There are 2 tall towers with 2 large slides each, on each end.
    Angela J.

As my granddaughters grow, they have become much more interested in the largest playground at Hummel Park. It appears to be the newest playground equipment there, with I believe 6 slides of varying heights and skill levels of climbing to reach. My toddler granddaughters call this the "slide park," and they absolutely love it. I wish I could get more pictures, but keeping after a 2 and 3 year old both makes it hard to stop and take photos sometimes. I love that there are many different climbing pieces to get up to the various platforms in the ginormous jungle gym. It's listed as being for children aged 2-7, with some supervision. My 3 year old granddaughter has mastered the entire main towers/jungle gym portion, but the backside climbers and twirling sections are obviously for taller children. My 2 year old granddaughter needs help with most other climbing sections, but there are several easy entry points and one ramp. There is also a large balancing/bouncy balance beam and spinning seats that are a lot of fun. The entire section is surrounded by a fence with only one way to enter/exit. I absolutely love that feature, since I'm managing a pair of toddlers. This section alone keeps my granddaughters entertained for well over an hour and they always fight leaving. Great park!

Wonderful park for the family, couples, bicyclists, runners, walkers, events, meetings, or just meets. It's a huge place with multiple entrances depending on what you're there to do. The playground area is huge. There are shelters and the bathroom buildings are always clean. There are lots of offerings for outdoor activities as well, tennis, basketball, paved path around park, and loads of parking.

    plenty of playground equipment

I cannot wait to go back to this park! It has so many amenities on the east side of the park and great hiking trails on the west. I didn't even get to appreciate all the colors that come in spring or fall, just the drab color of winter, and I still loved this place. Okay, so there is lots of paved parking with multiple lots so that you can get to the shelters, or the playground, or the splash park without having lots of walking. But if you feel like walking or biking, there are paved paths that appear to be mostly dry and if they aren't long enough for you, they are connected to trails that lead all around Plainfield! After checking out the east side which was clean and seemed to be in great condition (yes to water fountains and restrooms), I crossed over a bridge which spans White Lick Creek and had the option of two trails: The Blue Heron Trail that leads south passed the Blue Heron Lake (about a mile long); or the Cottonwood Path which heads north across another bridge to loop through the trees (about a quarter of a mile). Both trails were paved with a dividing line to encourage people to stay on their side and reduce bike & pedestrian collisions. The Blue Heron trail can be accessed from the county road to the south of the park as a starting point as well as from crossing the bridge from inside the park. I did notice one spot near one of the many small lakes/ponds that the trail pavement was a little slippery from an overspill from the heavy rains recently left a light smear of mud. Not bad, but it was probably very slippery a day earlier. I also liked that the trail had markers every tenth of a mile. There were also a couple location guides in the park that showed the general layout of the park. I snapped a quick photo and used it on the trail since there were a couple offshoot trails that weren't leading any place I was interested in going. There is a third trail which loops around the east side called the Red Maple Path and from the pictures I've seen on Yelp, there are lots of spectacularly colorful trees that warrant a stop in autumn. I'll be back. Review #612

Busy day at the park but we were able to splash at the splash pad, play on the new playground equipment and even found a few geocaches. Fun day at the park! The splash pad is a bit muddy lol so watch your step!

Beautiful, well maintained park! This place is especially exceptional for bike riders, as the entire park is smoothly paved. They also host an outdoor summer concert series that is really enjoyable. So really, stop watching TV and go explore Hummel Park! Go!

The park is a large garden composed of many smaller gardens such as the Memorial Veterans Garden, and the Enabling Garden. The center piece of the park is a triple gazebo that is very picturesque and can be rented. Even though it is not park of the park, I found another picturesque spot right off of it, a historic iron truss bridge. It spans the White Lick Creek and runs into the White Lick Creek Trail. The park is home to a veterans memorial and a statue that depicts a man holding a child, with two older children playing with a dog at his feet. The sculpture titled "a Celebration of Family values", is meant to signify The Dura builders family dedication to the town of Plainfield. You will also find many dedications and memorials in this park by some of the trees and in areas like the small fountain near the exit and the sundial sculpture across from the gazebos. The park has nice paths that run through it and are connected to a larger network of trails such as the aforementioned White Lick Creek Trail. This is a nice refection park that has a calming peace about it and is very soothing, even though it is located right off of a main thoroughfare. It does not have a shortage of benches. Spend a few hours exploring all the trails to find your favorite route throughout Plainfield. Vandalia Trail replaced the old Vandalia railroad line. As a child my husband played on and around the Vandalia tracks and I love hearing his childhood memories. Most of the 5 trails have points of interest along the way that can distract you. Vandalia Trail has a great bridge at the intersection of White Lick Trail close to the baseball diamonds at Franklin Park. Just across the bridge is a shaded seating area which is great to meet up with friends and a map of the trails if you get turned around. I often find myself stopping to watch a ballgame at Franklin Park on my way to White Lick Trail. The almost 5 mile trail is a comfortable walk, jog or ride with a few hilly areas. The N. East Street and Aquatic Center hill is probably the steepest but still manageable for most. Much of the trail is shaded with sunlight streaming through the trees and I find very peaceful. You will encounter a few road crossings or under passes, and even though well marked stay vigilante. Vandalia Trail connects with White Lick Trail which takes you to Main St., a.ka. Right next to that area is a bigger jungles gym for older kids (it did not intimidate my 2 year old though). It has a barn yard them and has a bunch of slides and bridges and stairs. In that area you will also find a maze, sit and spins, a bank of traditional settings and rocking animals. The shelter, which can be rented, is right by the larger kid play area and has picnic tables under it and a grill right outside of it. The shelter also has a wood over inside of it. It is a very nice shelter. There are 8 very nice pickle ball courts here. Four on each side, divided by a semi-covered sitting/waiting/spectating area. The courts were very busy. The park is home to 4 lighted baseball fields. The fields are very nice and they were having some little league girls games going on while I was there. Good luck finding a parking spot when they have baseball or softball going on. There were a good amount of spots near the playground area though. Even though they are not officially part of the park, there a some tennis courts, that belong to Plainfield Community Middle School, which borders the backside of the park. They were open while I was there and are pretty well maintained. This park has pockets of green space that can be used to toss a ball, have a picnic, run around, or have a football/soccer game. And as an added bonus, even though the park does not have a designated trail, it does have some pretty good paved paths that can be put together to get a decent walk or run in. This is not your newest park, but it is a very good traditional park with a lot of amenities. It is a solid park that the little ones will enjoy for hours.

There are seven shelters of various sizes and well as playground equipment near some of them. There are two full size basketball courts or four half courts depending on how you visualize them. There are four complete and fenced in baseball diamonds each equipped with full size backstops to protect spectators and they are well maintained. There are at least five, probably more, soccer fields with goals for community practicing and leagues. Shelter No. 1 is located just to the right of the main entrance and has a permanent volleyball net plus horseshoe pits and some swings. The basketball courts are nearest this shelter and a short walk. Shelter No. 2 is the largest with a large parking lot and is located just to the left of the main entrance. It features the largest and main playground. Shelter No. 4 is on the other side of this huge playground and is located very near the equipment. Shelter No. 3 is also located towards the front of the park, but smaller and has a small single piece of playground equipment with a slide next to the shelter. Shelter No. 6 has its own playground equipment but is within a short walk to the main playground visible across an internal road. There is parking for a half dozen vehicles. Shelter No. 5 looks like a gazebo and is the smallest of the seven but a bit more secluded from all the shelters towards the front of the park. There is parking here for a half dozen vehicles. Shelter No. 7 is double the size of an ordinary shelter and located in the back next to the soccer fields. You can see the wooden bridge leading to the rustic hiking trails in the woods. There are permanent restroom facilities located adjacent to this shelter. There is plenty of marked parking spaces here along the road as well as a small parking lot in front of the wooden bridge. If you like to walk or hike, I recommend parking in the lot by the bridge in the back and starting from there. There is also another open soccer field beyond the trails I have used for kite flying.

I do find that sometimes Avon can be a bit slow to clear brush from the trails, a fact that can be difficult for wheelchair users.
