade. Then when I asked for an exchange the customer service rep said I needed to fill the tank up before I could exchange the car. She said by law I needed to, which I replied it's also by law that I should be given a car with all seat belts working. I couldn't even have my daughter in the back until I got the exchange. read more

When we got there they tried to give me a mid-size SUV. I refused, and said I rented a FULL SIZE SUV. The guy at the counter said "No you didn't" 5 times, until I showed him my confirmation which clearly showed I did. Next he said "ok, well we don't have one anyway". About 18 months ago I had a terrible experience with this Hertz location, but I had a great experience renting from this Elgin location recently. I had a car accident and had to rent a vehicle while mine was in for substantial repairs. Initially, the woman who took my booking over the phone seemed to be on top of things. I made the booking and everything seemed all set. Turns out, I needed the car one day earlier. When I called, they could not find my original order anywhere. That same employee was useless in figuring anything out. Later, I found out she was a fill-in from another branch. The branch manager, Yolanta, took over my problem and solved it immediately. They were able to pick me up that day, give me a pristine, clean, beautiful 2019 vehicle, and all at a really affordable rate, much lower than the original quote. Great experience. In the middle of the 2-week rental I started to get these annoying messages from "corporate" Hertz, telling me that the car was overdue, even though I rented it for a full 7 more days. Turns out that corporate "overrode" the rental period without telling the branch. Yolanta was able to fix the issue quickly, without my having to do anything. Clearly, bad systems and poor oversight of corporate Hertz are the problems here. Certainly, the experience was not problem-free, but the branch manager, Yolanta, handled everything quickly and professionally. The car and price were both excellent, the pick-up and return were fairly speedy and straightforward, and I will certainly rent from this location again, should the need arise. read more

Important Part We used are IPASS for all tolls, gave a copy of are IPass information to Hertz to be safe. Friends told us they were stuck paying Hertz "Plate Pass" fees several months after their rental even with an active IPASS. 7 weeks later $46.20 in "Plate Pass" fees. I have called them three times and mailed requested information twice. "If not paid by X date, will be turned into collections" Paying the $46.20 today. I had my credit card reissued. I have a feeling they would have charged my car if they had the new one. My First time renting from Hertz. Not my first choice, they had a very good price on a SUV. The SUV was not clean, smelly french fries on the side of the drivers seat. We washed the windows and gave it a good cleaning. First stop for gas, low tire drivers side front. We only drove 7 hours to our cabin. We checked and filled tire on the way back. No big deal, we cleaned and notified Hertz. All good. Never had this issue with other carriers. Unbelievable poor service. Car was supposed to be at Crystal Lake for pickup. They called in the morning and said it would be late. I agreed to come at 9am instead. I come later to provide some breathing room and no car at the location, and no one has a clue. Instead I go to Elgin (where it was coming from) to pick it up. Still not ready and the staff and manager could really care less. I am obviously upset dealing with the multiple lies. Instead of apologizing, I am told they are a 5 Star rated facility and all the problems are corporate.... Not hers. To make matters worse, I am told "Imagine all the other people who booked weeks ago.. You booked yesterday and making everything worse". It is easy to believe you provide high quality service when you are not responsible for anything. If you had no cars, say so and I would have found alternative choices. When the sales staff finally got around to me, he starts writing up a new manual contract, despite me having the reservation and contract rates booked online. He has no idea why he is doing it, except that his manager (Ms 5 Star) told him too. Then he asks me to sign, and says he will fill in the rest later. Really? Ms Manager finally returns and berates the employee and eventually gives me the keys to a dirty Hyundai that was several levels less than what I booked (and does not match the paperwork). I told her this, and she says that is their system and I would not understand. It also had a service light on due to low tire pressure that I had to take care of. Car was dropped off several days later in front of the store, and now I am waiting for them to post the receipt and charge 1 week later. I have called, and no one knows what is going on. I travel with Hertz a lot, and Presidents Circle with them due to my loyalty. Dealing with this very poorly run location really questions my decision to stay with this chain. read more

This Review Is Location Specific. Not a reflection of Hertz in general. Just this location. When we arrived the vehicle we were given hadn't even been cleaned, and I'm not being too picky here folks. The car had actual garbage from the previous rental throughout. Like easy to clean garbage, bags of chips, pop cans, and drive through cups still in cup holders. Not to mention, enough crumbs to cure hunger in a third world country. The agent doing the walk around could honestly have cared less, making a terrible attempt at correcting this, by literally not cleaning any of it, lol. Ok, whatever, we'll manage. Van drove great, everything worked, so we quickly got over it. Used it for our rental period and returned. Then noticed an extra charge come out of our bank account. Tried calling this location and the lady who answered was rude. I couldn't even finish my sentence, as soon as she heard me say bank account and charge, she interrupted me and said, "That's not even us sir, that's corporate. I have no idea what the charges are or for. Would you like me to give you their number?" I will absolutely continue to use Hertz, however I won't use this location anymore. read more

Sometimes when you do something you think, "What? Am I in the twilight zone?". This place is so understaffed, unprofessional, and just not right. We rented a car over the Christmas holiday. Due to the bad weather, and it being the holiday we gave them the benefit of the doubt. When we went in to pick up our car, and there was so many people waiting in line. When it was our turn, we told them our name and we were picking up the car. The young blonde guy (I wish I remember his name), went into the computer and seemed to pull up our reservation. He seemed to have found it, and told us our total was over $200. We stated our reservation was for $109,incuding taxes. He then had another gal who was in the back come out and look, and we asked what the charges were. She said we were paying for an Extra driver, and took their insurance. We did have an extra driver but we booked it through AAA our motor club, and when you do that an extra AAA driver is free. WE ALSO DIDN'T ORDER THEIR INSURANCE! They stated they removed the charges, and it would then be $114. Okay, so they then went out to get the car, and some gal pulled it behind the building, and then we waited and we waited and we waited... He then gets on the phone and is calling someone regarding putting our reservation in MANUALLY???, he then went in the back room and was saying something about it being in a safe??? We waited and we waited, there was 3 parties behind us, WAITING and WAITING. Finally, he brings us the keys and says I can't print you a receipt because it's not in the computer.... what??? So, we took the keys and asked if they checked all the fluids beforehand and they said yes. The car WAS FILTHY! It was bad weather, but the car was full of salt from the previous driver, and there were little bits of paper and stuff all over the seats in the back. AND it only half HALF a TANK OF FUEL, so we went back inside and this guy said "oh don't worry, I will make a note of it...." We started our trip. 4 hours away on the expressway, it started snowing in Iowa. We went to use the wiper fluids, and guess what, NO FLUID! We had to go and buy fluid at a gas station. But, by now, the wiper sprayers were frozen. Luckily we made it to our hotel. Upon return of the vehicle. we NEVER got a receipt because they still didnt have our reservation in the computer. We hesitated to leave without something in writing. we called day after day and was told we would get an email, never did!~ Finally, went back in and they tried charging us over $200 again!!! We also made sure we only came back with half a tank of fuel. We wouldn't leave until they fixed it and some gal from the back came out and fixed it... finally we got a printed receipt with a reasonable charge and without an apology, she just handed it to us like, oh well... JUST DON'T RENT FROM THEM!!! read more

I arrived 1 hour before closing and it was a Saturday so all other rental cars companies were already closed until Monday. Nobody even called to let me know in advance. This car rental agency is horrible. The owner was rude, unprofessional and I believe slick racist. First of all, he called me SIR and I am clearly a female. I made my reservation online with expedia as I have done at least a dozen times in the past (although not for this location). I pay with a CREDIT card, not a debit card and have never had to pay a deposit. When I arrived, it took them almost 30 minutes to try and check me in. They kept saying the system was down but the rude man never apologized or anything. Then when he finally got his system up and running he asked for my license. When he was done with it, he tossed it back to me across the counter. I understand it is Covid but seeing as though I handed it to him, I feel that he should have handed it back to me. I let that slide. Then he quoted me a price of $280.00 but then told me my credit card was declined because he ran it for $480.00 (the cost of the rental and a deposit). Then he said "I CANNOT RENT YOU A CAR BECAUSE YOUR CARD DECLINED", rather than ask me if I had another form of payment or anything. I asked how it declined and he mentioned the deposit and I told him I knew nothing about it and was getting ready to get my other credit card out but this man started arguing with me saying that mention of the deposit was in the contract. What contract fool? I made a reservation and we never got to the contract portion. My reservation on expedia said NOTHING about a deposit. But in any event, rather than be disrespected by someone who obviously didn't want my business, I took my credit card to Enterprise at 400 S. Randall Rd and got a car in 15 minutes. COMPANY POLICY IS TO RUN CHARGES ON YOUR CREDIT CARD WITHOUT CONTACTING YOU****** By far, the worst customer service I have ever encountered at the Hertz located at 1350 E Chicago St, Elgin, IL 60120. Even with my autobody shop prearranging my rental on a Thursday for the following Tuesday, Hertz didn't have the reservation set. The place only had 1 employee running it and when he locked up the place to come pick me up from the autobody shop across the street- we returned to find 2 customers outside waiting. Then another customer walked in. By the time this single employee got around to taking care of me, I had wasted 2 hours sitting in their lobby waiting for my pre-arranged vehicle. As soon as my vehicle was ready, I picked it up and was told by the autobody shop that Hertz would come pick up the vehicle. That was a week ago, and yesterday there was a random charge for $33 from Hertz on my credit card. I spoke to my autobody shop who said they would take care of it. I called the Hertz location today to inquire as to WHY the charge was there to begin with and to see if it was being refunded as I was told that it would be. I was promptly cut off by Katice (forgive the spelling please, I am guessing) and I was told that it had already been reversed. When I asked why it was charged, I was told that the insurance company had cut off payment and left 1 day as my responsibility. I asked why I was not made aware of that before my credit card was charged and I was told that wasn't their responsibility. I asked for a corporate number and was given a wrong phone number! I looked up the correct number online and when I spoke to corporate- I was informed by Cagney that it is company policy to just charge the card without speaking to the renter and that is the whole purpose for taking the credit card information to begin with and that it's the insurance company's responsibility to call me and tell me. I let her know multiple times that this is the insurance company of the person who rear-ended me, they did not call me, and they are not the ones running my credit card without my knowledge. I have used Enterprise multiple times without the excessive wait, the rudeness, and without my credit card randomly being charged a week after I returned the rental vehicle. Thank you for showing me exactly how your company functions and what they think of their customers. I will take my business back to Enterprise while encouraging my autobody shop and friends to do the same. read more

Renting from this location was far & away the best rental car experience I've ever had, almost entirely because of the dedicated customer service of Kantrice, the branch manager. I was driving through the area, several hours from home, when my car broke down. It ended up being that my only option was to rent a car, drive it the remaining few hours home, & then return several days later when my car was fixed. Renting a car is often a laborious process, & I try to avoid it at all costs. Particularly coming on a day when everything else was going wrong, I was completely dreading my trip to Hertz. I shouldn't have been-- Kantrice was immediately sympathetic to the situation, & despite the fact that we were there past when the location was scheduled to close, she didn't even flinch from ensuring that we would have a car to get us home that day. She was clearly in charge of the branch, & knew exactly what was available to her, & what was possible for us. She got us an incredible rate on an incredible car-- less than we were quoted online-- & was completely upfront about any possible fees or restrictions that might change our rate. More than that, her spirit somehow made us all feel better in the process. She took on the chaos of our day as though it was a part of our day, & made our needs into her needs. Anyone who rents cars frequently can likely appreciate the rarity of this kind of compassion. It didn't stop there-- when it turned out that my broken down car was beyond the point of repair, so I no longer needed to return to area to pick it up, Kantrice went WAY above & beyond, helping us to ensure that we could return the rental in our hometown instead of having to drive all the way back. I can't say enough about good things about the service we received & the care that was taken. This is exactly what a branch manager should be, & I can only hope that her spirit is contagious throughout the entire Hertz corporate organization. read more

I am very disappointed with Hertz Car rental. My husband rented a car from the Elgin, IL location on Wednesday, September 20th. The person who assisted him was the manager, Kantrice. She recognized him from previous rentals so she was quick to get us a car and get him on his way (her doing, not ours). She had given him a free upgrade and sent him on his way. On Thursday, September 21st we were in route of our out of state trip and were pulled over due to the license plate being expired. After being roadside with the officer for almost a half hour we called the Hertz location we rented from and spoke with Kantrice. My husband filled her in with the details and asked about switching the car at a location near where we were going; Kantrice was going to look into our options and call us back. We have yet to receive her call (from Thursday). Thanks to caller id they were not answering calls from my husband's cell phone but when he called from a different number the call was answered. Of course when he asked for the manager and stated his name she was never available... Today is Monday, September 25th; we are back in Elgin so I met my husband at the Elgin Hertz location to see about having this issue rectified, the manager was gone for the day and the other rep refused to give us a Kantrice's manager's information. I sat in a chair and attempted to call corporate from right there in their lobby. While on hold I was letting other customers know that they need to do a thorough check of a car if they're renting because Hertz rents cars with expired plates and the manager and staff offer no assistance in getting issues resolved. The rep that was there told me he would appreciate if I didn't tell other customers this stuff, he told me I should be professional. I politely told him that I am simply sharing facts with them and that Hertz staff should be profeasional. These people did not like that I was in their lobby stating facts to other customers so they called the police on me. Two officers showed up and heard both sides of the story. They apologized that we were having this experience and they suggested that we not rent from Hertz again, or at least not the Elgin location (as the Elgin location does not want us back). The officers also told me the best way to let people know about this is social media. At no point did I get out of line, and the officers told me that our frustrations were valid. It is absolutely ridiculous that all of this had to happen. It is even more ridiculous that Hertz management and staff are allowed to treat customers in this manner especially being that Hertz prides their organization on their customer service. We returned the car today (two days early) and will find another organization to rent from. It is a shame that Hertz is self destructive in this manner. read more

Absolutely HORRIBLE service. My husband and I rented a car from here through our insurance and ended up with a $600+ hold on 10/23 on our bank account despite the fact that the rental agreement had closed on 10/17. We went to the location to sort things out but no one was able to help us. We had to call corporate and ask to be transferred to a supervisor. As a matter of fact the "manager" "Yolanda" was completely incompetent and LIED to our insurance company stating that we had just returned the car to their lot and hour ago when in fact we had just been in our insurance office ten minutes ago from the time she stated. The office manager from our insurance company caught her & confronted her about her straight out lie. Then she has the nerve to call my husband to ask for the keys to the rental car when the car had been out of our possesion for 2 weeks and PARKED in their lot!! You mean to tell me it took TWO WEEKS for someone to even realize a set of keys were missing??? read more

Never again. I rent a car ever week or so to attend a class downstate, and usually use the guys down the street. This agency is fractionally closer, so I made reservation there. A car was ready when I got there, and the paperwork processing was reasonably fast. The car had some minor damage to the front, was missing the back hubcap, and needed to be cleaned (which I told them not to worry about!) I left, returned home, got my class materials and hit the road. Within 20 miles, I had warning lights flashing. I pulled over, made sure the car was safe enough to get back, then took backroads (I didn't think it could handle anymore toll roads!) and eventually got back to the agency. The person at the desk could have cared less, I think, but he would have had to work hard at it. He started to process an exchange of cars (while rudely dismissing another person who had reserved a car telling him they didn't have a car for him) even though I explained I could no longer make the class in time. The upshot is that I was charged for the full rental, despite having been given a car that may well have been unsafe to drive, and was in need of maintenance. I've not had a bad rental with the other place - and I haven't had rude service either. Guess they've earned my business: this place has not. read more
