This HMV is alright. I personally don't like it because it is a stand alone and not part of any mall. Usually when I check out an HMV it will be when I am passing by it in a shopping mall and then I will find something I like. This one just seems like an inconvenience. Like most HMV's they have a huge selection but the staff at this one doesn't really help much if you need it. I'm not a big fan of HMV. They can have some OK deals on DVDs at times but, for the most part, I think they are overpriced. I will occasionally go in to look around and see if I can find any good deals but I almost always walk out empty handed. The staff are never really happy to help you out. It feels as though they are there just to listen to music and get paid to do it. I hate to say it but I have never had good customer service at any HMV. I also don' t know how long they will be around for. It seems to me that people don't buy a lot of music in hard copy anymore. IF people aren't downloading, they are buying from iTunes (like me) because it is always cheaper. Then I can burn it onto a CD if I want. If you do want your music in hard copy, HMV does have a lot to choose from. All their music is divided by genre to make things easy (for you and the staff). But if you are on a budget, I would look elsewhere - maybe Walmart or somewhere like that. read more

HMV - Music & DVDs Near Me - Edmonton, Alberta

I came here tonight. I live near the area of South Common, but have never ventured out to this HMV location before as I tend to frequent the WEM location because of selection. Anyways, tonight I decided to wander in because I couldn't find a few titles at WEM last week, so I wanted to see if I would have luck here before I hit Amazon online. This location is quite a bit smaller than WEM so as I walked in I already had lower expectations, and I was right. As my nick name implies I am a "metal chick" throughout, so I went looking for the Heavy Metal section first off, they had 3 panels of CD's, which is not a lot considering WEM has about 20. They did not have any of the titles I was looking for, but I did stumble onto Iced Earth's latest CD which I wanted to get anyways so I purchased that along with 3 other CD's that I was curious about but not planned purchases. This location basically does not have a large selection of music in general, what is annoying is they will have 20 CD's of one band that is it is considered a "Best seller" to fill up spaces to make it look like they have lots of inventory. For example you do not need 20 copies of Metallica's Lulu to fill up the entire Metallica slot. In Edmonton, you will NOT sell 20 copies in one day, give me a break out of one location - especially this one. This location isn't heavy on it's gaming or DVD section either, so I am not quite sure how they are surviving in a rent heavy South Common. But seeing how their counterpart in Vancouver is closing down in January and predicting more store closures, this location will probably be a casualty as well. Compared to WEM, this location just doesn't cut it at all. I only gave it three stars because of convenience, friendly clerk and because they had some new cool coffee mugs with Iron Maiden and Judas Priest I haven't seen before. Ah, HMV......our relationship has been a long one. I remember shopping at HMV way back when it was Mr. Sound (yeah, I'm old). I don't buy a lot of music on CD these days, unless it's something that I can't find on iTunes. I go to HMV for DVD's and Blu-Rays. While it's a little more expensive than Best Buy, I find that HMV tends to offer a wider selection. I'm a huge fan of foreign films (martial arts flicks from Japan, China, and Korea specifically), and HMV seems to be the only place I can find the more obscure titles. read more

This and the WEM HMV are the last of the dying breed. They had World Wide Rebel Songs right when it was released. That made me happy. Though other HMV's devote about one of those four foot blocks to music these day, downtown still has a collection larger than my own personal collection! read more

I think much like all HMV's in this city their main selling point is the broad range of genre's they offer in their music and dvd's. I am always impressed with how much they carry in area's like anime and foreign films. They do offer some good sales occasionally like the 2 for $10 the 2 for $15 and the 2 for $20 but the titles usually offered in the sale section are much older and could be found at Walmart in the $5.00 bin. Ironically in my opinion their most reasonably priced items can be found in their small book section. The titles there are unique and sometimes hard to find in your everyday book store. The thing about this chain however that really makes my head spin...especially at this store in particular....is their complete lack of customer service. I am pretty sure I could take my top off and go running up and down the isles with a lampshade on my head and nobody would approach me. It's like those people are chained to that front desk and can't seem to move past it and if by some chance you happen to see someone in the pink and black HMV shirt actually out on the sales floor it is because they are making a MAD DASH to their back room desperately trying to get there before someone attempts to even make eye contact with them. Lord help you if you actually venture up to the front and ask them a question about a particular title! If the answer cannot be found by typing it into their computer then the answer simply does not exist! No other stores will be called or other staff members asked. If your looking for a large selection and simply must shop HMV then go to WEM. If you want decent service go to Londonderry or Bonnie Doon. If you want to make your head hurt go here.... read more

I've been to all the HMV's stores in this city over the various years and I think this one is the smallest. I walked in here and was shocked. I thought it would be much bigger given the zoo called South Edmonton Common. I've seen candy shops bigger! Anyway, if you like Top 40 and movies with "The Rock" in them then you'll have a good time, otherwise... pass. read more

Well I went to HMV yesterday and I didn't find they were very helpful. I was searching for hocus-pocus and I finally found someone to help me and it was almost like an inconvenience for them to help me. I wish they were more helpful for the simple fact something that would've taken me 5 minutes to find it instead it took me 20 minutes trying to find where it would be because it wasn't in alphabetical order so therefore the process was longer because I had to wait for someone to come and show me where they would be. To add onto this I found the movie that I was looking for but it was two for $20 or $15 each there was no other movie at that time that I would want so I would have to pay $15 for a movie that is in a bit older (well 1992 I believe) instead of buying it from say Walmart on line for five dollars. So in saying this I do realize that the store does not control the price . I'm giving them a bad rating for is that it took them like 10 to 15 minutes to come help me when there was nobody else in the store. On the same token though I do recommend HMV for finding older movies because they have a great service that you are able to order an older movie through them that they might not have you might just have to pay extra for so for that I will give them two stars. But first as far as their service is concerned I would have to give them maybe two because once they came and help me it was fine but waiting as a customer for 10 to 15 minutes for someone to come see if I need help is a bit much when they are just standing at the till talking amongst themselves. read more
