Great place, local business, and my go-to place in Ypsi-Arbor for New-York-Style Szechuan. The dining room is nice now (it was a little sketchy before), portions are good for the price. There may occasionally be communication issues, and it's "standard fare" for one of these strip mall places so don't expect much in terms of innovation or surprise, but if this is what you want, this is, in my opinion, one of the best places to get it. They've been my go-to Chinese takeout for years. But no more. The egg roll wraps are now thick, dense, heavy flour-and-water garbage. They used to be thin, light, just a little bubbly and delightfully crispy. They are now hard to bite and chew, and awful to swallow. They used the same thick-heavy-dense junk as the "crunchies" for the hot and sour soup. Awful. As was the soup itself -- which was neither hot nor sour. At all. Few things make me sadder than a review update with fewer stars than the original. After finding China Chef a few years ago, I felt like I had finally gotten my "go-to" Chinese carry out place. Location was convenient, prices were reasonable, and food tasted good every time. The tide started to turn earlier this year. I ordered my favorite dish on several occasions, and it tasted different. Something had changed in the sauce, and the meat seemed to be more gristly than before. I also saw the prices jump by several dollars, even for basic lunch combos. My most recent (and maybe last) trip included a small wonton soup and a small fried rice at lunchtime. Those are pretty simple items in small sizes, but it cost me over $12. The rice was disappointing, really lacking flavor. With the increase in prices and decrease in quality, I guess the search is back on for a go-to spot. read more

I had a taste for some Chinese food. I was shocked that my regular location was closed. I did a search for nearby locations and this popped up. I placed my order and was told that it would take 15 minutes. It sits right off of Washtenaw and is easy to find. There was plenty of parking as most businesses were closed. I walked in and noticed that there was a menu just fir seafood items. Crab legs, shrimp, etc. I will definitely have to check this out one day. The workers were being a film based area as protection for Covid. I ordered the Moo Goo Gai Pan combination which is sauted chicken with vegetables such as snow peas, water chestnuts bamboo shoots. I have not had it in a while and decided to try it. The food had a different type of smell to it that was not exactly inviting. I read that this could be from the amount of msg that is used. This smell and taste I did not prefer. Next time I would subtract the msg. They do give you alot of food and especially the fried rice. I'm use to being asked the type of meat and the default usually being pork. In this case it seemed to be only fried rice. It also came with the typical egg roll. Overall it was ok. I do prefer my regular spot but if I was just in the area I would order but probably not this particular selection. read more

IT WAS NOT SHELLED!! so you can't enjoy the nice coating because it's lost when you peel the shell off. You can't enjoy eating it, because it's so much work. The China Chef Restaurant is a classic family owned restaurant that has been around for roughly the past 20 years at this location on M-17 (Washtenaw Ave). When I was in bowling class while at EMU, we would often order take-out from this establishment as the place was well known on campus for serving portions that are huge to say the least, but at very reasonable prices that wouldn't break your piggy bank, especially if you're a college student on a budget. I decided to stop in and play place a visit for lunch yesterday. I ordered a dish that had beef, chicken and shrimp, with many different kinds of vegetables. It was very delicious, and I brought the rest of it home with me for dinner. However, my only complaint was the soup. When it comes to Americanized Chinese fare, I really like a bowl of soup, especially in the colder months, and Egg Drop is one of my favorites. Ironically, the soup I received looked good, but tasted very bland in comparison, especially when compared to the the Chinese buffet located across the street. Been a customer as far back as 22 years ago. It was my absolute favorite Chinese and I used to have it about once a week, sometimes twice/week. Brought friends here and out of town guests and everyone raved about it. Portions have become smaller and prices have gone up in the past 3-4 years which is typical in this inflationary economy but it's the flavor of the food that's gone down some. The sauces are not as flavorful and either bland or too salty. I've ordered cashews twice to be added and both times they were not added even tho I paid extra for them. Both times were carryout so just let it go. Still a filling meal but wish the sauces had the flavor from when I first started eating at China Chef. I don't go very often anymore as it's not the same as it was but just this week when I got carryout, my cashews were missing again. read more

I have diet restrictions which limit many choices on most restaurants' menus, so I tend to try to find at least a few things from a menu and I stick with that. Yes it can be boring, but I have been dealing with it long enough that I don't pay much attention to it anymore. Which now brings me to this particular review; one of my go-to places for Chinese food is "Lucky 7", and I really enjoy their combo fried rice meal in the quart size. Because it's a combo it has chicken, shrimp and pork and it is a decent meal by itself. I had also been wanting to try out China Chef, and then one day Lucky 7 was closed for a Holiday so I tried China Chef out and ordered their combo fried rice. It was a major let down. First off China Chef's combo fried rice is more expensive than Lucky 7, that gave me a moment of pause, but then I figured it would probably be better than the significantly less expensive dish by Lucky 7, but it was not better. In fact it was a total bust. After tipping the driver, my bill was $20 something and yet when I opened my carton, it was filled with white rice almost exclusively! There was one small bit of chicken, one shrimp and no pork. Even the bok choy was barely sprinkled in. White rice on most Chinese restaurant menus is usually a dollar or two, and that's what they gave me to fill the order. If it would have been 100% white rice then it would make sense that it was just a mistake. But China Chef added a little bok choy and a couple scraps to make it look like it wasn't just white rice, which it was. It felt like being robbed, cheated and lied to. I will not give them any more of my hard earned money. I have minute rice in the pantry, I would've been better off saving my money and just eat some plain white rice. If you check out my other reviews, you will notice that I don't write very many negative reviews. I have managed restaurants in the past and I know what its like trying to run a successful restaurant. Having said that, I just cannot and will not accept this. read more

Finding decent vegetable fried rice has been difficult. I think China Chef will be my new go to! The fried rice tasted great! It was prepared just as as we ordered. It arrived early. We were getting a little hungry so I thought an order of pork fried rice would hit the spot. I also ordered sweet and sour pork. When I went to get my order it was chicken instead. The lady their was very apologetic and offered to correct my order without hesitation. I decided to go with the chicken. Not a big deal. Well the pork fried rice was just ok. The sweet and sour chicken was your typical American/Chinese disappointment. The fried rice that came with the chicken was only tossed with soy sauce. Thus virtually flavorless. If you guys are expecting a proper sit down restaurant with fancy silver and table clothes, this is def not a place. But on the bright side, the food is very affordable and the taste was pretty good for what you pay. You could check the portions in my picture. We ordered crag ragoon which was 1.50$ for a good sized pieces of 2. The fried rice wasnt the best i had but its worth for the prices they put up. A lot of options to choose from the menu. If you're looking for a mom and pop Chinese restaurant, it's China Chef. It's small and in a strip mall, but the food is super high quality and also you get huge portions! Some of the menu is in Chinese, so it does make it a bit difficult to order, but they do have an English menu up at the counter under the glass. They also have lunch specials that are a bang for your buck! My favorite is the beef noodle soup - super authentic to Taiwan beef noodle soup. The curry rice noodles are also really delicious. This is definitely a place you don't want to pass up - dot judge a book by its cover! read more

Used to come here when I was in college at least once a week. Today I was in the area and decided to have a quick inexpensive lunch with my son. I got the pork in garlic sauce and the quality was as good as I remember. My son had the general tso tofu and it was honestly some of the best tofu I have ever had- it was crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside and just overall I think I liked his tofu even more than my own meal. I've gotten delivery from these folks a few times in the past 4-5 months and for the most part, I like them. Some of the dishes they have lean towards authentic, which is nice. Their salt & pepper chicken is packed with jalapeños and has a nice mix of spicy and tasty. Taiwanese rice noodles look plain but are secretly flavorful. The sauteed string beans suffer a bit from being delivered (cooked string beans can wilt easily if not eaten right away) but have an excellent taste. The pork ribs with special sauce are good but not the greatest. The beef in the beef chow fun has a nice oyster-sauce flavor to it. I tried a few things from the definitely-Americanized part of the menu -- egg rolls, fried wontons, hot & sour soup -- and they weren't bad but they weren't special. The best I could say is that the wonton order is small in number but the wontons themselves are enormous. My biggest complaint would be that sometimes the deep fried things -- especially the chicken in the salt & pepper chicken dish -- are dry and seem like they'd been previously cooked and then reheated for the dish. However, with the exception of the egg rolls, I haven't found the deep fried pieces very greasy. Overall, I'll be ordering their food again. read more

Judge it for what it is (a grubby strip-mall American Chinese restaurant that opened in 1990 or so, wasn't particularly adventurous then, and hasn't much elaborated since) and it's great. The sub-five-buck lunch specials are a key part of their business, for people looking to fill their bellies cheap, thinking "Yeah, I almost assuredly won't regret this. Probably." Meets expectations. I generally get canned soda here, though. Their fountain soda hasn't been great, and a couple of times I've been served a cracked plastic cup. Cookies have long been displayed in a grease-sodden Children's Motrin box. I can't tell you why that decision was made. I can't tell you why that decision hasn't been revisited. So. I really would have liked to give this a rating of 2.5 stars since I'm choosing to round up. I tried the rainbow chicken from a catered event and it tasted great! There were tons of veggies and a wonderfully flavorful brown sauce! It was really tasty and it made me want to go back and get my own personal order. So, one day I went after church and got the rainbow chicken lunch special. I appreciated that you could get the lunch special even on the weekend because many places only run specials through the week. The lunch special came with the rainbow chicken, fried rice, and an egg roll for $4.29. You can't really beat that deal. Upon opening my order, I saw that the fried rice was just that...fried rice. I saw that it said fried rice but I was expecting at least some sort of veggie medley in it. I would have liked some carrots, bean sprouts, snap peas...something to add a little bit more flavor. I guess I could have upgraded to a veggie or chicken or shrimp fried rice but at that price, you can't really complain. When I got home and tried my food for the first time, it didn't taste quite as good as the catered food. It had a slightly off, weird aftertaste that's hard to describe. I guess I can best describe it as not the freshest. Perhaps this is just the case for lunch specials and not the catered food. It's a good bang for your buck but in the future, I think I'll probably opt to pay a little bit more for more flavorful rice and fresher tasting ingredients. read more

Short on funds, then go here and get something to eat! I think their lunch is still $3.98... I used to go there twice a week when I worked at EMU. They used to know my order, but I don't go there anymore since I live on west side of Ann Arbor. Try their curry chicken. They cook the chicken in hot water before they stir fry it... it also has lot of oil, so you need to watch out. I also like their general tsou, but if you are watching your figure, stay away from battered and deep fried food! Even if they are good!! They used to serve salad when you dined at the restaurant, but not sure if they still do that. If you are low on funds and want Chinese food, then go here! We should've known better than to order on a weekday, and we were sorry we did. Both our chicken dishes were refried and so crunchy/coated that most of it went to waste. We know what happens- you have a lot of chicken dishes and not a lot of traffic on weekdays, so a lot of it sits around cooked waiting for an order. Then you throw it in the fryer again to reheat it. Just understand that your quality suffers and so will your traffic. We're not sure we'll come back. read more

I physically feel ill from I kid you not maybe 5 bites of their food. EVERYTHING from the food itself to the packaging was COVERED in oil. I spent 20$ on everything so I felt bad not taking a few bites. I wish I would have just thrown it away. The soup had a FILM of oil at the top (see in picture, it's thick). The wanton package had so much oil I didn't even try and eat any. The fried rice was cold and also oily as hell. Spring rolls tasted like they were fried in oil from the 80s. Old. Gross. Oh and the cherry on top. The fortune cookie didn't even have a fricken fortune. Ignore the good reviews. Don't make the same mistake I did. First stop: ordered a small String beans and fried dumplings for take out. The string beans were fantastic and the dumplings were very good too. They were gyoza (little dumplings) not the doughy fist sized potstickers as pictured on the wall behind the counter. While waiting for my order, I watched the steady stream of patrons come and go. They are popular. Small place, right in the front building off Washtenaw. Not in the shopping center. I really crave those string beans again, and would happily become a regular customer but the lack of cleanliness of the place is what is keeping me away. I came across China Chef back in 2000 when I moved to Ypsi. This was my favorite place to go for Chinese food. I took friends and family there when they came to visit cause the food was so good and the portions were great! About 6-8 years ago the prices started to go up which was understandable but now the prices are double what they were. The lunch special used to be $3.25 now it's $6.65 and you hardly get any meat with veggies....it's mostly rice and in smaller containers. The little plastic containers they use now are half the size of the ones they used to have. It used to be that 50% was the meat and veg, and the other 50% was rice. Now.....it's a much smaller sized container of which 75% is rice and only 25% is meat and veg and there isn't enough sauce to use for all that rice. The flavor of the sauces has changed also. The sauces taste like a salty Asian sauce of some sort but not specific to a certain dish. I usually get Chicken and Broccoli, General Tso's Chicken or the Rainbow Chicken and the sauces all taste the same. I'm not sure what has changed over the years if it was management or different cooks but it's definitely not the same as it used to be. It's the closest easy-to-get Chinese food near me which is why I continue to go but I may have to start looking around to see what else is available near me. read more
