Mild manor, extremely professional person to deal with experienced or novice fishermen. My cousin has used Nick several times and highly recommends him. My search for scallops just got SERIOUS. The official scalloping season for Tampa Bay this year is July 1st-September 24th. As of August 9th there are still many scallops to be scooped! My family coordinated a charter with High Octane on Crystal River for a scalloping adventure. We were most drawn to this family run business because of the proficiency of their website. The couple has invested a great amount of time in keeping the page updated and full of insight. This includes boat specs, and fishing reports. (My husband checks Surfline daily, this is just the kind of geeky stuff he loves.) The scalloping charter is all inclusive. For $475 we got a 4 hour excursion for 6 people with use of all gear and access to use their coolers. Of course because of the pandemic they are going above and beyond to ensure sanitization standards are met and exceeded-still, we opted to use our own snorkel gear for personal comfort. The trip started with a 15 minute idle down the fresh water river. We got to cruise through some brackish water, before jetting out into the open salt water. It was so cool to see the change in water and environment. Of course there's nothing like the feeling of speeding across open water! Nothing beats it. This is an experience that can be as educational as you want it to be. Our charter was lead by Captain Hailey and Jason "Jase." Both are full of so much knowledge and experience. They are friendly, totally funny and charming and happily willing to share their nuggets of information. Of course this is only if you express interest in hearing. If you want a more casual experience they got jokes on jokes. I loved that they went diving for scallops WITH US. Not only was it helpful to watch their technique they were able to supplement our lack of findings...Let's put it this way: I found 19 total in all of 3 hours...they found 19 in all of 10 minutes. PROFESSIONALS. After the tour they went to work cleaning our treasured scallops. Thanks to the team effort we ended up with about 60 scallops! (They had them cleaned and bagged for us in all of 7 minutes, freaking crazy.) This was a phenomenal experience and I will be gushing about it for a long time now. This review is late to be posted, but I cannot say enough great things about Captain Nick and First Mate Jayce. We planned to take our 12-year old daughters to Disney for their birthday in August, but the pandemic ruined that idea. So keeping social distancing in mind, we settled on a fishing charter instead. We did the full day charter and Capt. Nick had us on the fish all day. My oldest by a minute twin was reeling in a fish before anyone else even got a hook in the water. Sea Trout, Mangrove Snapper, Sea Bass, Flounder, Gag Grouper - it seemed like we caught everything but a Tarpon and a Red Snapper! We had a little Manta Ray, a little Cobia, a large Manta Ray, Lizard Fish (2), and even a sponge! Capt. Nick knew right where the fish were, what bait/lures to use - everything was right on point! I wish I had pictures, but we were really too busy catching fish to take pictures! It was the BEST day of memory making for our girls' birthday. They cleaned all the fish for us and sent us home with more fish than we ever expected to have. I just cannot day enough about how great of a experience it was for everyone. This fishing charter was the best decision we made during our visit to Crystal River. You literally just show up (with some sunscreen and drinks for the onboard cooler) and you are all set! The vessel is clean and safe. All the bait and tackle you need is provided. You just sit back and relax until you get to the honey hole! We had a great time fishing with Capt. Jayce. He was professional, prepared and knowledgeable. I truly believe any level of fishing experience will be able to catch fish with Capt. Jayce. He is an excellent, patient teacher and his love for the sport truly shines through. The mission for this charter was to finally catch the elusive red fish. Within minutes of tossing our line in the water my mission was accomplished. I could have seriously gone home after that - but thanks to Capt. Jayce we spent the rest of the day catching more reds, speckled trout, gag grouper and even a puffer fish (yeah not epic but I was excited as I'd never caught one before!) We had a great experience with High Octane today. Nick was friendly and knowledgeable. He baited the hooks, handled the fish, and everything. After a ride out to the open water, we had our first fish in five minutes! We caught a variety of fish including redfish, trout, a puffer fish (threw it back!), and more.
