But, he's a good, ethical guy, and could appreciate our situation, and so he told us how we could make the best of our situation without massive demo and conduit, and crazy expensive wiring. And, he did it all graciously with a smile. What he got out of talking himself out of this job, is complete loyalty for any and all future jobs we'll ever need. They discovered that my woodstove inserted into the fireplace had a back plate attachment that made it impossible to get to the stovepipe connection going up the chimney. They pulled out the woodstove, removed the back plate and performed a thorough cleaning. David said that the back plate was not needed, given the way the woodstove was installed, and so we left it off to simplify future cleanings. Todd Bernard is amazing…read more I had some scary crawlspace issues and had a massive estimate from a local company to address those issues, but I wanted to get a second and third and fourth opinion. Todd came to my house and spent a good chunk of time with my in my 3' crawlspace, highlighting issues he saw, telling me what they meant to him, and identifying ways to mitigate those concerns. You can tell he cares because my crawlspace is absolutely horrifying: wet, musty, tons of spiders. You can tell he knows his stuff because he was more than happy to share his thoughts and then give non-technical explanations. Long story short, most of what I need to do is above ground or not within Todd's remit, but I know that I'll be working with New England Structural Works if I have any issues in the future.

I told Bill, the office coordinator, that we have three indoor units and one outdoor unit (the condenser). He said that the total would be $385, but since I'm a new customer there would be a $100 discount, making the total $285 - his words. I agreed to these terms. At no time during our conversation was a figure of $485 uttered by him, something I would not have accepted, even with the discount. And yet, the invoice that I received two days after service completion (about 2 hours' work by one technician) asked for $485 minus the $100 discount, plus a fuel surcharge of $7.50. I called to complain that this was not the agreed-upon amount, but Bill simply denied having made that offer. But I know what I heard him clearly say. Lesson learned - never accept an unwritten quote! The work done was underwhelming - acceptable, but more or less perfunctory without much oral communication about the state of the system. I would recommend anyone needing this service to shop around and get everything in writing before agreeing to the terms. I will not be a continuing customer.
