We came for late lunch. We didn't stay the night. We drove in from BBNP looking to try the famous chili. I got my chili! Wasn't the best I've ever had . My husband's meal was very good. The guacamole came from fresh avocados. Could have used a little more mashing, for my liking. The mixed drink contained premixed concoctions. It was still drinkable. This establishment offers plenty of outdoor seating, counter/bar seating, and indoor seating. It is equipped with a stage for live music. Overall, great service and ambiance. read more

12 years later and The High Sierra ain't what she used to be. The lady friend and I came in for an early dinner since The Starlight wasn't opening until 5, and we were starving from our full day in the park. I ordered a cup of chili and some Buffalo wings, and the lady friend ordered some chicken tacos. The chili was good, apparently they use the recipe from the award-winning cookout each year. The wings were weird; the flats were good and crispy but the drumettes were flimsy. The ladyfriend's tacos were horrible. They seemed to use the bagged Tyson precooked chicken breast strips that were all rubbery in texture. They gave here just a few pieces of cilantro and onion on top. These were not street tacos and needed some toppings to mask the crappy meat. I still gave them 3 stars because it's Terlingua, the beer was cold, the chili was good and the waiter was very nice. read more

I hate doing this. We had such a magical time our previous trip. This time our server was lacking luster. I felt like more of a bother to her than a valued guest. We waited a long time to order drinks, then waited a long time to order food, then refills etc. We were the ONLY table in the dining room...(there were some regulars at the bar). There were admittedly a couple of power outages during our experience which may have deterred the attention of our server. It seemed the staff were on edge during them. Hub got chicken tenders. Well, what can you expect from 'bar and grill" chicken tenders, but frozen store bought stuff. Dino nuggets. The fries were crispy, seasoned and yummy. I ordered a baked potato and added chili and sour cream (both at a premium). It was warm and hit the spot. Didn't care for the sotol old fashioned. My hub described it perfectly. Said it tasted like a carpet from an old office building where there is a hint of cigarette smoke. read more

Took forever for waitress to come to the table. She was talking and talking at every table, then went outside and never came back. Finally got margaritas and they were very good. Tried to order some enchiladas. They don't have them any more! Even though they had fajita chicken, soft tacos and tostadas, they could not put fajita chicken in the tacos or tostadas! You could get a fajita chicken salad for $20!! This is really just a bar with bar food. Not Mexican food! There was no live music on Cinco de Mayo! They had nice lights and nice decor, but that was about it! read more

The food was exceptionally bland. Even the "award winning" chili had almost no flavor. We got a cup of chili, cheese enchiladas, and chicken fried steak. Terlingua is a small village near Big Bend. There aren't a lot of options and they rely on tourism. So one might expect the service and food to be subpar because they don't necessarily expect you to return and they know you don't have too many choices. That being said High Sierra did not disappoint. The server (who just may have been the owner) named Jen was very sweet. We got chips and queso. Very good. A little kick. My husband enjoyed his lemonade and cheese enchiladas. Since it was Terlingua I opted for Jen's special recipe chili. It was spicy but in a good way. Delicious. And no beans as Texas chili should be. She told me she was state fair champion. I can see why. I also got a prickly pear margarita. I don't usually drink but prickly pear and tequila seemed like the local flavors to enjoy. Refreshing and not skimpy on the tequila. I would recommend a special trip here if you're in the area. They also have both indoor and outdoor seating and sometimes live music although not when we were there. read more

This is a horrible place. My utensils were greasy . The food is unbearable bad and made both of us ill. We had the chicken tacos's with tomatillo sauce. I ate two of the tacos and my nie e could only manage to eat 1. We also ordered the chips and gauc. The guac was not freshly made and tasted very much like the store bought variety. Because I had more of the tacos than my niece I became very ill later in the night from food poisoning. Not recommended. If possible go to Venga's. read more

The service was great BUT the food was overpriced and the enchilada plate was disgusting!!! My son had a kids hot dog plate/w fries, he enjoyed it. My older son and husband had the 6 wings and no sides, then I had the enchiladas plate and they used very old recooked meat and rice!! The tortillas were microwaved and they put a tablespoon of sauce. The corn tortillas chips were old- it tasted like the bag was left open overnight. All of this costed 102.00 without the tip. It was so disappointing to have to go out for the first time on this trip and have to have this experience. Not too many choices in these parts for lunch. Last time we tried Chili Pepper with decent results. This time we came with friends who had never been to the area. It's Terlingua time! Once we had signal coming out of the national park I checked what was open and headed to High Sierra. Simple digs with a bar, stage, and a few tables occupied. I still wondering who Gary Coleman graces the walls near the bathrooms? Small menu focused mostly on Tex-Mex and requisite burgers. We arrived around 2pm and they were already running low on food. Chips and loaded queso to start. Nice flavors and our waitress Jenn who's chili is featured on the menu was quick with drink and chip refills. I think everyone has a chili recipe here as it's home to a huge chili cook off every year. Backstory for me; I've been coming to the area since my teens. Funny story about that cookoff time. Back in the day it attracted so many state troopers all the locals didn't drive because their registrations had been expired for years. Most of us ordered what was left of the fajita option and one order of enchiladas. Solid food that literally tastes better because you are where you are; middle of nowhere in the high desert next to glorious scenery. I have a lot to say, and I'm not sure where to begin ...so please be patient. In the last two years, my wife and I have been to two dozen national parks - an average of one every month. From California to Virginia, from the U.P. (the Upper Peninsula of Michigan) to the Texas/Mexico border - we've been around! We've stayed at five-star resorts, we've reveled in ghost town motels, and we've seen and done everything in between. Terlingua is one of my most emotional experiences, because I am drawn to the night sky; seeing a colorful and robust Milky Way with the naked eye is a first I will never forget. But the time driving TO here, and the downtime in between the parks and the sky, is a time when I most value relaxation - and, for me, relaxation includes good food, good drinks, and good service. I already know I'm a tourist - I don't need that fact exacerbated by the unenthused waitress who begrudgingly serves my wife and me. We say please and thank you, we're gonna tip well - we don't need to palpably discern that you're dead inside; I also drove six or eight or 12 hours - a watered-down drink is NOT akin to satiation. If you want the best of ALL worlds, forget the drama and fake reviews of other places - I PROMISE you, you will be more than happy at High Sierra; bonus points if your waitress is Jen! Again, my wife and I have extensively traveled in the last two years, absorbing experiences as lavish as others were remote; we HIGHLY value quality and substance over mere appearance. If you decide to puts around and try somewhere else before you go to High Sierra, I don't condemn you; just come here afterward and admit your mistake. read more

High Sierra cured me after a long day in the park! The onion rings are some of the best I've EVER had. The burger absolutely healed me. The queso was bomb. Jamie was an excellent server! Food - 3 Service - 4 Atmosphere - 3.5 Located in Terlingua Ghost Town about sums it up. Restaurants with good food and service are few and far between. That being said, the menu choices my wife and I chose were good (chili mac, and tostados). Service was also OK, although I saw several tables wait quite a while for their food to come out (ours came out in an average amount of time). The seating was a bit helter-skelter (sit anywhere you want and they'll find you) but the staff we encountered were friendly. Out waiter was not only friendly, but an interesting guy (sells solar panels by day, and an astrophotographer by night when he isn't being a waiter). As for the atmoshphere, it had a typical bar vibe, with a live music stage and an upstairs balcony overlooking the stage. Acceptably clean, but the 30 second rule would need to be shortened to about 5. I would go back if ever in that area again (which could be another 70 years) because there aren't many other alternatives. read more

As always a quick checkup from my fellow Yelpers helps us make our decisions quickly. This restaurant is attached to a motel. They have a nice covered patio and indoor seating as well. The indoor section also has a bar and looks like a live music area. One waiter was working that day and he was friendly but didn't overdue it either. He grabbed our drink order quickly then came to get our lunch order. I ordered the three tacos. Pretty impressed when they came out. I didn't expect much but was quite surprised by hem. Pretty darn tasty and not expensive. I gambled with the Tres Leches cake. The waiter was honest and told me it wasn't homemade, but he still recommended it. I'm glad he did. It was pretty good. Honestly man, vibes. It was no terlingua chili cook off winner, but it was a great warm meal and nice break from the ten hours of car peanuts. We stayed in the area during Thanksgiving weekend. We were shocked to find a bar in the area, especially one that was open super late the night before Thanksgiving. I try to manage my expectations when visiting places this remote. However, we were very impressed by their margs and craft beer selection. We got Prickly Pear margs which were more on par with Austin pricing ($12/marg) but all the other margs were $7 which is super reasonable. The prickly pear marg hit the spot. Service was super quick and our bartender would run over anytime we were looking to get another drink. Some dude was playing live music for everyone and he was pretty darn good! read more

Greeted by a snooty host, I said hi to him first, no welcoming from him. Our server was really nice but the food was not all that great. The 6oz of fajitas were sad and pathetic. They were out of two mainly ordered dishes on a Friday evening, not well prepared for a busy "spring break" tourist town. Queso looked like Elmer's glue consistency. At least my Dos X's beer in a bottle was cold on a hot evening. I would have had a better tasting dinner had I just cooked my own meal at camp. We sat outside which was nice with a warm breeze. The tables could have easily sat another group of people, we even offered our other half of the table to guests but that upset the unfriendly host, telling us it would "back up their kitchen". The inside was very dark and small. When we were leaving, a family was pulling into the parking lot and asked if the food was good, I said no, go to the next little taco shop or eat at camp, avoid this disaster of a restaurant and the unfriendly old man host. read more

My husband and I ended up coming here for thanksgiving this year. The Turkey plate this year was delicious and the portions were huge for the price. We were very lucky to get one of the last full plates that night and they had to switch to a reduced normal menu around 7:30 pm so if you are planning on celebrating thanksgiving here make sure to arrive early to ensure getting a thanksgiving meal. The only reason I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the wine I got tasted a lot like vinegar so I suspect it was old and opened too long. read more

We decided to make a quick stop for a drink here while en route to another dining establishment for dinner. We ordered a prickly pear wine margarita, a glass of merlot, and an order of chips and salsa. Nothing was what we'd call good. The chips were borderline stale and unheated... and at $6 decidedly overpriced. The merlot was, per my husband, old box wine. My margarita was barely acceptable. While we can't comment on the quality of food served here, I'd suggest you avoid the place for drinks. Service was good, Wifi strong, and A/C indoors was great... so these are plusses in this desert environment in the middle of nowhere. read more

After hiking for hours under the sun - the window trail - and a long ride through the scenic road to Santa Elena canyon we were famished and super tired. High Sierra one of the few places open for dinner on a Monday took care of our hunger. Good simple food. I had the chili and order salsa and guacamole (used the a few chips as a spoon since I do not do carbs). Salsa picante just right, devoured the guacamole, and the chili, with no beans, was very tasty. My husband had the street brisket tacos which came with rice and res beans (an extra point for them no refried beans). He says, as he is currently chewing with pleasure, "hit the spot, did the job, serves its purpose". Tacos served with corn tortillas which are finely ground that are so soft they could pass as flour tortilla "very soft". 2 Topo Chico's and we are happy campers. Service was good. Harley was good, polite and very apologetic for being the only server. We both enjoyed the food here. Although... they need to work on their "chips and salsa". the salsa was a thin liquid and did not go well with tortilla chips. We were starving after a long day of hiking and 4-wheel drive trails. We had made our way to Terlingua a tad early and were waiting to get the venison plate at Starlight. Having time to kill after completing our shopping, we stopped in High Sierra for an appetizer and a drink. We both had a good beverage and enjoyed a basket of chips with white queso.
