April 15, 2026 - A hidden gem and fascinating park we discovered recently since we moved here in 2023. It has been an incredibly fun adventure for us - finding parks and places to enjoy, hike, and immerse ourselves in the nature, beauty of the outdoors, and wildlife in Virginia & Maryland. We walked all the trails in the Hidden Pond Park and liked spending time in the Hidden Pond Nature Center in the park. There are many activities for children and adults in the parks. The staff there were friendly and helpful. The park is well maintained and there are so many picturesque areas and hiking trails to experience there. We spent about three hours in the park. The park was peaceful and quiet. We experienced no traffic and saw very few people during our hike on the trails. Austin, one of the staff in the Nature Center, said it had to do with the geography & location of the park. Along the trails are many sitting areas to take a break. We saw many kinds of birds, deer, flowers, and foxes during our time in the park. Strongly recommend wearing bug repellent & sunscreen and checking out a map of the trails in the nature center. Beautiful park to visit during each season and very ideal for wildlife photographers and for peaceful & quiet walks in the park. read more

What did we see on our first day walking the trails? -Red fox, 3 deer, red shouldered hawk, cardinal, woodpecker, sleeping squirrel, sparrows, chickadee, carnivorous plant, and a turtle back at the pond. Pretty eventful day, April 15, 2026. Staff were helpful and nice! Nature Center provides wildlife education and animals, a place to refill water or use the utilities. I wouldn't expect to see all that we seen, as think we were pretty lucky to come across all of that in one day. For instance as soon as we sat down on the bench near the river, the hawk flew over and landed nearby, first to get a drink of water then perched nearby. The fox happened to be coming to the river before we locked eyes and ran off while I fumbled with my dang lens cap, as always. Good luck! read more

Love this place to much!! There is always a teenager working in the little animal busking who is so kind and knowable about the animals. My kids love it!! read more

Hidden Pond Nature Center - Parks Near Me - Springfield, Virginia

Disclaimer: this is a review of the outdoor areas as the nature center itself is currently closed. I had visited the trails here a few times to hike, but this was my first time bringing my 2 year old. We came on a Sunday in the early afternoon. Parking is easy as there is a dedicated lot. Adjacent to the parking lot is the playground. It has a very cute nature theme. The biggest problem was that the tot area is for, I'd say, younger than two, so I really had to watch my son on the larger play area to make sure he didn't get run over by one of the many rowdy children. It was also getting crowded at one point so we left. Perfect opportunity to walk around. The trail around the pond is perfect for toddlers. There are a few points where you can walk out and get a closer look at the pond. There wasn't much happening due to the season, but it's a Hoppin' place (literally) come spring. We also went a little bit down a paved path towards some shelters built from logs. We didn't make it far because my boy just wanted to stand on the bridge and throw sticks in the water ‍. We had a fun few hours and are looking forward to visiting again when the nature center reopens. read more

This can be good for little ones. There are solid educational programs here. All of the park authority employees are great. The building where animals are housed, has seen better days. A renovation would probably help. As for animals they have a black rat snake, yellow rat snake, venomous copperhead, turtles, frogs, and salamanders. These are all well taken care of. As for parking it's a strange situation. All spots are at the end of a residential street. Do be careful as a circle with cars stacked in, can lead to unintended moments. There is a pond behind the building. Here you can see lots of turtles, birds, and other wildlife. I'll give it an average rating, as it's a hour visit maximum. If they could expand on this a bit, that would be an improvement. read more

I this was a nice find. They have a great, fenced in play area for big and little kids with lots of climbing, sliding and swinging options. There's a water fountain out front if you forget water. Unfortunately the shade is minimal so it can be a bit toasty on hotter days BUT there are some great hiking trails that are shaded and cool adjacent the park. read more

All the gardens are being refurbished with pollinator and native plants. There is a strong garden volunteer community that is rehabilitating the garden spaces. The pollinator garden has a bee sculpture, fairy village and a dig table. Trails are labeled and clear. Great place. read more

Hidden Pond is a Fairfax County park in West Springfield. The park is well-known for its eponymous pond and its Nature Center. Prominent along the wildlife here are the turtles of Hidden Pond, notably Box Turtles and Painted Turtles. They can be frequently be seen around the pond, especially perched on the famous turtle logs. The pond leads to a small stream which flows into Pohick Creek. Amid these watercourses and woods are several nature trails. Most people will focus on the nature center and the footpath around the pond. The nature center has exhibits on the fauna of the park and hosts a number of programs for children and Cub, Boy and Girl Scouts. Hidden Pond is an ideal place to take children and grandchildren to acquaint them with the natural world. What a lovely hidden retreat nestled between suburban homes. I was pleasantly surprised upon driving in to see so many children and parents in the playground area. Parking is fairly plentiful at peak hours. Although most of the parking spaces were filled, the high turnover of departing cars never seemed to leave any car stranded waiting for a spot. The playground is fun and non-wood, so no worries of splinters! Its amenities are novel and not boring. They have a play area for the littles and a play area for the bigger kids as well as a neat variety of swings. The nature center is tiny, but it's such a nice little facility to have. It has a small variety of aquariums and terrariums displaying some local wildlife. The best part of the facility is the view overlooking the pond. The volunteers running the nature center are upbeat and friendly. The surrounding nature trail is a wonderful treat. You'll find many locals, children, and dogs on the trail. The trail itself is not stroller friendly, so be prepared to carry your little(s) in your arms or in a baby carrier to get on the trail. This entire area is wonderful in that there's so much to see in a small area, so if you're looking for a quick outing that won't take up hours in your day, this is such a pocketed gem! read more

Hidden down the end of a residential street is a nice park with a nature center. The nature center opens at 12 on Sundays so I didn't get to check in out. There is a kids jungle gym and tennis courts and a short trail down to the pond. Parking lot is small but has one spot for a bus to park. You can't hear any major traffic while at this park which is the major plus I noticed. read more

The park definitely lives up to its name of "hidden" so get out your trusty gps! I only came to the park to use the tennis courts so my review is limited to them - there are three gated tennis courts which are secluded (as should be expected), however, the courts did not appear to be in great shape. There were a lot of cracks and "dead" spots...mostly likely due to use and/or weathering. Hopefully, they are much better in the spring or whenever they are scheduled for repair. read more

A calm park with a new gated playground for the kids & refreshing water fountains nearby. The lake water was murky & green with way too much algae but there's plenty of animals so I guess they don't mind. The turtles like to swim right up to you (in hopes for treats I bet) It's a good place to take the kids for a safe adventure away from our all consuming technologies. read more

Hidden Pond Nature Center - A calm park with a new playground for the kids. - Parks Near Me - Springfield, Virginia

I lived in this neighborhood growing up and have fond memories of walking around the pond with my dad and our dog as a kid. Now that I am a grown up I enjoy taking friends with kids to the nature center. They have a great playground out front and wonderful summertime activities in the rec room of the center. The top portion of the center is set up as a hands on learning experience. There are snake skins, bones, pelts and other assorted things for the kiddos to play with. They also have some animals on display and the employees are fantastic and very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of the area. Then there is the pond itself. I have seen beavers, turtles, fish, frogs, assorted birds and lots of creepy crawlies here over the years. It's a wonderful Springfield treasure. read more

Don't misunderstand the 1 star. The 1 star is for the lack of maintenance, and a very very unhealthy pond that is 2" deep, and completely covered in green slime. The fish are all 3" long if that. The only place the pond is deep enough to fish is blocked by pricker and other bushes that your tackle will tangle in. The pond is sick and needs to be dredged. The "officials" at the pond are all 13 to 16 year old kids. So, I put in a call to Gerry Connolly's office and to Mr. Herrity's office for help. The tennis courts are dilapidated, the playground equipment is old and some of it was recently removed (monkey bars) because it either broke or was too dangerous. No one will tell me. I live one mile from Hidden pond, and my kids love it, but no one loves the smell of Methane (turtle waste and green slime). So, what is is going to take to get a backhoe out there and just dredge it so fish can grow to healthy size, and introduce something that will eat the green slime. This is a great gem of a place to take your kids. The playground is fenced in and adequately wood chipped. I only wish the toddler (Younger kid area) was equal size to the older age section. There are plenty of swings in good condition. And the nature center is just the right size to see a sampling of live exhibits. read more

This place is wonderful! I take the kids I nanny (9 and 11) there all the time... they request we go actually! They love to walk around the pond and search for turtles and frogs. Inside the actual nature center is great too... lots to see!! read more

This is a great place to take the kids for an afternoon adventure. This park is located in a neighborhood, so it might throw some people off that they are going to the right location. The park has an outdoor playground and a small trail that goes around the pond as well as a nature center that has a few housed animals like turtles and snakes. Definitely a must see when exploring Fairfax county. read more

This park is really good. And if you go at morning you have shade. My kids have a really good time there.

I have been going to this park since I was a kid. I love this place. They have a beautiful pond with fish, frogs, turtles (even a big snapper!) and all different kinds of wild birds that fish here; I once watched a large bird catch and eat a catfish! The center always has interesting creatures to look at (all native to the area). One time they even had a black widow spider! Don't worry though; her cage is locked and escape proof. Their trails are something else. I get lost in the beauty of the woods whenever I go on walks here. There is a stream that runs along one of the back trails that is absolutely breathtaking. If you are a nature lover you really ought to visit Hidden Pond, you won't be disappointed! read more

I was here several weeks ago for a birthday party for a friend of my oldest. I can't say the facility looks great, but it was a really good experience. The upstairs display area is quite nice if not as extensive as some of the other Fairfax County Nature Centers. The downstairs party/multiuse space looks a bit rundown, but it is spacious enough for a kids party. The outdoor area and pond is quite nice, and they give a pretty good tour. All in all, it's a pretty good place. Might get 5 stars if I get there in the summer. read more

I'll be the first to admit, I lived in Northern Va for 18 years before I found this park. For me this is unusual too because park hoping is my most loved activity. This is certainly not my favorite park in NOVA but it is worth visiting for a romantic picnic, its best feature being a "hidden pond" it is pretty seclusive and has a great view. ENJOY read more

Found a black snake in my finished basement. I know they are harmless and good to have around to keep the mouse population down but don't want them in my house. Hiddenpond would not take the snake until the weather was decent outside to give it a chance to survive. Shame on Hidden pond. read more

The swings alone are genius and worth the extra drive up from Alexandria! I love that there's a baby swing attached so you (or older child) can simultaneously swing together. I appreciate it's also fenced in and the flow between toddler and older kid playground. I just prefer the bouncy rubber floor over the woodchips, that's my only "complaint" because little kids put it in their mouths. A great place to spend a few hours outside. Recent work done by the Boy Scouts have improved the looks of the area. A good children's center with a good meeting space downstairs. The trails are well maintained and are in good order. read more

Have enjoyed exploring. This historic park with friends. The house and grounds are extremely beautiful, well organized and maintained.

We live in West Springfield and had no idea that this Hidden Pond existed. We usually visit Lake Accotink Park or Burke Lake instead. If I'm honest, we were drawn here to see if there's any Pokemons or Poke stops. Not many of either but we were happy to find a "park" near our house. The Nature Center was closed when we arrived but there's a small trail where we can walk along the pond area. There's a catch and release policy for anyone fishing but I doubt there's many fish to begin with. The park and playground area is definitely dated. It would be nice if the county took better care of this facility. read more

Despite this place being "haunted", I've always loved coming here. Unlike most parks, this one has been well kept. The workers there are nice. You got a nice trail and beautiful sites. It's good for a relaxing walk. They also have a animal exhibit which is nice. I'll bring my kids here one day read more

We have been to Hidden Pond Nature Center for play dates, birthday parties and Camp Fire classes. The center is dated, not super clean and could use additional animals. Hidden Gem in Springfield VA. A little hard to find but worth it! The park is great for nature walk but the real asset of this park is the staff and volunteers at the nature center! They were so welcoming and informative about the animals and really went above and beyond to give the kids a "close encounter" with the animals they have in the center. Would highly recommend for a visit. I also met folks who rented one of the enclosures for a book club party that was overlooking the pond and it sounded very reasonable. I know they offer kids birthday parties, classes etc. read more

Hidden Pond Nature Center is a great place for families to have "family-time." There is a playground for all ages- with slides, monkey bars, swings, etc. There is also a fantastic 2-floor nature center. It has mice, turtles, snakes, toads, crayfish, spiders, and other fantastic creatures on the main floor (also a little shop with food, toys, and soveniers). The 2nd floor, has some more tanks with-fishes, turtles, and more mice. The park is very nice for it's nature trails. It has the main trail- With 3 bridges to cross and exaimine the pond more...as well as four or five boardwalks to go find animals with nets (you can get from the nature center). There are turtles on logs, skinks on the boardwalks, many unique plants, and many more plants and animals. There is also a hiking/biking trail (nature trail) there is about 3 nature trails you can choose from. There are also benches and water fountains along the way. Now...the negatives. I love Hidden Pond-my 8th birthday was there. But, they should really do something about the pond. The last time I went there was...about 2yrs ago...the pond was nice clear water with tadpoles, turtles, and crayfish you can see...but now there's tons of algae floating around! It looks like a green field! I couldn't see any of the great creatures there. I wish they can really do something about that. Overall, it was a nice little trip. Since it's in Springfield...well if you live in like Herndon or Leesburg...like an over 25min drive...it won't really be worth it though. But nice experiences. read more
