I hate doing this. We had such a magical time our previous trip. This time our server was lacking luster. I felt like more of a bother to her than a valued guest. We waited a long time to order drinks, then waited a long time to order food, then refills etc. We were the ONLY table in the dining room...(there were some regulars at the bar). There were admittedly a couple of power outages during our experience which may have deterred the attention of our server. It seemed the staff were on edge during them. Hub got chicken tenders. Well, what can you expect from 'bar and grill" chicken tenders, but frozen store bought stuff. Dino nuggets. The fries were crispy, seasoned and yummy. I ordered a baked potato and added chili and sour cream (both at a premium). It was warm and hit the spot. Didn't care for the sotol old fashioned. My hub described it perfectly. Said it tasted like a carpet from an old office building where there is a hint of cigarette smoke.

The food was exceptionally bland. Even the "award winning" chili had almost no flavor. We got a cup of chili, cheese enchiladas, and chicken fried steak. The CFS was the highlight of the meal, but everything else was the whitest version of Mexican food I have ever seen. :( on. Positive note - our drinks were great!

    Chili dog plate

Recommended by one of the guides on my float trip in Terlingua. Ordered her suggestion - chili dog plate. Two chili dogs and fries. Great price $14. Chili was salty. Service was okay. Atmosphere was okay would have liked to have sat outside but that was not open during the day when I was there. Probably opens up at night when they get a bar crowd.

Basically Chili Mac...was the side portion and that's what was left.

Jenn was our waitress and the maker of the amazing award winning chili! Was a Monday, so was very slow. The place was welcoming, although a dog was barking as we entered, but all in all, was a good comforting place.

Not too many choices in these parts for lunch. Last time we tried Chili Pepper with decent results. This time we came with friends who had never been to the area. It's Terlingua time! Once we had signal coming out of the national park I checked what was open and headed to High Sierra. Simple digs with a bar, stage, and a few tables occupied. I still wondering who Gary Coleman graces the walls near the bathrooms? Small menu focused mostly on Tex-Mex and requisite burgers. We arrived around 2pm and they were already running low on food. Chips and loaded queso to start. Nice flavors and our waitress Jenn who's chili is featured on the menu was quick with drink and chip refills. I think everyone has a chili recipe here as it's home to a huge chili cook off every year. Backstory for me; I've been coming to the area since my teens. Funny story about that cookoff time. Back in the day it attracted so many state troopers all the locals didn't drive because their registrations had been expired for years. Most of us ordered what was left of the fajita option and one order of enchiladas. Solid food that literally tastes better because you are where you are; middle of nowhere in the high desert next to glorious scenery. It's almost like your own mammas kitchen; doesn't get much better that homemade. Hey! A cigarette machine! They didn't have my brand...

High Sierra cured me after a long day in the park! The onion rings are some of the best I've EVER had. The burger absolutely healed me. The queso was bomb. Jamie was an excellent server! She was attentive and informative. She checked on us often and provided anything we asked for quickly. Ambiance was classic and comfortable dive bar. Good vibes and good music. The watermelon margarita was awesome

Great food but kinda felt like I was being held hostage because service isn't on top of a lot.

It is easily the heartbeat of the area, offering a dining experience that perfectly captures the eclectic, rugged, and friendly spirit of West Texas. Be prepared this place is popular for a reason. Wait times can easily reach the two-hour mark, but don't let that deter you. The trick is to put your name in first, then immediately pivot to "vacation mode." Grab a drink and an appetizer from the bar and head outside. The porch and the surrounding area become a lively social hub where locals and tourists mix seamlessly. The atmosphere is what truly sets Starlight apart. While we were waiting for our table, a couple of locals claimed the large bench right outside and broke into a spontaneous, spirited rendition of The Jungle Book theme songs! It was pure magic. My kids were completely enthralled by the performance, which turned a long wait into one of the highlights of our trip. It gave my husband and me the perfect window to relax with our drinks and soak in the desert air. The food lived up to the hype of the setting: Smoked Brisket Queso: This is an absolute must-order. It's rich, smoky, and the perfect fuel for a Ghost Town evening. Prickly Pear Margarita: Vibrant, delicious, and refreshing it's the quintessential West Texas cocktail. The Main Course: We ordered a variety of kid-friendly items and the Brisket Tacos. While everything we ate was delicious, be aware that their famous Texas Mesquite Smoked Brisket is in high demand they had unfortunately run out by the time we were seated, so get there early if that's your primary goal! The Starlight Theater isn't just a restaurant; it's an event. Between the incredible live local interactions, the "only-in-Terlingua" scenery, and the solid food and drink, it is a 5-star experience. Just remember: arrive early, bring your patience, and keep an ear out for the music!

We also tried the Antelope fingers (kind of like chicken fingers). We weren't a fan. They weren't gamey at all, but were pretty tough to chew. There was live music that night so that's a plus!

We stopped in after a long day at Big Bend, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our whole trip. Let's start with the beef nachos. I've had a lot of nachos in my life, but these are on another level. The beef was incredibly flavorful--seasoned perfectly and piled on generously. Each chip was individually loaded instead of just dumping toppings on top, so every single bite had that perfect balance of crispy chip, melty cheese, tender beef, and fresh toppings. Do not skip these. I'm still thinking about them days later. For my main, I went with the shredded beef sandwich, and wow. The beef was so tender it practically fell apart, slow-cooked to perfection and piled high on what I think was a fresh-baked bun. It came with these seasoned fries that were crispy and well-salted. My partner got the enchiladas (also great), but honestly I couldn't stop stealing bites of my own sandwich. The view from the patio is ridiculous--you're looking straight at the Chisos Mountains while eating some of the best food in West Texas. The cocktail menu is legit too; the mezcal margarita paired perfectly with everything. Service was friendly and laid-back, exactly the vibe you want in Terlingua. A heads-up: it gets busy around sunset, so either show up early or be prepared to wait a bit. Totally worth it though. If you're in the Big Bend area, do yourself a favor and eat here. Get the beef nachos. Get the shredded beef sandwich. Thank me later.
