Home was occupied for decades by descendants of its builder, a Lawyer, County Sheriff, and State Representative. During the battle of Plymouth, town residents sought protection in the basement. Musket ball holes remain in the house." There is no marker number but it was erected in 1998 by the Washington County Bicentennial Commission. The same text on both sides of both markers. It reads, "Member provincial congress, 1775; brigadier general of militia in Revolution; member N.C. conventions, 1788-1789. Home is 4 miles southeast." Isaac Gregory, born in 1737 in Pasquotank County rose from county sheriff to Revolutionary War brigadier-general despite having no prior combat experience. A committed public servant, he held various regional posts and led North Carolina militia forces at the Battle of Camden in 1780, where he was severely wounded and briefly captured. Though later accused of treason due to a forged letter, he was exonerated, though suspicions lingered. After the war, Gregory remained active in civic life, serving in the General Assembly, constitutional conventions, and as a trustee and customs official. Built in 1782 for Thomas and Penelope Barker, the home originally stood two blocks north of its current location and began as a modest Federal-style parlor wing and half hall. Penelope Barker is best known for organizing the Edenton Tea Party in 1774, a bold act of protest in which 51 women signed a petition against British taxation--making it one of the earliest political demonstrations by women in America. Unlike the Boston Tea Party, these women signed their names and sent the petition directly to King George III, drawing international attention and criticism from British newspapers. Since relocated (yes, they moved it two blocks), it now serves as Edenton's Welcome Center and the headquarters of the Edenton Historical Commission. The Tyrell County Visitor's Center is located in Columbia, NC. It was easy to find, and plenty of…read moreparking was available. You can access the buildings by stairs or a ramp. The restrooms are in one building and the Visitor's Center is in a nearby building. Both buildings were clean. A family restroom is available, too. I was immediately greeted upon entering the Visitor's Center and provided with the information I was looking for about Tyrell County. I was pointed in the right direction to get to the boardwalk and downtown, and some places were suggested to stop. I enjoyed the quilts and North Carolina items to view in the Visitor's Center. I could read about the area and its unique ecosystem. The Visitor's Center has travel information for the whole state. I was allowed to stay parked in the parking lot while I went on my walking journey. The tips and insight helped me have an enjoyable stop in Tyrell County. Although many of the businesses I had hoped to visit were not open, I can't fault the Visitor's Center for that. They might be open on my next visit.

It is notable for its red brick façade and symmetrical proportions. The most striking features include a central tower with a working clock and columned portico. Elizabeth City wasn't always the seat of Pasquotank County. From the 18th century onward, the seat moved from Brook Field to Relfe's Point, then Winfield, Nixonton, and finally Elizabeth Town in 1800 which was renamed to Elizabeth City. There is the Welcome Center there that we went into and the women were total sweethearts. It didn't appear that they got much business because they were very glad to hear that the three of us were all from different cities in Florida so when we signed the register book it was three different cities along with three different names. These women were totally in character for this part of the country and you could feel the butter melt with their warmth and kindness. The National refuge was really unexpected and quite beautiful. It was informational and educational. This was one of the best stops we unexpectedly made on our road trip. Just goes to show you never know what you're going to find when you pull over and stop in to someplace new, no matter where it is in the country. What's a girl to do? Hey, when you're on a road trip you want to stop and see and do everything so take your time and see as much as you can.

The Cashie River Center at the Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge is an amazing, little-known…read moreresource in the area. I live just 20 miles away and had overlooked the place. I didn't know what I was missing! It has a nice little museum-type display inside with info about local wildlife--animals and plants. The carry all the science type of stuff that you'd expect, and it fascinated my daughter. The people who work there are volunteers, and they are absolutely knowledgable about the area. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, I discovered that they give free nature boat rides in the summer. I will def come back for that when it starts for the season.

The museum has a ramp or stairs in the front to get to the entrance. The museum is large and is on two levels and covers all 13 of the Albemarle counties. (Northampton; Hertford; Dare; Bertie; Gates; Perquimans; Chowan; Pasquotank; Camden; Currituck; Washington; Tyrell; and Hyde), pretty much all of the northeast corner of the state. You can take the stairs up to the second level for a better look at the shad boat and quilts or use the elevator. Restrooms are located on both levels. The first floor had some traveling exhibits and the gift shop. The second floor had the permanent exhibits with the history of the area. I liked that the museum covered so many topics from the beginning to different periods of time from when Native Americans were in the region to the slavery and the Underground Railroad, Railroads; Automobiles; Firefighting; Farming; the World Wars and the Civil War; Civil Rights; the Vietnam War; the Coast Guard; different industries and tourism. The museum has many artifacts and information boards to read. The waterfowl exhibit with the bird decoys was great and showed the details of the carvings. The floating theatre inspired Show Boat. Hannah Crafts was inspiring. This museum showcases the importance of the Albemarle Sound and the region and they did a great job of preserving history and stories for future generations. I highly recommend visiting this wonderful museum.
