Few things make me sadder than a review update with fewer stars than the original. After finding China Chef a few years ago, I felt like I had finally gotten my "go-to" Chinese carry out place. Location was convenient, prices were reasonable, and food tasted good every time. The tide started to turn earlier this year. I ordered my favorite dish on several occasions, and it tasted different. Something had changed in the sauce, and the meat seemed to be more gristly than before. I also saw the prices jump by several dollars, even for basic lunch combos. My most recent (and maybe last) trip included a small wonton soup and a small fried rice at lunchtime. Those are pretty simple items in small sizes, but it cost me over $12. The rice was disappointing, really lacking flavor. With the increase in prices and decrease in quality, I guess the search is back on for a go-to spot.

I had a taste for some Chinese food. I was shocked that my regular location was closed. I did a search for nearby locations and this popped up. I placed my order and was told that it would take 15 minutes. It sits right off of Washtenaw and is easy to find. There was plenty of parking as most businesses were closed. I walked in and noticed that there was a menu just fir seafood items. Crab legs, shrimp, etc. I will definitely have to check this out one day. The workers were being a film based area as protection for Covid. I ordered the Moo Goo Gai Pan combination which is sauted chicken with vegetables such as snow peas, water chestnuts bamboo shoots. I have not had it in a while and decided to try it. The food had a different type of smell to it that was not exactly inviting. I read that this could be from the amount of msg that is used. This smell and taste I did not prefer. Next time I would subtract the msg. They do give you alot of food and especially the fried rice. I'm use to being asked the type of meat and the default usually being pork. In this case it seemed to be only fried rice. It also came with the typical egg roll. Overall it was ok. I do prefer my regular spot but if I was just in the area I would order but probably not this particular selection.

The China Chef Restaurant is a classic family owned restaurant that has been around for roughly the past 20 years at this location on M-17 (Washtenaw Ave). When I was in bowling class while at EMU, we would often order take-out from this establishment as the place was well known on campus for serving portions that are huge to say the least, but at very reasonable prices that wouldn't break your piggy bank, especially if you're a college student on a budget. I decided to stop in and play place a visit for lunch yesterday. I ordered a dish that had beef, chicken and shrimp, with many different kinds of vegetables. It was very delicious, and I brought the rest of it home with me for dinner. However, my only complaint was the soup. When it comes to Americanized Chinese fare, I really like a bowl of soup, especially in the colder months, and Egg Drop is one of my favorites. Ironically, the soup I received looked good, but tasted very bland in comparison, especially when compared to the the Chinese buffet located across the street. They must have forgotten a key ingredient when making it.

Just another normal Inexpensive Chinese place which gets you huge portions or good combo deals. Lunch Combo deals are $4.89 which includes rice and egg roll. Same combo deals for dinner starts at $6 and go to $8 based on meat options. Pros: -------- Inexpensive Good Combo deals Free Parking Quick Service Cons: --------- None Updating this review as someone called "Adam" from Dearborn with a pic threating to give 5 star through compliment. Hence reducing it to 1 star.

It's not to my liking none of the Midwest Chinese taste like back home in Tampa . Don't mean that people around here wouldn't like it ....

Oh hell yeah, I came here last Friday by high recommendation from my friend who is a local here and…read moreshe told me this was the original location and just better. Their online menu does not have the pictures that the in store one has and woowee it is a lot of choices of noodles! Amongst the 4 of us, we ordered the pork tip noodle, the Peking pork (zhajiangmian), hot oil wide noodle, beef tendon knife noodle. YUM! The noodles are handmade, handpulled and you can customize the shape and thickness you want! The portions as you can see are massive and the prices are very reasonable! $14/$15 a bowl! My pork rib tips were too tough but still seasoned. I would say their Peking style zhajiangmian is pleasantly less authentic and I liked this version better than the original! It included a braised full egg, and not too much of the cloyingly sweet and intense sauce. We ordered and within 2 minutes we were served fresh bowls of piping hot noods. Our server was efficient, warm, knowledgeable and bilingual. She said I looked like a popular Hong Kong singer, like OMG what a cute compliment! There was convenient parking and it was really close to my friend's house. Highly recommend!

There are a few things that one should note right off the bat:…read more 1) Ypbor Yan moved buildings a couple of years ago, so old reviews that discus the interior space are very much outdated. 2) Their new sign reads Ypbor FM as they have a *F*ood *M*useum in the entry way, but the "museum" is both easy to overlook and certainly not the main draw of the business. 3) Look at the most popular dishes on Yelp and take many of the reviews with a few grains of salt. Why? This is a Sichuan restaurant, and while they may offer sweet and sour chicken, almond boneless chicken, and whatever other American-Chinese dishes you fancy, those in the know come for the distinctive numbing ma-la spice of the region. Southeast Michigan, being in the midwest, is generally lacking in really traditionally fiery foods. As such, Ypbor was such a delightful change of pace I was tempted to give the place five stars. However, that desire was really about the cuisine and not the execution. The food is good to be sure, I'm going to return again and again, but there are definitely elements that are lacking. While I do not want to linger on the negative, the noodles could be improved, the dan-dan was super wet and more like a soup, and while the salt miner's chicken was fine and I'm glad I tried it once, it's decidedly not a must order dish. That said, the Sichuan poached fish is great. I was also absolutely charmed by the Spicy Chinese Broccoli in a Wok, which while under the vegetable section contains a generous amount of sliced pork belly. Part of the charm was that this was not the "Chinese Broccoli" I was expecting. The broccoli itself was more like traditional broccoli, but white in color. Flavors, textures, and heat were all fantastic. The menu is long, and I'm looking forward to exploring more of it. Perhaps there is a way to make a 5* meal from the options, and nothing would make me happier than to share that with you all at some point down the road. Until then, I recommend checking out the newer, cleaner, friendlier Ypbor, and getting outside of your comfort zone with trying legit Sichuan foods. Just remember, everything is intended for family style eating, so one entree for every two people is plenty. Leftovers are fine, but this food is always better when it's freshly prepared, as opposed to traditional "Chinese Takeout" which some might argue was never really all that great in the first place.

I won't comment on the food, since everyone's tastes are different. I'll just focus on the service…read more I ordered 13 dishes, and at the end the waitress said everything had been served. However, I clearly remembered that two of my favorite dishes were missing. After I pointed this out, they were brought out. Later, after we got home, my child mentioned that one of the dishes he ordered never arrived. If you're ordering many dishes, it's best to keep track of what you ordered, as items may be missed.
