Dr. Mitchell treated me for several years out of an Alexandria, VA location... until she ghosted me and my spouse many years ago (pre-pandemic). Until that time she was thorough and professional. But she mostly worked on her own without staff so scheduling was challenging even before she ghosted us. It was surprising. We got along well. Or so I thought. Never had issues with billing. So 5 stars for the care she did give but 1 star for the sheer lack of professionalism and communication at the end for an overall score of 3. Never had a worse more negligent experience with a doctor. I came to see her after a fainting episode which has now been diagnosed as a form of seizures. This office is not prepared to take on patients, no real office assistant to take calls. An ultrasound referral took 2 weeks and that's with multiple call backs. Once I took my test 8 weeks went by and dr Mitchell never reached out to me. It was then when I had another medical event and had to reach out again 12 straight phone calls just to have her transfer my documents. I feel like the negative reviews are from people that are likely uptight, arrogant and pretentious in real life. The claims of her committing fraud are absurd and are microaggressions steeped in blatant racism; would these same people even question her billing if she were a white doctor? Anyway, I have been a patient for over 15 years and while getting a hold of her recently has been difficult, she has also lost her husband and her mother recently and that would impact anyone. My entire family attends Doctor Mitchell - sister, ex husband, myself and even sometimes she will see my son. There have been times when he was a baby and I could not get in with the pediatrician, she would see him on short notice. I LOVE Dr. M and even I have taken my new boyfriend to see her. I love that she cares. So when I turned 30, 14 years ago, I was running 7 miles a day and eating a vegan diet but I suddenly gained 30 pounds in one moth. I researched and knew it was my thyroid. Dr. M sent me to 3 endo docs and all three were A holes and one ASSumed that because I was black, I had a bad diet. Anyway, I went back to her and said, I refuse to see another ENDO. We will treat this together and since then, she has listened to me, taken by thoughts into consideration and even have listened to my suggestions for alternative treatments; she's old school and I love it! The person that said they were dropped as a patient by her, I know for a fact she would never drop a patient unless they were extremely difficult to deal with and If i had to guess, they were dropped for calling her integrity into play - she has integrity and to have it called into question is deeply offensive. So far so good. It's so hard to find a good PCP these days and my first impression with her office in silver spring was great! Waiting room is little and cozy. I don't know if she doesn't have a receptionist or her receptionist wasn't in today but I didn't see anyone and she was doing all the clerical work on her own while seeing patients. She listened to my concerns and complaint. I felt like she cared about what I had to say and followed up on all my concerns. I went in for a visit and was appalled when her nurse, whose name I didn't get, went on a homophobic rant in front of me and my fiancée. I have never encountered such unprofessionalism in a medical setting, and hope to never do so again. No doctor worth her salt would employ someone who was no abrasive and unprofessional. I've been a patient of Dr. Mitchell's for about 10 years now. In reading all of the reviews I understand both sides. If you're looking for an intelligent, caring and capable doctor...Dr. Mitchell is for you. There is, however, a small drawback. The office doesn't have designated administrative staff to help her out so she is the doctor, receptionist and office manager. I will be her patient until she no longer practices medicine, but I am patient and know/understand what's most important to me. I value her time, knowledge and attention over all else. I do wish she would hire some help around there sometimes, but I sacrifice that for her care :-) My children are 17 and when they become adults, I will recommend that see her as well. read more

Although I didn't get the chance to actually experience Dr Mitchell, I called to register as a new patient and they had me email my info to a Hotmail email account. I thought it was a joke, but that's apparently how they do business. I didn't hear from them for a few days, so I called and they told me they didn't take my insurance, despite saying earlier that they would. Unfortunately I did not have the opportunity to meet with this Dr. I called and asked where they accepting new patients she says yes. I fill out all the paper work ( insurance info, waivers, personal info, medical history) and send it back over to her via email. She informs me that they will check my insurance & reach back out to me to make an appointment. I have blue cross blue shield. A few days go by I haven't heard anything. I give her a call & there is no answer. I give them another call this time she picks up and says that I'm not sure if we go to you yet we are busy we will have to call you back & rushes me off the phone. It should not take you 2 weeks to verify that I have insurance because I clearly do . FYI they still never called back. So I found a new primary doctor. read more

Extremely confused with why she has so many good reviews....I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt in terms of wait times/hearing back because she does not have a front desk person so she does everything herself, but in my experience, she has been extremely condescending and uninformative if you have any questions. She gets easily defensive and becomes extremely rude if you have any questions about your bill and will give you no explanation of seemingly false charges if you ask for more clarification, which in my case, resulted me in having to file a complaint/investigation against her with the insurance company. I was really hoping to find a new good caring doctor, since my last doctor isn't able to take my company's new health insurance, and so I was very excited to meet her after seeing her reviews. Unfortunately I was met with condescension and a feeling of being taking advantage of as a patient. I've never experienced something this negative with a doctor ever before. UPDATE: Got a letter saying she was dropping me as a patient after I contacted insurance to clarify what the charges were for....in the middle of a pandemic. Not that I was ever planning to go back after the nightmare of the first appointment experience, but quite unprofessional of her. And although insurance was able to give me the code descriptions for the charges, we still don't know why the charges were given since the doctor would not explain them. One of the strangest experiences attempting to see a doctor in recent memory. Dr Mitchell claims to have an office manager and staff over the phone, but clearly does not. After I had to return my own calls 3x I arrived for my appointment to find a notecard taped to the door saying Dr Mitchell was out of the office. DO NOT GO HERE! SHE WILL FRAUDULENTLY CHARGE YOU!!!! For starters I did not personally visit Brenda Mitchell I made the appointment on behalf of my father as a new patient. BTW she answers her phone so this rude person you mention in your reviews it's the doctor herself! We specifically scheduled the appointment as a preventive service (free by law). Also when making the appointment I had to call back twice to finally get one. After checking in with my father on his visit he tells me he paid $150 because he has a deductible. This makes me furious I am more than familiar with health insurance and the new healthcare reform laws, this is a fraudulent charge. I was more than certain she did not code it as a preventive service and felt entitled to charge $150 towards his deductible. I called her office and asked to know why was he charged and if she would be correcting the coding, her response was to get snippy and tell me it was not a preventive service. I then let her know either she corrects it and refunds the full amount or I file an appeal with insurance and the state. I guess that must have caught her off-guard she said she would not speak to me without my father on the phone. We called her back and she starts ranting and complaining about my call to her. She then goes on to say she will issue a full refund and refer him to another doctor because she could not deal with me. Lady seriously? If you did nothing wrong would you not laugh at me for accusing you of fraudulent coding? End of the story, scheduling is a hassle. She is rude and she will FRAUDULENTLY charge you just because you don't know any better. Good riddance to her. read more

I have a Myriad of health problems and moved to Maryland from Cincinnati in 2013. I initially chose Dr. Mitchell based on proximity to my home however, I would go out of my way to retain Dr. Mitchell as my Primary care physician. She has diagnosed problems that I have had all my life that other Doctors (including specialists) were unable to diagnose throughout my 56 years here on earth. If she doesn't have the means to treat my problem, she has referred me to specialists that were able to see to it that my physical needs were taken care of in every instance. She has gone out of her way to see me in her office on very short notice. I'm hesitant to share this review simply because I am concerned that too much business might impede the progress that I have made via Dr. Mitchell. Dr. Mitchell is compassionate, smart, and thorough! She is indeed old-school, as other reviewers have mentioned. She doesn't have a lot of staff, and often is the one answering the phone. The down side, that some people experienced, is a bit of disorganization or wait time for new patients. The up side - once you're a patient, she is extremely responsive, especially via email. She routinely answers my emails within an hour or two. Amazing to be able to have a back and forth with my dr - like I've never experienced before! When I am sick she almost always sees me that same day, and she calls in prescriptions/emails lab results promptly. And - most importantly of all, she's very smart. I trust her! read more

I called to schedule an appointment and the lady seemed very annoyed over the phone. I told her I was a new patient and she automatically says " oh well then we can't take you" I asked why and she said we only accept new patients with a certain insurance. I said okay...what insurance? Turns out I have the "only" insurance they accept new patients with. I gave her my info and she said someone would contact me to schedule it. I was refered to Dr. Mitchell by another patient who had good recommendation of her, and when I first called to set a appointment with her : I was in shock because she answers the call, and I wss thrown off because I was nit use to the Doctor answering the call. She informed me she was a private pratice. Okay I remember why I did nit set the first apptoinment because she ask me about my insurance and talked about me about the health insurance and took my information down and she will call me back to see if they accept my insurance, and she fid call back to tell me I had to pay $150 from my deductable. I was like I do not understand her process because I don't have to pay no $150, so I was like let me call my insurance and have one of the member service speak with her, but then when I told them what happen, they informed me she was wrong for asking that, when I insurance card said what I am to pay. So i decided not to call her back, until I spoke with my friend and decided to give a chance and call back. She did the same thing, took my information and said someone would contact me. No one never did, so I called back and got her again. So she took my information, i set an appointment. Then the following week I called her a day before my appointment to reschedule, she was okay and set the appointment for the following week. Why the next day I get this rude phone call from a man that was her husband. He ask for me, and I said this is she. He goes to say; you have a appountment today and you did a no show. The goes to say you need to contact your memeber service and request for another doctor. I was confused and piss, because this person called me being rude and unprofessional. Then I say there is some confusion because i spoke to a female yesterday and she gave me a new date and reshedule without any problems, then he cuts me off and say that will be Dr. Mitchell and that this was my second time rescheduling and I miss my appoinment and I did a no show. Horrible customer service! Like other reviews, I never had a chance to meet Dr. Mitchell due to challenges trying to make an appointment. I had phoned and a spoke w/a very polite and professional woman who advised there were open appointments available that week. She confirmed the office accepted my insurance and asked for an email address. She then advised the Office Manager would email me paperwork to complete, after which, the Office Manager would then work with me to schedule an appointment. She had advised the Office Manager would email me that afternoon. 3-weeks later, I have yet to receive any email or phone call. Needless to say I made an appointment elsewhere. This is hardly an efficient system not to mention the lack of follow-up and inadequate customer service. They could have scheduled my appointment on the first call. Absolutely the worst doctors office I have ever been to. The staff are rude on the phone and I had to call them back three times after they said they would call me. I was very clear that I was a new patient and even had to call for directions and they didn't once mention that parking was by meters. She's always informed me of options, has always been extremely clear on explanations, prompt, responsive, and an excellence listener. I love Dr. Mitchell!!! She has been my doctor for several years and I cannot say enough wonderful things about her. She is attentive, is personally invested in your care and very thorough. I'm surprised at the negative comments but I would not let that dissuade you as none of them are people who actually visited her or related to her care as a physician (rather they are administrative issues). I have never had a problem making an appointment with her. I either call or email her and she is very accommodating. Visited Dr. Mitchell for the first time for a physical exam. I know other reviewers have had difficulty getting the appointment. At first, I had a similar experience but I followed up with a phone call the next day and I was able to get an appointment for a date and time that was convenient for me and not in the too distant future (bonus). The exam was very thorough and she cared about my concerns. When I inquired about my labs the next week, received a prompt response via email and phone. Dr. Mitchell has been my GP for over 5 years now. She is the best doctor I have ever had. I moved 50 minutes away and I still drive to Silver Spring to see her. She always spends a lot of time with her patients, she never rushes you. She allows you time to ask questions and she provides you with information, she is extremely through. She follows up with results very quickly. I feel like she really gets to know her patients, she feels like family to me. read more
