My boyfriend taught me last year when we were on holiday in Vietnam, and eventually after playing everyday for a month I got pretty good. But a few weeks without practice and I was back to my fairly low standard of ability. Knights and Bytes is where you should take your kid if you don't want them to turn out like me. Or, y'know if they show an interest in chess. Although they sell chess boards (and also set up databases online for businesses), their main game seems to be teaching chess classes, both in schools and at their shopfront on Port Rd. There is classes for adults and kids, and they are pretty damn cheap. On Saturday mornings you can do a class for just ten bucks! Ten bucks, young padawan/grasshopper/amateur chess expert. You can also get private classes for fourty bucks if you're a real nerd.

This means the yearly fee for all students is $555, instead of the thousands you would be obliged to pay to attend any other all girls school in the state. I found the curriculum followed and level of support generally to be of a high standard. These factors, were of course, as I am sure they are in all schools dependant on the teachers taking the classes. Some clearly appealed to my style of learning more than others. The school day runs from 8:40 am to 3:15 pm. I found the sporting and extra-curricular areas especially rewarding. There are also several opportunities provided by the school to do a small amount of travel, on organised camps and excursions. The facilities were generally very good with a large gymnasium, large open greenspace, shaded quadrangle and even a swimming pool on the campus. There is a small tuck shop and all but final year students are not allowed to go off campus during the school day.

An all-girls environment does not work for all people, but it did for me. I feel confident with myself and transitioning into uni and Tafe in a couple of years. It's a great local campus with public transport, plenty of cheap parking, food facilities and easy going small classes. The setting is beautiful, with lots of grass, open space, trees, bridges, park benches and a creek that runs pretty heavy after rain in the hills. I went here for 3 years and the time was good and I learnt a lot. The teachers were ok, not the best, but you always get the good and the bad. If you are lucky enough to be able to complete your whole Uni degree away from the city, then make the most of it. It saves you lots of time, travel, money, effort, stair walking and busy campuses.

I used to be a student here back in 2000 and I used to bitch and moan about how boring it was. After attending Flinders and working around the corner from Magill Uni for the last year however, I've realised that it's actually a beautiful campus and the main problem with it was my stinking attitude! Magill students have a local, the Tower Hotel, just up the road, as well as some really good and cheap food places just up on Magill Road. The 106 bus goes straight from the city to uni pretty much constantly and there's heaps of parking (unlike other University's) so they don't have to worry about transport, and it's a beautiful campus! The gardens are immaculate and the buildings are a mixture of beautiful historic and totally up to date modern. It's a sweet Uni! And I bet all you nature loving kids just can't get enough of that creek.

We have seen his confidence and his love for learning grow year by year and we put this down to the holistic and nurturing approach to education. They do have a male music and a male PE teacher. I pulled my child out of this school last year when I was told that it's the parents job to teach the times tables. Since putting my child into an independent school It's clear she's lacking basic educational skills. It's these basics that are being neglected in favour of promoting social agendas. While some social agendas may be important, this school does not have the balance right. To clarify my child was in mainstream not the Steiner program they run. On the plus side the school does have beautiful grounds and the children that attend are good natured and well mannered.
