This review is specifically for the wonderful front desk lady who took my call (I'm so sorry I didn't catch your name!). I called in a bit panicked because my cat had eaten a big piece of leek I had accidentally left in the sink after making soup. A quick Google search told me that leeks are highly toxic to cats, and I was expecting the worst. I immediately jumped on Yelp to find an emergency animal hospital and luckily, Highlands Animal Care was the first place that came up--and I'm so glad it did. The woman who answered the phone was incredibly kind, professional, and calm. She listened to my situation without judgment, put me on a brief hold to speak with not one, but two doctors who just happened to be there at the time, and then returned to let me know that the amount my cat ingested likely wasn't enough to be harmful. She reassured me without making me feel like I needed to rush in, pay for a consultation, or purchase unnecessary services. That level of honesty and care is so rare these days, and I am beyond grateful. Her helpfulness and compassion immediately earned my trust, and I will 100% be coming here for all my future pet care needs. Thank you again for your kindness--you truly made a difference for Aries(cat) and I that day!

This is my second review for this amazing hospital. I am a vet assistant with a mobile company so I need a place to bring my own fur babies when procedures are needed. My French bulldog, Ferdinand, needed a dental cleaning with an oral mass removal as well as a subcutaneous mass removal. I had a bad experience last year at another clinic so I was anxious about this procedure. Highlands again blew me away with their level of care. Dr. Hussey listened to all of my concerns and we built a treatment plan together. The day of the procedure I felt relaxed and knew my guy would be well taken care of because Hailey, her technician, was so communicative and confident. I dropped him off around 8am and was able to pick him up at 1:30pm- fastest I've ever been able to do a pick up. Ferdy was quickly back to his ornery, opinionated self. He now has his quirky, cute smile back. I couldn't be happier!. Pricing was reasonable and worth every penny. Thank you, Dr Hussey and Hailey!!

    Two paws up!

I really like this place ... they're nice and sweet and probably honest. I appreciate how they tell you how expensive everything is going to be before to do the procedure

Unfortunately my cat broke his hind left tibia this past summer. It was an overwhelming situation. The staff at highlands animal care were so compassionate and helpful. They took really great care of him.

Very nice quiet exam and waiting area for nervous babies

I've been looking for a steady vet for a long time since my favorite vet retired. I swear we went to every vet near my area (downtown) and they either were terrible, or they would move! So I saw highlands on yelp and decided to bite the bullet and drive the 30-40 minutes based on all the good reviews. I'd say it was worth it. The staff is amazing. From the front desk to the assistants to the vets everyone is really competent and kind. My baby feels like the king of the world when he's there he told me)! The waiting room is fantastic. There are really nice private or private-ish places to sit so if you have a reactive dog at all it's literally no problem. Some of the rooms are set up like a living room so if your dog is nervous they will feel more comfy. My sweet baby angel was having a recurring UTI that I had been treating at an emergency clinic, with no success. Finally I see some progress at Horizon with different meds that they recommended. I'm also very pleased that they offer some holistic treatments and at home or even tele health visits. Totally worth the drive if you don't live close.

Although our reason for coming to Highlands Animal Care was heartbreaking as we had to put down our sweet old boy, Dougie, every aspect of the experience was gentle, empathetic, and caring. I've had to say goodbye to family pets many times in my life and I have never felt more cared for than this time. The staff at Highlands is so kind and empathetic, we never felt rushed or pressured to get through the process or as if we were inconveniencing a busy facility. The staff brought him a doggie snack tray to enjoy before the procedure and we were able to hold him in our arms and take our time saying goodbye. Dougie's last moments were full of love and care. We had our young kids with us and I was so worried the experience would be traumatizing but it was the furthest thing from. Our kids were able to say goodbye to their beloved boy while holding him in their laps and not once did they feel scared for him. They both commented on how peaceful and happy he seemed in his last moments. From the bottom of all our hearts, thank you to the entire staff at Highlands for being so gentle with us and bringing so much peace during such a difficult experience.

Belikin had a great, first visit at 4 mths old. Thank you all for your kindness and caring of all of our babies.

They are so kind, helpful, patient and the prices are fair. I don't feel nickel and dimed or rushed like I have in so many other vets. They have tele help partner available too which has helped me in times of emergency, when the vet was closed or in the middle of the night. I really appreciate having found this office for help with my babies. Thank you!

I don't usually leave reviews, but I feel like I need to share my experience…read more I brought my puppy in because she was shaking her ears a lot and it seemed like something was irritating them. I also mentioned her coughing/gagging symptoms during the visit. The doctor we saw was Dr. Ledezma. We came in thinking it would be a simple ear cleaning, but she ended up being prescribed medication and additional ear treatment. After they put it on her at the clinic, her ears actually got worse and it looked like some irritation may have affected the skin on her ears, so I didn't even use it and had to take her to another vet for a different opinion and to have everything re-checked and cleaned again. For her other symptoms, I was told it was likely related to her recent spay surgery. Later on, another clinic immediately identified it as kennel cough just by examining her throat. I also want to mention she is a shelter puppy, which I did tell them. Knowing that, I would've expected kennel cough to at least be considered as a possibility, since it is very common in shelter dogs, but that wasn't brought up during the visit. During the exam, I also didn't feel very confident in the explanation given, and the overall visit felt unclear. Overall, I ended up spending close to $200 and still had to seek additional care elsewhere shortly after. I did reach out directly before leaving a review to try and resolve things first. They did offer a refund for the medication, which I appreciate, but that was the only adjustment offered. I was still asked to call in to complete the refund due to my overnight work schedule, and they only offered to refund the medication, not the ear-related charges (swab, cleaning, and exam), which made up most of the visit cost. For context, the breakdown was roughly: exam fee ($70), ear swab ($40+), ear cleaning ($40+), and medication ($40+). I've brought my other dog to this clinic before and had good experiences, which is why I initially chose to bring my puppy here. The vet assistants here was are always so nice I can say that. Having a new shelter puppy is already stressful, and this experience added unnecessary stress and additional vet visits that likely could have been avoided. I wish I had paid closer attention to the more mixed reviews beforehand. I'm sharing this just so other pet owners can make a more informed decision. I will not reach out again as this whole situation was just a lot and I gave them an opportunity to resolve this with a few emails back and forth.

It has taken me a long time to post this review (I actually wrote it over a year and a half ago),…read morebecause I still struggle with the emotional loss and the guilt of knowing I took our dogs to Cadence Animal Hospital and blindly trusted them with our pets. Almost two years later, I'm finally ready to share this. I want to start by saying that for the entire time my husband and I have had our two dogs (about 10 years since my husband's dog came home as a rescue and over 8 years since my dog came home as a tiny puppy) they had always been super healthy and showed absolutely no signs of illness, strange behaviors, severe disability or anything like that until March 27, 2024. March 27, 2024 was the day we picked our dogs up from a one-night boarding stay at Cadence Animal Hospital. We dropped them off on March 26 for vaccines, baths, and boarding with zero concerns. They had stayed there many times before without issue, so I didn't think anything of it. We picked them up the next day with two completely different dogs with alarmingly different states of mind and health. Our bigger, older dog came back with a severe limp and struggled a great deal more physically. Our smaller, younger dog (who was normally active, assertive, energetic, and fearless) came back acting like he was perpetually anxious and on edge. Both dogs had trouble eating immediately after that stay. At the time, we chalked it up to them recovering from their vaccines, and assumed our older dog was just getting older and maybe couldn't handle boarding as well anymore. But between March and May, both dogs continued to struggle. Though there was some small improvement, they were never the same as before that March 26-27 stay. Before that visit, both of them would excitedly gobble up their food in under a minute every single time. Our older dog's condition got so bad that my husband had to start carrying him outside to use the bathroom because he could no longer walk on his own. He began crying at random points during the day and throughout the night and was shaking constantly. When it reached that point, I scheduled an appointment at Cadence to figure out how to help him. It was heartbreaking to watch his health decline so rapidly. We still told ourselves it was just age, and that the boarding stay had simply been too much for him. I wish I had questioned our younger dog's changes more seriously at that time though. He had been a completely healthy, strong, energetic dog before any of this. Looking back, the odds of him changing that drastically overnight are really suspect. Because our older dog's condition had declined so severely, Cadence suggested euthanasia to end his suffering. At that point, it felt like the only option. We were devastated, but at over 100 years old in human years, we knew he had lived a long, good life. After our older dog passed, our younger dog continued showing strange behaviors and health concerns (not eating well, being anxious and panicky, etc.). There were days he seemed a little more like himself, but then he'd regress. I chalked most of it up to grief from losing his big brother Dominic. We had also just had a newborn, so we assumed all the changes in the household were hard on him too. Then we scheduled his bath at Cadence Animal Hospital on August 7, and I will always regret scheduling that final appointment he had with them. His health severely and drastically declined within less than 24 hours of that bath visit. The next day, August 8, he started acting extremely scared (hunching over, panting, clearly in distress). We were too scared to take him back to Cadence and were preparing to take him to a different vet. But when my husband went to check on him while I was with the baby, he found him lying dead on the floor. I am writing this in absolute disbelief and shock. Less than 24 hours before writing this, my 8-year-old dog passed away suddenly, after a sharp decline immediately following that single overnight stay at Cadence, a period of slight improvement at home, and then one final, severe decline after a single bath appointment at Cadence. Just a few months prior, our older dog had become severely disabled after that same overnight stay at Cadence and had to be put to sleep because his suffering was unbearable. This entire nightmare started roughly four months ago after a single boarding stay at Cadence Animal Hospital that ruined both of our dogs' lives. I'll never know exactly what happened to our dogs on March 26-27 at Cadence. Was it physical abuse? Severe neglect? A mistake with the vaccines? I'll sadly never know for sure. What I do know is that I will never easily trust a vet again, especially not Cadence Animal Hospital.

Within minutes of calling, I arrived in the office with my Sunny, and Carmen at the front desk took my baby to the back and induced vomiting within minutes, as time was of the essence. Fortunately, there was no bandage as I did discover the bandage the next day on our morning walk... I guess it slipped off and I didn't notice. However, the care and prompt actions of the staff at Animal Emergency Center was phenomenal!! Also, besides Carmen and Dr. O'Dea, there was another staff member there who took care of Sunny and I, but her name slipped my mind. You are all so very fantastic and I can't thank you all enough from the bottom of my heart and the pad of Sunny's paw. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!!! Also, DO NOT GO TO VETERINARY EMERGENCY and CRITICAL CARE ON TROPICANA!!!! THEY ARE HORRIBLE AND THEIR STAFF IS RUDE!!! THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR ANIMALS!!! While the staff is super nice, and the hospital is clean...if you come here after hours prepare to break out your wallet. They wanted to charge us SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR AN X-RAY!!! $600 for an X-RAY?! Our normal vet clinic charges less than $100 for an X-ray...our charge to treat our cat was $427 dollars, that we would normally have paid probably $250 or less...
