Hinds Life Care afforded the opportunity for my grandmother to have a gentle, dignified end of life. I am so grateful that the experience was so peaceful. The house offered a home environment. There are two visitors allowed at a time in the room with the resident, and another two are allowed to wait in the living room areas. There is also a spacious backyard with tables and benches to rest. The volunteers also keep a stocked coffee bar and fresh baked cookies for family members. The house is so peaceful and quiet. A music therapist even came by to play guitar and sing. She sang a song in Spanish for my grandma. I was never aware that facilities like this existed and am so grateful for the compassionate care that the nurses, volunteers and music therapist provided. read more

The street that the house is on, is gorgeous and quiet. The house itself is very comfortable and cozy for family members/visitors. There's coffee and water and cookies that never run out. There's comfortable chairs and couches. We had 3 nurses who were kind enough, gentle to an extent, and caring. I wish I got their names. However, Sue was the most appallingly abrasive, verbally abusive, insensitive nurse I've ever experienced, and I'm a nurse myself. I've never received care or witnessed care as careless and cold as Sue, and that's not even in hospice. And, in hospice, the nurses are known to be extra special, extra caring, extra soothing and gentle. Comforting, reassuring, soft. This woman will forever taint the memory of my dad's last 3 days. Fortunately, there are many positives with Hinds, and I'll try to focus on that, but Sue was so awful, it'll forever stand out in my mind. She fought us when we requested comfort meds. She downright refused sometimes. The very first time we met her, it was 3pm, nobody was sharing the room with my dad. And 4 of us were at my dying father's side. The moment she got on her shift, she started aggressively kicking us all out, in the middle of us praying and crying. It was terrifying. When I asked to speak with a doctor who had agreed to meds every 2 hours, Sue fought back and refused to give the meds until every 4 hours. This is hospice. This isn't palliative. The only goal is comfort. My father had the death rattle and she fought me hard. When she finally agreed to give him a comfort med, she dramatically crushed the med and said "you're forcing me". It was scary and appalling. There's more, but I'll leave it at that. The volunteers were so welcoming, so gentle and perceptive. The 3 other nurses who's names I can't remember were exponentially more kind, and one held and hugged me when my dad took his last breaths. The rooms themselves were comfortable. ZERO STARS After contacting Hinds for my wonderful wife of 42 years, They informed us that all of her Medications save the ones for pain were to be taken away and disposed of. We declined rather than accelerating her demise. Obviously I went with a different agency when the time came. Secondly and this is more where the zero rating comes in. I lost her a little more than a week ago 10/5/2024. I called to join their Loss of Partner/Spouse Support group. Nope, all full, can't get into another one till February. ...It's October people. Keep looking. If they won't allow you to let your loved one survive as long as they want. DO NOT USE THAT AGENCY. If they are not willing or able to support you in your time of need. Jennifer H. You are 100% right on all issues. I took my husband out of Hinds care for many of the same reasons. It's not just Hinds research the rise of hospice care and you will better understand the industry. I believe the home care nurses have good intentions but it is administration that is a problem. I discovered that Medicare will pay $6,000.00 per month for 2 nurse visits a month and rarely are the supplies I need available. Hospice tells you are able to take your loved one to regular doctors for illnesses not related to the hospice diagnosis and that is true. What they don't tell you is all your medicare is paid to hospice and you will be billed for outside medical care as a cash patient. read more

Had to reach out at every junction and lip service and platitudes are not enough. Left alone for days at time with a phone number and a box of medication. We couldn't have gotten through such a painful loss in our family without Hinds hospice. We cannot recommend them more highly.

It has taken me almost 3 years to write this review after my mother's passing, but I feel this needs to be heard. My mother was diagnosed with lung cancer and malignant plural infusion, which is a stage four cancer. I cared for her at home for six months until she was put into the care of Hinds hospice. I had two young children and a husband, but I chose to stay with my mother and take care of her In her home. The nurse and the care of Hinds hospice sent to the Home to help me was good. It was the actual Hinds house that was a lot different. After about six months of caring for her, my mother took a turn for the worse. The nurse came and looked at her and said it was time for her to go into Hinds home that she was near death. Hinds had her transported to the Hinds home in Fresno. Three days later, they called me in and sat me down and explained to me that she was only in fact on respite and she had to leave the Hinds home. I told them that was not how they explained it to me. The nurse had me sign a paper where I paid so much a day for her to be there until her passing. One week later, they placed my mother on a chair in front of a window with food in her mouth and told me she needed to leave that she was eating and she was perfectly fine. They also made it a point to take a video of her doing that to show me. Knowing that I was distraught every time I went to visit my mother they cornered me telling me that my mother just wanted to go home and why can't I take her home. My mother was bedridden and the six months I cared for her I changed her diapers and I took care of her, but she was too weak to help me anymore and I could not do it on my own. They then told me that I needed to find a home to place her in and I tried and I looked, but nobody would take her so close to death. By the way, I later found out that that is the Hinds social workers job to find a placement home for the patients. A couple days after they took a video of my mother in a chair in front of the window that they placed her in eating, they called me in for a meeting. It was the doctor, the nurse, and the social worker. The three of them took me into a small room and told me that I needed to move her ,that my mother wanted to go home, but it would take two nurses to help with her. My mother was not of sound mind at that point. She was highly confused and delusional at times. At that point I had an x-ray that was accidentally given to me from Hinds hospice of the malignant plural in her lung. I contacted the oncologist and he said that given the results of the x-ray, she would be gone within the week. Hinds didn't care nor did their doctor. The doctor had the results of the x-ray in her hand she knew the results. They told me I still needed to move her. So I did. I found a wonderful home called Mrs. Scott's that agreed to take my mother. The ambulance came and lifted my mother in pain and crying and wincing and transported her to Mr.Scotts home. Less than a week later, my mother died. When I called the Hinds nurse to come look at her the day before the passed the nurse was aggravated with me and would not give me a clear answer of her condition. I assured her I was not going to put her back in the Hinds home. She then explained to me that my mother maybe only had one night to live. after my mother passed I asked for a report from Hinds of my mom's condition. It took a while to get it and a lot of it in the report said that me ,her daughter, just wanted her money and that my mom would repeatedly say that. I knew right away why that report took a while because all the information was a lie. They wrote that report to cover themselves because they knew how many executives I tried to contact that helped me in no way. They mentioned nothing in the report that my mother's deceased husband was visiting her. My mother's deceased cousin was visiting her. So what I'm saying to everybody now is no matter how many people I called at Hinds no matter how many executives no matter what I did nobody would listen to me and they made me move my mother in excruciating pain only to have her pass away four days after they bullied me to move her. Don't trust them go somewhere else you're already grieving and they make it worse. It boils down to money. after doing some research, I later found out that the state pays them quite a bit of money per patient in the beds. Respite is just a way to make money. They knew my suffering, and I was young and they took advantage of that. They knew my mom's pain and they knew my moms suffering, but they weren't getting enough money for her. Its years later, and the only guilt that I have is allowing them to move my dying mother in pain somewhere else just to pass away a couple days later. I never got past the pain of that and I don't want anyone else go through it. Choose a different hospice for yourself and for your loved one. read more

This is the best place. I so recommend this place for your loved ones. The place is so peaceful. I was very stressed with not all the family being able to see our family member in the hospital but with this hospice home anyone can go but only 2 people at one time can visit and its opened 24 hrs a day 7 days a week. My grandfather's transition deserved what Hinds Hospice said/promised. Unfortunately, those things were never delivered. He died just a couple days later and yet from the start his qualifications for hospice care were questioned. SMH. As if he wasn't close enough to death yet. Lady spent 30 minutes doing an assessment of his readiness before even looking at the poor man or going into the room where he was. The "phone help line" comes with a 20 minute hold so good luck getting help in an emergency once the nurse shows you the ropes and you're on your own. That is not helpful- it's a nuisance! The many situations you find yourself in are endless and you need to minimize chaos not add to jt. If you and your family and looking for comforting helpful support in this vulnerable, challenging time- Hinds Hospice is not the place. read more

My mother was dying. Hinds was so supportive and kept us informed. They sent an RN, LVN regularly, and a kind chaplain Rob Spencer who prayed for our mom. We also met a social worker, Sarah, and volunteer conversation friend. We were well covered. I asked a lot of questions which they tirelessly answered. If you are needing Hospice for someone you love and cherish, and are considering Hinds Hospice, I beg you to reconsider. I chose them, because of their name recognition at a very difficult time when my 95 year old father was leaving the hospital to come home with me to live the rest of his days in the hands of the "comfort care" Hospice is supposed to provide. From the very beginning, I knew it was a mistake but I was too emotionally drained to stop and switch to another Hospice agency. If I could only go back and do it all over The equipment that they brought over was faulty, they gave me an empty oxygen tank without a lever. The suction machine didn't work properly and although they gave me a nebulizer, for breathing treatments, they never ordered me the medication needed for the treatments. The intake nurse was abrasive and started by basically telling me my dad didn't qualify for Hospice, and I needed to give her information she could use to "create a story" to qualify him. (He lived only 4 days after that). The intake nurse didn't explain things, go through the "blue folder", tell me to track medication doses, etc. in fact, I didn't even receive the "comfort care" medication for my dad until 11pm the following night (almost two days later). Now the most important part. Hinds has a phone number to call, "anytime for anything" to speak to a nurse who will help you and even come to your home 24/7. That's not true. When you call that number, you are placed on hold. I was left on hold for 10, 20, and even 30 minutes, the night my dad died. He was in horrible distress and when I finally got help from the Hinds social worker who called a "boss" to get me a nurses assistance, the nurse came out and was immediately shocked at how distressed my dad was. She said she had never seen anything like it and immediately called a Dr for medication instructions, which consisted of very large doses of morphine and lorazepam, which helped a little. Luckily that nurse stayed with us until my dad passed about an hour later, but my dad did not pass away peacefully under the "comfort care" of Hinds Hospice. The after hours nurses were rude, abrasive and even hung up on me when I was in desperate need of help for my beloved dad, and had been on hold for long periods of time, with no resolutions. This experience should have been very special. My dad deserved to pass under the best of care. I feel like I let him down. Please don't make the same mistake I did. Because during it, you won't be able to change/fix it. Your loved one deserves better. read more

My mom was with Hinds Hospice for a very short time but I can not praise them enough. Having to start a hospice service was not easy for us because we knew what the outcome for our mom would be. I would like to start by acknowledging the staff. Renna our nurse was amazing!! She was so caring, always asking how we were doing. She made this difficult time a little easier. She was so gently with mom, we couldn't have asked for better care. Jennifer our aide was also amazing!! She came in and talked to mom so gently and caring!! Always making sure that moms best interests were in mind. We did have to call the late night staff for mom a few times and each time the person on the other end of the phone was so nice and caring. I usually do not get into other peoples personal lives. But on this, I must share. If you find yourself with a terminally ill family member and ask your self what do I do? Call Hinds Hospice. My wife's father just passed from advanced bladder cancer and stage 4 dementia. So when this all started 11 plus months ago, I said: "I am in HVAC and work with machines". We have no idea what to do or how to do it. So a friend of ours recommended Hinds and we called. Clarissa and crew are the most professional, gifted and cohesive team I have ever witnessed. Always a kind word, a call back when promised and 24 hours a day response times. I do not have all of the names of each every professional, now friend we made. I will be adding them in the very near future. I will also be authoring a letter to the executive committee and the governing body of the Hospice. I think everyone should know..... I have been associated in various ways with Hinds Hospice for more than 17 years. On Tuesdays, along with other committed volunteers, I fold and stuff envelopes with bereavement letters to the close relatives of the person who died. Letters are received once a month for a period of 13 months, specific to the loss, whether it be a parent, child, infant, sibling, or spouse/partner. These letters which originate in the Center of Grief and Healing aid in supporting the bereaved through difficult times. Support classes specific to the loss are offered at minimal cost. Known as the Tuesday ladies, we also prepare packets of information for nurses to give to clients, at their direction. A close friend was in the Hospice Home, and I saw the care she received from the medical director, nurses, chaplains, social workers, and health aides. What I admire is that each client/patient is treated as an individual, and supported in ways comfortable to him/her. On a really personal note, my husband, who was not in hospice, died sixteen years ago. I don't remember the call, but after phoning my adult children, I phoned the hospice to say that I had found his body. Within ten minutes the volunteer director, along with Nancy Hinds, knocked at my door, a Jewish prayer in hand. Their support taught me that he could be buried in whatever our family chose, and we placed Oreos in Michael's casket, though he was a diabetic. A favorite spy novel went in, along with family photos, and drawings from grandchildren. For his burial he was dressed in jean shorts and a polo shirt, with his judge's robe alongside him because that was but one aspect of his life. I can't say enough positive comments about Hinds. Everyone associated with this hospice has compassion and an open, loving heart. Should I, at some time, need hospice care, Hinds would be my only choice. Louise F. read more

This is the MOST FABULOUS place ever. My husband is a patient here right now and has been so peaceful, comfortable and so have I and every family member that has visited. They treat you like family. The house setting is the most amazing environment for a patient to be at the end of life stage. My husband has Terminal Cancer throughout his body and bones. EXTREMELY PAINFUL. He's now in a comatose state and they baby him. Bathe him, clean him and make him smell good. Serve refreshments daily to us and the garden like setting backyard is glorious! Hinds Hospice isn't the kind of place you want to think about, but when someone in your family is faced with a terminal illness you're so grateful they're there. A 96-year-old relative was facing her end of days at the new year. Once doctors determined that she was within 30 days of dying, she was transferred from the hospital to Hinds. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect, having never been to a hospice before. Let's just say that I couldn't have been more impressed by Hinds. First off, the place is in a home, and they've worked very hard at keeping the homey feeling. There's a fire in the fireplace, the living room and den were well-appointed with comfortable chairs and sofas, and the kitchen is still a working kitchen (as demonstrated by the fact that there was a volunteer baking cookies while we were there). The decor, from the coffee cups to the footstools to the fresh flowers to the napkins looked coordinated and classy. This might seem like a small point, but these touches made me feel like these folks care. Another small but - to me at least - important point was there were no medicinal/hospital/sick people smells. The entire facility smelled like, well, smelled like a clean home. The entire staff - from the volunteers (and there were plenty) to the nurses - treated all of us with gentle compassion, friendliness, and respect. These folks really are angels of mercy. read more

Frustrating experience with Hinds Hospice following my mother's care upon discharge to a skilled nursing facility from the hospital. UCSF psych team at the hospital had adjusted my mom's psych medication and I had worked very closely with the hospital palliative team to adjust psych and pain medication so my mom was stable, comfortable. Once my mom discharged to the SNF, the Hinds Hospice MD changed most of mom's scheduled psych and pain meds to as needed and my mom's behavior was uncontrollable. Our family needed support for our Mom while she was declining and failing to thrive in the memory care home where she lived. We choose to bring in Hinds Hospice to offer Mom more support and care as well as the memory care home. We could not have been more pleased with Hinds and the care and support they provided for our Mom, the memory care facility and our family. All of the Hinds staff that helped us were professional and kind and kept us up to date on any issues or concerns. We felt so much better knowing that Mom was getting extra special care during the end of her life. Since her death, Hinds has continued their support of our Dad and my sister and I. Years ago, I attended the grief support group and found it to be extremely helpful and beneficial. It's taken me almost 2 months to write a review because the wounds still fresh and I just couldn't fathom or bring up enough courage without crying. July 15th was our initial contact with hinds to provide my amazing and strong mom a more comfortable living arrangement at our home. July 15th hinds hospice came through and made sure her equipment was home and set up before her arrival. & July 16th she was discharged and brought home. She was happy and ecstatic to finally home. We were all happy she's finally home. They've made my mom so comfortable it made me feel at ease that she's finally pain free. But with how things were going and her condition progressed we knew. Hinds nurses, aides, and employees helped us through every step. I am so appreciative that we got a hospice that we heavily available when we needed them. July 23,2017@12:30pm we lost my mother. The nurses that worked with my mother came out and helped us through the sorrow and pain. Held our hands, gave us hugs. I still had hope that we would see another year but with her stage 4 cancer it was inevitable. She is no longer in pain and she's no longer suffering. Above all, we wanted Dad to be calm and comfortable.
