A few months ago when I was walking towards Max Weber Platz I stumbled upon this little…read morehole-in-the-wall. I was a bit confused to be honest. I remember saying to myself "Wait a second, is this a bar? It CAN'T be!" Well let me tell you, it is not just a bar, and the owner/bartender (I believe named Emmanuel) does not make "drinks". I honestly felt privelaged to watch him create his heavenly mixtures. That alone is worth the money you pay. He is an "old school 1920's gent" all the way, and it's so cool to see such a throwback style of bartending that has been lost in the flurry of trendy bars in this city. Also, the decor of Barroom is decked out in a 1920's chic style with soft music playing in the background to match! The whole experience just comes together indescribably well. I remember I didn't go in the first few times I walked by Barroom, because it is so small (two small tables, one even smaller corner "table" and a bit of standing room by the bar) and I thought I would look strange going in alone. However, I was beyond excited when my flatmate told me that she used to work there and she is friends with the owner. "We're going on an adventure!!!", and an adventure into the senses it was. I tried the Munich Mule and after one sip it became my new favorite drink. I think it will be a while before another drink de-thrones it. Try anything here with gin in it and I promise you won't be disappointed! If you are, you are either a) a negative nancy or b) you don't have taste buds or c) you don't like gin (fair enough haha). They didn't have an english menu (spiesekarte), but they offered to translate all the items. When we ordered they also provided the wine that would go best with our meal - they give the whole bottle, but only require you to pay for what you actually drink. I ate the calamari and seafood linguine, which I thoroughly enjoyed - this is better than any Italian that I ate in the US. What was even better was the service - although they didn't take credit cards, no one rushed us to pay and leave once our meal was finished. I saw people sitting outside enjoying their meal with their conversations and people eating solo while reading a book. It's such a nice place to relax with great food.

For some reason, I thought it was very difficult to find, but it was so easy to take the 19 tram through the heart of town to Maxmonument. Then it is just a couple blocks down Thierschstrasse and right on Mariannenstrasse. Look for the blue sign. No reservations. Cash only. Communal seating. Expect to share a table. It is a funky place primarily filled with 20 and 30-somethings crowded around the bar and small tables. Many are pushed together for larger groups, having lively conversations in the dark space lit by white candles. I think the room is painted gold, but it is hard to tell. The artwork painted on the walls throughout the space is... interesting. A severed finger writing "help" and an ear that is a mouth. It could keep you scratching your head for days. They don't have an English menu, although in another funny twist, many food and beverage items have English names and German descriptions. My remedial German was aided by the waitress, who was the best I've had in Munich this trip. My "Inferno" salad (grilled turkey, roasted potatoes, zucchini, carrots, bell peppers, peanuts and olives) was excellen,t and despite the name, only mild + on my personal spice scale. I also enjoyed a non-traditional "Old Fashioned." For visitors looking for an alternative to the hundreds of sausage and beer focused restaurants in town, this is a great place to try. For me, it is all about the salads and cocktails here. Do yourself a favor and skip the tram on your way back to town. Stroll along Maximillianstrasse (Munich's version of Rodeo Drive) and be blown away by the oppulence and extravagance of the retail elite. Even the streetlights are dripping in crystals.

They politely told me in broken english that was not possible so I knew we would be in for an authentic german meal at suppertime. Our party of 9 had a fabulous time. The beer was great, the food was great, the service was great. The band played what I think was german punk during Octoberfest. None of the staff spoke fluent english but that was not a problem. There were a couple of dogs (golden or lab retrievers) roaming around that were just part of the restaurant.. I don't think they get alot of americans so the owner (I think) came over to visit a while. We probably spend 4 hours dining and beer drinking. I absolutely plan on visiting again next time I go to Octoberfest.

Thinking it was some sort of pharmacy or doctor's office, it is more of a bar than a restaurant. It has seating outside and inside. As you go in, you will see the gentlemen working behind the counters, wearing white lab coats like doctors. The staff are super friendly and comical. They offer you nuts to eat, water, and recommendations from their menu. The bar's decor inside is very nice. They have a huge painting on the wall of the bar. We all ordered only beers, as we wanted to wine down a little bit and take a breather from so much walking. And we also used their restrooms which are clean. After, they were so kind as to help us when we asked for directions to our next stop. I definitely recommend this nice bar the next time you are in the area. It is kind of hidden but you can't miss it with their name. I really want to go back and try one of their liquors.
