Im not sure how successful folks are with catching fish in this large pond, but sitting by the dock…read moreis very peaceful. The lake is centered around the shopping mall so there are a few restaurant that overlook the lake. There are also ducks that live there.

Came here today with fishing friend who did some actual fishing. Nothing was caught (fish 1 -…read morehumans 0), but it was really OK, and I thoroughly enjoyed sitting in my camping chair and watching the fish jump in the air and the world passing by. A few other people were down on the dock casting for fish, others sat on the various rock formations sort of zoning out, and it was a real pleasure to see the children and parents sharing something they really loved. If the youngsters aren't interested in the fishing, they can come down and feed the ducks - such fun. The water is so clear you can see down to rocks and plants on the bottom and also nearest the dock flashes of the goldfish as they glide along (these goldfish eventually grow into some very large carp). There are evidently some sturgeon as well along with the rainbow trout, and also lots of ducks and other water birds (a few still with babies). Oh yes, lots of dragonflies - flashes of black and fiery orange red - add to the charm. People who fish welcome you right into their society and talk readily about their fishing experiences and how the big one got away and even why. This is a terrific family experience and for those who want to come out alone. The best time is to come early, before 7, and especially after the lake has been re-stocked, if you want to catch some fish. But like I said, it's a wonderful experience whether fish are caught or not. Give it a try. And remember if you don't catch any fish, you can hike back up to the shopping center above and get some breakfast. Not a bad day at all, in fact a damn fine one if you ask me.

They let me know that the canoe had been hand-crafted by a dad that didn't have any family that wanted to canoe and so he donated it. Great people. They have maps of the Tualatin in brochure form but also on their beautiful website online. Highly recommend!

I was in a pool swimming before I could walk and have a life long love affair with water in its many forms. Most of my favorite memories involve water. Taking a hike then frolicking in the cool waters of a lake in the High Sierras, or sitting at night with my toes in the sand listening to waves crash on an ocean beach. I love a city view, but there is something about looking out across the water that does it for me. I don't think I could ever live in a landlocked region. Just this week I was driving downtown to meet some friends and took I-5 over the Marquam Bridge through downtown. It was 5:30p and it was just getting dark and I get practically teary taking in the view. The same view I've seen thousands of times. So that brings me to this wonderful organization whose mission is to protect and restore the Tualatin River system. Now I have a personal stake here since I live on the Tualatin River, so I feel personally responsible to be one of its caretakers. Our family has a canoe and kayaks and we get out on the many local rivers when we can. In fact, part of the fun is usually collecting trash from the river. What will we find this time? The photo was taken earlier this year when my husband and son took the canoe out. He calls me from the river and asks me to meet him on the bank with garbage bags, gloves and a camera. Now, I watch the Sopranos, so I was a little concerned. No need to worry, it was just a giant haul of stuff that day. So for all of you that love our rivers so, considered getting involved. You can donate your money, time (river clean up) or take one of their paddle trips.

I took the Ridgefield Bachelor Island Circumnavigation Class…read more Overall, I would really give it 4/5 stars, but here I gave it 5 stars because I felt the 4 was really too subjective and I did not have enough objectivity to my reasoning. It was really a personal preference, as stated below. The instructor/guide, Peggy, was great! She was knowledgeable, helpful, funny, and catered the class to us (all 2 of us! well, 3 if you count my service dog!) What I got out of it? I got a lot of practice on my paddling. Peggy was great in making me learn my body the whats and whys of what I was doing wrong, which, is a much better way of learning than just being told. She guided me to the answer, but I still had to figure it out, which I did, and I now am more able to correct my own errors. Whenever there is a disabled person is a class, and one with a service dog, it can stress others out. Peggy handled it like a pro - as if she dealt with this all the time (and I know she doesn't!) It was welcoming and comforting to know how well we were going to be taken care of. So why did I give it 4 stars and not 5? Completely, 100%, subjective opinion. Boring. This is not a route I would take on my own, nor would I take the class again, mainly because there isn't a whole lot to see. For working on kayaking skills it's a 5/5. Making it an exciting adventure, a 4/5. This has nothing to do with the instructor (she did a great job, and I learned about the island, about wire dams, etc). It's more that it is just not something I would want to repeat. Would I recommend it? Yes! it is a great class after the beginner skills class, because you really have to work on all of the skills. Overall, Alder Creek has been great to work with and I can't wait for my next class (in 2 weeks!)
