    Well..,the service was friendly. It did take longer than expected for them to serve me just noodles and they got my order wrong. Luckily I was hungover slightly and couldn't care less. I also like tripe despite not asking for it. It isn't the greatest place for pho, but the broth wasn't bad. It was a bit on the sour side which was different. The basil it came with had some dark splotches which miffed me. I worked around it. The bowl of pho was 12$ for two types of meat which is a bit pricey. Given that it was WEM I wasn't surprised. They didn't charge for tea, which is a nice thing and took a bit out of the price sting. Given that you could literally just go to T&T and buy a curry bun for like 2$ I'd probably never come here again. It isn't a bad place, just a weird location so close to cheap eats at T&T. I have yet to try the one downtown. Will do to compare and contrast.

    One of the worst Vietnamese vermicelli dishes that I ever had. I ordered F6 - vermicelli with everything - and it was a combination of undercooked and overcooked food. The grill that the meat was cooked on was not cleaned so there's tons of old burnt residue flakes all over my food. The meat ends are burnt, too, but thicker meat slices are still a bit undercooked on the inside, meaning the cook grilled on too high of a temperature. The thin meat pieces were tough and dry - very jerky like. There is a lot of meat but not enough vegetables to balance it out. I didn't finish my food because the build up of burnt food flakes on my tongue was too much for me. At least the noodles were done right ... For $16, I expected them to clean the shrimp - the waste vein was still attached. The shrimp was also way overcooked. Too expensive for poorly cooked food.

    I'd really like to give them a better review but I don't think sweeping the floor while customers are eating gives them any more stars. We ordered the hoang long salad and it was delicious; just Iike an inside out salad roll. We also ordered the chicken noodle (chicken pho) and war wonton. The chicken noodle was a bit of a disappointment. It didn't have the usual likings of a beef pho (like most other places) but instead they put lettuce and some green onion in it. The war wonton was better, there were only a handful of wontons but the fresh veggies made it better.

    This place is a great little diamond in the rough. Not many people know about this pace, but they should. It's never busy when I go here but I'm hoping people will find out about it and fill it up every day and night because it's really good. The best way I can think of to describe this place is to say that it's the best of both worlds - Vietnamese and North American. The food is traditional Vietnamese food and it is delicious. The service is North American service - meaning that they don't just drop off your food and never talk to you again. They check on you and they give good service. The prices are good too. This is a great place all around - try it!

    Bad customer service. Staffs are not friendly. We ordered ice tea. They brought out a can of ice tea with the straw stuck underneath of the can opener. The straw had no paper cover at all. Sanitization. In ordered broken rice with four toppings for $15. My husband ordered Pho with two toppings. The BBQ meat on my plate was full of fat. There was no meat at all. Other restaurants give customers free soup when you ordered broken rice; not this place. They charged $3 for a tiny bowl of soup (beef broth). Staffs spoke foul language in Vietnamese. This is not a good place to dine in. They used to have a big place but not they shrunk down to 1/3 or the previous space. This means they have terrible food and customer service.

This is one of my favourite vietnamese places for soup and appetizers. The rice and vermicelli dishes are mediocre in comparison so make sure to order what they specialize in. If I come with a big group I like to order as many appetizers as possible as it's similar to vietnamese street foods like crepes, tapioca dumplings and deep fried goodies. All of it is authentic and delicious. My must orders here are the duck salad and soup combo. It's what I come here for as no other place in edmonton has it on the menu that I know of. And it's pretty darn delicious. If I don't get that. The bun bo hue is loaded with so many meats that I never can finish it! I can't wait to go back to this locally owned business run by a family. Although service is not the greatest. They do provide whatever you need if you ask for it. They definitely won't bother you when you visit here. As most people just eat quick and leave. It's not one of those places you sit and chat and have drinks at. But for what they offer. It's affordable fast convenient and authentic. One of the best in edmonton!

The menu is very typical of Vietnamese noodle houses, featuring a good selection of pho noodle soup, vermicelli noodle bowls, and rice dishes. I opted for a bowl of pho with medium sliced beef and brisket. My soup was full of meat which was reasonably tender and lean, and came in a broth that was well-seasoned. Colleen, my co-Volunteer Coordinator, ordered a bowl of Thai spicy pho, and she ordered it without any meat. She was happy with the flavour of her soup and its abundance of noodles. I started with a green onion cake, finding the two large rings of fried dough and green onions to be large and not too greasy, as well as a bit cheaper than I've had elsewhere. I also decided to do something I rarely do when I order pho - even though I find the complimentary green tea and broth from the soup to be more than enough liquid intake for one meal, I decided to try one of the iced drinks. Being a dreary winter day I felt some extra vitamin C was in order, and opted for a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice. It was incredibly fresh and full of pulp - I literally felt like I was drinking an orange in liquid form. Prices are in line, if not lower, than other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. Our entire meal, which also included a can of pop for Colleen, cost less than $25 before the tip. Service was fast and friendly and neither of us had any complaints about the food. Winter is the perfect time for a steaming bowl of pho, so consider heading to Viet Huong.

We've got it all. And it's the best of the best. XO Bistro + Bar throws their name into the ring with a more elevated and modern Vietnamese dining experience, demonstrating that there's a sophisticated side to Viet food that demands representation as well. VUE Weekly loved this restaurant and named them #1 Best Vietnamese, #1 Best Late Night/All Night, and #1 Best Happy Hour in 2018. First opened in 2017 and now with two locations, I visited the original Downtown spot on a Saturday evening, anxiously anticipating the symphony of flavours ahead. XO Bistro is in good company on Edmonton's famous boardwalk street which is lined with a collection of many popular restaurants. The parking is a nightmare and the small handful of street parking spots always seem to be taken. But you'll figure it out. With its proximity to the ICE District you can easily imagine that this restaurant has been able to take advantage of the pre-game dinner crowd and post-game spillover from the Moss Pit. The restaurant is larger than you might imagine, with its soaring second-storey ceiling and filled with dark moody finishes and an impressive bar completing the lounge vibe. However, the real show-stopper is the life-sized cherry blossom tree right in the entranceway, covered in pink blossoms. This tree serves as a major focal point and it's difficult to take your eyes off of it! The servers are cheerful and friendly, and although there were no window tables available we were seated comfortably. Priding themselves on their cocktail program, I knew that an XO Original was a must and soon I found the Good Morning Vietnam (Gin, Soho, hibiscus, lime juice, lychee puree - $15.00) in my hand. A cocktail to match the restaurant perfectly! I loved that this beverage was fresh and fruity and wasn't too strong. Pretty and drinkable, the sweet flavour of lychee took the lead while tart notes from the lime and hibiscus leveled the beverage out. Without a doubt, the correct drink to sip on under the blush-hued blooms! XO Bistro's goal is to serve food that isn't always traditional but is always authentic. Bold, balanced flavours inspired by the everyday energy of Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi, and Da Nang. The liveliness and fresh takes are apparent on the menu right away and I was excited to order some dishes that felt new. Starting with appetizers, the Double Trouble (Rice paper, shrimp, lettuce, vermicelli, tangy fish sauce. Choice of pork or veggie spring roll - $11.25) stood out as something fun to try. Can't choose between a spring roll or a fresh roll? Get both! I loved this playful version and especially enjoyed getting to eat two types of rolls instead of just one! We chose the pork spring roll for the inside and I loved the textural crunch and juicy pork that it provided. Meanwhile, the outside was wrapped in rice paper, acting as a window to the shrimp enveloped within. Dunking each bite into the zippy fish sauce added just the right acidity. Wonderfully tasty, so much fun to eat, and striking presentation to boot! Another item that really caught my eye was the Bone Marrow (Roasted bone marrow, panko crust, toasted baguette, pâté - $19.00). A dish that I love but only come across seldomly. Now this was a dish that I certainly did not expect. But boy did I love it! Roasting the marrow topped with a crust of seasoned panko was inspired - a genius way to add texture (and more flavour) to an otherwise fairly gelatinous ingredient. Bread is such a huge component to Vietnamese cuisine (think bánh mì) because of the French colonization in the 1800s. The Viet people then proceeded to transform this bread into a completely new, localized culinary staple. The baguette at XO Bistro was absolute fresh, housemade(?) perfection. Crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside. I loved slathering the bread with ample amounts of delicious pâté (another "gift" from the French) and then topping it all off with spoonfuls of rich bone marrow. Each bite exemplified decadence and I reveled in it. This might very well have been the best bone marrow preparation that I've ever had. Vietnamese food might be one of the earlier examples of fusion cuisine, and while colonization sucks the food admittedly does not. XO Bistro provides everything that you know and love in terms of main dishes; from bánh mì to phở (there's even a "phở challenge" where if you eat an obscenely-sized bowl in 45 minutes you get a prize) to bún. These were a famous item popular during the taste of edmonton. They did not disappoint. They charred them so nicely I could hear the fire crackling in the dead of winter. But the best part was the peanut sauce. They don't provide this during the taste of edmonton. But it brings the dish to new heights. I would say...stick to the grilled meats here. They don't disappoint. I throughly enjoyed my bun bo hue. It was authentic and tasty. It made my list for top 5 in edmonton for sure. Portion was perfect and the ratio of meats and noodles were just right. Another great dish. My only vice was that it was happy hour...advertised from 3-7pm. But the staff would not allow discounted prices despite it only being 6pm. They had decent options like wine, beer or a customized cocktail for $4. The server states happy hour is over despite it clearly stating it is until 7pm on the menu. I point to the board and he says it's full price. Whatever. I don't like misrepresentation on menus. And discrepancys are misleading. For this I minused a star. Service was haphazard. I seated myself. Got my own condiments and even got my own drinks. I had to go to the counter to order my food and pay at the register. All the server did was put the food on my table and clean it up afterwards. The whole process downgraded the whole modern vibe to more of a cafeteria style establishment. I felt jipped tipping bc i basically served myself. So minus another star. Overall. The food was great. Slightly overpriced. But the atmosphere reflects the price in the heart of downtown. Service was okay but the whole happy hour misrepresentation was a huge turnoff. I won't ever be buying drinks here in the future. Bc hey...they don't follow the advertised prices on the menu. It's decent. I would revisit if I am in the area. The combos they offer are a rice or noodle (pad thai that didn't look very appetizing) and then up to 3 or 4 items. The food was under heat lamps so I could see what the options were. I decided to get the fried rice and a few items. I choose a chicken first and looked at the other items before deciding on the vegetables with cashews. The woman serving me had the rectangle take out container about 2/3 full and she kept suggesting food such as the green beans and then the sweet and sour pork. Both didn't look very appetizing. I think she was hoping I would pay for as much food to get rid of since the lunch time crowd had passed but she wasn't generous with the quantity. I decided on the beef skewer and then was done. At half price I paid $7.35. I brought the food home and heated it up. I liked the beef skewer but the rest of the food wasn't very good. The food tasted greasy and I had to use my fingers to eat the chicken was it had lots of bones. I'm not sure if it's from this food, but I didn't feel well after. Definitely would not pay $14 for the food I had as lots of other great restaurants around. It would probably be better to go during the lunch hour when the food is hot and fresh but I'll pass next time I'm in the area.
