We dropped by the Historic Washington Hotel during our section hike of the PNT and met the incredibly warm and friendly owner on our way to lunch. She gave us the lowdown on the town, invited us to the hiker lounge and made our visit to Metaline Falls a pleasant experience. The hotel also has a gift shop that sells delicious ice cream. Definitely drop by and support this hiker-friendly establishment if you get the chance!

Stopped by here after getting off the PNT. Really hiker-friendly and has great ice cream and a small gift shop.

It was super late one night a couple of summers ago and we found ourselves in the middle of nowhere without a place to stay for the night. We started frantically calling all the nearby motels to see who had vacancy. Apparently, we chose a bad night (now nearly morning!) to get lost as there was a festival of some sort in town. We called Mount Linton and they had a vacancy! Hark! Rejoice! All of that jazz. We drove toward Metaline and nearly missed the motel, despite the specific directions given to us by the friendly.ish. staff member at the Mount Linton. Upon arrival, I can't say that we were impressed pulling in. There were nothing short of a half-dozen rusty, car skeletons in the gravel parking lot. Weary from the road, we forged ahead. As we approached the squat building, the flickering of the flourescents made the scene a little eerie. As we walked into the first set of double glass doors, the smell of cat urine hit us like a brick wall. We wanted to run then, but when we saw the old, stray medical equipment graveyard across the hall, I think our fear and curiosity both kept us going. As we rounded a corner, just passed the.. uh... front desk, we looked down the hall. We saw a few of the doors to the "rooms." They were old nursing room looking doors, with festive rotting fabric covering the windows and welcome mats on the floor; one even accompanied by a cigarette butt can; Folgers, I think it was. We heard the distant movement of what was likely the proprietor, we started to panic and made a quick decision. Scared, we left a note and ran.

We planned a long weekend at a beautiful lake near Metaline Falls. We arrived late to the…read morecampground, set up the tent space and drove into town for groceries. Upon return, we found a frantic host demanding we pack up and leave the site (apparently day use only). At 11PM we headed back into town for lodging. Each of the handful of hotels within 50 miles roundly reported no vacancy. Our last hope, The Mount Linton Hotel (with no reviews) beckoned dimly. The hoarse woman on the phone acquiesced,"Well, yeah," *cough, cough* "We have a room." We rounded the bend into Metaline Falls and made a hard right into a wide, commercial gravel driveway. Rotted autos dotted the edge of the lot and a sparking farm light buzzed ominously overhead. The hair on the back of our necks stood up as we skeptically assessed the low, squalid building. I commented that it appeared to have been a nursing home back in the day. Or, you know, this is how horror movies start. Exhaustion won over doubt and we pushed open the door, stepped onto the stained and peeling linoleum, and hit an invisible wall of cat pee and stale cigarette stench. In the dim "lobby," a high counter held a dusty fake flower in a dirty vase and scattered notes in a grandmother's scrawl. No signage, no seating, no hoarse host with a vacancy. We exchanged frightened looks; What the hell IS this place? Morbid curiosity pushed us forward into a long hallway. In front of us and slightly to the left was a large, dark room (perhaps an old day room?) which served as storage for dilapidated metal hospital beds and one or two yellowed mattresses. Directly left, a never ending hall disappeared into darkness. To the right, past sparse and flickering fluorescent lights was a hallway of closed doors. In the distance, one room, it's industrial window covered by a sheet, was decorated with a rubber door mat and a butt can. We cursed excitedly in whispers. The hallway took a sharp left and we heard furniture scraping across the floor and faint grunting: perhaps the hoarse woman preparing our accommodations? My girlfriend started to frantically slap my arm. We were in full on sensory overload and fight or flight set in. Desperate, but feeling guilty for making the hoarse woman push furniture around, I grabbed one of her notes and a stubby pencil and scrawled a note of my own, "Sorry! We decided to stay somewhere else. Sorry! Thank you!" We dashed to the car, hushedly laughing hysterically, hearts pounding, and sprayed gravel in our wake. Even at midnight, in the middle of nearly nowhere, we intended to stay somewhere, ANYWHERE, else. In hindsight, I wish I had taken pictures. Surely this idea could be pitched to a film maker documenting the eeriest places on earth. This hotel gets five stars- but only if you're filming a horror movie.

I stayed here before, as it's inexpensive and fit my need for a place to sleep while enjoying the area. This time the place was different. First of all, there were thousands of mosquitoes, due to the high water in the area. No control was used at all, and upon entering our room, the swarm came inside. My friend received 35 bites the first night, and a few more the second. In back of the motel was a ditch running towards the highway full of gray water. It appeared they were having issues with the septic tank/sewer. Upon entering the shower, the water smelled enough like rotten eggs to make me retch. That smell stayed on my body all day. The second day I didn't shower. The first 10 minutes we were there the toilet plugged and we were offered a plunger to fix and clean up the over run toilet. On the morning we left, I had been up all night with diarrhea, so we were didn't stop at the office. When I called and ask to speak with the manager..they said she would have to call me back. She never did. This was in 4th of July, and all other motels were booked. We were 90 miles from other services. I would not recommend this motel at all. Could be pleasant if effort was applied..none was offered. Shame !!

I was there to ride my Triumph Tiger motorcycle on the many deep forest roads, while my daughter tended to business in the area. The best thing is the room we had was fantastically clean. The bathroom passed my daughters inspections with flying colors! That's a first! The beds felt new. Room had microwave, refrigerator, flat screen TV and dish network TV. You want a good clean place to stay, this is it. Also, very quiet. Mostly workers from the Mine or Box Canyon Dam or Boundary Dam on temporary assignments. So they are in bed early and up early, then off to work. Management was very friendly and knowledgeable about area. I was impressed, and it's hard to impress me. A 20 second walk then you're down on the river. If I ever need to be in the area again this is where I'm going to stay for sure.

Riverview Motel is a great place to stop for a night or two for a clean room when touring this part of Northeast Washington. Beautiful scenery that is right along the Pend Oreille River (pronounced Pond Oray) on the International Selkirk Loop. Motel rooms include a good sized small fridge/freezer, toaster oven and microwave and coffee maker and nice flat screen tv with lots of channels. They have guest laundry facilities too, so a great place to stop and clean up a bit if you're on an extended tour. Tip: request one of the "end" rooms that has a view of the Pend Oreille river. (there are two view rooms and well worth the extra $10) you get a view of the river and a deck with a small outdoor table and two chairs. Its nothing fancy but it is very clean and very well maintained. There isn't much in the way of food offered in the town of Ione which is why this motel is great. They provide two BBQ grills for guest use and the rooms are outfitted for you to bring in your own food for a short stay. Grab some frozen-delight dinner from the grocery store in Ione and grill/microwave whatever you need. They have one covered picnic table on the edge of the parking lot overlooking the river. Lots of wildlife, trees and fresh air along this scenic highway route, (This weekend we saw a moose with calf, black bear and turkeys!) In the past, we've seen fox, brown bear, whitetail deer, elk and tons of turkeys. The Lions Club runs a scenic railway tour and Boundary Dam is very interesting to visit.
