Why? This is a Sichuan restaurant, and while they may offer sweet and sour chicken, almond boneless chicken, and whatever other American-Chinese dishes you fancy, those in the know come for the distinctive numbing ma-la spice of the region. Southeast Michigan, being in the midwest, is generally lacking in really traditionally fiery foods. As such, Ypbor was such a delightful change of pace I was tempted to give the place five stars. However, that desire was really about the cuisine and not the execution. The food is good to be sure, I'm going to return again and again, but there are definitely elements that are lacking. While I do not want to linger on the negative, the noodles could be improved, the dan-dan was super wet and more like a soup, and while the salt miner's chicken was fine and I'm glad I tried it once, it's decidedly not a must order dish. That said, the Sichuan poached fish is great. I was also absolutely charmed by the Spicy Chinese Broccoli in a Wok, which while under the vegetable section contains a generous amount of sliced pork belly. Part of the charm was that this was not the "Chinese Broccoli" I was expecting. The broccoli itself was more like traditional broccoli, but white in color. Flavors, textures, and heat were all fantastic. The menu is long, and I'm looking forward to exploring more of it. Until then, I recommend checking out the newer, cleaner, friendlier Ypbor, and getting outside of your comfort zone with trying legit Sichuan foods.
