Rally House will definitely be busy during football gamedays, so it was a relief to visit them on a chill Saturday evening (and Sunday morning). They have a big (but not too big) showroom, and they offer anything and everything you could imagine. If you can think of it (and you if you want it to display Virginia Tech), they have it. Being a huge basketball and football fan, I came in looking for clothes. When I came across their website a few weeks ago, I noticed they offered Nike gear that the other local Hokie-centric stores simply don't have. I kept a mental note of the items I was interested in and picked them up during my recent Blacksburg visit. Rally House's main entrance is actually on the second floor. This building was built on an incline (i.e., hill), so their showroom is technically downstairs. Once you've gone down the stairs, you will find a clean and organized showroom full of Virginia Tech clothing and various other items. They also offer gear for the Washington professional sports teams - Commanders, Capitals, Nationals (hmm, now that I'm thinking about it, I don't think I saw any Wizards gear). There is one wall that offers Blacksburg tourist-type clothing, which I thought was pretty cool. The staff is made up of mostly college students. They were all friendly and helpful. My purchase transaction was quick and easy. I obviously spent way more time looking, but I was comfortable throughout my visit and wasn't pressured to buy anything. Finally, their price points matched (relatively) with other local Hokie shops. Some items were a bit more expensive, but from what I could tell, the more expensive items were the items that weren't available anywhere else. Thank you, Rally House! JV

We walked in and found the baseball section that is located in the back left corner of the store. They had a large selection of used and new bats (last year models). We found a Demarini Voodoo drop 3 baseball bat for half price. We also got some batting gloves for half price. Staff was helpful both in person and on the phone when we called prior to going. There is not a lot of interaction with the staff unless you are buying stuff. Worth the trip for various items.

So impressive are these guys, I guarantee you, whatever it is you get from this shop, the…read moremanagement and staff will go completely to the nth degree to please. In the last two years, I've purchased two Spirit treadmills and a home gym by Body Solid from them. The first treadmill was a lemon, but it took awhile to suss it out. Chick Duus, the owner and Tanner Duus, the head of maintenance, completely replaced, from the manufacturer, every single part of the already brand-new treadmill. Unable to get it to work properly, they called Spirit, the manufacturer, who then provided me a brand new treadmill for absolutely nothing. They came to my house, disassembled the old one, piece by piece hauled it out, and piece by piece brought the new one in and assembled it! Same with the Body Solid gym. For all of this labor, I was charged not one penny, and these guys practically lived here in my basement for several months getting all of this together. Be absolutely sure, they are helpful, courteous, willing, capable, knowledgeable and excel in extreme diligence in making sure the customer is happy with whatever they provide! I'd buy anything from them.

Today, as I was walking up East Main Street, I happened to notice a store that when I was younger would have been like finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. After being awarded the Yelp NC Triad Squad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, celebrating their contributions and accomplishments throughout the year, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and businesses, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And Sports Haven / Collectibles & Memorabilia, in Salem, Virginia, is a perfect example. I remember when I was a teenager and Saltwater Sport Fishing with my father in his Concord 27 small yacht on December 31st, 1972, off the coast of Isla Verde, Puerto Rico. At a young age, I had won several fishing tournaments catching a 403 pound Blue Marlin on one occasion, and a 97 pound Male Fish Dolphin, also known as Mahi Mahi on another. But this day was very memorable to me, because the plane where Roberto Clemente was traveling in on a humanitarian mission to deliver emergency relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua, crashed in this same area. He was killed instantly in the crash and his body was never recovered. We participated in the recovery. Since that day on, Robero Clemente's rookie card value increased immensely. Not only because he played his entire 18-year Major League Baseball career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, becoming a franchise icon and one of the greatest players of all time, but because of his deep commitment to helping others through his humanitarian work off the field, which led to his death. I gave this above example so you can see how the value of collectibles and morabilia is determined. When I entered the Sports Haven shop, the staff member at the time greeted me and welcomed me to look around. I wouldn't have space to list everything I saw, but I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the great variety and quality of merchandise. Since I moved to Roanoke, I have been a fan of the Virginia Tech Football Team and its mascot, the Hokie Bird. So I asked him if he had a figurine of him and he showed me one. It was nice but a bit large. The one I had at home was a more appropriate size. I had to go, but am planning to return another day to view more in detail all the valuable items they have in stock. And I highly recommend that you do the same and support this locally owned and operated small business.

I love the location - right beside the newly opened and renovated Firehouse 1 building. These two cute spaces compliment each other well and with the beautiful hand-made TXTUR store next door - you can really get some beautiful decor and home goods between the two. This shop is small - but packed with beautiful items that fit the name - French shabby chic farmhouse. I saw a ton of things I'd love to buy. Candles, dinnerware, candlesticks, salt and pepper shakers and wells, t-shirts, a little jewelry, pillows, seasonal decor, etc. The gal behind the counter was very friendly and they have a website and sell gift cards. I found some CUTE fall pumpkin and halloween items to die for inside as well as a honey well and a cute small stoneware jewelry dish. Highly, highly recommend you stop in if you at all love French shabby chic! (Note - the space upstairs is also an event venue)

I found a fun moonstone ring, a pendant set with a large citrine and small amethyst, and a pair of green amethyst earrings (same color as the citrine). Then I saw the tiny ring in the middle - a beautiful Edwardian setting with a clear white topaz. The owner said "I love that piece, we've had that forever and it never fits anyone." I tried it on and it fit perfectly. She said, "that is beautiful on you, make me an offer on it." I did, she said "done"! The stones don't show well in the photo but they are all clear and have lovely sparkle. I even went back to get a necklace for the pendant.

Located off Valley View Blvd almost across the street from Longhorn Steakhouse, this furniture store is one of the largest that I have ever seen. Many people are intimidated by the humongous size of this furniture store and its magestic entrance, and have never dared to enter the place. But because of its size, it also has a large selection of furniture of all prices and a large sales force that have been trained in Sales and are waiting patiently near the entrance to go after the first customer that comes in through the entrance. This can be a little intimidating to some people. Arriving around mid-afternoon, there were plenty of salespersons waiting at the door. The first one to reach me was one named Royce. He was very friendly and greeted me with a smile. I told him that I had heard about their La-Z-Boy 50% Off Sale and was looking for a nice leather recliner to watch TV comfortably at home. The Salesman was very knowledgeable about La-Z-Boy recliners because he was transferred from their Tanglewood Store a couple of weeks ago and yet he knew where to go to show me La-Z-Boy's best leather recliner. He asked me to try it out and showed me how the remote control worked. He then went about showing me a couple of other recliners to compare with the first one. Definitely, the first one was the most comfortable of them all. I asked him for the measurements of the recliner so I could see if it would fit in my space. He showed me the slip that had this information andvI took a photo of it. Then I asked him to write down the total cost for me with the 50% discount, taxes, and delivery fee of $150. Either he was not listening well to my request or didn't feel comfortable with numbers, because he brought back his card with one total price on it. Before I left he gave me another of his business cards and asked me to go back to him if I decided to purchase this item. I told him I much appreciated his time and that I would. As a former Professor of Salesman, it was interesting the different techniques that he used to get me to purchase this item today, but the most important of all, to listen, he neglected. But that's alright, without the benefit of a college education. He did his best, and if I decide to purchase the recliner, I go to him for his effort. I definitely recommend this furniture store for its variety of furniture of all price categories and quality, the beautiful display rooms, and the excellent customer service details that they have with their customers, like offering them something to drink, giving them a period where they can return the item if they don't like it for a refund, and a 5 year period of repairing anything wrong with the product.
