After over a decade with the same primary care doctor, I found myself needing to make a change. My previous doctor's office had grown so much that things started slipping through the cracks, and the level of personal, consistent care I once received just wasn't there anymore. I recently had my first visit with Dr. Frederick at Hibiscus Medical, and I'm so glad I made the switch. She came highly recommended from a local DC group I'm part of, and from the moment I walked in, I could tell this office was something special. It's beautifully designed--calm, clean, and thoughtfully put together--with the kind of atmosphere that immediately puts you at ease. Her staff was friendly, welcoming, and organized, and everything ran smoothly from the moment I arrived. Dr. Frederick was warm, attentive, and truly took the time to listen. I could immediately tell she really cares about her patients' well-being and brings a wealth of knowledge to her care. Parking was surprisingly easy, which is almost unheard of in DC. I decided to try this out in hopes of finding a pcp not beholden to their corporate overlords and financial stakeholders but ultimately was disappointed and won't be returning. Unfortunately I must echo other reviewers here- nice aesthetics but disorganized front staff, distant provider who provided essentially no services and instructed me to return for my concerns. No labs on site, no seasonal vaccines on site which makes getting the things that are most valuable to me as a healthy young person getting a physical an unnecessary challenge. I would not recommend. The lady at the front Ms. Debb was very rude. I arrived 15 minutes late to my appointment due to a personal emergency and instead of saying "I'm sorry we cannot see you today, would you like to reschedule" her comment was "you'll have to reschedule, you should've called if you'd be late" and very rude from that point forward. I asked why they didn't call me and she said not our responsibility you should've been on time. Not even knowing what transpired or asking why I was late. Just not very personal or inviting. I don't think I could ever trust a doctors office like that with my health. As a black woman myself, I hate to have to be negative about a black business. But I swear we ruin it for ourselves everytime. Definitely will not be retuning. read more

This review is based on my first 2 visits back in July 2025, so I don't know if staffing has changed or improved in the meantime. The office / waiting room is beautiful and calming.. feels like what you'd expect from a massage therapist or yoga instructor, so a very nice first impression. I liked the doctor and experienced her as warm, thorough and a good listener. There didn't seem to be very many patients in the practice yet, so I don't know if her attentiveness will start tanking as her patient caseload increases. Some other reviewers described her as distant and removed, but I didn't personally experience that. The main negative that stood out for me was the front desk person. It's hard to describe her vibe.. she was nice enough, but she seemed like she was maybe trying too hard (making unnecessary conversation with me when I just wanted to get my exam and go) and/or was very new so still learning the system and not very good at hiding that. She talked out loud to herself through each task as she was doing it.. like, "Ok, so, new patient.. I gave her the paperwork.. now I need to check with the doctor.." There was a clunky awkwardness that felt different from other doctor's offices where front desk staff is typically very efficient and competent. Then, once the doctor was ready, the receptionist was the one who weighed me, took my blood pressure, and then did the blood draw later in the appointment, so I guess she's both the receptionist and nurse / phlebotomist? It was hard to relax with her because no one wants to be at the hands of a clunky, awkward medical professional using a device to squeeze the artery in your arm and sticking a needle in you to draw blood. Maybe she's newly licensed..? It was a little unsettling, but maybe she's more comfortable and efficient now. Regardless, my negative impression of front office / nursing staff isn't enough to keep me from going back. It'll depend on how my next appointment goes, and I'll try to remember to post another review of that experience. read more

What initially drew me to Hibiscus Medical was the beautiful, welcoming space and the overwhelmingly positive reviews about Dr. Fredericka Lee. I was genuinely excited to become a patient here. Dr. Lee has been great towards me as a provider However, my experience with the staff has been disappointing and doesn't align with the standard I expected from an internal medicine practice. While the staff are professional in demeanor, they often appear disorganized, inattentive, and lacking the efficiency and responsiveness essential in a medical setting. As someone with firsthand experience working in a medical facility, I can say that the level of service here feels far below what is acceptable. It's also disheartening to see services offered that the office can't reliably provide--this lack of follow-through is frustrating and, frankly, inexcusable in a healthcare environment. For these reasons, I will likely begin the search for a new physician immediately. read more

1 star for a nice looking office. I visited on Jul 3rd for an annual physical and blood test. As some of the other recviewers have said, Dr. Frederick's bedside manner is distant and leaves a lot to be desired. During the physical, she never asked about any concerns I have. Outside of using her stethoscope to listen to my lungs and heart, she didn't feel for any lumps, etc. She did ask about family history. The biggest issue was that I was never informed about the blood test results even though I got a notification from LabCorps that it was finished on July 10th. When I reached out on July 14th to ask about issuing a prescription for a low vitamin, Dr. Frederick's assistant sent the following message: "The Dr, will be sending the results with her notes within 1 to 2 weeks of the labs taken." Its now been 18 days with no contact from the office. I can't believe that this kind of unprofessional customer service exists in 2025. I would advise all existing and future patients to leave this practice. read more

Warning: Patient Experience with Dr. Debralee Frederick at Hibiscus Medical (Washington, DC) This is the first time I've written a negative review, but I believe it's important to share my experience with Dr. Debralee Frederick so others can make an informed decision. I scheduled a routine physical based on a personal recommendation, and arrived having fasted in preparation for labs, as instructed -- a challenge as a breastfeeding mother. From the start, I found Dr. Frederick's bedside manner distant. I asked a routine question about a test I'd received at previous practices and was told, without further explanation, that it had "no purpose." When I calmly expressed discomfort with the tone of the interaction, the visit ended abruptly. Dr. Frederick stood up and walked out of the room. I was told to have my labs done elsewhere, despite the fact that this had been the primary reason for my appointment. Although the appointment was cut short and labs were not performed, my insurance was still billed. My husband and I followed up the next day to express concern and note our intent to file a complaint with the DC Board of Medicine. In response, I received a message through the patient portal that referenced "harassment" and "coercion" -- language I felt mischaracterized the situation. My access to the portal was then revoked. Others may have had different experiences, but I personally would not return to this practice. When I moved to the DC area, I didn't have a primary care doctor, and Dr. Frederick easily filled that role. She's so personable, and you can tell she truly cares about her patients. Along with this, the fact that it is a family business makes it even more appealing. I have been there for about 2 years now, and I will continue going as long as I live in the area! Nice office and sweet desk assistant ( Dr. Debralee's mother). Unfortunately, no one answers the phone when calling which can cause issues if it's an emergency or to update them with information. Waited over 45 minutes to be seen from scheduled appointment time. However, things happen... so I was not upset on that. When seen, Dr. Debralee appeared overwhelmed and emotional, which I get because her job is stressful but it made me feel a little uneasy. The issue that I have with the practice is the professionalism. On a separate occasion there was a mishap with duplicate scheduling from the online scheduling system. I was informed that I would be charged a fee for no show when I never scheduled an online appointment ( I called to make an appointment). Please note ... when I called no one answered but i was later called back. Fast forward, As I tried to call multiple times , to receive clarity on the "no show", the phone would ring and go to voicemail. After a few times I noticed communication was then sent via text, so I responded and informed them there may be a mix up or misunderstanding. After I sent over the text, I was then sent a message from Dr. Debralee accusing me of making the appointment via online and became very accusatory and unprofessional with me. Even though they stated it was a reminder and they would forgive the fee this time , I still wanted it to be known that I never booked online. Just maybe there could be a disconnect somewhere. This is why I wanted to speak on the phone, but instead Dr. Debralee did not answer. I didn't like the way she made me feel or not heard, which made me realize I do not want this person being trusted with my health. I'm leaving this comment because there are many of the same experiences on other rating platforms and if I would have known, I would not have wasted her time nor mine. What an amazing office! Dr. Frederick and her team have created such a clean and relaxing space, it feels more like a day spa than a doctors office.
