A big, tall & bald headed guy that was at the front desk stated he has a smaller room since I was only one person. I asked to see the room and I could hear him make a groaning noise. When he came out of the office, he made we walk in front of him upstairs and to the room (even though I had no idea where it was). He opened the door and said "don't touch anything ". I walked in, looked at the room and placed my knee on the bed to check the firmness. He quickly stated, "I told you not to touch anything!" He also wanted to argue with me about politics stating "You voted for that big stupid idiot orange man?!" (President Donald Trump) and just kept talking even after I stated, I'm not going there with you." Very unprofessional and rude. I have attached a picture of the room that I was charged $86.58. This is a very good 2-Star+ motel. No, it's not the Hilton or even Holiday Inn Express, but it cost about half as much or less. Sure, the building is from the late '50's I think, but it is very well maintained, and the parking lot is lit up at night like the Berlin Wall was. The bed was comfortable, and everything was pretty darn clean. It's right on 29 Palms Highway, State 62. The park is across the street, and pretty much everything from Walmart to fast food to drug stores and gas stations are nearby. We specified a no-smoking, no-pets upstairs room, and that's exactly what we got. Nice views, by the way. Vijay, the resident manager (and perhaps owner) was quite helpful in suggesting a great restaurant for breakfast (The Crossroads), and our 2-day stay was without any problems or issues. We booked online. We have a legit service dog. My husband is in a wheelchair. There was one person ahead of me while we were checking in and the manager of the hotel denied that they were registered guests because they had registered with a service dog and the manager continued to tell them that they needed to call and cancel their reservation so they left and I walked in and said I just booked my hotel five minutes ago. I've driven over here. I do have a legitimate service dog with tags. I'm in your parking space that I have my handicap parking in and he said if you need a service dog room you need to call us ahead of time. You should never just come in and I did not understand this. I said well I've only made my reservations for five minutes since I have to make sure that the room I have available for you is ready he said well I do have a downstairs room. I said I do need a downstairs room and therefore we went in not many problems not a big deal however we fed our dog outside on a tray that they had in the room which I was going to wash because he seemed to be so concerned about the dog being in the room. I did not want my dog to eat in the room and I was going to wash the plastic tray that they had under the coffee pot and he came out to the pool area and gave us a hard time and told us that we should not be out there doing that so the guy was just really problematic. The hotel was cheap was 85 or $75. There was very little pillows on the bed very few blankets on the bed but we would've never complained but the management was so awful and so rude that I would not expect him to have many clients. He told me clients complain all this all the time about everything at this hotel, but the only reason that we are complaining is because that the management was so terrible. He's definitely anti-Pats even though we had a legitimate service dog. My husband is in a wheelchair and he did not want us to even take the room because it was not ADA approved, but I said my husband can get into a bed. We did not use the bathroom. I'd really give this place zero stars if I could. Long story short, the office manager rang our room phone to yell and threatened to call the police on us a mere 10 mins after we checked in because someone accused us of banging on the walls and doors even though we had just arrived and were relaxing in silence under the AC. We went in person to the office to see what was up because it was very scary and uncomfortable, especially since it was just me and my friend (two young females) and he never apologized or anything. I broke out in hives an hour later. Heard weird noises near our bed during the night. Found a giant cockroach dying right outside our door. Pros: cost. It was one of the lowest you'll find in the area. Free coffee and cable TV. It's also right next to the entrance of the Joshua Tree national park. Con: you get what you paid for. The room stank with cigarette smell, window curtains had holes in them, beddings looked like it's been used since the 80s. Carpet was almost sticky when you walk on it barefoot. Shower head spewed water all over, hairdryer was defective. Toilet was loose so if you are fat, you'll probably break it. I couldn't trust the bed enough to sleep in my undies, I wore my full long sleeves, pants and socks the whole night. read more

Paid in cash at checkin, next morning at checkout the lady at the desk claimed her manager "reviewed" security footage and said we should not paid $40 instead of the $85 that we gave them. Wouldn't let us see the footage ourselves to verify. Threatened to get the cops involved if we didn't pay what they claimed we still owed. It's good for what it is, which is basically a cheap crash pad/store your stuff while you go around Joshua Tree. A day trip in JT before heading to LA was on the books but we audibled to hike some more for a day. As we were driving in my friend was searching for a cheap place to stay and High Desert fit the bill and it's location near the visitor's center one of the entrances was a plus and the rooms looked ok from the web. As we pulled in, we had some second thoughts, it was pretty dark and well, I've stayed in motels like this on long drives and used to motels that clearly cater to people passing through. Check-in was easy, you could tell there were vacancies from the empty parking lot. The room was on the first floor and I opened it to find a basic room. Nothing special, the bed was old but well maintained, and the fixtures were also a little old as well. There was a little bit of a musty smell but once we turned the AC on it was fine. The room was pretty spacious but for no reason. The bathroom for example was huge but it was just a bunch of empty space. The room too also, I'm guessing the current fixtures were smaller than the originals. Wifi was finicky, it would work and then have issues and it meant having to disconnect and reconnect. Fortunately, my phone worked in the area. If I wanted a cheap place to stay over a weekend, I might consider it. read more

So we joked that this place looked like it belonged in a Quentin Tarantino movie...and there were jokes about whether the Feds were gunna bust down the door during the night. BUT -- It's clean. The room is spacious and bathroom easily accommodates wheelchairs...toilet had a ribbon of paper to prove that housekeeping worked on it; it was across the top so you had to pull off...the towels are white and freshly laundered. I looked under the sheets at a corner of the bed seams, no creepy crawlies...no bedbug dirt. In fact the bed under the retro coverlet was well made and sheets tightly tucked. GOOD JOB housekeeping!!! The clerk/owner (?) at the desk was helpful about restaurant recommendations. He gave us a card with discounts on it...and inside the office, there are menus on the wall. We used a coupon for an Indian restaurant called SAM'S PIZZA, which was a nice surprise. And the next morning, they recommended another place CROSSROADS CAFE that had Vegan options. It wasn't on the coupon card tho, but hey, vegan options! There's a swimming pool, but we didn't use it. I had the room with a double bed...there was a flat-screen tv...there were four mints on the writing table...there was free wifi...the air conditioner worked and had a control that you could actually, well, control. I set it on COLD and on High upon leaving for dinner. When I returned, YES!, my room was a frig and that was just fine by me...it was 102 outside. HINT: You might have to turn the setting on the AC to OFF or to AUTO because it blows right across the head of the bed...and it's noisy...but I actually just slept with my back turned...so the blast of the cold doesn't hit you in the face. There's ample parking and you can monitor your car from your room window, if you are nervous because you have an expensive telescope in the trunk. The clients here are mostly budget conscious...young hikers and outdoorsy people...tourists...nice friendly people on vacation. OVERALL: Clean. Convenient to the Northwest gate of Joshua Tree...also convenient (within walkiing distance) to a mini mall where there is a liquor store and a pharmacy and SAM'S for Indian food or sandwiches. TWO DRAWBACKS: I could hear some early morning bedroom stunts, which shock the walls, while I couldn't hear voices or conversations (Whew!), my room wall was banging and vibrating...for about 15 minutes. Poor girl. I figured it was part of the charm of motels along a big highway, so five stars anyway!! I'm writing this review in hopes that nobody has to go through what I went through at this place. I don't understand how they can still be operating at this point. It was a red flag when I saw a man arguing with some woman near the laundry room prior to checking in. I did not expect the man who was giving this woman a hard time to be the manager. I overlooked this just because I needed a place to stay last minute. I was experiencing some issues with the A/C unit in the room, so I tried contacting the manager but it took a while. When he finally answered, he just gave me some excuse about how he couldn't get a guy up here to fix it. I suggested him letting me move to a different room but he wouldn't even allow that. I said fine because I couldn't afford to stay anywhere else. I thought that was the worst that could possibly happen but I was wrong. I woke up that night in a hot sweat due to the A/C being busted. I couldn't go back to bed cause of the heat so I stayed up. It was around 1 in the morning when I heard scratches coming from by the door. I figured it was maybe a raccoon or some other animal that just happened to come by. But then I saw the silhouette of a person standing outside my window. I felt a chill run down my spine and hopped out of bed into the bathroom. I held my phone in my hands and got ready to call someone if I heard anything else. Nothing happened for a few minutes so I went back and the figure was gone. I tried to go back to bed but I just couldn't. I stayed up into the morning and left right when the sun appeared. He gave us a room that was a MESSSSS housekeeping was just starting to clean it, he did not make us aware of this. 10 min after checkout I got a call from the same white man asking if my boyfriend and I were PIGS and hangs up the phone. High Desert Motel was a great place for me to stay before heading on my adventure through Joshua Tree National Park. It's a simple and clean motel situated right in the heart of the town of Joshua Tree. I found the whole area in general to be really calm and pleasant. It sort of help set the tone for Joshua Tree...being at the entrance to the heart of the desert! Prices here were very reasonable. I had a good nights rest and felt refreshed the next morning. Before leaving town, I quickly stopped at a local supermarket to grab plenty of water and food for my journey as there's none whatsoever inside the park. For anyone venturing out to Joshua Tree NP, I'd certainly recommend the High Desert Motel. read more

Worst checkin on a prepaid booking through booking.com I have ever experienced. Couldn't hear the guy through the glass window with the grill that would normal let people communicate because apparently it was covered. So the prepaid transaction started with shouting to be heard. Then I was going to be held up for what apparently was a $100 cleaning/deposit fee on a $68 room. UNACCEPTABLE. My prepaid reservation was not canceleble, but the proprietor Then offered to cancel my reservation if I was not happy. So he can bilk another weary traveler apparently, and be paid twice. More arguing about deposit/cleaning terms and I finally had to demand the key for the ropm to end the lecture. This motel was a 2-star on Booking.com and I suppose i should have know better. The room was a near wreck, a TV the size of a computer monitor, and a table from a cocktail lounge dance bar. The sadest part of this mess was driving half an hour out of my way for this dump. Very nice motel and in the category of small independent motels, one of the best I've stayed at. Great owner who keeps the place up nicely. Everything was quite clean. Fairly quiet except for traffic on the highway, but that's not bothersome. They have a washer & dryer - $2 each. Dryer runs long enough to get a full load dry. Small TV but who cares? Cheap door lock which is not very secure. This would be the one item I wish they'd upgrade. Refrigerator and microwave in the room. Fridge doesn't hold much due to poor design that incorporates a 12 oz can rack in the door. But if you're not staying long, it's probably big enough. Free wi-fi in the room and although it's not the quickest you'll encounter, it got the job done. Convenient to Joshua Tree National Park and the few good restaurants in town. Half block from Sam's Market and Sam's Pizza & Indian (one of the good restaurants). The larger town of Yucca Valley is just a few minutes the other direction. read more

No. But it was clean! Ok, on the the rest of the review. Price is great! There were no frills, but did have a microwave, mini fridge, and coffee maker in the room. The mattress was hard, but after a long day we didn't even care. Highway was noisy, but that is really unavoidable. I travel to about 15 cities in the US per year to meet with clients, colleagues and students who come in from across the US and from around the world to meet with me. In most cities, I stay at fairly high-priced IHG hotels (such as high-end Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza, Kimpton Hotel, Hotel Indigo, the Intercontinental, and, in Vegas, the Palazzo), but when I booked my December stay in Joshua Tree back in January of this year (2019), I discovered that there were no IHG hotels in Joshua Tree, and realized that I would need to find another option for my stay and for that of some of my colleagues. After having done quite a bit of due diligence research on the web and also after having spoken with some locals here in JT (and I should mention here that room rate per night was not much of a concern, as I often pay between $225 and $380 per night for stays at high-end IHG hotels in many cities), I ultimately chose the High Desert Motel for my 8-day stay in December. I am now halfway through that earlier-mentioned 8-day stay, and I am EXTREMELY HAPPY that I chose this motel from among all of the other options available back in January when I made the bookings. In fact, once I arrived here, I verified that this motel, as is commonplace for almost all motels, did not have a meeting room that I could rent by the hour or by the day so that I could meet with clients, students and colleagues, and so I chose, by the morning after I had first arrived, to also rent a second king bed room, equipped with a sofa and three chairs, for the duration of my stay to use it as a meeting room. And, I should mention here that by my third day here, I was enjoying the motel and the nearby Sam's Grocery store and Sam's Pizza and Indian Restaurant so much, as were each of my clients, colleagues and students, that I decided to extend my stay here (and my rental of both rooms) from 8 days to 13 days in length! BTW, I want to mention here that all of my dealings with the motel staff at the front desk have been with the man whom I believe to be the manager and owner, and I believe that his name is Vijay. I have very much enjoyed all of my interactions with him, and I always find him to be very helpful and professional. And now, down to some brass tacks (that is, details and stuff) about my experience here: As I briefly mentioned above, I am renting two single-king bed rooms, each with a refrigerator and microwave (each modern, clean and spotless) for 13 days, both of which are on the 2nd floor, and I have already been here for 4+ days. One of my colleagues is also staying here in another room as well (and, BTW, he also loves this motel. despite the fact, that, like me, he normally stays at expensive high-end IHG hotels...!). Please understand from the start that this is a basic motel, and that is all that it claims to be -- it is not a Kimpton, nor a Hotel Indigo, nor the Palazzo (Vegas), but the room rate is also one-sixth to one-tenth the room rate at one of those 5-star hotels. Having said that, I have found that both rooms that I'm renting are spotlessly clean & perfectly maintained, and are in perfect condition, as is also true of the building exterior, the walkways in front of the rooms on both floors, the parking area (which also sports 2 picnic tables and grills...!), and the rest of the motel property. So, in every way, and particularly for the AMAZINGLY LOW nightly rate that I paying for each room (well below $60/nite), I feel that this motel deserves 5 stars, and if I could give it 6 stars on a 5-star scale, I would do so in a heartbeat! BTW, this building is very sturdily and robustly built; it was built in 1992, according to the manager. It seems to be made out of thick poured reinforced concrete, and this includes walls, ceilings, floors and walkways, and thus the rooms are very quiet and I never hear sounds from other rooms or from outside, with the exception of sounds from a few very loud vehicles on the highway outside; this is despite the fact that my two rooms are located only a few doors from the highway end of the building. BTW, I want to mention that I have stayed in a number of motels over many years, particularly in motels near airports or resort areas (e.g., beaches, etc.), and I can state unequivocally that this is the best, and best-maintained, and cleanest, motel in which I have every stayed in my life. In fact, as I mentioned before, as a basic motel, when compared to the 5-stay IHG hotels in which I regularly stay such as Kimpton Hotel, Hotel Indigo, Intercontinental Hotel and the Palazzo in Las Vegas, for the price (i.e., the room rate), this motel is a 5-star gem! In fact, while my two rooms were rented at room rates below $60 per night, I would willingly pay three times that rate, or more, per night to be able to stay at this property! You may rest assured that for any future stays in Joshua Tree, I will definitely be staying at this hotel, as will some of my clients and colleagues! read more

This is a roadside motel that isn't trying to be anything fancier than that. The bed was extremely uncomfortable. The room was rundown and probably hasn't been updated in a couple decades. The curtains don't totally cover the window so people can kind of see into your room. Rough towels, and linens. I would've been much more comfortable camping or just sleeping in my car. As far as roadside motels it's a 3/5. As far as overall places I'd ever want to spend the night again it's a 1/5. read more

If you are looking for a safe, clean place near Joshua Tree NPS this Motel is for you. I read reviews before booking as I was looking for a last minute place to stay after canceled camping plans due to extreme heat warnings. The High Desert Motel is just a few short blocks from the visitor center and about 5 mins to the west entrance of the park. There is a Walmart 5 mins away as well. The rooms have microwaves and mini fridges, plus there are plenty of places to eat near by. The bed was really comfortable and I was thankful to have a cool place to sleep. Yes the building is older and the decor is dated, but this is one of the cleanest places I have stayed in. The Motel has been booked but it seems pretty quiet here. Highly recommend for travelers on a budget. read more

The room does not look like the photos shown on their website. Our room was old, the carpet was sooo dirty and smelled like old musty urine. The bathroom smelled like urine and the shower curtain smelled like urine. There was a drainage problem in the tub, which is so unsanitary. Towels were old and unclean. The microwave and the fridge were clean. Sheets were clean but the bedspread was old and stained. And the coffee maker had slime at the bottom of the water well. Nasty discovery to make first thing in the morning. I am offended that I was given an old room, even though I made advance reservations and checked in at 2:00. The photos shown on the website are not indicative of what you will get. Exactly what you need. This is far-and-away (though, not at all like that movie Far and Away) your best cheap option near J-Tree. So there were once motels all over Amurrrrica where the iconic Innkeeper was your silent associate for all manner of unsavory activities. S/he gave you a quiet, frilless, enclosed-space with a locking door in which you could do gawdknowswhat. You were handed a key for cash and as long as the cash flowed, nothing was said, and that space was yours. Maybe a nod and a smirk? Maybe an ironic remark about "new linens"...but that was it. Save burning things, or the production of horrible screams, your secrets were safe with the man behind the counter. He had cash in pocket, you had your whatever in someone / something else's whatever. Hold on a second...I need to go salute a flag and hug a baby bald eagle... Anyways. Where was I? Nowadays...what with all them corporations running our motels, conformity, cleanliness...and some other C-word? ...corporateness...are like, all the rage. Dated, like 70s? Mold in bathroom. Funky bath towels. GROSS. The only reason we paid $95/night and stayed here was because of pure desperation. My advise. Stay away fron this dump. read more

I'm giving this place a 5 star not because it is a 5 star establishment, bt for what it was (a dinky motel in the middle of the desert), I was impressed. For the price I paid, I fully expected to bust out my lysol and alcohol wipes. The rooms were clean, the staff was friendly and accommodating. I asked to stay an additional night and they were able to accommodate my request and moved me to a different room, equally clean and comfortable. I would for sure stay here again and recommend it to anybody heading to the park. read more

I agree to the Microwave. Refrigerator and Cleanliness. I stayed in the Motel for 5days because of work. I thought the Itchiness was due to DrySkin. But after my Work Assignment and got Home. I saw the enormous Bugbites on my back side and extrimities as well. I do not know whats in that room 10?. The owner is very pleasant and nice but definitely i am not going back to the place. read more
