A magnet for hi-fi buffs, my recent experiences with Richer Sounds come mainly through looking for…read morean LCD TV, a type of product notoriously awkward to buy as there are so many deals going about both in shops and on the internet, that it can be difficult to know where to start. The staff here are very helpful and don't give you the hard-sell bollocks that makes going into some other electronics retailers a stressful and often awkward experience. Their special offers are very good and new ones come up all the time, so it's worth checking back regularly. It's not unusual to find a £1000 Sony TV here for little over half price. Unfortunately for poor old Mr Richer, I found a deal on Amazon that just edged out what was on offer here, but I'd still recommend the place, and would make it first stop on my next quest for high-end consumer electronics.

My last experience in here was in purchasing some speakers and an amp for my beleaguered old stereo system. It was great to be able to actually ask some question and not be met with a blank stare of utter confusion by the staff. The only real problem with this place is that its so popular with those in the know that it can become very busy at times, however its worth the hassle. Anyway, great service, fantastic offers and a welcome tonic to the sterile nature of some of the big electronic stores.

I had a terrible experience. It wasn't the store's fault. I bought a Bosch dryer, and the delivery…read moredriver left it broken. They left so fast I didn't have time to catch them. I called, and they told me to call the store. I don't understand why they would leave me with a broken dryer. They removed the protective seal, and I could see it was broken. I've had to go to the store several times to get a refund. They did give me one, but now I have to find another store to buy from. This is causing me a lot of unnecessary stress.

I was SCAMMED at Currys Store in Edinburgh…read more I visited the Currys store in Edinburgh to buy an iPhone on January 20th. When I swiped my card, a charge of 963.99 GBP was deducted from my account, but it remained pending for confirmation. The salesperson explained that this pending status occurs when the amount is pre-approved but will be refunded later, so he couldn't complete the purchase at that time. I was given a deadline until Thursday (25/1) for the refund to be processed, but it's been a week and I haven't received any reimbursement yet. I tried to contact them through the website, but I was informed that I should go to the physical store, which is impossible since I live in Malta. Additionally, there is no phone number or email available to contact the Edinburgh store directly. The Currys staff member at the physical store also told me that I could resolve the issue online, but it seems that this information is not true. In summary, I ended up buying the iPhone again with another card and essentially paid double the amount, as the money from the first transaction was not refunded. The manager's name is Eric and the salesperson's name is Craig.

They used to be more of an Argos-style store with catalogue ordering and take-your-form-to-the-counter service, but some years ago they began opening larger stores with a great selection of budget consumer electronics on display. They're great if you're looking for extension cords, phones and accessories, computer bits and bobs, and obscure branded electronic thingamibobs. They're especially good around Xmas as they always have some bizarre electronic toy that's just perfect for your 8-year-old nephew or the other geek in your life. Sometimes they don't have the item you want in store (as happened to me today), but they're more than happy to order it up for you and it will be delivered to your home at no extra charge. I do find them a bit overpowering sometimes as they always seem to have a surfeit of staff who hover around you asking if they can assist every couple of minutes, which wears thin very quickly with me, especially as this is the kind of shop I like to circumambulate several times whilst waiting for inspiration to strike if I've got a particular project in mind but I'm not sure what I need (which is most of the time when I'm in here!)

From buying CDs for burning, to rewiring my speakers, they've been kind enough to share their know-how all over the shop (literally). You can get everything you want electronically here - even from batteries to welders, and when you can't find it - guess who'll come to the rescue? That's right, the maplin employees! Everyone loves a Maplin Employee...

It's not cheap here, what you are buying is top end goods, so of course it won't be cheap. When you've decided what it is you want you entertainment system to achieve and how much it is you want to spend on it head here and tell the staff what it is you want (unless you know your stuff of course) and they should be able to help you out. A visit to both here and Bang & Olufsen should get you what you want at a competitive price.

Oh my, oh my, it's Hi-Fi porn in here. There's a turntable in the window (I'm into vinyl, music…read moresnob and all that), which is on a perspex base and it looks incredible. Irrespective of the sound quality, I want it. I can't afford it, but there's no harm in dreaming. This is, as the others have said, high end stuff in here. But when it comes to quality hi-fi equipment, you really do get what you pay for. Being that type of store, the staff are extremely knowledgeable and only too happy to help, even if they quickly realise you're a poor student without a hope of affording anything in there. If you are like me, in crushing penury, then it's a little torturous going in here, because you will want to possess everything. If you're not on a budget, though, this should be your first stop for high-end goods.
