Even worse than stressing out me and my wife, his lack of self control also caused a lot of anxiety for Zeke. We were hoping that the training with OffLeash SoCal would give him a strong foundation that we could build on, and we feel like that's exactly what we got. It's really incredible the amount of progress he's made in just a short time. On our first walk since he got back, he was so good at sticking to my side with heel that I actually felt a little bad that he wasn't getting to explore and sniff around almost at all. That's on me, since I still haven't gotten used to issuing all the commands at the appropriate times. Next time I'm going to make a point to give him space to do his own thing after we've gotten the daily training refresher out of the way -- I think he'll be hearing "break" a lot more from me. It should be said that the boarding training really is just a foundation. He's not perfectly obedient, and there's a lot of work left for my wife and I to do with him in the weeks and months to come. She was very timid and would hide under our couch, and Angie gave us tips to avoid these unwanted behaviors as they could lead to issues in the future (like biting). We enrolled Poppy, our 4 month old puppy at the time, in their 10-day reverse board-and-train program. I wasn't expecting her to come out perfectly trained in 10 days, but I did expect the level of intensive training they advertised on their site. The trainer we got was sweet and had a calm energy, which I liked since Poppy was skittish around new people. But the actual training didn't come close to matching what was promised. We have security cameras at home, so I could see exactly what was happening while we were gone. Most days were only 5-10 minutes of actual training. The rest of the time the trainer was watching TV or on her phone. If we'd wanted someone to watch TV with our puppy, we could've asked a neighbor for free. By the end of it, Poppy knew "sit" and "down" and not much else. The separation anxiety and potty training work we'd specifically talked about before signing up hadn't really progressed. I want to be clear, my problem wasn't that she wasn't fully trained in 10 days. It's that we paid for a specific service and didn't get it. I emailed the owner, Jeff, sent him the video clips, and asked for a partial refund. He wouldn't address any of it directly, just offered services that were already included in our package and turned down the refund. Then he was rude to my husband on the phone, which threw me because my husband is about as easygoing as they come and almost never gets worked up over anything. I also found it concerning that the exit document I was given included a clause saying clients agreed not to post negative reviews. I never signed it, but seeing that made me question how much honest customer feedback actually makes it online. Super shady. We ended up going with a different trainer afterward, and Poppy turned out exactly how we'd expected her to after actual, consistent training. Maybe we just got unlucky with the trainer. I can only go off our own experience, but between the training we actually received and how they handled it afterward, I wouldn't recommend them.

When I adopted my current dog, Cinqué, I had never had a puppy as young as he was, and I was not necessarily prepared for his energy level or for some of his behavior. From my initial meeting, I felt comfortable, and I felt very well informed about what the short-term and long-term goals were for me and my guy. I decided on the one year program and admit I was initially taken aback at the cost, it's certainly not cheap, but after just the first round of board and train, it's been so worth the investment. I went from a puppy who, although he has always been friendly and playful, and sweet, was jokingly described as constantly being in raptor mode to a dog that I can already take out to dog-friendly public spaces. We recently went to the Lazy Dog Café, and it was actually a really nice afternoon. We received compliments from other dog owners about how well behaved he was, even though he was only a puppy! We just finished Nature Dog I, which he loved, and we both learned so much. I'm really excited to continue in all the other classes that we can participate in as part of the one year program. Having a dog that I can take into public spaces with me, travel with, and have off leash in the outdoors with absolute confidence that he's going to behave exactly as I want him to is something I never even thought was possible. Hunter who leads some of the group classes and the front office people, Aaron and Jeremy are just top shelf! Brent is a very hands-on owner. You will see him almost every day that you are there and he teaches some of the group classes as well.
