City Skyline

In the mood for a spectacular sunset and skyline backdrop? Highland Park is a must! We opted to spread out a blanket and people-watch, while others were having picnics and enjoying the crisp late-summer evening and Hoosier sunset. Thankfully, we got lucky and had great lights for the night, and the neighborhood was also super cute, walking along the newer energy-efficient builds. Again, if you're in the mood for a skyline sunset - this is it!

This is THE place to go for views of the Indy skyline. It's a small park, but it's up on a hill, so you can soak in views for miles. It's located in a neighborhood and there's only street parking surrounding the park; there's no parking lot. There's a playground and a covered patio area with picnic tables too. The grass was really overgrown when I visited, so hopefully it's maintained soon. This is a fun picnic spot and I'm sure it's pretty at sunset!

Highland is close to King Dough, so it's the perfect place for a pizza picnic!

Highland Park is a beautiful combination of feeling quiet and secluded while also getting the best view of downtown. Street parking is easy and free and the Holy Cross neighborhood is really quiet with so many beautiful houses around. There's a nice playground, shelters, picnic tables, and lots of green space and sidewalks to walk through. It is always ranked as one of the best sunset spots in Indy, so it can get crowded at that time. But still worth it and there's plenty of room to spread out. It's always nicely maintained. And right nearby is King Dough, so grab a pizza and come to the park for a sunset picnic!

It's more of just a neighborhood park, but the skyline of downtown Indy is amazing from here! We had fun having a picnic and playing on the playground.

The view of downtown from Highland Park. Incredible!

The best views of the city- for real. This is such an underrated park! A sunset picnic on the hill overlooking the city is very romantic and calming. There is lots of space here to enjoy- I've most recently been here with a volleyball and some friends and we played volleyball for a while on an open green space. There were children playing, picnics happening, and it was such an overall nice spring day. A little bit out of the way of downtown, but still walkable from Mass Ave if you are down for it. Surrounded by a nice neighborhood, we felt very safe here.

I'm so glad I finally got to come during sunset! This is just a regular park but the view of the Indy skyline was gorgeous! I look forward to visiting more when it is warmer and to be able to have a picnic here!

The view is what brought me to this park. I had been seeing several people on Instagram posing for pictures with the skyline of Indianapolis in the background and wanted to see it for myself. This park is a small neighborhood park with a paved walkway through the area, a small playground and a pergola for picnics. There are some nice, mature trees that offer shade on a hot summer's day. The surrounding houses are absolutely beautiful, a great little area to relax without leaving the city.

Giant tree on the east end of the park

Location, location, location! That's what makes this park hold its value. It has a hill in the center of the park that offers one of the best views of downtown available from the east side, i.e. for watching the sunset or fireworks. Other than that, the park does have some nice paths to walk, plenty of large trees for shade, a playground with swings, and a shelter with a grill. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a dedicated parking lot (street parking is free if you can find it.) It also has no restroom facilities or running water fountains, so plan accordingly. The park seemed fairly well maintained, but I hear it gets crowded during celebrations. Review #512

After a long hard day of working for the man (I do that a lot), I decided to take the bike out for a ride to Indy's little known gems. The first stop, Highland Park. If you've never been here before, this park sits just east of I-65 on E New York, right on the outskirts of Holy Cross The park isn't vary large, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in the view. Make sure you walk all the way up to the TOP of the knoll for extra eye candy, especially near sunset. Take a snack, take a picture, and take another snack, because you'll be up there a while munching on that eye candy. Oh and if you want to watch fireworks for the 4th of July, bring your boxing gloves because I'll be there first and you'll have to fight me for my spot:)

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... WHAT!? This exists? Yes. This exists. This is worth the tax price of admission to living in a city -- all of it. Kudos to fellow Elite Squad-ers Jamison H & Ben H for opening my dreary bourbon-soaked 'burbanite eyes to this park. Burbs be gone, frolicking through bubbles from a bubble machine in Highland Park be had! Since moving into the neighborhood this has quickly become a near-daily place of peace, respite & dog walking. Considering it's the closest thing we have to a viewpoint for downtown... this is where you should go to ponder the profundities of how our city is changing / growing / memorizing the skyline (yeah, you should). In my time in other cities (read: San Francisco & Denver) this park's equivalent would be jam packed with lunchers, vagrants, bands, free cinema, frolf, dogs, mini-ponies, lovers, life-hating hipsters that have a grand ole time in the park (it's like parks bring the hearts out of hipsters and I like that), friends doing grass angels, friends doing grass, folks barbecuing and reunion-ing, a tamale lady, a pot brownie guy and cause to take champagne to the park at 2am, where cops & kids can get along. It's time our city grows up and starts congregating together, all the time. Highland Park is the prime place to do such. Maybe now that this park is listed on Yelp more folks will find it and realize they should probably live downtown so they can have this. Picnic tables, park benches, trees, knolls, paved paths, a playground... a view... ahem... the best view. All that's missing is you.

Wow! What an amazing revitalization effort for the Holy Cross community and park. I haven't driven East of I-70 underpass on New York, with exception of Cash and Carry, it seems like since the late 80's. I actually stopped and questioned if I was in the same place. This gorgeous neighborhood with new and remodeled homes, nicely landscaped yards and pristine park is so appealing. Parking is a slight drawback when visiting Highland Park. I had to park on the street in front of a private residence which always makes me uneasy, especially today, with so little parking available for residences. Residential parking was all I immediately saw available though. The park has a walking path, small playground area, and one pavilion with lots of large, shady trees to enjoy on this hot, sunny day. Several folks were enjoying lunch under a tree, another power walking while I enjoyed my pie on top of the 2nd highest Indy area, as Brittany mentioned, in Indianapolis. The downtown view is great and as others have mentioned a perfect spot to watch fireworks, grab lunch, play with the kids or enjoy a beautiful day.

The park is also very accommodating, with covered shelters that are great for relaxing or hosting small gatherings, along with conveniently located restrooms. Covered picnic tables and restrooms are nearby so the kids can picnic and use the restrooms. All the facilities are super clean. Trails (suitable for bikes or walking) surround a lovely pond. Natural prairie grasses were attracting many birds. Several beautiful swans were maneuvering around the melted ice. Benches were available for bird watching. An interesting small amphitheater was built into a small hill overlooking the pond. The spot would be a perfect place for a poetry reading or bird watching lecture. Several pavilions are available for family or club picnic gatherings. Plenty of parking for cars or bikes is available. There is no admission fee to use the facilities.

It is a very modern park that is lined with the rubbery surface that most of the new parks are using. It has a half basketball court with an adjustable rim. The court is in great shape and has a bench along the baseline for spectators to sit and watch. You will find a very nice paved walking/jogging trail that goes around the perimeter of the park, as well as trails leading to the park from nearby neighborhoods. The bathroom facility at the park is very well maintained and is one of the better ones that I have seen in a park. They serviced the restrooms and trash while I was there. The park has two picnic shelters with tables under it and one has a couple of grills just outside of it. The playground is awesome. It has top-notch modern equipment. One side of the playground area has a very nice large jungle gym with a couple of slides, one of which is a spiral slide. There is also a bank of swings with traditional and ADA swings, a spinning net sphere, a pull up bar, and an interactive light game. This side is intended for 5 and older, but my 3 year old spent most of his time over here. On the other side is play equipment for smaller kids. There is a bank of toddler swings, a small jungle gym with a tunnel and slides, a couple of see-saws, a modern merry-go-round, and an expression swing. In between both area is some picnic tables and percussion musical instruments. Both play areas have benches on one side of it for parents to sit and on the other side (outer perimeter) are some workout equipment between some more benches, under a nice shade bearing awning. The workout equipment is intended for those over 14 years old. The equipment happens to face the respective playgrounds, so parents can get their workout on while keeping an eye on their littles. On final feature of the park is its green space. There is a patch of grass that can be used for playing catch, soccer, football, or flying a kite. It can also be used for working out or having a picnic. The only downfall of this space is that it is like in like a little crater. So, it gets very soggy after rain and snowfall and takes a while to dry. I really like this park. My littles and I spent about 2 hours here. It is not very big, spanning 5 acres, but still has a lot to do. This is definitely a destination park and was well worth the 40 minute ride for me to get here.

When I stopped on Friday morning to walk the dog, I was shocked to see the parking lot (which holds 60+ cars) almost full. They have 8 pickle-ball courts and they were full with a line of people waiting for a court The pangs of the balls were pretty loud and disrupted any peacefulness that the park has to offer. There is even a set of bleachers to watch the pickle-ball games. Anyway, the park does have an amazing playscape, perhaps the best in the Indy area. There are multiple climbing structures, swings for all abilities, a merry go round type structure and more. There is soft matting under the structures to keep the kids safe. Kids were having a blast. In addition, there is a colorful and awesome splash pad. There are nice benches, some covered, to sit and watch the kids. The park also has a walking trail into a wooded area, which is not paved, just gravel. There is some natural prairie vegetation. Trees have been recently planted. There are a nice set of restrooms including a family restroom. I also saw a small pavilion with picnic tables. There are sprinklers, pouring buckets, sprayers, waterfalls and lots more. It is very nice and open from 9am to 8pm. The playground is modern and is Divided into zones for children aged 2 to 5 and 5 to 12. It is laid on a combination of artificial turf and rubberized, mud-free, surfacing. The playground features a swing bank with traditional and ADA swings, a net cone merry go round, a slide on artificial turf covered hills and a small jungle gym structure with a couple of slides and bridges. The highlight of the playground though is the towering jungle gym with a bunch of tall slides, ropes, and bridges. It is one of the first things that you will see when you arrive at the park. Additional amenities at the park include a water fountain that is capable of filling bottles, a restroom facility and a patch of green space to play catch or just throw a blanket down and relax, hiking trails that lead to and from downtown Bargersville. It is a small, but very well designed park. I will admit, that it does get packed during nice weather, no school days, especially on weekends. I really like this park. This is one of the best parks I've visited in central Indiana, and if you look at my Yelp review…read morehistory, you'll see I've visited a lot of parks! This lady knows her parks, mmmkay? Hummel Park in Plainfield is impressive for many reasons: it's huge (205 acres!), it has multiple playgrounds (like 4!), it has a splash pad, it has a baseball field and basketball courts, it has a great area to creek stomp with lots of shallow places for kids to wade, it has paved walking trails, it has a bridge, it has a amphitheater, it has clean restrooms, and a lot more that I'm forgetting. Also, it's really clean and well-taken-care-of. People with kids definitely need to visit this park. Like I said, there are four different playgrounds, so you could spend a lot of time here going from playground to another. The biggest playground area is located in the southeast part of the park. This playground includes a vintage twirly slide, but also a more modern playground structure with multiple slides, tunnels, bridges, monkey bars, poles to slide down and rope ladders to climb up. The playground is accessible to kids of all abilities, and includes a ramp entrance into the playground structure. This part of the park also has swings, including a saucer swing, as well as a separate playground for toddlers, and a big sand box. The splash pad is located in this area of the park, too. It's a great size for toddlers. I wouldn't visit this park just for the splash pad, because there are other parks in the area with bigger splash pads, but it's nice that there's one here and that it's so close to the playground. There is another playground near the performing arts center, which includes a toddler playground and a playground for bigger kids. A short walk away from this playground is a nature playground, with manufactured boulders and rope webs that kids can climb and explore. Paved trails offer an easy walk or stroll. As you meander through the park, you'll probably cross over a bridge that's suspended over White Lick Creek, which runs through the middle of this park, and it flows from the north part of the park to the south part. There are five small lakes within Hummel Park, including Blue Heron Lake. Hummel Park is also a great place to go creek stomping, because the creek bed includes many shallow areas where kids can wade in the water. I've heard that the sledding hill at Hummel Park is amazing, so I'll have to visit in the winter with my kids.

I guess you can park along the road as well. This park runs along Old State Road 37, has a canal that runs parallel to it and has a lot to offer. They have a couple of very nice shelters with a bunch of picnic tables, a fireplace, and a grill outside of them. They are really nice and can be reserved. They also have a couple of playgrounds in the park. There is a small playground by the larger pavilion with a swing bank with toddler, traditional and ADA swings. The equipment sits on a bed of wood chips, has a large paved trail that runs through it, and picnic tables nearby. The second playground area is across the street and much larger. It has a large red play structure, a bank of saucer swings, a sit and spin, a small playhouse, a pyramid net climber, a bank of traditional and ADA swings and small play structure for little kids. The equipment is in great shape. The large play structure has a bunch of gnarly slides, some bridges, a pebble bridge, and can be accessed from a large bridge. The small play structure just has a couple of canopies, a bridge, and a slide. It is much less exciting than its larger counterpart. The area has picnic tables and a bunch of benches around for caregivers to sit while their little's play. It is lined mostly with wood chips, but has some patches of cement and rubber surfacing mixed in. There is a bathroom facility over in the area as well. You will also find a sand volleyball court here at the park. It is a decent court and I do not know how much use it gets. The park features paved hiking/walking nature trails that are pretty nice. It is a scenic park and has a peaceful feel about it (the further you get away from the main road, the better), and is very scenic and picturesque. Along the main road is a portion of the trail that also parallels the canal, where you will find a bunch of picnic tables that are visible from the road. The park is home to a couple of desolate baseball fields that look abandoned and is closed off. There is a modest parking lot attached to the fields, but it is gated and closed off like the fields. The fields have potential and appear to have been an awesome spot to play ball at one point. Anyway, this is a very nice, low key park that has a lot to offer. It is well maintained, picturesque and soothing. I can not think of many changes I would suggest for this park other than more parking. You could easily spend a half a day here and not even know it. I recommend spending some time here and checking this place out.
