My husband and I flew in from Southern CA for a wedding here and found ourselves immediately blown away by the most beautiful hotel in the smallest little town of Marion. Let me say, I have traveled 48 states and stayed in many types of inns, hotels, bed and breakfasts etc over the years and have never experienced a place like this. Between the friendly staff and many conversations over the weekend, the delicious food at the Parlour 1886, and the unique ambiance. It was truly one of a kind. What a spectacular evening away We experienced at the Elgin Hotel! We met Jennifer at the front desk and she was so helpful telling us everything we needed to know about our stay. We also made a reservation for dinner and it was so delicious! The Old Fashioned cocktails were perfectly made by the bartender too. After dinner we sat outside on the veranda as we enjoyed some wine. Then our evening in the room was peaceful and relaxing. We can't wait to come back and stay! My wife and I snuck away to this quiet town for Valentine's Day and spent a night at the Elgin Hotel - what an amazing experience! Walking into the hotel, one feels like he or she is stepping back into time, to a place reminiscent of the Gilded Age or Roaring '20s. Elegant, charming, classy...pick any of above adjectives to describe the decor. There are three floors of rooms, each with its own theme to set the tone. We actually toured all the floors as the owners have done a wonderful job of opening up the entire establishment. The only drawback of the weekend was the restaurant. While the food was delicious, there was a massive wedding party or family reunion that took all of the wait staff's attention. These people took all the service as that was the highest tip, I'm sure. In such a small town, I would imagine this place is the "go to" eating venue. Nonetheless, I would have liked to have seen better service for the price. I still recommend this place for a quiet getaway as the rooms were stellar. (some rooms only have a bath tub, so please enquire before booking if you need a shower). read more

If you combined a "historic" hotel with all the modern creature comforts of home....you would be staying at the Historic Elgin Hotel in Marion, KS! My extended family booked four suites in May, and we were AMAZED at what a fantastic property this is! We stayed during the week so the front desk wasn't manned, but we were given a code for the door and when we let ourselves in, the keys were all laid out for us on the front desk. We were surprised to see that there was an elevator, since the hotel building was built in the 1880s, but it has gone extensive renovations. In the front lobby, adjacent to the beautiful stairwell, is a gorgeous large crystal chandelier. (The hotel has a large room for private functions with several additional large chandeliers.) Everything about this hotel shows the owners' attention to detail, and Marion County is lucky to have such lovely accommodations. All parties in my group were very happy with their rooms! Ours, the Amelia Earheart Suite, was so spacious with a gigantic jacuzzi spa tub and shower stall! There was a fireplace in the bathroom which worked as an electric feature. It was a great touch to the room! We enjoyed our beautiful, fluffy robes. They were from Peacock Alley, as were the sheets, a fabulously expensive linen company! Our beds were oh so comfortable with the wonderful, upscale linens! There is a full kitchen on both the second and third floor which we were allowed to use. The kitchens have refrigerators where you can store your own food, and there are Keurig coffeemakers for your use as well. This was so fortunate, because there aren't many restaurants in the Marion and Hillsboro area! We did know ahead of time that their restaurant would not be open (open only on the weekend), but many restaurants are not open on Monday and Tuesdays! So we drove up from the Dallas, Texas area fully prepared with a big cooler of appetizers and wine/beer! We were able to sit around the tables and enjoy our own food, supplemented with a run to Pizza Hut (Hillsboro!) for the kids! There is a wonderful bakery, CB bakery, right around the corner on Main street. We would make a run there each morning for Bierocks and fantastic cinnamon rolls! For many, this was their first experience with Bierocks and we all agreed that you could not beat the original, although the breakfast Bierock came in a close second! One other thing I want to mention, is that there are many "public" rooms on the property that you are allowed to use. Because this was a family gathering, we played games in the library one night, and there were others such rooms for reading, etc. One had the feeling of having the run of a three-story house! Honestly, we will be looking for a chance to travel to Marion again in the future! We hope that this property will continue to thrive and succeed! read more

Wow. The Historic Elgin Hotel is one of the most beautiful and unique places I've ever stayed. You really feel like you've stepped back in time when you arrive. I really enjoyed the expert balance of vintage charm and modern convenience. Upon our arrival, we were given a quick tour. The staff were lovely. The first floor features a ballroom as well as a restaurant and cocktail lounge. A beautiful staircase winds toward the second and third floor guest rooms. Our room was cozy and well appointed. The bed was very comfortable. We were invited to walk around and check out some of the other rooms. They are all beautiful and each have their own unique character. Every inch of this place is seriously striking. The second floor features a full kitchen for guest use. Coffee, tea, and some light fare is available round the clock. We spent some time later in the evening out on the second floor veranda taking in the night air. This place is so relaxing. It's magical. If you're looking to get out of your room, the whole hotel boasts comfortable seating areas throughout, but the third floor offers the most. Here you'll find the guest lounge as well as the library. We really enjoyed just walking around the place. There is so much to see! Back on the first floor make sure to check out the courtyard. Comfortable seating and a relaxing air day or night. At the center of the courtyard is the game room. There's a nice pool table, darts, antique card table and board games. It's yet another wonderful amenity and a reason to get out of your room! While the Historic Elgin Hotel offers ample 19th century charm, there are plenty of modern touches as well. Wifi, key code entry to the property and, most striking to me, the fitness center. Located behind a fairly nondescript sign, the fitness center is actually several rooms and offers a lot more than what you would find at most contemporary hotels. Top notch. The Elgin's elegance, comfort, and convenience would be hard to match. It was by far one of my favorite hotels I've stayed in. I hope to be back soon.Very highly recommended. read more

Best place to stay when in Marion, Kansas! The hotel's customer service is outstanding. Their staff was so pleasant and amazingly patient with accommodating not one, but three reservation changes. The rooms and other areas very clean. So many amenities at this bed & breakfast, but mostly loved that our family in Marion was able to join us for a game night on the 2nd floor and we were able to use the 2nd floor kitchen to host them. On another evening we had a quiet night in sharing wine & getting to know other lovely out of town guests in the beautiful living room on our floor. Our family in Marion rented the beautiful hall and it was so convenient to use the hall's kitchen. This hotel will satisfy any type of stay, from business to pleasure to hosting a larger group for a reunion. This will definitely be the only place I will stay at whenever returning to Marion or any of the surrounding towns. read more

The Elgin Hotel is very comfortable and relaxing elegance at a reasonable price. I've been to many fine places, coast to coast, and none are better than this at getting away from it all. The rooms and suites are nifty enough by themselves but when combined with the plush and comfortable commons areas provide a total experience. Yet, it is all a half block from Marion's Main Street. This hotel is gorgeously restored. Touches include period furniture and uses of rooms (ballroom, library), beautiful décor, and luxurious in-room amenities. Plush everything, huge bathrooms and beds, deep windows, closet space, everything that you might need. Bonuses are smart TVs with Netflix, and the coolest, color-changing enormous jacuzzi tubs in certain rooms. A kitchen on the 2nd floor is available for light cooking and dining, but formal dining areas are available, as well. The Fitness Center equipment on the second floor is great- anyone can find something they'll like there. If you want to imagine that you're in a Miss Fisher Murder Mystery style hotel, this is the place to do it. The staff are extremely kind and very accommodating. It's a lovely place! read more

The entire hotel is decorated with beautiful pieces from the 1800's, the restaurant has amazing food, drinks and service and the welcome you get from the entire staff is something you don't find in most places anymore. This is the prettiest/nicest B&B I've ever stayed in! It's decorated beautifully without feeling cluttered. There are lots of seating areas throughout the hotel, so it was a great place for our extended family to do a getaway together. We were able to spend the evening chatting in a seating area on the second floor without being in anyone else's way. The Elgin provided complimentary wine, coffee, hot cocoa, and snacks for us. The bed in our room was extremely comfortable (which is usually not the case at B&Bs), and the room had great modern amenities (nice bathroom, smart TV, etc.). I highly recommend this hotel! Netflix available in rooms, local tv available in private sitting areas on third floor. We brought a sleep machine to help drown the noise of old hardwood floors. I would recommend breakfast at 9am sharp every morning, very yummy. There is a refrigerator on the second floor if you want to bring snacks. Grocery store and liquor store near. There is a lake with a 3mile radius about 10min away if you want a nice walk. read more

The best, most comfortable bed, exquisite decor--renovated from 1800s--outstanding period pieces. The manager left her home and went to the front desk to open up for us because it was after 9 pm when we arrived. It was a last minute reservation. Tammy could not have been any nicer, sweeter, or friendlier. Her smile made us feel so comfortable and welcome. And, she even gave us chocolates!!!
