Family owned - Shop local! Got a custom water buffalo belt made for $40 and I would have paid more. A hidden gem in Missoula.

This is just what a REAL shoe store should be. Excellent customer service. You have to call ahead during Covid to make an appointment. I bought boots there for hiking this summer (Keens) a few months ago. Yesterday I bought a pair of Burkinstocks I have horrid feet and am having an ankle replacement in September and thrilled to find people who actually know what they are talking about. They have the best selection of comfortable high quality shoes, and the prices are reasonable.

I buy at least one, maybe three, pairs of shoes from Hide and Sole each year...and I don't even live in Missoula (at least not anymore)! The prices are good, sure. There's no sales tax, but that's the same as Oregon. I suppose what really does it for me is the excellent selection and customer service. For starters, the service staff here are second to none. They will not even pull out a shoe for you until they measure your foot! I appreciate the extra step. They also just plain have a lot of know-how. My husband, who got two pairs of shoes on this last trip, was talked out of his first choice on account of his extra narrow foot coupled with the known wear pattern of the particular shoe he was interested in. I'd forgotten what specialized service was like! The inventory is also a huge asset. I'll admit, the clearance section has me hooked and I love that it's prominently featured in the front of the store. I appreciate it anytime a place of business doesn't make me feel like a second-class citizen as I beeline for their discount rack. This spring alone I found a pair of ankle boots and a pair of flats in that section that have been in constant rotation all season. Additionally, even though H&S is a Dansko/Birk/Keen kind of place, they always carry the extra-cute stuff in abundance and in addition to the day-to-day staples. As a final note, this is THE SmartWool headquarters of downtown. Love all the cute ankle woolies and the sensible dress socks as well as the bulky hikers. Fun! read more

Hide & Sole has been a part of downtown Missoula for as long as we have lived here. Scott, the owner, has done many community endeavors to make a vital downtown. This small shop is definitely worth the trip, not only for the quality of shoes and leather goods, but the knowledgeable staff. It smells like quality just as you come in the door. I love this store. The staff are consistently friendly and upbeat, and so helpful! Every pair of shoes I've bought there--from sandals to heavy winter boots--has been because one of the staff members recommended them to me, and their recommendations are spot on. The shoes have all been super comfortable, while still stylish (not urban stylish, but laid-back stylish). When I had an issue with the heel of one of my boots, they fixed it for me for free. When one of my shoes was squeaking, and I thought it was the heel, the guy I talked to automatically diagnosed it without even looking at it--it was the removable insole!--and he fixed it on the spot. They regularly have extra discounts from local Val-paks. Really, if you want a long-lasting pair of super-comfortable shoes, go to Hide and Sole. They're doing it right. read more

Family run shoe store right in the heart of downtown Missoula. Always helpful staff that are incredibly knowledgeable and will do all they can to find the right fitting shoe. Something very unique is that they also sell leather by the size or by the hide. Varying colors. read more

They have a great selection of shoes and leathers, but their customer service really sets them apart. I was looking to get a pair of shoes for my 92 year old grandma, but she wasn't sure if she felt up to going to the store. I contacted the owner and he told me that they have a very generous return policy (of course the shoes should be only tried on, not worn outside). My husband and I were in 2 days in a row recently as we were in the market for Tevas or Chacos or something similar. We live in Oregon so we knew we wouldn't be able to easily exchange or return our purchase. That, and at 7 months pregnant in the Missoula summer heat, my feet were/are swollen and it made trying on shoes frustrating. Both of the women who helped us over the 2 days were very friendly and patient. My husband and I were both able to get some shoes and we love them! We didn't waste anytime breaking them in either as we stopped by Smith Rock outside of Bend on the way home for an impromptu hike. Thanks Hide and Sole! read more

Excellent service. I was in Missoula just for a few days and bought a pair of shoes here. I had to do an exchange (bigger size) but didn't have time to go to the store. I called in my problem, and they set aside a pair of shoes for me. They actually stayed past closing time to hand me my shoes as I double parked on the street on my way to the airport. Now THAT'S customer service, way above and beyond. read more
