There's nothing special at all about this place. The showers are coin operated so if you don't have coins you're screwed because of the shack is never open either. I just checked and it's closed on the only day I'm here with no signage saying so. We have solar and our own water so we do not do the hookup sites. This place offers nice bathrooms and showers (takes quarters) so we can save our own water. Arrrr, me Buckos! All hands on deck! In recognition of International Talk Like a Pirate Day I be updating my review! Mark ye well, this be a True Story! England in the mid 16th century was a second rate, broke ass country. The Treaty of Tordesillas, signed in 1494, had divided the New World between Portugal and Spain. By law, for over a century, all the wealth from the Americas flowed to these two countries and these two countries alone. Queen Elizabeth I, envious of the seemingly unlimited resources flowing into the treasuries of her rivals, was keen to get a piece of the action. To do so, she would have to resort to using state sponsored piracy. Enjoying the rewards of some initial successes in raiding Spanish outposts in Central America, Elizabeth grew more ambitious. A Top Secret plan was devised to send an expedition around the tip of South America to raid the Spanish settlements along the coast of Chile and Peru. Francis Drake was chosen to lead the expedition. The expedition was so successful it changed the course of English History. Drake's return to England set the stage for the rise of the Empire Drake's biggest score was capturing the Nuestra Señora de la Concepción (also known as the Cacafuego), a 120 ton Spanish galleon. It was so loaded with treasure it took 6 days to offload it. Here in my review, is the story: A pirate ship loaded with more than 80 pounds of gold, 26 tons of silver and an additional $10 million dollars worth of Peruvian pesos passed within sight of Ventura and Hobson Beach Park in June, 1579. On a secret mission for Queen Elizabeth I, Captain Francis Drake and his crew of Sea Dogs had just spent the last nine months raiding virtually undefended Spanish ports all up the west coast of South and Central America. After sailing half way around the world, his ship, The Golden Hind, was sorely in need of repair. Cruising up the coast the crew looked for a spot where they could pull the boat out of the water and make it seaworthy again. Historians disagree on exactly where Drake and his men stopped and repaired his ship. Anxious to avoid openly antagonizing the King of Spain, Elizabeth had sent Drake on this mission sworn to silence. Further obscuring the exact location, the ship's log and nearly all first hand accounts were lost many years after the voyage in a palace fire. What we do know is that this Lost Harbor was somewhere north of Point Loma (San Diego). For a couple weeks in the Summer of '79, as the sailors careened their ship, Drake and his men camped out, sleeping under the stars on a California beach. Interestingly, Drake and his men were well received by the natives. They feasted together, exchanged gifts and parted amicably. Before he left, Drake claimed the land on behalf of the Queen and proclaimed this land Nova Albion (New England). Before departing California and continuing his circumnavigation of the world, Drake is said to have left a bronze plaque nailed to a tree recording his claim. While most historians insist it was much farther north, some have suggested Drake's Lost Harbor was here in Southern California. This notion is based on surviving accounts from the voyage that mention cliffs along the coastline near the Lost Harbor that reminded the homesick sailors of the White Cliffs of Dover. At Hobson Beach Park, with the right kind of eyes, you can look north toward Santa Barbara and see cliffs that just might remind you of those famous English cliffs. Check out my attached photos. Although tiny, this park has some nice amenities! Internet access, for example (WiFi Network: Hobson-2, no password required). There are a few full RV hookups, plenty of room for smaller trailers, and some spots for tent camping. There is a snack shop with breakfast items, as well as pizza, burgers. Signs on the front of the shop indicate firewood is available next door. There is also a soft drink vending machine. There are picnic tables and fire pits, but they are reserved for those that pay the campsite fees. Hobson Beach Park is at the end of a long stretch of campgrounds that run all along the coast as you leave Ventura and head north. This seems to be a top destination for RV owners. At only $65 a night for RV hook up sites (50, 30, 20 amp), and $43 for non hook up sites right on the ocean in Ventura, it's easy to see why. They even allow dogs! (Dogs cost an extra $2.50 per dog, per day, and are limited to 2 per campsite). Visits are limited to 14 consecutive days. As far as the actual beach itself goes, there isn't any sand adjacent to the camping area. It's all rock. I doubt you will be tempted to lay out on these jagged rocks. There's a slim slice of sand slightly south of the camping area. Better campsites and better beaches can be found further south. The park is open from 7 am to sundown. Spent a long weekend camping in our travel trailer at Hobson Beach Park. We camp often in Ventura County and love a good beach campsite. They offer a limited number of full hookups and Wi-Fi. Our site did not have hookups. A mixed bag, but overall we had a good time. Pros: right next to the ocean, waves crashing, nice breeze and ocean vibes. Decent spots to back into. Good, clean showers (quarter operated, no change machine so make sure to bring some). Cute little beach grill with breakfast, burgers and homemade pizza. Cons: no onsite dump (even though they have hookup sites) , very close to neighbors, no great views unless you are located along the back perimeter. The tide and the beach...the beach isn't super accessible. Only during low tides and not for too long! Beautiful rocks line the entry way to get to the sand. A nice quiet beach spot. Sea anemones, moss and exoskeletons made this a nice place to explore with my toddlers. Our spot #10 included a fire pit and picnic table. The fire pit was right next to the property wall. No dump for those that are dry camping. We mostly just slept here and explored a bit in the morning before the tide came in. Faria beach is a great beach spot to relax, swim and surf and is just a bit south. read more

No strangers to beach camping. Love camping at ventura beaches, absolutely love it. Stayed at site 7 and it's a bit tricky to get in to it and out. Every other site it's easy to get in. I feel like 7 u have to go in opposite side of traffic flow to get in. Love the full hook ups by the beach and it's a very low price to camp. The tide comes up by 230pm and if you want to enjoy the beach you must drive to Faria or another place. The people we have meet here are so nice! always willing to offer a hand if you need it while backing up or leaving the site. The burgers and calzones at the Hobson restaurant are amazing, must try! Learned our lesson that this campground shouldn't be your first choice when wanting to camp at the beach near Ventura. Making reservations online is easy enough, but it's a campground where if you want one of the "good" spots you gotta be on that website at the stroke of midnight when the window opens clicking away at the link nonstop while competing with others whom are coveting the same. Then, even if you ended up landing said coveted spot, there's not even a beach to chill on. The high tide seems to be persistent and relentless, so waves are always coming right up to the rocks that border the campground. You'd have to drive or take a longgggg walk to the other end of the stretch towards the Faria campground to get beach access, and that's IF the tide is working in your favor. Campground host is nonexistent it seemed...their trailer looked like it had been abandoned for months. Also the little pizza shack...closed on Thursdays of all days! THURSDAYS??? For real?? Of all the days of the week, what on earth made them think that day was the most practical?? Make it make sense! Finally, it seems many fellow campers are either new or ignorant to noise ordinances. Generator noises galore...even well after 9pm. I'm possibly being a Karen about this, but I've always felt that blasting generators at all hours of the day is deemed inconsiderate. No one was enforcing it; the rangers only seemed to come out once at 8am each day. Not to mention the sound of the freeway and train tracks is very noisy as well, but that was expected being so close to them. All in all, it was pretty lame. We ended up bailing early and found a spot up at Lake Casitas where there's more peace and quiet and better scenery. read more

The camp sites are very small and it gets packed! The beach doesn't give you a large place to layout on the sand, so make sure to watch the tide. When booking the sites on the county website, it says nothing about RV length. I had to look at the map to realize my site was too short for my RV plus there was a palm tree in my site that wasn't shown on the map. We have nicked named this the "I don't give a f park". It's a beautiful spot but in my many stays here I'm astonished by the crazy lack of giving a f for other people and the park. I've literally never experienced this in any other park and I've camped about every where in so cal. Last trip was a new one for me. I dude backed his giant trailer so that it was about two feet into the site next to him. He literally had to walk through the camp next to him to get out of his trailer. I can't understand how the rangers and host were ok with this. And just for even more fun. Ordered some tasty snacks at the pizza stand and the lady working there came running out the shop screaming f bombs and other crazy shit. My other neighbor, in a rental rv, came flying into their site with their rv smashing into the table so that it flew up onto the rocks and almost hit our rv on the way in. Then they ran their generator at 6am. I had to say something. At least they were cool and turned it off but would on gods green earth would make you think that running a generator is ok at 6am? Woah dude! I literally can't with how crazy this place is. Every time I'm here I learn something new about humanity. This park has a definite vibe. But I'll still come back, because free entertainment. read more

This review is detailed but I like to know before I go. We spent 5 nights here in waterfront site #19 from 11/1 -11/6. The campground is in an amazing place right on the ocean. Cant use the beach due to high tide until maybe 2 or 3. If you have a large rig, you will have to come in traveling NORTH as the turn is SHARP! The front entrance does not have an entrance gate arm & at night a lot of cars come in &out. We were told that theft is high & there are signs posted in regards to this so we locked everything & brought our bikes inside. When you arrive there is no check in kiosk. You just go to your camp spot & Camp rangers come around periodically during the day to run license plates & check reservations. This ends around 3PM tho. Check in is at noon. When we arrived there was a truck partially parked in our site. We had to track them down surfing to move. We waited 25 minutes for them to do so! There is a very narrow, one way in & out road so if you are stopped you block traffic. We asked the person who was inside of the CAMP HOST spot for help but she never came. We had to deal with this on our own. I spoke to her afterwards realizing she is also the cafe cook and she did apologize saying she got busy at the cafe.Site #19 is long but narrow. The length is a benefit as you can set up table & easy up behind your rig depending on its length. Even though it is an end spot there is not much room on either side. One side is a heavy, ped traffic, cemented, designated, walkway to the stairs down the beach. The other side is your neighbor with maybe 4 feet of space. This site also has a public shower on it that is heavily used by all to rinse their feet, surfers after they surf, some to wash their dishes. There is a double staircase with a landing that people stand on to see the water, drink their coffee, fish or watch the sunset. 19&18 are busy sites! There are high rocks behind 19 so you can't see the ocean sitting in your chair. However, you can hear the crashing waves. At high tide it can be very loud. Everything gets wet. Not damp - wet. There are so many rats that live inside of these rocks! We saw them running thru the rocks in the early evening & we watched them swarm at night all over our neighbors picnic tables, grills & coming in and out of the shower drain. They were large enough to continuously activate the outside sensor lights of the RV's. Also feral cats walk around on everything. I encountered rats at night around the showers &cafe. We have a 28 foot rig so we did not have any problem maneuvering but I will tell you that a lot of people had to ask others to move their cars so they could get inside their spots. There isn't much room to pull up your rig then back into spots. So when people park their cars in front of their rigs there is maybe 10 feet to maneuver.There are two, Women's, quarter, hot showers that are quite large with a bench. My problem with them is they are not safe or secure. You enter a propped open main door then you go into a regular public bathroom stall & that is the shower. There is a one inch opening next that someone can look in & the bottom 2 feet & top 5 feet are open. Anyone can walk in while you are showering. I had my husband sit outside on the pic nic tables while I showered at night. Also, there is a long connecting walkway behind the cafe that goes directly to the Men's shower which has access out to the other side. Anyone could stand there, wait & it would be very hard to see them. I saw non camping people park in the day use parking & use these showers at all hours of the day & on our walks at night. We also watched a man around 8:30pm walk in from the Old Hwy & go to the showers which they lock at 9PM. There are signs posted that the showers are for campers only but there is no one monitoring this or anything else for that matter. There is an outside sink connected to the bathroom area to wash dishes. The 3 stall bathroom also has a sink inside. The bathrooms were always clean & well supplied with toilet paper & seat covers. We watched the maintenance people drive thru the campground but not once did they clean out the fire pits or the sites. When we arrived, our fire pit, which is moveable BTW, had trash and debris inside of it. There is no onsite dump station but if you call JW Enterprises they will come out & empty your tanks, ($40) &/or fill your water tank, ($60 for all 3) - (800)350-3331. The campground does have public WIFI but we did not use it. They sell firewood but you gotta get it during the Cafe hours. I have reviewed the cafe on the HOBSON GRILL & Pizza shack page. The full hook up sites in the middle of the park are EXTREMELY close together! Except sites 6, 7 & 3. We cancelled site 30 cuz there is a tree in the back taking up 3 feet of the site. In my opinion this campground is picturesque & could be amazing but it is in need of an active camp host or personnel to monitor activity & the county needs to fix some maintenance & safety issues. read more

If you are disabled or have trouble walking, getting to the ocean will be very very difficult. The cafe was awesome. The couple that works there couldn't have been nicer with my boys! This was my first visit camping at Hobson. It's a really small and tightly spaced campground, but it's convenient because it's only steps away from the beach. I was able to book a site during the off season, with full hook ups, which was nice. There are only a handful of hook up sites that you can reserve off season, all other spots are first come first serve. Some things I liked: *Close to the beach *Big, flat stretch of beach that you can walk *Clean facilities including showers/bathrooms *Beautiful sea life by the beach, our friends even caught some big crabs! (Dinner!) *Good for kids/families Things I didn't care for: *Too small of a space *Loud, rowdy neighbors playing corn hole right outside my door (they swore they were in the olympics) *Not enough parking!! *People smoking pot *Know-it-all neighbors acting like they were the camp host but really had no authority Hope this helps. Our first time here, we definitely will be returning! It is a small quaint camp ground but perfect for us. We booked 5 months ahead of time to get the exact spots we wanted. We booked space 27 and our son/family booked space 28, both back up to the ocean. It is a non hook-up space but we brought our generator. Downside to space 28 is people walk through your site to access the beach. There are two very clean shower stalls, and 3 very clean bathroom stalls. Bring your quarters for the showers. Side note tip, if you are coming from the 101 South and exit Seacliff, the turn into the campground is extremely sharp. Exit prior and take the 1 PCH to enter the campground. read more

I'm sure the park is nice. Unfortunately I won't be staying here- despite placing a reservation 2.5 months in advance. I called to reschedule my reservation to the following week. The same site is available the following week (according to the website). The agent I spoke to said I would pay not only a cancellation fee, but a re-booking fee as well. Due to an unforeseen scheduling conflict, I will not be able to make my reservation and without being charged twice, I can't re-book. This Parks Department is a joke- but what did I expect, it's California after all. read more

Hello happy campers This is the best campground i've ever camped at...right on the beach. It's small and cozy, pretty close to others but, my family and friends just love it. They have a free outside shower plus 2 indoor showers that take quarters, very clean. They also have a small food counter with delicious inexpensive dishes. You don't find that in campgrounds usually! They have spaces with hook-ups for glampers with RVs, Plus spaces without, for us real tent campers! read more

At this cozy campground is a grill. Not your ordinary grill though. Run by Nick and his wife. Nick is from the Bronx and makes pIzza just the way I remember and loved when I live in the Bronx myself. He has a pizza oven and it comes out crispy, thin and delicious. He also makes a killer meatball sub, from scratch!! No frozen meatballs out of a bag here. The bun is grilled, topped with Nick's sauce and some cheese melted perfectly. His coffee is right on too. My husband and I were coming home from a trip up North and we stopped in and had breakfast. Why go to an expensive restaurant when you can have Nick's tasty home cooking and enjoy the ocean breeze! Highly recommend, have to try it out people! read more

My first time camping at Hobson Beach Park. This place is a 'First come, first serve' campground. Lucky I had arrived early on Friday and took the last site for the day. Hobson has a few 'Day Use' parking spots available which fills up early and no parking along the road (PCH/Old Rincon Hwy) outside the park. The cost per day was $32 which allows you to have three items on a campsite. This means for example, a tent and two cars; two tents and one car; an RV, tent and a car three tents or three cars, well you get the picture, right? Each campsite has an aluminum picnic type table and fire ring. At this campground, you will find clean restrooms, clean showers (which operates on quarters), and a shower at the entrance/exit from the beach to wash off salt and sand. There is a snack shop to purchase breakfast lunch or early dinner, sodas, ice cream bars, misc toy and flip flops. Bundles of firewood are sold for about $6.50 which is sold by the operator of the snack shop or at the host trailer, as well as, bags of ice. This is a good spot for surfers, paddle boarders and surf fishing. Hobson does not have a sandy beach area in which to sunbath or to just sit around. During low tide you will see people walking the small beach area, collect shells, sea glass, and even sand dollars when in season I was told. You can even watch dogs playing in the surf chasing balls and their owners, kids searching for crabs and anything that interest them. For those who cycle, there is a bike lane along PCH / Old Rincon Hwy from the park into Ventura. For those that do likes to lay out on a sandy beach, a short drive south past Faria Beach or Solimar Beach, you will find areas to suit you with plenty of parking. read more

SEVERE SITE & PARKING PROBLEMS! The sites themselves vary from small to barely adequate (and most have no hookups at all), but the real problem is PARKING! Be very careful which site you pick (I had space 31 and it had a giant palm tree at the entrance that took 45 minutes to negotiate around to get my 30' trailer into the space) and take careful note of its length and width, because if you have "slide-outs" on your rig or anything other than a Volkswagen, you may very well not have room to park your car on your site! And here's the real problem: if you can't park on your site, you can only use the "day pass" parking spaces from 7pm-7am, at which time YOU MUST MOVE your vehicle to street parking along the highway (or face a big fine!) which is approximately 1/2 mile or more away (if you can find room)!!! Hobson can be great for certain people (like tent campers, small RV's, but if you're towing something bigger than 18-20' be careful...just depends which space you've picked and what your rig is. Yes, you are next to the beach...sort of...actually you are next to the rocks fronting the beach, the beach is only accessible at low, low tide and only from one walkway. On the plus side, there is a nice refreshment stand on site, and the sunsets are great! Hope it works for you...Faria (down the street) has some bigger sites so that's a better option if you're towing....jg read more

Love this place, loved it more when nobody could find this place. Inside spots have hook-ups, outside spots are dry. Busy place but they finally have reservations. Never had a problem here before, checking in, out, neighbors. But last visit, Trailer fit but truck did not, had to park on pch about a good 1/2 mile away. You can park truck there at night, after 9pm but you had to move it by 7am or get a ticket. No beach really to speak of but the pacific ocean is at your doorstep.Watch out for the kids. read more

Akin to Faria State Beach, which I'd camped at before, Hobson was only slightly below (but still an amazing, fun experience) tier of my previous experience camping on this stretch of the Pacific Coast. Finding the campsite is easy enough if you know where you're going, although if you GPS Hobson Beach Park, it won't take you directly to the campsite (from personal experience). Spots are on a first come, first served basis which can be a bit of a gamble if you're traveling from afar (Coming in from San Diego, I was a little worried haha). But I arrived around 11am on a Friday morning and was lucky enough to grab the last spot in the campground! Both RV camping with hookups and tent camping are allowed here. Prices are pretty reasonable (I think they're listed on the beach website). And although a lot of reviews say that the spots were small, I found them perfectly sized for the 3 'item' maximum. (I came in a car, and set up two tents). If you need to park another car, you'll have to do it a mile and a half down, by Faria, and be driven back up to the campsite (which we did, and was no hassle at all.) Each spot comes with a fire pit and an aluminum table/bench. My spot was actually the closest to the stairway leading to the ocean and the outside showers! And although it seemed like a bit of a blessing at first (easy access), a lot of people would walk through my campground to get to the steps faster. They'd also walk by at night sometimes, which didn't disturb, but was a little annoying haha (if you're reading this, please don't walk through people's camp sites! Respect.). Ammenities include a little shop, 'Adrian's Grill', who's owner was a super chill dude. You could get most of what you might need/have forgotten (including some hygenic products, snacks, cooked food but most importantly: WOOD and ICE). Prices were actually not high at all! A bundle of wood cost $6 and would last most of the night. A bag of Ice was $5 I think. and It lasted in the cooler most of the day. And for anything else, you could always drive into Ventura or Carpinteria (10 minutes away) to go to Vons or Albertsons. There are also showers available (2 showers for men, 2 for women) which were in pretty good shape (quarter operated) and bathrooms that stay open all night. Everyone was respectful for the most part. I saw a lot of families and groups celebrating birthdays or a weekend getaway but the only loud part past 11pm was at a campsite a bit away from me, so it didn't bug. It was also on a Saturday, which I think would be appropriate enough (if they stopped at around 1am maybe?). The only thing I liked about Faria better than Hobson was that they had a little grassy/shady area with a couple of trees. Hobson didn't have that, so unless you brought shade (FYI, BRING SOME SHADE), you'd be in the sun all day. Still, a completely SoCal way to spend a weekend at the beach, and a very fun experience. Hobson rv park is an awesome campsite with beautiful views. I would definitely give this place 5 stars. But out of the 10 years of camping there i have never been so harrassed by the park rangers. They came by treated us and just about every other camper in the park as if we we're criminals doing something wrong. I really hope the camp host and owners do something about it. read more
