This was our first visit to Szechuan Sweet Mango. It was just absolutely amazing. I don't think that I can remember all of the wonderful dishes that we enjoyed. The thing is that they were all so good. Sometimes at a multi-dish meal there are one or two special dishes and the rest are just okay. However at Szechuan Sweet Mango all of the dishes were a delight to eat: none of them were just okay, they were all wonderful. Of course I'll be back to dine here again, how could I not? Free parking is available on the lot in front of the restaurant. If it's full I'm sure that there is plenty of side street parking. The food is a unique blend of Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai food cuisines. I think that the chef selected the best from these countries to design their meals. Not only were the dishes delicious but they were all presented in a way that made them a treat for our eyes as well as our palates. Szechuan Sweet Mango gets my five star recommendation. read more

First time sitting down for a meal INSIDE a restaurant for 2021. I requested if we were to try eating inside, we go to a quieter place. I was very glad my friends reminded me of this lovely place as I have ordered take out a couple of times earlier in the year. Parking lot is right off 82 Ave. It's on the smaller side as it's shared with other businesses but also right in front of restaurant. The restaurant is in a great location for those that are spending time in Whyte Ave area (especially if you don't want to wait with a larger crowd for a table to be available), if you're near Faculty St. Jean or if you are walking through the Millcreek Ravine. I didn't see any slopped area for making the sidewalk accessible for wheelchairs or easier for walkers (maybe it was closer to the pharmacy on the other end of the sidewalk?) but the ledge is low enough for those using canes, walkers and crutches that the struggle wouldn't be horribly bad to get into the place. After getting through the door, it is all one level of a restaurant which I appreciate (as some days just walking into a place has maxed out my energy). The restaurant itself was quieter than most places that I've gone in for pick up recently (by quieter I mean noise level and amount of people allowed to be seated), decently lit for early evening and with good amount of natural light through the windows (thankfully not a level of migraine triggering bright). The place of course smelled great! It was the "I need to decide what to eat - fast!" kind of trigger. As my friend suggested this spot for our easing back into in-person meals, it didn't even cross my mind to call ahead to make a reservation. So I'm very glad they accommodated my table of three and were placed at a table by the windows. Definitely give them a call for within the next few weeks if you're planning on dinning in, as I'm not sure what their limits are for seating tables (before or after "open for summer"). The entire time we were at the restaurant we all took note of the decent flow of take out. So glad to see a restaurant well supported by the community! Spacing was very generous between us and the few other tables seated during our dining experience. Menus are still provided at the table but only consist of the Vietnamese menu. If you'd like to order something off the Chinese menu (or want to have a chance to see what items you'd like to narrow down - as there's a lot of great food options!), I suggest looking online. It's been awhile since I had a Vietnamese iced coffee, so I was thrilled to order that again. My cohorts shared the typical pot of tea I would normal get when having Vietnamese meals. We all were curious about how the options with the two restaurants were melding together. I was impressed as much as my cohorts were by our waitress's knowledge of both menus and the ability to help create more vegan dish options than were being presented on either menu. I say that's an extra bonus when you know restaurants can accommodate dietary needs like that. We ordered to start spring rolls and they arrived as quickly we enjoyed them. I forgot the simple pleasure of eating things freshly made within a restaurant vs eating still good food but only being lukewarm or reheated by the time you get home. I ordered the #36 meal that also came with spring rolls. The portion size was still decent for the price but I can't comment on the pricing of the other two dishes. All I know the smell was making me almost have food order remorse and they both have positive comments on the flavours for the vegetarian meal choices (also ordered from the Vietnamese menu). They ordered a bucket of rice to accompany the dishes and it was honestly a perfect size for two people sharing (also commented, it was perfect for soaking up the very last bit of the scrumptious sauce!). I felt really comfortable with the way the restaurant was allowing tables to be seated, how the waitress attended our table and was happy with the speed of how fast our food arrived. Even after we were done she returned to check on waters several times and asked if we needed any dessert options before bringing the bill with the fortune cookies. I thought that was a really nice gesture to let us finish our conversation. Honestly, I half expected our plates to be cleared and a cheque to show up immediately to rush us out there door (as that was how I had remembered my last experience dinning in a restaurant back in summer of 2020). I'll definitely come back again. I liked the flexibility of the two menus and range of items for myself and for any of my friends that all have dietary constraints. The service is friendly and prompt. The restaurant does lack a bit of care though. The inside is a bit dated and needs a bit of a renovation. The food while simple is pretty decent. Second time we dined here within a 10 day period and the meals are getting better! The second time we came to eat we brought two more diners which allowed us to order more dishes. The owner remembered us from the first visit just over a week ago and saw we were back and ordering more dishes. I feel like this contributed to the better meal. The dishes were hot, tasty, large, and came out quickly. The first of the two meals here was somewhat uninspiring. The Young Chow Stir-fried rice was completely grey and had no appeal. The menu says it's a favourite and it's on the House Specials page so I thought it would be a winner but I wouldn't order that again. I do feel that they have cut back on the amount of meat in their dishes. This makes sense since it's the most expensive part of the dish but it does make us feel a little cheated. When the 6 adult guests are fighting for meat before it's all gone you know there isn't enough in the dish. We will be back because my family really enjoys it here. read more

I use to live next to this location, and due to that, I would often call in an order for pick up of tofu fries and summer rolls; they are perfect for a filling affordable snack! I moved away about a year and a half ago, and decided to take my love for a dinner date here. Sweet Mango did not disappoint; quite the opposite, they actually impressed me with the gluten free options available. A big part of the menu is gluten free, which caused me to review the menu thoroughly and choose something different than my old usual. This place has Thai, Chinese, and Vietnamese options to choose from. We did start with the Summer Rolls, as they are a great appitizer. After the appy, I ordered the Sizzling Seafood platter for myself, we shared the Lemongrass chicken, and my date ordered the ginger beef. It was quiet the spread of food! It was all so good! Perfect texture, temperature, and taste! I loved it! I am surprised that it isn't busier during dinner time on a Sunday... but it was nice to be the recipient of great service, as our server was very focused on making sure we were satisfied and had everything we needed. I've passed by Sweet Mango a million times but have never had any urge to check them out. Asian "fusion" is already a warning sign. I'll never understand restaurants that do two cuisines; it's already hard enough to do one justice. It's located beside a 7 Eleven. This is one of Breezy's favourite restaurants so we decided to check them out on a late Thursday evening for dinner. The decor is old and outdated, the lighting beyond ghetto. Even for a Viet/Thai restaurant, this is bare bones. Another bad sign: our waitress wasn't Asian. I'm not even done - to make matters even worse, we were only given one pair of chopsticks because they "ran out" of clean ones. What the truck. Hey, at least you can save 10% if you're a poor ass student. Only valid Monday to Friday (according to their website). - Spring rolls (#3) ($7.95 for four) - these came out piping hot but they're so overpriced. No chance these were homemade. - Peanut saté beef soup (#29) ($9.95) - I wasn't expecting much for my bowl and that was a good thing. Broth very one dimensional, bland and they were incredibly stingy with the beef. I ate it because I was starving. - Combo of pork meat balls, grilled lemongrass pork & Vietnamese spring rolls (#39) ($11.95) - I never order vermicelli bowls but this is Breezy's favourite thing on Sweet Mango's menu. Her go to order. The meat was dry and the flavours boring. Do yourself a favour and drive the extra 5 minutes back to Whyte where there's a wealth of solid options. read more

I really enjoyed our smorgasbord of dishes tonight. Not pictured was the green onion cakes that were gobbled up prior to getting a photo snapped. The chef and his wife was very friendly and the dishes cooked were very flavourful and had good heat and seasoning to them. The server was also extremely attentive. My favourite dishes were the two shrimp dishes that were cooked to perfection. The shrimp wasn't chewy and had bounce to it. The new menu was very tasty and the flavours were nicely paired with each dish. Each dish in Chinese had the right "wok hei" which means fire to it. The food was aromatic and taste was enhanced into the dish from the wok it was cooked in. The lemongrass could be tasted throughout the vegetables and the coconut milk amalgamated nicely with the tofu and vegetables. My only critique if I was to nitpick was that the pork chops were slightly dry. All in all, I wouldn't hesitate to add this to my rotation of restaurant options to regularly dine at!! read more

I had gotten takeout from here before and it was delicious. This time I was eating with my partner who has a shellfish allergy. I told the staff about the allergy over the phone while I was ordering the food. I repeated it several times. I was assured that it was no problem and our food would not have any allergens. We received the food, started eating, and my partner immediately had an allergic reaction. I called to inquire and their response was "well, we made the dish without shrimp, but it's possibly that there is shellfish in the sauce." As someone who works in a restaurant, I know how important it is to be aware of allergies. The staff should have suggested an alternative dish for us to order or else made sure that our food had no shellfish. Thankfully my partner was okay, but we will not be back. read more

There are a few hole-in-the-wall restaurants in Edmonton that don't look like much, but the food makes up for the lack of ambience. I'd say that this place has the potential for that. Parking is fairly decent because it is in a older neighborhood along 82 ave. Inside the restaurant is quite dark. I would've thought the place was closed because half the restaurant was closed off with lights off when you enter. There was a lot of seated tables on the other half though so that's what made us stay. They do coconut rice really well here & the green onion cake was nice & crispy. There is a pretty decent selection of typical Vietnamese restaurant food with typical portion sizes. Be warned: rice does not come with sizzling plates, so if you're used to eating rice with your dish, you need to order that separately. I had the lemongrass chicken rice plate. Other than the coconut rice, it tasted just like what any other Vietnamese restaurant offers. Price point is not too bad, so it's good value for what you pay for. We were seated in a few minutes. Servers are nice & quick. Didn't refill water though or mention to us that payment had to be made at the front till which would have been helpful since we waited for about 10 minutes before figuring it out (she had passed us a few times & collected our plates without mention after giving us the bill). This is my second time here & the restaurant has changed a lot in overall appearance, but the service & food quality has remained roughly the same. read more

I've been here a bunch of times over the past bunch of years. I've enjoyed thai food, Vietnamese food, Chinese food and other dishes at this place. The room dividers are not sturdy and the tables should not be moved as a result. But service is generally pretty good (go to the cash register to pay), and the restaurant has never been terribly packed during my visits. Portion sizes are substantial and the menu has many options available. Generally people in the groups I am in have no trouble finding something to eat upon a visit here. Sweet Mango is a generic Asian food restaurant that serves a huge variety of Vietnamese and Thai food. I've been here a couple of times and am yet to be disappointed. I wouldn't go out and say that their Vietnamese or their Thai food is extremely authentic but I love that they have delicious food that isn't too expensive. It's really the kind of restaurant that should be there in every neighborhood for the unplanned weeknight take out/delivered food option, if nothing else. With a huge variety on their menu, it's easy to become a regular here without knowing it. While driving east of Milcreek on Whyte, it's an often missable place but the keen observer will notice their large board with a logo that can be seen from a fair distance. I like that their ambience is just a humble one with decent sized tables and easily maneuverability for waiters around the restaurant. It's like in between a '90s family restaurant and a hole in the wall. The green onion cakes (as initially suggested by Gord L.) are delicious and large. Makes for excellent appetizers. Their deep fried wontons though were also very delicious. Mmmm. When it comes to soups, they were hot, brothy and packed with flavor. The Thai lemongrass soup that I had was quite spicy. On the spicy note, like many other places, they have a spice index (mild, medium spicy and spicy being the three possibilities). I've heard a lot about their curry entrees that are brought on a sizzling plate. They look, smell and "sound" delicious. Although I really wanted to try the sizzling plate, I did go with a regular entree one time and was quite impressed by the simplicity of it. I can't wait to get back! read more

So hubby and decided to give them a try one night before going to a concert at Rexall - and they did not disappoint! While their vermicelli & grilled meat bowls aren't the traditional kind you'd find strictly in a Vietnamese restaurant - they were pretty delicious! I also had the calamari appetizer - Yum Yum Yummy! My husband ordered a stir fried noodle dish and it did not disappoint! Everything tasted fresh and had distinct flavors - which we love! (You know what I mean? I've been here three times and every time I'm pleasantly surprised. My favorite is their wonton soup it's so clean and fresh with lots of lightly cooked vegetables. It's better than any I've had before. My last visit I had pad Thai and a Vietnamese coffee. I'm a bit of a Pad Thai connoisseur and theirs stands up. However that Vietnamese coffee is outstanding. It was rich, dark, creamy and absolutely delicious. It tasted like it had Kahlua in it. The service was quick and friendly. Clean place with accessible parking. I'm a little conflicted about this review. On one hand, Sweet Mango has the best Pad Thai that I have had in the city. It is as close to the Pad Thai in Thailand that I've gotten since being back. It was soooooo good! On the other hand, our server didn't even bother to check on us to see how our food was. And before that, our food came at different times. The vermicelli that my boyfriend ordered was not good. It was one of the smallest vermicelli portions I have ever seen. It was priced decently - $30 for the two of us. However, it turns out that they give a student discount which wasn't mentioned to us or advertised anywhere noticeable. I didn't find that out until after we left and grabbed one of the delivery menus to write this review and - SURPRISE - it was written on there. The decor of the place itself was very simple and plain. The chairs are pretty cheap plastic but they were surprisingly comfortable. It looks as though they did the best they could with a beginner budget which I can definitely respect. I don't think I'll be going back to Sweet Mango because of the lack of service and mediocre food, but if you are looking for a good dish of Pad Thai, try it here because it is really good. so i mean not even warm we had towe ordered from these guys and when we got our food ordered 8 35 got hear at 9 52 it was cold, and re heat it up at home. the company who delivered it was uber eats which they have bags to keep the food hit they said but we got it in a plasic bag. we gave them a call to let them know and all they keep saying oh sorry we are busy they didnt offer anything nothing to replace the meal, give us a credit to replace the meal, or even try to find a solution. i think the lady only knew how to so oh sorry and we so busy. we are pretty upset about the whole thing cause we heard great things about this place. but haaaaaa what a joke. read more

This is one of my go-to spots because it is in my neighborhood and is convenient. Not only that, I've discovered it's actually quite delicious. True--it doesn't look like much from the outside and the decor is, as John says, a bit outdated. Nevertheless, there is plenty of seating and the service has always been friendly and prompt. I also find it convenient they are open until 9pm most nights (and on Sundays) because I am a person who tends to get food cravings when everything is closed. As for the food, the menu is quite extensive. I actually found it a bit overwhelming and had to ask the waitress for help but she was very lovely and had soon turned me on to the most popular items. I ordered the combination bowl of chicken, lemongrass beef, and shrimp with spring rolls. I substituted the vermicelli for coconut rice for a small fee. It was very delicious, fast, and easy. Affordable and delicious Vietnamese food! They have a wonderful selection of vegetarian dishes and gluten free options. My two favorites are the Vegetarian Vietnamese Noodle Soup (V6) and the Vegetarian Spring Roll Vermicelli (V8). Also, for an appetizer the Green Onion Cakes (V3) are wonderful or the Vegetable Summer Rolls (V1). Their customer service has definitely improved over the years and they also have take out. Once they forgot to add the tofu on my noodle soup but they promptly brought it before I even noticed and apologized. Open late and always a table! read more

Hey there, new favourite "Asian fusion" restaurant (whatever that means). Located quite a ways down 82 Ave, I had driven past dozens of times but never gone out of my way to check it out. My cousin and her BF were in town from Calgary for the weekend and they were really craving Thai, so we took the drive over here. I'm SO glad we came here. The types of dishes are pretty wide-ranging, so I don't know if I'd strictly call it Thai food, but it was dang delicious. The ever-popular order of green onion cakes and spring rolls for appies was a fantastic decision. Cheap and filling - I couldn't even finish my entree! My tasty beef stirfry was just the right amount of spice. Big thumbs up for the descriptions on the menu, too. From "mildly spicy" to "spicy," and even a few that read, "spicy!!!!!" (I love spicy food and my husband doesn't, but he often ends up ordering items at restaurants much spicier than they sound. The descriptions here were right on the money, so this place will be a sure bet for our next dinner date.) Not too busy, but a warm atmosphere all the same. Our server was great, too. Oh - oh oh! This used to be our go-to restaurant for a few years; food was awesome, the portions were large, and the servers were friendly. The last time we went there I found the food to be severely lacking in quality compared to every other time we had been. My chicken dish didn't seem cooked properly, and some of the vegetables were still crunchy... not what you want in a stirfry. We spoke to some friends who always went there and were told that the cook is different now, as one of the co-owners went to start another restaurant. But then again, I love sea food so I wasn't too worried. The décor wasn't too bad. Not a hole in the wall but I'd say it's a probably a step down from Doans. Their Friday hours were kinda weird though. They closed at 9! Luckily we started dinner a little earlier. I ordered a "spicy" noodle dish with prawns and stir fry vegetables. The flavor...I'd probably describe it as skin deep. You can touch and taste it for a brief moment but it doesn't get any complex or lingering after that. What was most surprising was it was a bit on the greasy side. Although Sweet Mango is a Viet/Thai place, it passed off as a greasy Chinese plate and brought horrific memories from eating in Macau. My friends ordered the Vietnamese beef noodle soup (pho) and it literally looked like the size was for kids under ten. Very small portions for the pho. They were very displeased with this order. Waitresses were very nice and came around normally. They accomodated a late customer for us by making room for them at our already busy table. Price point wise, I'd say their dinner plates top out at about $17. For the taste, portion size, and price, I wouldn't rate this very high. When I think Sweet Mango, I picture exotic fusion in a rainforest, not a local diner in the gambling capital of Macau. read more

Sweet Mango is sweet! Our family really enjoys eating here, either dining in or take out. We love the peaches and prawns entree. It's a combination of creamy coconut sauce and sweet peaches and prawns. We get it every time. We also really like their ginger beef (my husband's favourite dish). Being a restaurant that offers asian fusion cuisine, our whole family can get something they enjoy, whereas, when we dine at just a thai, chinese or vietnamese restaurant, one person is always left with something they don't really enjoy. One of the challenges of having kids with big differences in age and taste. So Sweet Mango is a good go-to for us. The restaurant is always pretty busy, but the service is fast, waitresses are friendly and atmosphere is sort of modern. We really like this restaurant. read more

The restaurant looks like it is in a state of partial disarray or halfway through moving in or out. The decor is dated, cheap, and tacky. This place could have so much more potential and could attract new customers if it dressed itself up, reworked the menu, and had more of an identity. I've driven by this place numerous of times and finally decided to check it out. Lots of options on the menu and all reasonably priced. The server was very friendly and attentive. My son really enjoyed the large fish tank they have inside. We order green onion cakes, combo with Vietnamese spring rolls, prawns, lemongrass chicken, lemongrass beef and vermicelli noodles and then fried ice cream for dessert. Everything was delicious and very impressed with the size of the green onion cakes. We will definitely be back. read more
