Avoid this Hertz location at all costs. You'd be better off walking than renting a car here. Weeks after returning our rental, Hertz's claims administrator informed us that we allegedly owed more than $10,000 for vehicle damage. We had the car for less than 24 hours, drove it fewer than 30 miles, were involved in no accidents, and never hit anything. The alleged damage is so subtle that it could easily be overlooked during a routine pre-inspection. Despite claiming we are responsible, Hertz has no photographs documenting the vehicle's condition before our rental. If damage is subtle enough to go unnoticed by both renters and employees, and there is no pre-rental photographic evidence establishing when it occurred, customers can end up being asked to pay for damage they have not caused. That turns every rental into a game of Russian roulette. It's unreasonable to expect customers to inspect every square inch of a vehicle before driving away-- the burden of proof should be on the rental company. Are you supposed to crawl under the car? Check under the hood? Take a look at the picture of "$10,000" of damage and think if you would have noticed it. This experience has genuinely made me hesitant to rent a car again. If you take one thing away from this review, let it be this: document everything. Take photos and videos of every panel, every wheel, the roof, the interior--anything you can think of--before you leave the lot. And never, ever, ever, rent from this Hertz location. read more

I wish I would have read the reviews before I rented from Hertz. I went to school in Missoula and absolutely love this town and the people here, which makes my experience with the Hertz in Missoula really disappointing. I declined all coverages when I picked up my rental, yet a Loss Damage Waiver was still added. When I tried to dispute it at return, I was told only the manager, Chris, could handle it but he was off that day. However when I got in contact with the manager, he told me they were unable to process a refund now that the vehicle has been returned. On top of that, I was never given a copy of my rental agreement, only a return slip for mileage and fuel (even though I prepaid for a full tank). The lack of transparency and poor communication from the staff left me feeling misled and frustrated. I expected better from Hertz, especially in a town I love so much! read more

Overall we had a smooth in-terminal pickup/drop-off experience, and our SUV drove nicely, however, it appears that they don't clean their vehicles on a daily basis because ours was filthy inside when we got in. The floor mats and cup holders had dirt and crumbs on them. I had a car accident January 2 and my car was unusuable. I got an insurance rental while figuring out what to do. The people at the desk were rude and confused. I called to get rental set and that was the only good interaction. I use the car and it was a good car with heated steering wheel (which was super cool). The parking sensor wouldn't stop going off when going backwards the ENTIRE rental. When I returned the car, I asked them about it. The woman who accepted the return said the sensor was probably dirty. I reported a chip in the windshield the size of a sliver and went on my way. A few months later, I am charged $400 for a repair on the windshield. Whatever, I want this to go away so I can move on from my car being totaled and the horrible rental experience. Now we are in October. 8 months later. I get a repair bill for $1600. For this rental that I had 8 MONTHS AGO. With a repair dated May 9 that took them 4.5 days to do. 4, almost 5, months after I returned the car. I have a video of the car when I picked it up and pictures when I returned it with NO DAMAGE. DO NOT RENT FROM HERTZ. Kim the manager is a lying, cheating, dishonest scammer. I rented my car from Hertz and returned it with no garbage, no interior or exterior damage. I made sure I left it in the best condition I could cause I didn't even want to be charge even $1 for any damage. Imagine my surprise when I got billed $250 for cleaning. They claimed that there was an "odor" from the car, that it was SO BAD "it smelled like someone died in there" and that they had to get it professionally cleaned. They also said that there was garbage left in the trunk and that they took pictures to prove it for me. I know I did not return the car in that state and wanted to see the pictures of the trunk. I gave them 24 hours to send me the pictures. After waiting a day and getting nothing, I called and told them I wanted to pictures ASAP in case they decide to plant evidence against me but Kim LAUGHED and told me they will get the pictures to me when they can. Keep in mind, she ALREADY SAID she took pictures before I called and wont show it to me and that they are going "to take more pictures" after it comes back from the body shop. Shady manager. I am trying to prove that I did not return the car in the condition they claim and they want to hold onto the car longer to take more pictures when they already said they have pictures to begin with? They made it super convenient to charge me a damage I cannot prove (the odor) when I am not near town. And when I want to see the physical proof of the mess that I apparently left, she says "the charge is not actually from the mess but from the odor" and that "she will send the pictures after we send the car to the body shop and have it come back". DO NOT EVER RENT FROM HERTZ. THEY ARE SCAMMERS AND WILL ACCUSE YOU FOR FALSE DAMAGES. follow up: Kim sent the pictures and I LOVE how all the pictures are CLOSE UPS of the carpet. Like "get into the seams and cracks" close up. Like great great Kim, you found the dust or the bread crumb or the piece of hay we left behind. I mean a nothing a vacuum can't clean but it's OMG WHAT A MESS! Honestly if that's the best you can do and accusing me of leaving the car "dirty", I find it very hard to believe that the car "smelled so bad that it was like something died in it". SCAM: This location is charging people for damage upon car return when there is no damage. Total fraud. If this happens to you, you can start the complaint process from this website: dojmt.gov/consumer The scam works like this : return the car with no damage and 2 months later get a bill for damage that occurred after you turn in the keys. Also this location is not unlimited miles. They charge extra for miles over 75 a day. I plan on reporting this location for fraud and bad faith claims. I have warned all my Missoula business traveling and social media friends to not do business here. read more

Once again, a rental car agency can take a reservation but can't deliver the car. I know it has become cliché but it is an amazingly frustrating joke that these rental car agencies will take a reservation and not deliver a car. They've got you by the nuts and there's nothing you can do about it. They wouldn't even offer a discount on the smaller car we had to settle for...so we had ask, and then they argued with us over it. Apparently, the car we rented..."one is getting an oil change, one is getting the windshield fixed, and another customer kept their rental and hadn't turned it in yet". Nate was dismissive and uncooperative with a bit of an attitude, like "well, you KNOW we have a car shortage, so I can't do anything to help you". Do not rent from Hertz - Missoula!! They provided me a vehicle that had been previously turned in damaged, and could have resulted in a catastrophic failure as I was driving it. When the driveline did fail... thankfully at a low speed, Hertz charged me with towing, then $1500 for the repairs... PLUS another $500 for lost time on the rental due to the repair process! The damage to the vehicle was clearly old (no fresh metal scrapes), but they absolutely refuse to look at the evidence and take responsibility for providing me an unsafe vehicle. Additionally, the manager refused to take my phone calls and then sent me to collections. Since my Battalion team travels constantly to support National Guard and Reserve units as they prepare for deployment, I have been vocal in dissuading them from renting from Hertz. I also had a bad customer service experience with the Missoula airport Hertz. We forgot a parking pass in the rental car, and when I called to ask if they could check, I was completely talked down to and ignored. The person on the phone said that all cars are thoroughly cleaned and that if any item was left in the car, it would have been reported. I asked if they could double check by looking behind the mirror -- I had to shove the pass behind it because it didn't fit easily. I put it there on the first day and never moved it. His response was to tell me that they didn't need to check because their process is very thorough. I asked if they could please just check again. I described how the pass would not be easy to see. His response was to repeat that they have a thorough process. He then raised his voice and said, "I guarantee the pass in not in the car!" Every time I tried to ask a question, he simply repeated how thorough their process is and that he "guarantees" it isn't in the car. The more I tried to have a conversation, the more he escalated the situation until I finally quit and hung up. I will be complaining to both the corporate office and to AAA because we rented the car through them. read more

Very quick pick up and drop off - not quite the usual Gold experience of just walking straight to the car, but it is such a small airport, that is to be expected. The staff were very friendly (sorry I can't remember her name!), and after I dropped the car off at the end of my trip, they were so nice to call me to let me know that I'd left an item in the car. at least the people were friendly & the car was clean and in good condition. My issue is with the quoted price and the actual price. Evidently if you sign up for their "gold" status (free) you have to click on all the buttons to decline insurance and liability...and if you don't they won't even give you a quote. So you think you are paying one price with all the fees added, but you might actually be paying double. And of course there is not a thing they can do. Ridiculous. Do not prepay for gas unless you plan on using the entire tank. I prepaid, used less than a 1/4 of a tank and was charged for filling up the entire tank. Wasn't explained that way when renting it and sure was never that way with any other places I've rented from. I was lied to twice during my experience with Hertz Missoula. Both times I asked them to accommodate me appropriately for my replacement rental car through an insurance company that was paying for my rental because of a rear end accident. I live on a mountain dirt road and need 4 wheel drive in the wintertime to access my home. They lied to me first on the phone saying they didn't have 4 wheel drive vehicles, then when I inquired about the 30 4x4 vehicles in their lot they lied again in a scolding tone telling me they were all booked (they weren't, a friend tried booking one and they gave him many options for immediate pickup) when I asked them why they would lie to me they gave me the answer that it is policy to only rent out sedans for replacement vehicles. I asked them if they didn't see that it was probably moral and correct to tell the customer the truth, which they sheepishly agreed to, but never apologized! I will never be taking my business there again, and I'll be telling my friends and business associates to look elsewhere. read more

I rented a car with my hotel booking on Travelocity.com. This was the first and last time I will be using a third party website to do so. I could not figure out how to change the pickup time for the car rental, but being that I pre-paid for the car and the time was before my arrival, I figured it would be okay. I was wrong. I went to the counter to pick up my car and was told by Nicole that since my pickup time was over 3 hours ago, they gave my car away. I did not understand how they could give a pre-paid car away. Nicole then told me that they also did not have any cars available. I asked her what I was supposed to do, since I was there on business and needed a car. She told me to call the 1-800 number and tell them what happened. I asked her for some type of proof that they had given my car away so that I could at least get my money back. She insisted on blaming me for the entire situation and had nothing to give me to prove they gave the car away. I had to walk away before my temper got the better of me. When I returned to the counter after picking up my baggage, a different young lady was there. Kayla had clearly been informed about the situation and was already on the computer trying to make something work. I explained that I would have understood them giving my car away had I only made a reservation, but since I had already paid for it, I expected it to be there even as late as I was. Also, there is nothing on the website warning you that they will give your car away after 3 hours of pick up time. Kayla ended up finding another car that I could use. Nicole rudely interjected that Kayla shouldn't screw over someone else because of my mistake. I was very offended because I never implied they should do this. As much as Nicole insisted everything was my fault, it only lead me to believe that she was the one who gave my car away and was being defensive about it. I would just like to know what would happen if my flight had been delayed due to weather? There are legit reasons for being late or making mistakes during the rental process. I am just so thankful that Kayla was there to work things out. Kayla explained they have time between rentals to clean the cars and that she could clean a car herself to make it work. I ended up with a nice, clean car for my entire rental agreement. Nicole needs to learn not only some manners, but basic customer service. Kayla clearly cared and went above and beyond to make things right. Had Kayla not been there, I would never be renting from Hertz again. Thank you again Kayla! read more

This is the worst place to rent a car. I don't know if they are physically incapable of picking up the phone or if they just don't want to. I had to rent from them due to an agreement with my insurance company and them but the first time I waited it was 45 minutes until they got the information in their system, never mind that I had a confirmation number then when I returned the car they said that I wasn't authorized to be in it for 12 days. I asked if they picked up the phone an called the insurance company, Nate said they did not, it was not in their system though so they charged me! Next I get a call saying there is a reservation in their system for the 26th and what day would I like to pick up the car? Really? The 26th! After speaking with Nate he advised me that I was told that I was only authorized for 5 days and that the rest of the rental was on me and it was my responsibility to get a refund from the insurance company for them not calling!
