i've been conflicted about posting this review, but regardless of the fact that i got a refund for my botched tattoo, I think future clients have a right to know about my experience. For years, i've been collecting moths by different artists in different places i've lived/ traveled. They're all of a similar size (4-6 inches across) and on my spine. They usually take about 2-3.5 hours to complete. I'm familiar with the pain involved, and I know what good results look like. On that note, I have never been screwed over the way I was at High Tide. I was planning to visit Juneau for folk fest, and started researching tattoo artists there. I liked Lexi's Smith's work as it was shown in IG, so I scheduled the appointment months in advance. I sent her reference pics and she said she could do it. Based around her schedule, we made the appointment for noon on my last day in town. I would be flying out that night around 10pm, so we had somewhat limited time. When I got into the appointment, from the beginning, I should've seen the red flags and steered clear. Firstly, when I saw Lexi's initial design, I asked for a couple of small modifications. she seemed to struggle to make them on the digital design platform that she was using. Eventually, she said she would just freehand the differences I asked for. She applied the stencil and it looked pretty good, so we started the session. (I guess here is where I should clarify that I have social anxiety and struggle to stand up for myself at times, which is not Lexi or High Tide's fault. Still, that does not excuse the results I got). Once we started, the pain was like literally nothing i've experienced in a tattoo parlor before. My legs went numb and i could barely stand up after the first hour. We took short breaks but I sat about 50-55 minutes per hours. I tried to power through it, so didn't tap out. Since the tattoo is on my middle back, I wasn't able to see what Lexi was doing for the vast majority of the session. The session ultimately lasted about 5 hours, which is FAR longer than I've sat for much more detailed tattoos. Towards the end of the session, Lexi mentioned that her carpal tunnel was acting up (i'm guessing that's why the session took so long?) She wanted to try to push through and finish the tattoo, which in retrospect was definitely a mistake, but as i said I get socially anxious at times and didn't have the courage to tell her to stop. Eventually, my skin was so inflamed that Lexi said we would have to stop. She claimed the piece was "finished," but it looks nothing like the reference. I think her hands might have been shaking, so she she started adding design elements that weren't in the stencil. The color work just looks rushed. I left on the verge of tears once I saw the results. She still asked for the full price ($500USD). which I sent her via Venmo because at that point, I was too exhausted to navigate an argument. This made it ironically my most expensive tattoo, although I have others that look much better. It's healed now and it's... not great. The linework is uneven, and the colors don't blend together or look as vibrant as my other tattoos. To their credit, when I reached back out with my complaints I received a refund of $400 out of the $500 I paid. BUT not before being ghosted for days-- then I threatened to post a negative review and got refund QUICKLY. Lexi should have known better than to charge $500 for something that looks so cheap. She even posted it to her Insta with a heading saying that the "lighting wasn't her friend" as if the lighting is why this tattoo looks subpar. Also, despite the $400 refund, I never received an apology, from Lexi or from her mentor, Dave. I will now have to invest significantly into getting it covered up or reviewed. Lexi's one day of bad work ruined my body possibly permanently. To potential clients-- please don't make my same mistake! Steer clear of High Tide and invest in a higher quality shop elsewhere. read more

My experiences with this shop have been super positive and the work is absolutely fabulous. Dave did a memorial peice for me turned out fabulous. Passing thru Juneau from Hawaii and as a collector I couldn't pass up getting something. Lucky I caught them on their Saturday walk in sessions. Not many shop options but I can tell you that you don't need to look any further. This is not a tourist chop shop. Trust me, seen tons of them in Hawaii and other busy port towns. Portfolios were filled with excellent representations of the artist abilities. I always like that their aren't a ton of flash books for people to go thru; true artist occupy this shop. Shop is clean, employees friendly and accommodating. I say this from being in many shops around the world so it's relative to what you have experienced. This shop is solid. Shop girl was very friendly (a looker for sure ) and all the artist have excellent customer service; not so typical for a shop. Dave blasted a sick monkey's fist for me as a small filler piece. Excellent work with clean lines. He was fast and efficient. Very pleased. Don't hesitate to check them out but if you are a rookie; be patient. Getting work done is a process that takes time and commitment. Most definitely visit them again if I roll thru. read more

I recently had Dave Lang conceptualize and design an original Killer Whale tattoo for me. It was a large piece of work that covered my entire right forearm and lower bicep. We did it in two back to back sessions. It came out great! I knew he was gifted and efficient, but this was a lot of work done within 36 hours. Dave does a great job! If you like traditional American tattoo he has a solid background. That's what I like because they are the most solid, best looking tattoo that holds up the longest. Dave can tattoo any style well, but if you like old school American style you will not be disappointed. Walk in to High Tide and look on the wall. Most of it is Dave's own flash art work. If you want a quality tattoo go to a quality tattoo artist. Juneau is lucky to have a solid tattoo artist work locally. It saves me money on airfare going down south to support my ink habit. So I would have gone 1 star or even 0 stars but I wanted to make sure it didn't get filtered, so suffice it to say 2 stars is extremely generous. I was forewarned by some locals about this establishment as having terrible overpriced work. I made a big error in that I disregarded the warnings and went there anyway. I think there was some divine intervention in that Dave's horrible attitude made me walk at the last minute. In fact, the reason I walked was because he decided that my deposit "was gone" and I needed to give him a new one. I love the snotty attitudes of some of these tattoo guys, they think they are so special and act condescending. Guess what pal? My friends outside of Juneau are tattoo artists a hundred times better than you can ever aspire to be. Anyways, please don't make the same mistake as I did and disregard the warnings and God forbid end up with some sloppy overpriced ink. read more

jack gave me a terrible ,sloppy tattoo, and the worst customer experience ever. it was way overpriced as well. a simple black outline was $80.00 and its not much bigger than a quarter. Don't go there. Your cover ups can be avoided by flying to anchorage or Seattle and you will pay less! read more
