It reads, "The principal town of the Weapemeoc Indians, visited by Ralph Lane and his colonists in 1585-1586, stood near present-day Edenton." The Weapemeoc were an Algonquian-speaking tribal confederation that once inhabited northeastern North Carolina between the Chesapeake Bay and Albemarle Sound. Their main town, Weapemeoc, lay along the Perquimans River, and their territory included several present-day counties. Comprising tribes like the Pasquotank, Perquimans, Poteskeet, and Yeopim, they were culturally linked to both the Powhatan and Pamlico peoples. During the late 1500s, under Chief Okisco, the Weapemeoc encountered English explorers but remained largely passive, influenced by their small numbers and swampy terrain. Though pressured by the powerful Chowanoac chief Menatonon to align with the English crown, Okisco chose neutrality and retreated inland. Over the next century, the Weapemeoc Confederacy steadily declined due to disease, conflict, assimilation, and colonial expansion. By 1730, only a small group remained in a reserved settlement on the North River, and by 1735, their tribal identity had faded from official recognition. The marker has the same text on both sides. It reads, "Dempsey Burgess. Member of provincial congresses, 1775-1776; lieutenant colonel of militia in Revolution; Congressman, 1795-99. Grave is 7 miles S.E." Burgess, born in 1751 in Pasquotank County, was a Revolutionary War-era political and military leader whose early life likely centered on farming. He entered politics in 1773 and served in the provincial congresses of 1775-1776 alongside Isaac Gregory. When Camden County was established in 1777, Burgess helped plan its courthouse and jail. During the war, he held militia ranks of major and lieutenant colonel. Afterward, he resumed farming and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1795, serving two terms before retiring in 1799. I have epilepsy. I have a service dog who is a seizure alert animal. She has been protecting me for…read more10 years . She is a small 15 pound Rat Terrier. We arrive at the dock and went to Captain Mark's boat.We told him 2 seniors and my service dog. He told me we would have to wait for any other people that showed up to see if they were alright with my service animal. I told him my dog was a service animal plus I even told him she was a seizure alert dog . I even showed him her tag which I carry on her carrier with her license number and picture. He could also scan it to see all my dog's information. I told him it was against the law what he was doing but he just told me he wasn't going to argue with me.He had it turned around, we should have been allowed on the boat and anyone who was not comfortable with it could choose not to go. He said we had to wait just in case someone was afraid of dogs or had allergies. After he made me feel so uncomfortable all I wanted to do is leave this little town Edenton NC and our beautiful day was destroyed. I would tell anyone thinking of going with this man that is so prejudiced against someone with a handicap to think twice. He's not someone you would want to spend any time around! I will be reporting Captain Mark for an ADA violation so hopefully other individuals with a disability won't have to encounter this like we did.

I spotted this marker in the Edenton Historic District and had to know more. It provides a very…read morebrief synopsis of the life of a man who did great things for the United States. The marker reads, "A signer of the U.S. Constitution. Scholar, Congressman, and Surgeon General of North Carolina Militia. Home was 4 blocks SE." It is marker number A-34 and it was erected in 1949 by the North Carolina Office of Archives and History. Online, there is more information. Hugh Williamson (1735-1819), born in Pennsylvania and educated at the College of Philadelphia, initially pursued ministry before turning to medicine, earning his degree in Europe. A respected scientist and member of the American Philosophical Society, he gained recognition for his climate and electrical studies and became politically active after witnessing the unrest in Boston in 1773, later warning British officials of impending revolution. After returning to America, Williamson settled in Edenton, North Carolina, where he ran several businesses and served as surgeon general during the Revolutionary War. He entered politics in 1782, representing North Carolina in the Continental Congress and playing a key role in the Constitutional Convention of 1787. A committed Federalist, he supported ratification of the Constitution and served in the first two U.S. Congresses, though he opposed federal assumption of state debts. After marrying Maria Apthorpe and losing her shortly after childbirth, Williamson retired to New York, where he devoted himself to writing and philanthropy, including authoring A History of North Carolina and helping found the University of North Carolina. By 1701, only a handful of Yeopim warriors remained, most having relocated to a reservation in what is now Camden County. A significant Quaker population settled in the area, influencing both its cultural and political life. Their records, preserved in Virginia and North Carolina archives, offer a rich tapestry of marriages, migrations, and community life that span generations. The county itself was officially established in 1672 as one of the original precincts of Albemarle County in the Province of Carolina. In 1941, it was expanded with larger side wings and portico, followed by a rear addition in 1974. It is quite majestic and clearly reflects the power of the county courts. The county was officially formed in 1722 from Chowan Precinct, part of the larger Albemarle County established in the 1660s. It was named for James and Henry Bertie, two of the original Lords Proprietors of Carolina. The area was originally inhabited by the Tuscarora people, and its fertile lands along the Chowan, Roanoke, and Cashie Rivers made it attractive to early English settlers and traders. Windsor, the county seat, was incorporated in 1766. Early on a Monday morning, there wasn't much to see here other than the impressive building and the cupola caught by the Sun.
