Service and garden area is very well stocked even during the very warm weather. Customer service is very friendly!

Pro desk is great, but their in-stock inventory, especially plumbing and electrical parts, is often lacking. Basic fittings are frequently out of stock, and the bins aren't well kept--parts get mixed together. The lumber yard has some knowledgeable employees and lots of overly expensive warped wood. Cost is often 50% more than home improvement stores out of area. It seems HCL has shifted from being a hardware store to focusing on money-making merchandise. The high schoolers working there can show you a Carhartt jacket but know nothing about the trades and don't seem interested in finding someone who can help. read more

The guys in the outdoor equipment area were amazing. Drove down from June Lake to have my chainsaw looked at. They were able to look at it immediately and got it going quickly. Saved me from driving back down to pick it up again. This was great because I was under a deadline to get the cutting done. Had an extremely poor customer service experience at this location today. I purchased a current detector this week (along with about $500 in other items). I had some repairs I had to make while on a trip. The current detector did not work, in fact to a point it's a danger to someone if they blindly trusted it. I wanted to exchange for a better device. I figured no problem, right? Wrong... I didn't have a receipt, in fact I don't believe I was even offered a receipt, and if I was it definitely wasn't explained I wouldn't be able to return something without it. I honestly don't even think about returning things, it only happened because the device was defective. Look I get it, there's a lot of abuse and yes a receipt is important, but it's 2026 almost everywhere can look up a purchase on a card these days. It was more about the attitude and principle than anything else. There was no attempt to accommodate or even be decent. It would be one thing if I was asking for a straight refund, but I was upgrading to a $150 device (which I still purchased as I needed it). I was willing to show the device fault, but again no one cared. I love supporting small businesses, but this $23 device and poor service will have me going anywhere else and only back to Ace as a last resort. Thankfully Amazon ships here, just takes a few days longer. If I wasn't heading back home I would have just ordered it there. Hopefully in the future you'll find a better way to support your customers. I come here every year around this time and you were my go to location for parts. Next time I'll just wait it out for Amazon. read more

My husband has been coming to High Country Lumber/ Ace for years when we're at our cabin near Mammoth. I happened to join him this day and I'm so glad I did. It's so easy to find items, it's not a huge store like Lowe's and Home Depot. It's very clean inside and out. They also have salespeople that can easily help you. In Bishop there is not much choices for hardware stores. Found the store to be bigger than expected. I found all my parts that I needed for a plumbing repair job. I needed to pick up some energy logs in the yard part of High Country lumber, so I stopped in on Saturday. An employee named Landon loaded the energy logs for me, and I wandered over to the scrap wood bin to see if I could find anything to work with my Halloween decorations. When I told Landon what I needed the wood for, he instantly had a better idea, took me outside to show me stronger, wood stakes, and discarded rebar; then back inside to show me how to secure the rebar and stake together. My yard art 'Skelly McSkeletons' will now hang out in the front yard, without falling down, or falling over. Thanks, Landon for thinking outside the skeleton! I'm staying nerdy, you stay cool. We arrived at 2:56. To go do some pricing on an incredibly large purchase and we were not even going to make the purchase on this day. We went to look at the price of drywall and insulation in the lumber yard to budget the next project and a young skinny kid walked directly out to us and I assumed he was going to try and help us like a normal customer interaction. We told him we just needed to check prices which would have taken a minute or two at the most instead he told us that we had two minutes before they closed and that we actually needed to go ahead and leave now. We had no intentions of making a single person lift a single finger yet this kid decided it was time we leave because they closed in two more minutes. He was incredibly rude and honestly I've never been treated that way at Ace Hardware let alone any retail store. After that interaction with that rude kid I will be taking my business to home lumber and or drive to Carson to not have to deal with somebody with such a bad attitude and horrible customer service. Over the past five years we've remodeled two older homes and have spent at least $60,000 at Ace on all of our building supplies. We're in the store almost every day spending on average $60-$200 per visit and will be sure to not make any further purchases at ace. You are always treated with respect and appreciation at home lumber and I'll drive several extra miles to support a business that ensures their employees value their customers I hope Jeff takes note and retrains the guys in the lot to not run off customers... read more

Hello! This is my first yelp review! I have to say, I'm not one to typically write reviews or get online to talk about a shopping experience but this was really over the top customer service. I came in with a laundry list of items and I was greeted by a friendly associate who wasn't able to help with what I needed so she went to get her manager. Shortly after an associate named Curt came and introduced himself and asked how he could help. I came in looking for a few things and he immediately knew where they were. Curt was extremely friendly and seemed very knowledgeable and most importantly he was very friendly. Although I ordered my BGE back in late July and it was on back order, Scott the manager and the rest of the staff there followed the status of my order until it finally arrived just recently. The staff is really nice and the store has a great selection of tools, hardware, lumber and a lot more! I've always been able to find what I need & if I can't find something Jeff will get it for me. I've built two vintage Harley Davidson motorcycles & there's a bunch of polished stainless hardware from high country on them. The guys at the contractors desk are good too. Ivan is a knowledgeable guy that always takes care of us when it comes to lumber & building materials. It feels good to live in a place with businesses like this! Living where we live can be a challenge when you need something. It's not uncommon to have to drive 100-150 miles to find things most people would just run down the street for. And if you're like me, you probably like to have options. When many of the local places might have one or MAYBE two items to choose from (and they look like they've been in the store for a few years), HCL stocks a variety of current products, which is refreshing. I dread visiting High County Lumber. I put off projects, let household repairs languish, sharpen my own lawn mower blades rather then pass through the sliding doors. So why do I let my roof leak instead of buying roof cement here... it's the NOISE!!! To be precise, It's pop country "Music" played way too loud. It's the worst of the worst county fair schlock music. No, really, its horrible! Aside from the aural insults, the aisles are frequently short stocked. They keep an overly tight inventory. The most common plumbing fittings can be out of stock because the truck hasn't arrived. You'd think 1/2 PVC elbows were perishable goods requiring refrigeration; that back stock might perish if they had too many on hand. And then let me mention ridiculously high prices. They get you in the store by advertising lost leaders--cheap lawn chairs, or cheap plastic Chinese storage bins, or one-season rakes for nearly nothing, but that 1/2 PVC elbow, you can buy 5 of them for the price of a T-Bone steak. Common size screws sold by the piece--2 for a dollar. Really, take a look you'll be amazed and insulted. But what are you going to do? Home Depot is 100 miles away. Finally, the lumber yard boys have chips on their shoulders; and not from using the radial arm saw. They really make you feel that it's a privilege to have them pull lumber for you. No "how can I help," instead customers get "what do you want." These guys do a disservice to the business. To reward these guys I don't buy wood here anymore. I go to Home Lumber down the street where I'm always a priority customer (no affiliation). The business name says it all: HIGH priced inventory COUNTRY music that's the worst LUMBER yard you avoid I give them 2 stars rather than one because those disposable rakes they carry only cost $5. read more

The new Garden Center is filled with beautiful plants that are suited for our climate and the staff is helpful and knowledgeable! I'm not a contractor and is reflected in the service you receive from the staff in the yard in Bishop. It is toi much of an inconvenience for them to assist you and will give you plenty of attitude and well honestly hostile / threatening body language. If you happen to be looking for a part inside and need help be prepared to not be able to find anyone and again when you do be prepared to have your questions addressed with a rush and plenty of indifference especially if you are a woman. You will pay a premium for your lumber which if you have delivered will contain warped or bad lumber. I've spent well over 4k at this location in the last year and will not be back. There is another alternative to this store and I would recommend you use it. Shame om you HCL for treating customers this way and for your price gouging. read more

My visits to ACE High Country Lumber are always great. Regardless of how busy it may be, the staff is beyond helpful. Today, Thor in the lumber department went well out of his way to ensure my 92 years young aunt's needs were met. In spite of it digging into his lunch hour he methodically cut wood to custom make the sizes we needed. Theresa took extra time from her cashiering duties to 1st make certain that the checkout was covered, and then went hunting in the outside Feburary cold to dig through bins to find what we needed. Reading the reviews and saw something negative about an employee of yours. I believe I know who JADE.T is talking about, I've seen that lady with the tattoos before there. She helped me the other day, super helpful lady and very sweet. I noticed she was by herself when she was assisting me, I needed some 2x2's and another customer was asking for help and she couldn't take them to the item so pointed in the direction it was. I get it sometimes we get frustrated because we need help and don't feel like the associate is being considerate. I'm not sure if this person has ever worked retail, don't get me wrong I get it it's her JOB, but having worked retail sometimes it's overwhelming when you have multiple customers asking for help or you get carried away with a task and accidentally zone out in your JOB. Today I went to Ace to get 150ft of chicken wire. That's roughly 200$. I struggled to carry it a crossed the yard as at least 3 young men working there walked by. I get it in to the store but not all the way to "line starts here mark" but close"ish" to the register. Now, it's Virus season so there's some special protocols i know but i was still 6 ft from everyone and had my mask on. So i let the one man in line go, and then asked the 2 cashiers which side i should move to. (At this point I'm already frustrated from carrying that large thing across the yard with no help, then almost flipping the shopping cart while trying to get it in there.) The cashier reprimands me quite rudely for not being in the correct place where the line starts. I explained to her that's it's like 3 ft away and i just could not maneuver this large thing over there. She was annoyed with me and said some rude snarky thing back to me. In the End I left the chicken wire there in the isle and left the store bc i realized this was not somewhere that deserved any of my hard earned money. I will find another local spot to buy what i need from now on. In the bio on Yelp it says customer service is a priority? I saw none of that today! No stars for this place!. I had to choose one star so that my review could be posted, but they deserve zero stars. I went in there today to buy a name brand lawn tool and the guy told me that because it was Sunday, they could not sell me the item I wanted. I said "are you kidding?", he wasn't kidding! Because I wanted a demonstration of the item, and a certified salesperson for the product I wanted wasn't working, they could not sell me the item. I was told that they have a salesperson that is certified to sell this item working Monday through Saturday, but this place is open 7 days a week. IMHO, if they are open 7 days, everything in their inventory should be up for sale 7 days, not 6. The sales staff I talked with today did not seem apologetic in the least, their attitude was "this is our way, if you don't like it, oh well." No apology, or offer of compensation for my inconvenience due to their silly scheduling was stated or implied. This is the fault of the "management" for poor staffing policies. The good ole boy network/mindset is alive and well in Bishop, if I had been a member of that network, I still may not have gotten what I came in for, but I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I would have been treated with more respect. I have no intention of spending my money there ever again, nor will I refer anyone to this establishment. read more

Always had hit or miss service here. A few staff are excellent while the rest drag down the overall score for the rest of them. More training on customer service, especially the yard guys is in order. Selection as a hardware store is pretty good. They recently upgraded their plant offerings and now have a very nice little nursery outside. The plant selection was excellent. Appropriate plants for our climate finally! I get so tired of seeing things that won't live thru our cold winters or the dry heat in the summer. They did their homework. And the plant prices were just what you would pay in a city-totally fair. I used to buy most plants out of town but will now shop here first. The garden supplies were also hugely improved with lots of organic fertilizers, pots, and yard decorations. Two thumbs up on that wonderful improvement. Hope to see that continue as it made a huge improvement to the store. read more
