There are other families that stay at the resort the same week every year and they have literally become family to us. My brother in law actually met his wife there! The cabins are awesome just bring your clothes, some bedding and food and you've got a week in paradise. Sandy beach for the kids, docks for fishing, boats to rent and a place for a fire outside every cabin! They have something for everyone in our family! They even update you on local happenings like the farmers market or music on the Pentwater Greene. Kevin and Christen are second generation operators at Ferwerdas and it shows. There is so much pride in the cabins, beach area, grounds,etc. The location is perfect, set on Bass Lake with access to the Outlet (where Bass Lake flows out to Lake Michigan) and just down the street from Sunset Ln where you can see the most beautiful sunsets on Lake Michigan. Believe me, we will be back for a third stay! Melanie, the owner, is such an amazing host. She goes out of her way to make you feel special. From the moment you walk in to the moment you leave, you will feel like royalty. When we first arrived, she presented us with warm cookies, a beverage of choice, and a small jar of local homemade jam. She then showed us around the place and walked us to our room. Our room was very clean and there were snacks in there also. Although the rooms aren't huge there is plenty of space for sleeping and each room has it's own bathroom and shower. But by far, it's the breakfast and all day sweet treats that please people and bring them back. For breakfast, Melonie makes egg dishes, potatoes, bacon, sausage, and many sweet dishes. She also has a variety of fruit, juices, coffee, and tea available. She takes special requests and is sure to meet any food allergies/tolerances. Melanie also bakes throughout the day. While we were there she provided us with fudge, cookies, dessert bars, lemon squares, cheesecake, and more. There is also a variety of ice cream flavors available in the fridge - serve yourself. To top it off, she has a small refrigerator full of beverages available at all times and she won't want you to leave empty handed. When we checked out, she said be sure to grab a beverage to go! I really don't know how Melanie, Chuck, and Chris manage the place and make all the scrumptious food. On top of that they renovate and keep up their beautiful flower gardens. Check out my photos. Even if you cancel 2 months before--you would still be charged $50. On the two nights I was there they did not fill all the rooms (and there are only 7 rooms) so I definitely wouldn't suggest booking in advance. Why risk a schedule change arising & you losing money? There are other hotels in Ludington that allow you to not pay a cent until you arrive--no charge if you need to cancel. Here is the thing that really got me. I made a reservation back in April for a stay in July. I requested Room 6 or 7 & said I would prefer an end room if available. I also shared that it was a rough trip for me because it was my first trip after my husband passed away & I was coming alone to visit our favorite place. She not only emailed me but also called me & said that she was going to be able to give me the end room, number 7. She also said she would keep in mind the information I had shared with her about the loss of my husband. I had no idea what that meant. Extra TLC perhaps? Another thing the reservation had stated was that there was "Early check-in available on request." & "Late check-out available on request." Well, I emailed regarding both & got no response. I had wanted to perhaps drop off my luggage early so it wouldn't be in the back of my vehicle when it was parked and i was walking around town. When I arrived in July I was taken aback at the lack of attention to detail. First of all, no one was at the desk--you have to pick up a cell phone & call a number and wait for them to come over from the house. And when she ambled down she said to me, "You are in Room 5." I said, "No, I am in Room 7. You promised me the end room." She said, "Yeah, sorry. There is a glitch in the system. I gave it to someone else." (A glitch in the system--there are only SEVEN rooms--write stuff down!) She made no mention of my newly widowed state--& the solution to the problem--she offered me a bigger room (?) I said, "No. The last thing I want is a bigger room--I am here ALONE. If you want to charge me less because you weren't able to honor what you promised me, I'll be okay with that." And what was really frustrating was that I had had a booking come up for my second date there, a job, but I turned it down because I didn't want to lose my deposit on the room--THAT SHE ENDED UP GIVING TO SOMEONE ELSE. She did back down and ended up giving me the room she had promised. So then she gave me a sheet of paper with the room code--she let me into the room. I was not impressed with it--but as soon as I got my stuff into the room I thought to myself--I better make sure I am able to get back into the room--because she just struck me as absent minded. I shut the door and tried the code over and over. You probably guessed it by now--she had given me the wrong code. So I went back to the office and called again--from the cell phone sitting on the desk--no one in the office--and was given the correct code over the phone--with no apology. Then, because I was exhausted and had a bit of work to do--I decided to make myself a pot of coffee--I looked at the coffee maker and was disgusted--there was a ton of dust on it--and as I looked around--I realized the whole place looked like it hadn't been dusted--so back off to the office I went--called the cell phone again sitting on the desk--no one in the office--and got one of them to bring me a cloth and cleaner--and yes, I cleaned my own room. The carpet was dirty too--my socks and slippers became black from walking on it. Another thing of note was this is the first time I had ever been in a hotel room that did not have a place for you to sit & have a meal or sit to work at your computer--no small table and chair(s). In order to use my computer I had to pull a rocking chair up to a recliner--I had to sit on the rocking chair & hunch over the recliner with my computer on that. It forced me to sit in a position that killed my back. When I arrived in the room it was HOT. The windows were open--I needed to immediately shut them and get the air conditioning on. They were SO hard to shut. It took me a long time & a lot of effort. The view out the back window was onto an alley with garbage cans & there were spider webs in the window. The view out the front window is the parking lot. The bathroom was so tiny and the shower the smallest I had ever encountered--and I am tiny--5'7" 125 lbs.--It was like showering in a box--just awful. In the pictures on their website there are billowy country style curtains on the windows. In my room there were plain white shades on one window and a single white drape on the other. There are many other choices for hotels in the area with better views, cleaner rooms, better furnished rooms, more reasonable prices, less absent minded hosts and much better cancellation policies. I would choose one of those for your stay.

We just wrapped up a camping trip here, which was our first time visiting here. We enjoyed site 12…read morewith friends. The space was slated for eight people but it was only the four of us. The driveway for our site only had room for two cars and there was just enough space for two tents that were on pretty flat ground. We really enjoyed how tucked away our spot was in comparison to some other camping spots. The length between the bonfire ring and the picnic table was a safe distance too. The site is mostly a mix of sand and dirt, making it safe to put out embers that may jump out quickly. Site 12 also was a good distance from the bathroom and had a really short trail down to the beach/recreation area. Bathrooms were very clean to our other experiences at other campgrounds. We were very happy with the availability of hot showers. There were two shower heads make it easily accessible for those in wheelchairs or those who want to clean off their dogs. Sometimes you might have to wait depending on how busy it is but it's worth it. If your spot is farther from the bathroom, you can drive there and park just outside the bathroom. If you need water or need to do a quick rinse, there are water spigots where you can quickly fetch water too. We were also able to find just enough dry wood around the perimeter of our camp for our entire stay. If you need food, there is a great grocery store a short drive from camp. The camp manager and it's workers are usually available around the camp keeping it in camping shape too. We even asked about the treatment of the lake for safety purposes and was told they had just treated it in may, giving us peace of mind to enjoy the lake with worry. The lake itself is on the smaller end but still enjoyable on a hot day. It's also quite shallow making it great for families with small children. However, we do recommend wearing water shoes given the amount of hermit crab shells and rocks found along the beach. If you have water crafts or a boat, there is a ramp for public access. There's also bathrooms close to the beach that are kept clean too so you don't have to trek all the way back to camp. There's also grills and picnic tables at the beach in case you wanted to enjoy a meal at the beach too. We were very happy with our stay here and would recommend it for friends and family in the future.
