I think if you're familiar with the properties on Banyan Dr. you know the Hotels are old. I don't expect much, we always stayed at Uncle Billy's (RIP) but decided to try here. First off, the Lobby area is absolutely beautiful and parts of the Restaurant is still under construction. However, the rooms are dated.. extremely dated. We had three rooms for our Family, all on the 8th floor, and our room smelled of straight mildew as soon as we opened the door. Unfortunately we couldn't keep the door open to air it out as it was also extremely humid and there were swarms of termites on the balcony. The wallpaper was bubbling all over the walls, and the rug and chair fabric looked as if it were better to just toss. The minifridge was also busted.. it would freeze all our beverages that weren't placed in the freezer. Annoying but I'd rather it be frigid than warm. The bed was very comfortable and clean.. as well as the bathroom. No signs of rust or mold. No bugs were seen in the room. Front desk was flustered when we checked up, there were a lot of activities in Hilo town this past weekend so although they weren't overly friendly, they weren't rude. Parking is onsite but of course first come first serve. It's nice that they have a garage under as well but if you miss snagging a space, there's street parking. It was a great visit for us so we do recommend it if you get your room at a decent rate. The property is very well kept and the elevators are relatively fast but the location itself is very convenient to everything you need to do. read more

We are frequent travelers and have stayed in hotels all over the world. Unfortunately, our experience at the Hilo Hawaiian was one of the most disappointing hotel stays we have had. The property is in significant need of maintenance and updating. During our stay we experienced the following issues: * Strong unpleasant odor in the rooms * Ripped carpeting * Mold on woodwork and around the shower surround/tile * Peeling and bubbling wallpaper * Dirty hallways and common areas * Mold on the ice machine * Main public bathrooms were unclean * Multiple electrical outlets that did not function * Dirty outlets and light switches in the room * TV remotes that did not work in either room * No smart TV capabilities * Uncomfortable sheets and pillows * Additional charge to use a microwave The housekeeping service was also extremely disappointing. We repeatedly requested room service over four days and were continually told someone would come. When service was finally provided, the bed was made, but there was no sweeping, dusting, or meaningful cleaning performed. The restaurant experience was equally frustrating. The coffee was weak and overpriced at $5 per cup. A waiter even stated that management instructed staff to prepare the coffee weak so they would not go through as much product, which was surprising to hear. The bay view, which is often highlighted as a selling point, was also disappointing, with water conditions that were far less appealing than expected. We understand that older properties require upkeep, but cleanliness, basic maintenance, and guest service should never be compromised. Based on our experience, we would not choose to stay here again and cannot recommend this hotel to other travelers. read more

I've never had the most horrible front desk service in my years coming to Hilo & staying at the Hilo Hawaiian. if the front desk lady thought she could get away with her stink attitude she's sadly mistaken. Her disrespect towards me (and I'm LOCAL! BORN & RAISED! She spoke with no respect! No friendliness, NO ALOHA! Why would you employee someone like this! Fantastic hotel in Hilo! We stayed here for a couple of nights on our vacation and it was great. The lobby is spacious and modern looking with plenty of places for lounging. There is a pool to the side of the hotel and lots of parking available. The hotel also has a restaurant bar and a proper restaurant, a steakhouse that does buffets on the weekend. We didn't do the buffet as neither of us really enjoys eating at a buffet but we did have breakfast there and we went to the bar side for a couple of drinks, including a free cocktail upon check in. The room was clean and had everything we needed. We booked a room facing the water and the coconut island which was a lovely view. You can hear through the wall quite loudly but if turning on the fan constantly helped drown out the noise at night. I was a little annoyed that we were placed in a room next to a family with a bunch of kids, including a crying infant when the hotel didn't seem to be too busy during our stay. I went outside a couple of times to enjoy the view with some drinks but had to get back inside immediately due to the loud crying. We were also issued a $10 voucher to use at the restaurant. We used one for breakfast but could not use the other 2 vouchers. There are other restaurants nearby and even one that is a walking distance. Had there been an option to order from a menu at the steakhouse, I would have loved the chance to do so. Perhaps next time. Our usual hotel in Hilo... Been coming here for years whenever we are in Hilo. Located on Banyan Drive, next to Liliokulani Park and Coconut Island. Also walking distance to Suisan Fish Market. A nice quiet area of Hilo. Hotel interior was refreshed probably over the last 10 years and it looks clean. Outside is a little dated, but totally okay. Upon check in, we were given two $10 meal discount coupon for the hotel restaurant, and used it for breakfast the next morning. Restaurant has nice views of Hilo Bay. Also there is a small enclosed bar area with nice bay views across the main lobby area. I think of the three hotel on Banyan Drive, this is the best one and have been satisfied with it ever the years. read more

Found Hilo Hawaiian Hotel on Southwest Airlines while booking my flight as I wanted the points. Out of all the hotels that were available, this was the most reasonably priced and looked clean. I needed a room with two double Beds that could sleep four people. Hotel is close to the airport. Plenty of parking. I believe the resort fee was $40/ Night but you can park anywhere. They also have a parking garage. The hotel is right next to the Liliuokalani Park. Great for those Thales early morning walks with the other morning peeps. The lobby is a wide. Friendly staff and has a lounge and restaurant. Upon checking in, I got four free drink tickets and a free breakfast for each day we were staying at the hotel. You need a key to get up to the room at all times. When we got the room, the first thing we checked was the number of towels. So we called and they brought us more within a short time. The room is big and spacious for 4 people. There's a refrigerator in the room. Ice machines are only in the 6th and 8th floor. But you gotta go early because the other guests took all of it. The grounds are great. No hot tub to soak aching muscles after the days adventure. The pool has a beautiful view of the bay. They do have a gym that is a separate little building outside of the parking and on the main street. Hotel is close to other restaurants and short drive to Downtown Hilo. Hilo Hawaiian Hotel was a great experience and would be staying here again. read more

A room overlooking Hilo Bay and Coconut Island? Beautiful! Getting up to see this reminds me how much I miss Hilo. When checking in, me and my hubby got 2 comp drinks, plus $10 off per day off their WSW restaurant. Since our room wasn't ready when we checked in, we took advantage of the drink - yummy. Our room had a king size bed. It seemed pretty standard, but had lots of room to walk around and didn't feel stuffy. Will stay here again when in Hilo. read more

They have very nice people that work there but the place is really run down. It's borderline dumpy. For over 300 a night you expect a nice hotel. The bar and restaurant only stay open until 9 even on the weekends. There is no microwave in the room but you can rent one for $5 a day. The fridge is in the bathroom and it leaked. You walk down the hall and there are usually 3-4 microwaves on the ground outside of rooms. Looks so bad. And then our A/C unit sounded like a helicopter landing every time it kicked on. The door to it was wide open and it looked like it's never been cleaned. They did come up and fix it the next day but the first night of sleep was rough. I only gave it 2 stars because the workers were nice. Would not stay here again. read more

Spectacular in every way! Only one issue (not Hilo Hawaiian's fault) I did book on Priceline and they don't tell you clearly you have to pay a $35 daily fee upon check in. So that cheap price you got on PL ? For me it was $350 extra. Next time I'll book direct. Room was immaculate. Included a mini fridge. Crisp linens. Nice patio and I really enjoyed the pool. Walk to coconut island and the Japanese gardens. Just gorgeous! I do wish we had a bay view, I peeked at one and view was incredible. Our room had a garden view which was above the front side of the hotel. It was fine. I decided not to ask to switch rooms because front desk staff were so nice and I didn't want to be a complaining guest . The staff were all so lovely. Sadly, I did witness a few rude guests. How annoying! I mean we are literally in paradise... live Aloha when you are in Hawaii, people! Loved the free breakfast, and the Happy Hour is awesome- on Fri Sat nights they had terrific local live music. We ordered appetizers and beers and it was fine! Free parking. Filtered water to refill your water bottles. Very thoughtful touches And the lobby is just beautiful!! WiFi isn't the best but it works. I did not try the Steakhouse but it looked nice. It's been over 10 years since I've stayed at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. I was recently there for a one night staycation. There has been a major update renovation to their rooms! The beds especially are so comfortable and the rooms clean and inviting. A Continental Breakfast is now served between 6:30am to 10am. Although it's limited to coffee, fruit, juice, pastry and cereal. It's a thoughtful addition! Thr staff of the hotel is very welcoming and helpful. The cocktail bar & lounge has a very good happy hour with very reasonable prices. The continental breakfast is also served here and there is a nice ocean view. With Kama'aina (local resident) rates, it is a very affordable. The location on Banyan Drive in Hilo is convenient. Highly recommended! read more

We were very disappointed with our stay. We came to the Big Island hoping to catch episode 40 and ended up getting back to our room late. I went to adjust the thermostat and noticed ants on the wall and ground. The next morning when I went to the front desk, they offered to spray the room for us. I went to tell my husband but decided I didn't want to be in a chemically room and when I told them never mind, they switched our rooms. However, this room also had ants. We didn't have any Wi-Fi in our room. Something about a storm in Oahu knocking out a tower. I also thought it was icky that the lotion was used in the new room. And to top it all off, check out is at noon. So why did housekeeping open our door before 9 am...even with the Do not Disturb sign on the door? What a good night's sleep I got here! It's been over 10+ years since I last stayed at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel in sleepy Hilo town. Yes, at night in Hilo, you can probably hear the lovely sounds of the croqui frogs. Some folks don't like the noise, but as for Bruddah man, I don't mind it at all. When I pulled into the hotel parking lot (in the early evening), I could hear the chirping noises of the croqui frogs. As for my accommodations - My hotel room was nice & comfy. Looks like the Hilo Hawaiian hotel has done a great job with securing the building, as well as maintenance of the hotel room. The hotel room had your standard amenities - coffee maker, refrigerator, hair dryer, large screen T.V., iron and ironing board. The hotel also provided soaps/lotions/shampoo/body wash. In the morning, there was a complimentary continental breakfast provided by the hotel. The simple continental breakfast consisted of - fresh fruit, oatmeal, pastries, juices, & hot coffee and tea. The room rate was very reasonable at ($169.15) per night, and after adding all the various taxes, the room was just under ($200.00 bucks). The Hilo Hawaiian Hotel also had a Kama'aina Special - No Resort Fee. All you have to do when checking in is provide a valid Hawaii ID/Driver's License for proof that you're a Kama'aina. Parking is free, but it's first come, first serve basis. I had a great night's sleep at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, no road noise, or honeymoon noises (see my review from the hotel I stayed at in Kona, Lol!). The bed was very comfortable, and there were many electrical outlets available so you could charge your electrical devices. I would say the highlight of my hotel stay was the spectacular ocean view from my hotel room! If you take a quick look at my pics, I'm sure one can appreciate this hotel. read more

10/11/24 Hilo Hawaiian Hotel 71 Banyan Dr Hilo, HI 96720 I stayed there for six nights in October for a high school reunion. This is the place where the locals stay when in Hilo, it's lower end than it's neighbor hotel but not by much in my opinion and a better value. There is ample self parking. There is a small unattended swimming pool at the back of the property. There is a well equipped modern fitness shack outside the front of the hotel on Banyan Drive. My Banyan view room was spacious with a workstation desk, cable TV, coffee maker and mini refrigerator. There was no microwave. The AC worked as expected. The only thing that didn't work was the AC outlets in the lamp bases that did not make contact to my plugs. The internet WiFi worked well and was on the slow side but I'm spoiled by my fiber internet at home. Room service was every other day which is fine with me. The staff was friendly and helpful. The included Continental breakfast was feeble with two bakery selections, one or two fruits, inconsistent oatmeal, juices and coffee. But it's better than nothing. A solid hotel and good value. It's a nice hotel but I'd say the three and a half stars given by Yelpers is about right. The lobby is very attractive. Open aired from front to back. Very nice staff, from check-in, to the bartender, to the bell hops. It's all self parking, which is fine, especially because there's no charge. That's rare! And they have both outdoor and underground parking. They also have coin operated clothes washers and dryers. The pool is decent, nothing special. The view is nice... sits right along Hilo Bay. It's walking distance to a few restaurants and parks. But mostly you need to drive. The rooms are spacious and clean. That's probably the most important thing. And we had a room with a view of the bay, so can't complain about that. The serve "continental" breakfast, but don't get your expectations too high. It was coffee, tea, juice for drinks. Apples, banana bread, and some pastry for food. Oh, and some very watery oatmeal that I think they mis-cooked? Overall for the price and amenities, it's a nice place. read more

booked this hotel through Expedia based on the "premium suite" photos and description, but what I received at check-in was a worn-out room that looked nothing like the listing. When I raised the issue, the staff said it was "Expedia's error" and refused to honor the advertised/confirmed room type or provide a reasonable solution. A hotel shouldn't shift responsibility to the guest when there's a partner listing error--guests shouldn't be the ones paying the price for it. The lack of accountability and customer care was unacceptable. I have screenshots and photos documenting the mismatch. I won't be returning, and I do not recommend this property. read more

Visiting Hilo on a business trip, first time in a long time and we decided to stay at Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. I was surprised it has been a while staying in a hotel on the islands and was quite surprised that they had to bell service and rooms are not cleaned or service daily we arrived on the 25 of July and was told by the front desk they were not cleaning the room if you run out something let the front desk know other then that they will come in on the 27th to empty your trash and change towels only. The hotel is okay, front desk staff one person was not the friendly maybe she had a bad day. Parking they have 4 different parking lots and the one on the side the same level as the hotel is very tight, so if you don't want nicks on you car better to park in the lower parking stalls. The Continental breakfast was ok, but if after eating there by the 3rd day found out they would discount your bill $5.00 total of $10.00 for a couple in a room off the restaurant bill if you want eat a set meal. Which we did and it was much more enjoyable. And less crowded, if there is no room you can take out your continental breakfast to your room or eat it in the lobby. read more

The hotel just got bought out by Wyndham. A week ago I tried to book the hotel while it was Castle and it was $100 cheaper for the total stay but since it got picked up by Wyndham, the price went up :( Bad timing. I booked the cheapest rate which was booking direct for $160 a night in a basic room with no view. The $160 did not include the resort fee or tax. Lodging in Hilo is extremely expensive , but they get away with this due to there being so few places to lodge. My 3 night stay ended up with tax and the resort fee came to $545.75. When I did online check in, I did ask if they could possibly give me a room with a balcony and a view figuring what the Hell do I have to lose would have been an additional $45 a night for this and to my surprise, they did! The woman at check in who checked me in was friendly and fast. The young men outside who appear to be valet but aren't (it's a weird set up outside considering it's self park lol) were friendly as well. There was plenty of parking although I did notice that the later you arrive the more limited the spots become. The resort fee like many say is a joke and imo should be illegal as I did not use the pool which had a ton of kids in it, did not use the gym, and did not use their toiletries (which are gender neutral...not kidding...it says gender neutral on the packaging). Hawaii also taxes their resort fees which is ridiculous. They do give you $10 coupons to use at the steakhouse but it has to be used on food. Ended up not using them as the food was already overpriced $17 before the coupon for a croissant sandwich during breakfast. If you noticed, I'm on a budget :) A lot of people are negging this place due to being dated and needing a renovation but I had no problem with it as I was used to staying at Uncle Billy's. I actually find the retro look relaxing and quaint. AC in the bedroom was appreciated as was having a fridge (a Yelper mentioned it making things freeze...I had this experience too), comfortable bed, good shower, and large tv with many channels. Bugs...Although I've lived in Hawaii, I still never got used to the giant flying roaches and huge termites. I did not notice any bugs in my room until early in the evening when I went to wash my hands (the sink area is sort of the "kitchen" with the mini fridge, coffee maker, and where you leave your bathroom stuff). There were a couple mini roaches on the floor near the mini fridge, one in the sink, and a larger one (thankfully not the huge ones) with huge whisker/antenna looking things coming from what looks like a crack in the sink. Forget doing cosmetic renovation when you need to seal up cracks in your sink. Once I realized that there were some bugs, I put my food which did not require refrigeration into my backpack zipped up and did not leave a single toiletry of mine out due to germs. I honestly wish I brought gloves with me as I'm trying to remain as ignorant as possible when it comes with sanitation here as I do not want it to ruin the last 2 days of my vacation lol. Another thing to note, while the balcony and view is beautiful and definitely make use out of it by having meals or a drink on it like I've been doing, you don't hear the ocean like one reviewer said. It would have been nice to have heard it but since I kept my balcony door closed at night due to insects, you likely won't hear it anyway. Another thing to note, do you need AC in Hilo? As someone who likes my room cold, I'm saying yes. A lot of Airbnbs don't have AC. Pricing info that may help other travelers on a budget in terms of lodging. I love the Big Island and end up splitting my time between Hilo and Kona but mainly in Hilo. $546 for 3 nights in Hilo included an upgraded bay view with balcony from the cheapest rate that I booked under for no view=$182 a night $427 for 2 nights in Kona at the Royal Kona for an oceanview room plus $110 for parking and the resort fee for those nights=$537 for 2 nights=$269 a night...was given an upgrade form the oceanview I booked to an oceanfront (stayed at this hotel many times). Booked on Priceline with a $50 off coupon as an Express Deal where the name of the hotel isn't listed. This was the cheapest way to get a room there. UPDATES SINCE LEAVING: On my last day I couldn't use my balcony as there was a huge swarm of termites on it who shedded their wings =/ You only get housekeeping every 3 days which is fine so on 3 different occasions I called for towels to get delivered. Of the 3 times I did this (2 times on the phone and 1 time at reception), I received 0 towels. The only way I received extra towels was when I went to reception and saw a different person working there. I would stay here again but probably bring roach spray. read more

There aren't many choices for hotels in Hilo, but I always enjoy staying at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel for its location, friendly staff and now updated rooms. Nothing fancy here, just a warm and inviting atmosphere, nice views of Coconut Island and the bay, and walking distance to Queen Liliʻuokalani Gardens. They have a great WSW | Whiskey, Steak and Wine restaurant in the lobby. Solid food and service and open for breakfast and dinner. This property has plenty of parking. At the time of writing, Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel has 3 stars. That's not just misleading--that's propaganda. This place deserves maybe 1 star... and even that's generous if you've ever stayed literally anywhere else. You step into the lobby and are immediately hit with a stench so foul it feels like a physical attack. I was told it's coming from the hotel steakhouse. Buddy, if your steakhouse smells like low tide at a fish gutting dock, maybe it's time to shut it down or rename it "Scent of Regret." Panicked, you rush to the elevator, hoping to ascend into cleaner air. Instead, you're greeted by a sad, crooked little 12-inch monitor--probably salvaged from a hospital waiting room in 1997--playing choppy hotel ads that only remind you how far you've fallen in life. And then... the room. Oh, the room. If you've ever wanted to sleep in a time capsule sealed during the Gulf War, congratulations. The wallpaper is peeling like it's trying to abandon ship. The furniture is haunted. The air smells like mildew and broken dreams. You get a single thimble of shampoo and a toilet paper holder that looks like it lost a fight with a drunk raccoon. It's the kind of place that makes you reflect on your choices. Deeply. Existentially. Honestly, nothing in Hilo is luxurious--but this isn't "modest." This is punishment. If you're staying more than two nights, you're not on vacation anymore... you're in exile. Catch the next flight to Oahu and cleanse yourself. read more

I strongly do NOT recommend Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. The prices may be inexpensive for a few nights stay but pick any other hotel. You walk into their pretty, open air lobby and you're whacked in the face with a stench of rotting fish, I think the smell of the SF pier is miles better than this. Our room, we booked standard room no balcony or anything fancy. The showers are not meant for people 6'+, and theres no fan to even air it out you just let it marinate, might be why the wallpaper is peeling off everywhere. The front desk is available any time of day which is nice, but if they'd actually listen or follow directions on how many towels we'd ask for this would've been a little bit more positive. Scheduling housekeeping is very simple here, but if you do they might just not care and wait until your room is vacant to clean it. Cherry on top would be that the very night we checked into the hotel, we had roaches running across the dresser and if you let food sit out for any amount of time they would already have claimed it as their own. You're already booking a flight out here, might as well get a good hotel too and not just one of the cheaper ones. read more

Said to call on day of reservation for a possible early check in. When I called they said check back at 1:00pm, so after lunch swung by hotel. Me and my Husband together celebrated our birthday by staying here at Hilo Hawaiian hotel. I came here with my husband and my 2year old daughter. Had a very soothing and comforting stay here. We booked our room at 5th floor with an ocean view. Rooms were clean and beds were very comfortable. They had a coffee machine along with hawaiian coffee and a green tea bad and one American tea bag, a refrigerator and an iron with an iron table. They don't have an microwave but of anyone need it they will provide you with $5 per day which is good. We needed key cards to enter, wifi was fast and good. Parking lots has good number of space, they has basement parking along with open spaces parkings lots. They had a gym and a gift shop which was really good were you can buy some gifts and can also grab some snack along. The hotel is surrounded with Banian trees and if you get down from you room Japanese garden and coconut island is just across the road which is just 5 minutes walk from the hotel. I was bit disappointed with one single issue and that was being an hotel in Hawaii and we being an outsider expected a warm welcoming by offering us a flower garland as that whats Hawaii is known for but the interaction at the reception was bit cold just that they gave us our room keys thats all. Room service was very good and were helpful. My overall stay was just memorable. Thank you Hilo Hawaiian to make our trip amazing. We are definitely looking forward to be with you again. read more

I needed a room for just one night, and to be honest, I chose this hotel because it was slightly cheaper than the Grand Naniloa. But it all worked out and I have no complaints at all about the hotel. Check-in was a breeze - the lovely wahine who assisted me at check-in was very friendly. We each received a plastic water bottle for free, and there was a water cooler at the entrance for us to fill up our water bottles. Hooray for free filtered water. Our room was clean and it came with shampoo, conditioner, soap, coffee maker and two packets of coffee (one caffeinated and one decaf), paper coffee cups, hair dryer, two sets of towels, and a nice flatscreen TV with spectrum cable. The room was equipped with wi-fi, however, I seemed to have trouble with the wifi and just stuck with my regular cell service. The only thing I didn't like about my stay was the bird droppings on our rental car that greeted us the next morning. TIP: if you're parking your car here, park in the underground area so you don't get bombed like how we did! Otherwise, we had a very lovely, albeit short stay here. read more

Final verdict: Happy with the room, the awesome view was a bonus. Would stay again. The Good - I paid extra for the balcony and bay view ( the Banyan view room cost less) I would eat my meals on the balcony and look at the bay ( and there is coconut island) - Plenty of room, in the room. I traveled solo, but if a family of 4 was traveling, this large room is useful ( think, 4 suitcases, people packing and unpacking) - free breakfast. delicious. - elevators. I am use to smaller motels where you the stairs are the only option - The bed was more comfortable, then the bed I had at Bay Reeds hotel, also in Hilo The bad. - While the view of the bay is great. Upon arriving, you are greeted by a very nice lobby, bar, restaurant and view of the ocean. You need your hotel key to operate the elevators. This is convenient and nice as it deters anyone who isn't staying in the hotel to go up to the floors. I have mixed emotions about our stay. Pros: - The lobby is gorgeous. It is very up to date and has fresh flowers delivered to spruce up the room. - There is a bar on the first floor of the hotel. It has plenty of seating, and some nights they have live music. - The view of the ocean is beautiful. You see coconut island right in front of you which is fun to walk over to. - We booked through Costco so we had a $100 credit for a meal at their steakhouse. Cons: - The hotel rooms are very basic and old. They definitely need a good remodel. Upon entering our room, there were nuts and shells in the corner? The carpet is very old and clearly had not been vacuumed well. - Our toilet barely worked in the sense that the arm lever wouldn't close fully so every time you flushed the toilet, the water tank would run until you stuck your hand in the back and fixed the stopper. - There were a lot of fruit flies in the bar. This isn't necessarily the bars fault, and as I traveled to other places on the island, fruit flies were everywhere so maybe this is a normal thing on the island? I just don't like fruit flies in my drinks and it happened quite often. - The continental breakfast is a joke. Each room gets 1 to go box for their food. This isn't necessarily a bad thing because you can fill it as much as you want and continue to go back for more food. However, the "breakfast" is nothing more than 2 types of croissants, an apple or orange, and premade oatmeal with raisins or brown sugar. That is all. There is coffee and juice. But they water down the juice so it's water with a hint of orange. Overall, this wasn't a bad experience, it just wasn't what we were used to. We wouldn't necessarily stay here again, as we like to vacation a little more boujee-r but if you are looking for a place and don't have as high expectations like we do, it would suffice. It seems like the hotel spends most their money on making the first floor modern and up to date so it looks nice to the eye, but completely ignores the need to remodel and bring their rooms up to date. read more

We had a great view from our suite at the Hilo Hawaiian. In fact we had the same room from a year ago. With covid winding down you would expect the service to be back to pre covid standards. Well you still have to call to get towels. They request that you put the trash and the used towels out side your door. We were told that house keeping will not clean your room unless you stay there for five days or longer. They were ants crawling on the dining table when we entered the room. On the brighter side, Kinan from bell services was friendly he delivered our suitcase, Ice chest and other bags from our shopping at KTA. He was fast and efficient. He had mentioned that they arr short staffed in house keeping. Hope the situation will improve before our next Big Island visit. read more

Burr. Bed next to the air conditioning wall. Very noisy and being blown by cold air all night makes sleeping uncomfortable. If you don't have air conditioning, the room get stuffy. They clearly barely clean because there was dirt, grime, and hair when we arrived from the previous guests, in both the bathroom and the bedroom. Recommended. Pro tips before we review: -Fitness/Weight room available in the kiosk hut fronting the hotel. Need key card for entry. -Ice cold water dispenser available in the fitness room, as the one in the lobby isn't as cold. -Pool "technically" opens at 11am, despite the 7am open time posted on the hotel website. -Room towel and toiletry restocking services are only available by phone. No daily room cleaning. The hotel overall is great for the price paid. Services are limited due to the staffing shortages. However, the staff friendliness and hotel room views are excellent. Really had a great stay here and would stay again one day. The area neighborhood has its share of homeless walking around, but unlike Oahu, they don't bother you directly by walking up to you and hassling you. Otherwise, the area is good. One of just a few hotels in the Hilo area. While it isn't newly remodeled as the Naniloa is, we enjoy ourselves every time we stay here. The workers in all departments are fantastically friendly and capably accommodating. The bar serves early morning coffee and a continental breakfast. The bar is well stocked and the bartender makes great bloody Mary's. And to top it off, it's within wary walking distance of Hilo Bay for the state canoe races. read more

The lowest piece of trash I've ever encountered while traveling. How they are claiming a 3-star hotel rating is beyond me. Read on. Even though they claim to be a smoke free venue, apparently you can smoke on your balcony at the 8th floor, and the stench travels everywhere. They failed to mention this until I called front desk to report a smoker in the adjacent room. Soon it became a health issue, making it impossible to stay there. Their supposedly best room is an abomination, just look at the photos. Missing door lock/block, stains on the foot beds, chair. This ain't the mainland, but nothing about it says 3-star hotel. Employees seem to be acquired at a discount store: zero accountability, absent soft skills. Informing them about all the issues, and letting know that we are not going to stay, prompted no apology. We had a rough start to our stay at the Hilo Hawaiian hotel and I gave it 3 stars. After a full week staying there, I feel fully justified in changing the rating to 4 stars. During our week, we found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. When we needed something like towels or the phone did not work, someone came within minutes. The lounge serves good food and has reasonable prices for drinks. The location is excellent for getting to downtown Hilo in 5 minutes. The adjacent park is great for strolling. The views from the hotel are incredible. The hotel has ample free parking. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and if we went were to visit Hilo again we would definitely stay here. read more

It feels so great to travel again, even just to island hop. We visited Hilo in June for Hilo Brewfest and Hilo Beer Week and decided to try staying at a different hotel and were glad we did. The Hilo Hawaiian Hotel is on Banyan Drive next to other popular hotels and Queen Liliuokalani Gardens. This area is equal parts beauty and depression with amazing places to walk and explore, but also issues arising from nearby problem areas. As far as convenience goes, this hotel is just a quick Uber/Lyft ride to downtown Hilo and the surrounding area. The hotel has been recently remodeled, which shows in the common areas and rooms. It's not frills but also very clean and nice. Cleaning service is not offered daily as of this writing, you request new towels or other items from the front desk during your stay. Kama'aina discount only applies to the mauka facing rooms, which is beautiful in its own right but there is an issue with a pump sound that runs 24/7 and makes using the lanai more annoying than enjoyable. The rooms are plenty large for couple or small family. There are ice machines on even floors, each guest also is given a water bottle for use with the purifier in the lobby. The hotel has a beautiful pool (it rained our whole time so we didn't get to use it), WSW The Steakhouse restaurant with breakfast and $5 off coupon for each day of stay, and a coffee shop that converts to a bar and music venue on evenings and weekends. It's a quick walk from the Gardens, Coconut Island, and other hotels and restaurants nearby. Prices for our stay were worthwhile for the cleanliness and location. The only negative really was the service; rude experience with check in and dealing with the staff. We did however meet some very nice and helpful staff members especially in the coffee shop and on check out. Based on previous experiences at other hotels and this one, we'll definitely be back on our next stay. read more

They don't have everything they advertise. They advertise free continental breakfast and coffee and don't have it. They have one working ice machine that was always empty.
