I then came across Devonshire Montessori Preschool in Mission Hills which became a total game changer. Every day and week, I would notice both of my kids becoming more practical and knowledgable in their daily lives. Our daughter 1st attended a different preschool and had a terrible experience. We were nervous about her attending a new school but very quickly we realized we'd made the right choice. The teachers are very sweet, caring, nurturing and supportive. Despite her negative experience elsewhere she quickly adjusted and loved Devonshire Montessori. Every day upon pick up the teachers give me an update on her day. Ms. Altagracia, Ms. Carmen, Ms. Silvia and Ms. Corina are all wonderful. They're always very helpful and willing to share with me tips on how to reinforce the day's lessons at home. The school is clean and organized. They offer the students different types of activities to keep them engaged. My daughter had Spanish and dance classes every week. She loves her teachers and has formed beautiful friendships. If she weren't going to an elementary school we'd keep her there longer. read more

My husband and I can't thank the staff here for giving the most amazing three years of school in our child's life. My son started at this school for the summer program and he absolutely loves it (with good reason). The owner, director, and all the teachers are super friendly and welcome you with a smile every morning. Inside the classrooms there are lots of manipulatives and hands-on activities for the children to play with. Outdoors, there are tons of toys, cars, and activities for the kids to do with plenty of shade! This being his first school experience, I was a bit nervous and hesitant. But after a few weeks, l've realized that we made a great choice! My son runs in the classroom in the morning and doesn't want to leave when we pick him up. My son was here for about 15 months and if we could we'd keep him here longer. We absolutely love the school, the teachers, music and language programs. Ms. Corina is amazing, communicates well and really knows the students. They have so many fun activities that my son loved going every day. Ms. Silvia is wonderful and kind who gives us the sweetest updates. They helped him potty train in less than a week. (We did a lot of home prep) So lucky to have found this school. We had a rough start somewhere else and this place couldnt have felt safer. They truly care for the children. I will start off by saying I WAS so happy to have found this preschool for my 2 year old son. My child is an only child at home and we felt it was very important to have him be around other children and adults and of course learn; also, we are also a working family holding full time jobs. I was so nervous leaving my little guy there on his first day, but he quickly adjusted which made me feel much better about our decision. Sadly, my son has now been un-enrolled after 8 months of attendance. I write this review after going thru all the emotions... from feeling rejected, to super sad ,and now honestly a bit angry. However, I am not writing this review out of spite. I have cooled down and have really given our situation some thought. Like many two year learning to communicate and effectively express their emotions; my child is stubborn and cries when things are not his way but overall, he's a great, sweet, and smart kid.... but he does need and want his space. They don't allow you to come and stay even a bit, so you can watch the interaction between the kids so I had to take the teachers word on the events that happened. Unfortunately, my child's reaction to things happening was to bite. He bit other kids, this was not a daily thing but it did happen on several occasions... now, I know the school has a strict biting policy (3 bites, you're out) to ensure the safety of the other kids which I understand and respect. Maybe he needed more supervision to help with this. I get it though, I would not like other kids biting my child but I do understand this happens and it is a behavior that can be corrected if addressed properly. My child came home bruised (small bruises), and scratched at times and when I was told it happened by other kids I understood... I didn't like it but I know these things are going to happen with children. I do admit he did learn during his time at this school... he knows his ABC's counts to 20, knows his shapes and colors, knows his full name, and can spell his first name; with some assistance of course. The school definitely helped him but also my husband and I are both very, very hands on with him in regards to his learning development, so it was certainly not just the school. The school decided to un-enroll my old son from their program because they/we were unable to get thru this behavior and correct it. I received a SAME DAY CALL to inform me of his un-enrollment. It was so hard to leave him at school on his first day, he built relationships with children and teachers there and a routine that we all had to work on. It's heartbreaking to think that now I have to take my son somewhere else and go thru this all over again, that has got to be scary and confusing for him. I also feel that I was very accepting and receptive to whatever the school asked of us at all times so it was a good staff-parent partnership on our end; but leaving a full time working family without care for their child does not seem like much of a partnership to me. I would have appreciated them telling me my son couldn't attend the following month or something like that instead of his un-enrollment being effective that same day. Not to mention, it is very difficult to find a school with open spots at this time. I know they are not babysitters by any means, they are teachers but working parents need to make arrangements for child care and it is not cool to be left hanging this way. I know they feel very strongly about this policy; I guess them sticking to their rule is most important to them. I have been touring and interviewing other schools at the moment and have brought up this issue, they have all told me this is common and they would be happy to help us work on this with our child, none have this "policy" and they tell me it's like they gave up on him at his last school... I feel this way too. I will now gladly take my child to a preschool that has knowledgeable, supportive, and loving teachers. Things happen for a reason, I did visit with a school that I fell in love with and am looking forward to my child attending. I won't let him stay where people give up on him. Both my littles have been attending since 2.5 (my oldest had a small break in between to attend public school; but we decided to return). My oldest has now been here for almost 3 years and my youngest for about a year or so. Both of my girls absolutely love it. I can see how much they have changed in personality, academics etc. The teachers are always so helpful and take the children's needs into consideration. Open communication between educators and parents is extremely important to me as a parent and they make sure to communicate. The kids have fun, make friendships, learn new skills, grow academically, get acquainted with a structured routine much like a daily school routine and they learn some independence. My daughter has attended this school for a little over 2 years now. She started when she was 2.5yr old and now I'm the 4/5 year old class. This is the 3rd preschool that she has attended. The first one was a Montessori in-home which followed LAUSD school schedule so it didn't work out for us. The 2nd one was a traditional play based preschool which she only stayed for a month because it was too chaotic and overwhelmed her. She would literally cried at every drop off and pick up. As a parent, it's already hard trusting your child in someone else's care but seeing them so sad going to school each day just breaks your heart. After calling and visiting several places, so glad we found Devonshire Montessori! The teachers are all very loving and great with the kids. My daughter settled in nicely within the first week. I also love the Montessori system because it gives kids more structure and focuses on individual learning so each kid is taught at their own pace. Not only has she become a little social butterfly who knows how to express her thoughts clearly, she has also improved significantly on an academic level. She's able to write her alphabets, do basic math problems, and read basic words. The best part is that she looks forward to going to school to see her teachers and friends and is always happy when I pick her up. Extra bonus is that they have other teachers coming in weekly to work with the children on Spanish, singing, and dancing. For the price, this place is a total gem! read more

When I was in search for a good day care for my two toddlers I would pass by Montessori and never got their number but when I found out how they were mistreating my kids and other kids at the license day care were they were attending for close to two years. I decided to stop by and get Montessori's number. When I call to get information about their hours, policies, etc. I couldn't be happier. I got the applications the very next day, drop them off and Mrs. Romany called me tell me that they had space for both my kids. Since day one my kids loves being there. They would get out of the care and run to the hate. In my eyes it was a good sign. As I got to meet all the teachers ,and honestly I don't have a favorite one because ALL of them are extraordinary with the kids. My boys love all of them. They get excited when they see them every morning. My boys have been there for almost two years now. My oldest knows how to read 3 letter words, addition and subtraction, they have a computer class. In the afternoon they do activities, projects and before COVID even gimnastics . They know how to keep the kids busy and learning at the same time. For me it's if you have to pay for daycare/ babysitting why not have them at a place where they can be learning at the same time? The staff at Devonshire Montessori has been great and very supportive. They are very caring with my kids health and education. The staff has been great on communicating with parents of how their kids are doing and what kids need to work on. During the pandemic, the staff has been great on protecting themselves and the students. I have seen how the staff prepares the students to the next level. My daughter transition from Montessori to kinder garden and I wished I would have kept her at Montessori another year. Personal Experience: My daughter has been attending this school for 2 years now, she started in their younger class and now has moved up with the older kids. She has not only developed educationally but psychologically as well. She has become comfortable in a learning environment and she has developed social skills. Teachers/Instructors: Teachers are very nice and seem to have the appropriate knowledge to mold young minds. There are many people involved when caring for the kids, each child gets adequate attention. Cost: This center has been very affordable. Not only do they educate kids, but also provide daycare if needed (depends what you need, the cost varies). In addition, they provide hot meals on a daily basis. Hot lunch has been wonderful for us because my child was not wanting to eat at home, so eating with her friends has sparked better eating habits (hot lunch is also an additional cost). Our daughter has improved so much, they really focus on each child's individual needs while informing parents on what we can do at home to continuously help our child succeed. I am utterly grateful to Miss Silvia and Miss Corina for being so patient and supportive with our little one. Throughout this pandemic the staff has gone above and beyond to adapt to the changes that have kept students and staff safe and healthy. The monthly bulletins keep parents well informed and reminded of the precautions we need to continue to take during this wacky time. The entire campus is clean and organized. Actually, they close at 5 pm after COVID-19. This is an old school and has been known for its name but it is not a true Montessori school. They only have a few Montessori teaching materials and they are aged materials. Instead of teaching Montessori materials, the teachers do teach simple math and English letters. They do let kids watch TV occasionally such as Friday or they want themselves to take a break. But they will tell you that the bad weather is the cause. Last week, they have a teacher who is tested with COVID-19 positive so the school closes all week. All of sudden, the working parents need to find childcare on their own with very short notice. Even though they have a very strict policy for COVID-19 prevention, one of their teachers are still carried a positive COVID-19 virus. read more

Our kids attended this school from 2014 to 2018. We are beyond pleased with their progress and reading abilities. Each started at 2nd grade reading levels upon entering kindergarten. Sadly our teacher left to pursue her doctorate at Harvard but the other staff was generally very happy and welcoming. My daughter has attended Devonshire Montessori for the past 2 years. Prior to this, she had minimal intellectual and social development at her "early learning center"/ daycare facility. The teachers are very caring and conscientious. My daughters have been attending this school since they were both 2 years old. When my older child first started, I was worried about her ability to speak because she wasn't saying much at the time. Within a few weeks of her being at this school, her vocabulary improved tremendously. The teachers have been nothing but attentive and communicative to us about our children's needs. I had my son attend this school for 2 years before he transitioned to first grade. With the outstanding staff's commitment in helping the children learn, my son is now in magnet 1st grade at his new school. With my sons success at this school it was a no brainer to enroll my daughter at Devonshire. My daughter has now been there for 2 years and has another year before she will have to move on to another school. Combined with both of my children being here for the past 3 years, I have had the pleasure of seeing my children grow in their academics and social skills. The curriculum that the school has for the children is awesome. They have the students working on their math, phonics, writing, and fine motor skills (ie. coloring and writing). All the staff at Devonshire are very dedicated to the children and are very patient and caring. When you pick up your child at the end of your day, the staff will keep you updated on your child's behavior and academic activity for the day. This school has been around since my 18 & 20 year old daughters attended preschool/kindergarten. They both started reading at 4. I now have a 5 year old son that attends this school 15 years later and things are still top notch. I couldn't believe most of the teachers are still there!! Mrs. Ramany and Ms. Corina are very professional and super great with the kids. This is a great school to start your kids off with a solid foundation for the rest of their school years. Both my girls are straight A students to which I owe Devonshire Montessori for. It may not be the fanciest school out there but definitely a school with teachers that care!! My husband and I visited many daycares before enrolling our son. When we drove up to this one my husband didn't even want to stop the car! I agree it looked bad, but they were already expecting us. The old and ill equipped playground is the first thing you see. It doesn't have shade and the sun hits it all day. So either the kids have full sun exposure or they don't play much outdoors. Which leads me to the indoors. The kinder room was not too bad, but wasn't good either. It didn't have children's work displayed etc so that in itself was a bad sign. The 2-3 year olds rooms were small. In fact the 2 year olds room was tiny. I don't see how 12 children could be in there comfortably. There were no visible learning centers or materials. It was really dark and dingy. I felt awful knowing that there were children that actually spent their days at this daycare center. It is located in a working class neighborhood, so maybe the parents can't afford better or they don't know what else is out there. I really can't say anything about the tuition because we didn't get that information. The tour guide (not the director because she was out) was very uninterested and unprofessional. She said they were already expecting 2 children to fill the remaining spaces, so that's probably why we had such a quick and uninformative tour. She literally opened the doors to the rooms and had us look without saying much. She spoke because we asked questions. It was VERY different from all the other tours we had been on (even the ones at other "not so great"centers). Even if they were full, I would think they'd still want to impress people so they might come back if there was ever an opening. I also didn't see how this center was following the Montessori school ideal. I think they just have it in their name to sound impressive. As an elementary school teacher who has taught kinder I knew what I was looking for in an early childhood education classroom: a welcoming and nurturing room environment and staff. This place didn't have that, but luckily we found it elsewhere. So please make sure you visit many places before you choose where your child will spend their day. Our children deserve great quality child care regardless of location or parental income. read more

So my son started to attend this school late May of this year. So he's only been their for maybe a month if that. My son is 4 years old, very active, loves to play with other children, loves all school activities. He loves school all together. But yes he is a very active little boy. He needs attention. But instead of giving him attention, they say he's a problem everyday and they do nothing positive for him. Every day I would get a little letter from the teacher saying every little thing he did wrong through out the day and how bad he was. Now, when my son is out of school, he listens to me and his father very well. He plays with his younger brother, great. These teachers at this facility are very negative towards the children. They don't really interact with the children. They just "watch" them. Literally. That is all they will do with your children. Simply watch them. They do not teach them, they do not interact with them. They make them only interact with each other. The director of this school is only looking to collect get checks from the parents to pay for her new Mercedes Benz. When we talked to this director about everything she handed me a letter saying that they could not meet his physical, mental and emotional needs and can no longer attend the school. My son was heartbroken. He had no idea what was going on. He didn't know he was doing anything wrong while at school. He thought he was just being himself and making new friends. My son is harmless. He's just a little boy with a lot of energy that this school couldn't handle. So they say they can't meet his needs. So pretty much they can't do they're job. Simple as that. I don't recommend this school to anyone who actually cares about their child's education. Because at this school they don't receive any education. So if you'd like just a babysitter, then this place would be perfect for your child. I'm very happy that all this came to light before my son was there any longer. I will be complaining about this location to every single board of education that I possibly can and to every single financial assistance program that I can to eliminate this school from any list of recommendations for children to attend. The director Romany Sagadevan was very rude to my husband and I. We asked her to please explain to our son why he can no longer attend the school, but she just turned her back to our son and told us to leave. Ridiculous. Very unprofessional. Please do not send your children to this school. Montessori is supposed to be an outstanding school. But they don't live up to that expectation. They don't even deserve the one star I gave them. When I decided to send my child to the Montessori, I was initially terrified, because I didn't know how he would react to being away from me. To my surprise, he adjusted so well and loves attending. I believe that the reason for this is because the teachers and staff are so caring, helpful and really love what they do. They are also great about communicating with the parents. Both of my children started attending Devonshire Montessori since they were 3 years old. Since they started school my children were very happy and so were we as parents. The curriculum of this school is amazing. When they start working with Phonics, Writing and Math, children really excel due to Teacher's commitment and one on one attention to each child. All School Staff are very patient, caring, and dedicated to every child. School Staff always keep you updated of your child's progress and behavior. When my older son graduated from this school his transition to his new school, was great due to the knowledge he already had from this school.
