Fisher House Bed and Breakfast - Charles' room features a king bed and maple trim made on the premises.

Craftsmanship Rebuilds an Extraordinary Corner Mansion…read more Beautiful, immaculate, and comfortable with a fascinating story, Fisher House Bed & Breakfast offers a lovely stay in Clinton, Iowa on a corner in walking distance of downtown shops, the amazing Seven Hills Brewery with wood-fired pizza, and the Mississippi River levee. Four traditionally furnished bedrooms (two queens, one king, and one king suite) have tasteful colors, lots of light, and crafted details. Each of the second floor bedrooms has an en suite bathroom with different combinations of tubs and/or showers. A huge bonus is a pleasant communal kitchen at the end of the wide hallway which has a small outside landing. We stayed in the Charles Baldwin Room with a lovely four-poster bed. Peggy reviews all breakfast choices for guests with an eye to any specific dietary needs and from continental to full breakfast has generous, delicious options. The welcoming entry opens to a main floor with a quiet living room, classic dining room, and enjoyable game/billiards room. This is not a remodel; this total rebuild was done with thoughtful planning and superb craftsmanship by the owners Dan and Peggy Fisher. Many aspects of the maple window trims, pocket doors, and wood flooring were custom made by Dan and his crew. The exterior is still in process. Wood was an important economic driver of Clinton, so the woodwork is a tribute to the town. We are already revising travel plans to revisit Fisher House. That says it all.

There is a reason why these rooms are the cheapest rooms in Clinton, Iowa. Upon checking in, the desk clerk informed me that the Clinton Police Department were on their way because even though the rooms were supposed to be non-smoking, the guest thought that smoking pot was allowed. I checked in to my FIRST room. It was a MILLION degrees. NO AIR. The desk did get me a couple of fans. The one box fan was so old that it didn't even have a dial...just a plug to plug it in. There was NO phone in the room. The room had been remodeled with a flat screen TV. However, the TV did not have a remote. When I got a remote, either it didn't go to the TV or something was wrong with the TV/connections because all I could get was white fuzz on the screen when I turned in on by hand. Oh yeah, and even with the first flush of the toilet...it backed up. Someone did come and plunge it, thankfully. However, I really didn't get sleep since it was so darn hot. The next morning, I walked out to the side parking lot. The side door is broken. Don't know if you should pull it in or push it out...regardless, I tripped and fell over the broken concrete outside the door in the parking lot. This was around 7am. I managed to get to the front desk and one of the employees did give me a washcloth, some antiseptic wipes and gauze. I asked about moving rooms and was told that I had to wait until after 3pm. Thankfully, I did get moved before then to a room that faces the inside. The new room had not been remodeled. It had a broken phone. The air conditioner was a contraption that sat next to the bathroom sink. There were children running up and down the hallways and blocking the doorway, people screaming. Not that I could get any sleep with how flat the pillows were. Even though I had three pillows, even stacked on top of each other...it wasn't the thickness of what one pillow should be. The bed was uncomfortable. I could barely sleep on it. The room was a lot bigger than the first room and even had a table with two chairs in it. This time, the TV did work. So, combination of bad pillows, bad bed, loud noises and the injuries I incurred...barely to no sleep that second night either. I went to Clinton for a wedding that Saturday and had planned on checking out and heading home on Sunday. However, because of my injuries and pain that I incurred in the parking lot, I couldn't drive back home on Sunday and ended up staying over night in the same second room for a second night. Not by choice. I did check out the prices at other places to stay at in Clinton. However, since I only had less than $80 left to find a place to stay and for gas to get me back to Kansas City, I had no other choice to stay at this location again. I now wished that I had just slept in the Wal-Mart parking lot there in town. It would have been cheaper to just buy some pillows there. And I probably would have slept better in my car than what I did at any time at this motel. Don't recall seeing any breakfast. Nor do I recall seeing any pool. I did get a free Clinton newspaper while staying there. Tried to use the internet but it was so slow that I couldn't do anything like check emails, etc. on my laptop. The parking is free....but BEWARE of its condition. It is really sad how the place has ended up. My dad had worked for the railroad out of Clinton, Iowa for 54 years. Many, many years ago, I stayed at this motel. It even had a bar at that time. It wasn't great even then but was much better than what this motel has become. It appears that they are trying to make this place better by remodeling the rooms. I hope that they also work on the exterior of this motel as well.
