Marott Park is formally known as "Marott Woods Nature Preserve." Established in 1987 following the…read moredonation of land by Indianapolis businessman George Marott (think Marott's Shoes and what is now Marott Apartments) and dedicated to his wife, Marott is an 102-acre nature preserve unassumingly located right at 74th and College Avenue. Admit it. You've often driven by it and wondered. The preserve protects some of Indy's oldest remnant forest and native wildflowers. For years, it was known as Marott Park and had signage to support the name. However, it was Friends of Marott Woods that helped spearhead the name change to more accurately reflect the nature of the preserve and goals for it. It's important to note that because Marott Woods is an actual state nature preserve, it's protected under state law. According to the Friends website, "protecting the habitat takes precedent over our personal whims. Because of this, activities like off-path hiking, biking, fires, and off-leash animals are all illegal under state law." Marott Woods has a relatively small area for parking, picnic tables, and hills that are somewhat cleared yet definitely natural as opposed to paved. I definitely would not consider the trails wheelchair friendly, though there are areas where a wheelchair can access and still appreciate the preserve. Nature Preserves are, of course, far more natural than a public use park and while some effort is made for accessibility the focus is on natural preservation. There are some very cool spots that I can technically get to, but not fully utilize. As others have noted, Marott Woods doesn't look like much from the street, but it becomes amazing and it's pretty awesome to think that it's basically smack dab in the middle of a residential area. I do like that the name has changed. I think it creates more realistic expectations of what this space is and how it should be used. This is definitely one of Indy's northside gems and pretty easy to reach from Broad Ripple and Nora. I'm not quite ready to call it a destination spot, but if you've found yourself curious about it I definitely recommend stopping in and enjoying the remarkable natural setting.

There are always plenty of parking spots, and the trail is super easy to walk since it's all paved. One of our favorite things to do is open up the Merlin app while we walk, it's a great area for birding and it's cool to hear all the different kinds of birds in the trees. There is also a little river creek that runs right along the path, and the sound of the water is so lovely and relaxing. The water looks very clear, and we've seen people and dogs getting in, though we aren't 100% sure how clean it is. Still, it's a beautiful, peaceful spot and definitely worth a visit! This very historical pool is still gorgeous and the fact they want to tear it down is unsettling. I have just never heard of putting a lazy river in front of a real river, but that's just me. Every time I go here I see somebody I know and it is such a great neighborhood area. It definitely is the best pool in town. The bathrooms need work as well as the concrete area but there's plenty of handicap parking and there is a dog park there as well. There's a nice walk along the river and many many playground activities available. They even have a soccer or rugby area as well as a tennis court. This truly is a jam in the city with White River and all its glory.

Starkey Park is one of the oldest parks in Zionsville. The park is mostly natural forest that is…read morebordered by Eagle Creek on the southeast and housing developments on the west. The park is managed by the Zionsville Parks & Recreation center. There are seven short trails running through hills and dense forest within the park. The trails are less than one mile long each. The trails are ideal for nature lovers, birdwatching, hiking and dog walking. The forest offers cover for many interesting species of birds. In some parts, the trails are rugged and not easily navigated. Many native wild flowers bloom within the park. Unfortunately, the trails are not suitable for strollers or wheels chairs (except for a few short segments) because they are dirt paths. But the Rail Trail that runs adjacent to the park is totally accessible and overlooks the park on the eastern side. There is a parking area on the northwest corner or other parking areas along the rail trail.

Nothing to write home about. The field itself is decent and can be used for flying a kite, playing football, playing soccer, or playing catch. There is an unpaved jogging/walking/running trail that looks like it is a quarter of a mile that goes around the field. There is also a have court basketball goal that is ok. The goal is in good shape, but the court itself could use some TLC. Still a decent spot to make it rain though. There is a covered pavilion with a grill and picnic tables under it. It was well maintained as well as the fields. There is a small playground on the park's grounds. There you will find some older model swings, a see-saw and a jungle gym with a slide. A more accurate rating would be 3.5 stars, but I went with the higher end. It is a nice park and there were a few people there while I was. Some were on the playground, a few were running the trail and there was a guy doing pitching practice on the field. I admit that there are better parks in the area, but this serves it purpose and is a decent alternative.

I don't know -- but that sounds like a good guess, doesn't it? Anyway, because the park is a bit elevated, you can get a great view of the downtown Indianapolis cityscape. It's really cool. The park itself is small and is more of a neighborhood park. It has a small playground with a small play structure. It has slides, some bars to climb, and some swings. The play structure is definitely more appropriate for kids ages 5 and under. I think older kids would get bored with it quickly. I would not go out of my way to visit this park just to play at the playground, but I would visit to sit at one of the picnic benches to eat and enjoy the view. Parking is along the street -- there isn't a designated parking lot. There also weren't any restrooms or water fountains that I saw.

Fall Park is a beautiful retreat in the heart of Pendleton with a rich history. According to…read morehistorical plaques, indigenous people found refuse in the beautiful natural falls. Early settlers moved to the area in 1818 and harnessed the energy of the falls for milling and other uses. A cannery and quarry thrived on the banks of the beautiful creek. After which the area became a neglected dumping grounds. In 1919, a local business man had the vision to clean up the property and turn it into a park. Today, the park is beautiful with a massive modern playground, restroom facility, picnic pavilions, paths along the creek and naturally terraced falls. The quarry was turned into a lovely little pond complete with a folk art lighthouse. A quiet war memorial stands on the north side of the pond. I enjoyed my walk through the manicured grounds with gardens and shaded by large trees. Plenty of parking areas meander through the park. Fishing is permitted in the stream. The park is now host to annual events. This is a fabulous community park with beautiful natural elements, great facilities and a little history.

There are waking trails and ponds as well. On one visit we found a creek with cute waterfalls. You could spend an entire day here. Also super close to the Pendleton downtown area. You can walk to Ohanalulu ice cream, INitaly, Edicta39 and more if you're looking for food while you play.

Sarah T. Bolton Park is named after the woman largely considered the first lady of Hoosier poetry…read more(I bet you can guess what her name was!). Originally known as Beech Bank, the park was purchased by the city from the Bolton family 1930 and is a nearly 32-acre park that includes picnic areas, a one-acre dog park, play equipment, shelters, restroom facilities, athletic facilities/courts, a creek, and it has a sort of winding topography that makes it Beech Grove's most popular park. It is also recognized as a certified wildlife habitat. In 2012, the baseball diamond was named after Richard "Dick" Templin, a lifelong Beech Grove resident and longtime city council member who managed Beech Grove's American Legion Baseball Team for over 35 years and had scouted for the Philadelphia Phillies. He's a member of the Beech Grove Little League Hall of Fame. I bet you didn't even know that Beech Grove Little League has a Hall of Fame, did you? The park has ample parking and is paved throughout. Generally, it's wheelchair friendly. The paths/sidewalks do have gentle inclines, though I've never had any difficulty navigating. Bolton herself was a poet and women's rights activist whose most known poems were "Indiana" and "Paddle Your Own Canoe." She wasn't well known outside Indiana, though she was quite popular in Indiana. She is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery. There is also a veterans war memorial in Bolton Park that is also wheelchair friendly, though it also has a bit of an uneven surface. Geocachers should also note that Bolton Park has a couple of geocaches within its boundaries, though one, in particular, is definitely a bit tricky to access due to the park's popularity!
