She is going to college on the mainland and needed to get her driver's license fast. This man was illegally parked in my neighborhood, so giving him the benefit of the doubt, I asked him if he knew he was illegally parked. His response to me was to mind my own business...I told him that my neighborhood is my business and pointed at the sign he should've read. As most petty people do, he tried to change the subject and told me to pick up after my dog, who I was walking at the time...so I showed him the bags I always keep in the pockets of all my shorts & pants, and then asked him, "what happened to minding one's business?" All he had to do was say, "oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize." and I would've told him, "mahalo" and we'd both go on with our days. I have never left a Yelp review, but it just didn't sit right with me that this man, while in the course of his job (he had a student in his car) where he's supposed to be teaching a student how to navigate Hawaiʻi's roadways, yet ¹ parks illegally, ² doesn't read posted signs, ³ and feels that the rules don't apply to him. I had a driving instructor year ago, and she made me abide by every single law you could think of, everything was by the book, and in the few times that she was wrong about something, she wasn't too proud to admit it and would correct herself. In case anyone is wondering, we live a couple hundred feet from a school and an adjacent public park...so we have kids running around all the time, and illegally parking often limits what drivers can see on the road. You'd think that a driving instructor would understand that, but clearly Hoku doesn't...or maybe he does, he just doesn't care? I don't know, I just know that I wouldn't want my kid to be learning how to drive from someone who can't even abide by posted signage himself, and when made aware of his infraction, responds poorly and in a petty manner. read more

Parallel parking! If you can not do it he will teach you how. I was terrible at parallel parking could not figure it out. Met with Jesse and I was able to parallel park on the first try. We practiced multiple times so I could really get it down and I passed my driving test on the first try. Jesse, or uncle Jesse as I'd call him - was the absolute best instructor! As an experienced DMV examiner prior to instructing, he knew exactly what the road test requires at multiple locations on island! From Kapahulu to Kapolei after I moved, he was able to cater to all my nerves around driving and was very patient each lesson. He made them fun and efficient, 90 minutes would pass by incredibly quickly as I became more comfortable and confident in my driving skills. After trying out lessons with instructors in NYC and Hawai'i, I knew I would pass my test with Jesse and I would highly recommend you seek him for your lessons/road test preparation! Before I drove with Jesse, I haven't driven on the road in about over half a year, so I didn't know what to expect when it came to my driving. Before meeting with him, I let him know when and where my road test is. Additionally, he asks for your availability and tries his best to fit you in to his schedule. Once I met with him, you find out how much of an easygoing guy he is, and a great of a teacher he is as well. I gave Hoku Driving School 5 stars six months ago when my friend first started her lessons with Jesse, and I am writing this review to give an additional 5 stars because Hoku Driving School deserves 10 stars from me! My friend had ZERO confidence in driving when she first started.. and today, she passed her test and received her driver's license!!! She could have passed sooner, but due to a change in her work schedule, she wasn't able to complete her lessons with Jesse in a shorter period of time. He just always gave me driving instructions and was so kind and always praised me. Much of my driving preparations were done at the place where I took the road test, Kapolei.
