I was a big fan of News Talk 1230 AM WMFR in High Point in the mid-to-late 90s. I liked the station…read moreso much that - I kid you not - I created a fan page for the radio station on GeoCities. Incredible, I know. I've tried searching for it over the years, hoping it'd be archived somewhere, but have had no luck. It might be gone forever. Max Meeks, the station's popular and longtime host of Max in the Morning, was our family's neighbor for many years. He lived on Cantering Road. The times he saw us, he'd always mention how we were neighbors. He was such a nice guy. I liked the sound of him rustling numbers (if I recall correctly) in his cigar box to pick the day's birthday winner. I know I submitted my name and perhaps others for a chance to win, but I don't think any of us ever won. My parents still have the WMFR Cookbook at the house. Listeners could submit recipes for inclusion in the cookbook. I submitted at least one or two recipes from my mom. One of those recipes was for one of my favorite dishes of hers, Thai chicken larb. Mmm... Max and other WMFR staff had a cookbook signing at Parker's News Stand downtown (https://www.yelp.com/biz/parkers-news-stand-high-point). It was at that time I realized I was not in WMFR's primary demographic. Their demographic was much older. I think Max or one of his staff made that comment to me and it stuck with me. I was just a teenager then. Along with Max, two other WMFR personalities I remember were news director Larry Craven and broadcaster Wes Jones. I remember Larry Craven would cover local news live from the Radio Building in downtown High Point. I remember listening to him talk about my high school, High Point Central High School, getting intentionally set on fire the morning it happened in March 1997 (https://greensboro.com/17-year-old-pleads-guilty-to-setting-school-on-fire/article_283b8014-0578-5f6c-894b-60865f98c599.html). Larry was also the PA announcer at Simeon Stadium for Central football games. I thought that was cool. Wes Jones had The Wes Jones Show among other programs he hosted or co-hosted. My dad considered advertising his business on WMFR and Wes recorded some sample ads for him. We received the samples on cassette tape and, as a fan of the station, I was thoroughly entertained listening to Wes promote my dad's business in such a professional-sounding manner. He pronounced our last name wrong, but it was funny. Sadly, the three guys I remember best from WMFR are no longer with us: RIP, Larry Craven (69). Born February 18, 1945. We are excited in finally getting an FM frequency 24 hours a day. it is non-directional station which gets to provide the information and entertainment that this station deserves,,, in about another 60 days WDSL Radio will be 54 years old providing information to the interest of public of Davie County and surrounding area's. I also like to thank the staff of WDSL Radio as well as the management for providing the many hours it took to get the FM Station up and running. the station is currently playing classic country, bluegrass and southern gospel music and preaching which is doing well. I hope soon that this station will soon do many things like adding Ears radio to the Weekend In The Country Show with Steve Boger as a new affiliate. that has shown how powerful a 5,000 watt has become.When the CEO of Ears radio was really impressed with steve's show all over the world via the internet, it really means something like having more affiliates being added in the future.
